FROM THE PRIESTS: Today we hear Matthew’s story of the temptation of Jesus, in which the evangelist uses both the Hebrew “Satan” and the Greek “Devil”. The earliest explicit mention of Satan is in the Book of Job. There, Satan is a member of the “sons of God” (1:6). The name means “adversary”, that is, one who presents opposing views—what we usually call playing the “devil’s ad-vocate”. The Greek for Devil, diabolos, also means “adversary”, but as one who aims to deceive; he even “deceived the whole world” (Rev 12:9). We see the Devil/Satan present to Jesus deceptive sug-gestions for being “Son of God” which are at odds with the Father’s will. The Devil/Satan does the same to us, trying to draw us away from our lives as daughters/sons of God. Such temptation can lead to “sin”, which the Scriptures present in a number of ways: 1) as an archery term that means to “miss the mark”, to “fail to hit the target” in our relationship with God and others; 2) a distorted condition at odds with whom we are called to be; 3) rebellion against God’s will/law; or 4) infidelity, especially in relationships in which we have obligations to God or another person. During this Lent, we can exam-ine our consciences by reflecting on these understandings, seek forgiveness and reconciliation with God in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and lean into the help of the Holy Spirit to be more faithful and more on the mark in our Christian lives!
