First Sunday of Lent St. Joseph’s Parish Bulletin –February 17/18, 2018
WILD BEASTS AND ANGELS (MARK 1, 12-15) We bear within ourselves the potential to become either saints or sinners. No one’s fate is predetermined. Even the angels had to make a free choice of good or evil and, by this choice, forge their personal destinies. The love and dedication of the angels that chose the good made them faithful instruments of God’s will and plan. The vicious self-centeredness of the demons made them into ravenous beasts endlessly looking for someone to devour. Our person and our most intimate, most secret choices are part of this ongoing and cosmic struggle between good and evil. The hour of temptation is the hour of both choice and decision. The stronger the temptation, the stronger the decision must be. A repeated choice for a good decision makes a habit of good. Many good habits build a good character. A good character, open to God’s grace, is holiness. CONVERSATION WITH CHRIST Lord Jesus, I want always to choose you, but I know that I am weak. Please give me strength in my hour of temptation. Please keep me steady, and inflame my heart with love so that I choose you and your ways even though it’s costly. May the temptations I overcome become the stepping-stones to a holy life. RESOLUTION I will be attentive today to the subtle ways in which I am tempted to center my life around myself. When these temptations come, I firmly commit to following Christ instead of my own selfish path. (Father Robert Presutti, LC)

You will have noticed changes at the start and end of Mass and how the Altar Servers generally serve at the Altar. This represents change, not only for the Altar Servers, but for the Lectors, Extra-Ordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, the Sacristans, as well as Father Yarek and Father John. The Altar Servers would like to thank everyone for all their patience, help, and support to make our launch successful! Also, the Altar Server Ministry is looking to grow the number of Altar Servers and would like to invite any parents whose children would be interested in serving at the Altar to send an email to [email protected].

THE SIGN OF THE COVENANT
The story of the great Flood ends with God making the first Covenant or solemn commitment with humanity through Noah. Human beings are to refrain from killing and from eating meat with blood in it. God's side of the deal is that there will never again be a world-wide deluge. God offers a sign of this pledge in the form of a rainbow. Ancient peoples worshipped such natural phenomena as examples of divine intervention. Since it usually appears after storms are moving on, it is a natural indication of ensuing calm. (Father Richard Lonsdale)
FR. YAREK’S PRAYER FOR LENT 2018 By the power of Your Holy Cross + (make a sign of the cross), Lord Jesus Christ, Save your people from all evil And lead them on the path of salvation By the guidance of Your Divine Spirit. Amen.

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
THE SEASON OF LENT begins on Ash Wednesday as we gather to receive the “mark of ashes,” an exterior sign of our desire for interior change and renewal. The time period of Lent mirrors the 40 days Jesus spent in the desert, the 40 years the people of Israel wandered in the wilderness – a biblical number reflecting the passage of a generation and the emergence of a new one. Lent is an annual opportunity in the liturgical year to engage in a spiritual renewal and to prepare for Easter by returning to the Lord in every aspect of our lives through the practices of prayer, almsgiving and fasting.
PRAYER Daily life can be occupied with many distractions which impact upon the peace in our hearts and draw us away from the practices of prayer. Lent is a time in our faith lives that invites a return to solitude, silence and prayer. Lent resounds with the words of the psalmist calling us to “be still and know that I am God.” (PS. 46) Pope Francis has described the experience of prayer in this way, "In the face of so many wounds that hurt us and could lead to a hardness of heart, we are called to dive into the sea of prayer, which is the sea of the boundless love of God, in order to experience his tenderness."
ALMSGIVING The pace of life sometimes isolates those who live in poverty or with underemployment. This isolation reduces our personal contact with people living with insufficiency and those who could help can become disconnected from the needs of others. The time of Lent echoes with the exclamation, "for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me." (MT. 25: 35) It is this reconnection which Lent summons in our hearts. Through acts of sacrificial giving and in being truly present to the needs of others we recognize the sacred reflection of God in another person, we see their needs and our faith inspires us to respond generously.
FASTING When speaking of fasting, the third penitential practice of Lent, Pope Francis says, “Fasting wakes us up. It makes us more attentive to God and our neighbour. It revives our desire to obey God, who alone is capable of satisfying our hunger.” This penitential practice helps us to control our desires and to be freely attentive and open to the love of God.
This is indeed a holy season in the liturgical year. May this season of prayer, almsgiving and fasting be a time of true spiritual conversion for all of us which in preparing our hearts to rejoice with the Risen Christ at Easter! Yours in Christ,
† Most Reverend William T. McGrattan, D.D. Bishop of the Diocese of Calgary †WTM/dj
