News and Notes

Dear Friends:

Please accept our gratitude for the prayers, support, and many kindnesses extended to us. We are truly blessed to be a part of the First Presbyterian Church family. The outpouring of caring in the form of cards, calls, food and assistance has touched our hearts more than we can possibly express. It is of great comfort to know that others found Sandy to be a blessing in their lives.

Our concern with expressing our gratitude is that our fog of grief will cause us to overlook some people. For this we ask forgiveness. We extend our sincere thanks to all those involved in prepar-ing for Sandy's service and reception. Music was an important part of Sandy's church life and we are grateful to the Ambassador Choir, Dan & Perri and Janet Carmichael for joyfully sharing their tal-ents at Sandy's service. We especially want to acknowledge Bernice Bailey and the many hands that prepared food for the reception and all that it entailed. We are indebted to Doug Bolton for co-ordinating arrangements for a dog area at Chim-ney Park as a memorial to Sandy. For faith in ac-tion we thank Gene Wallace for his work in the Memorial Garden. Last, but not least, we thank the staff at the church Billy, Louly, Dan, Alice and Peni for their faithful ministry to us.

In gratitude, Jim and Jean Elder

The family of Mary Myers is extremely grateful for your outpouring of love, kindness and care during these recent days. Thank you for your gifts, visits, cards, calls and emails. And especially thank you for your prayers. Please continue to pray for us. Al Myers

Dr. Amy-Jill Levine, Professor, Vanderbilt University Divinity School

We encourage all who are interested to attend. We will also be discussing lessons for the coming year.

Free Organ / Piano Concert On Sunday, January 27, 2013, the Arts Association in Newton County will present Phillip Skerrett, Becky Ram-sey, and Alice Walker in concert at 3:00 p.m. in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church. No tickets are required, but a free will offering will be taken to benefit the Dave Young Scholarship Fund for young musi-cians. This scholarship was created in honor of Dave Young who was a great educator in the Newton County School System as well as the first Executive Director of the Concert Association, now known as the Arts Associ-ation. Mr. Skerrett is on the faculty of Spelman College and is Organist/Pianist at Big Bethel A.M.E. Church in Atlanta. Becky Ramsey is Organist at Covington First United Methodist Church. Alice Walker is Organist at FPC. Both Mrs. Ramsey and Mrs. Walker direct music for seniors at their churches.

FAMILY CONNECTION

Page 4 First Presbyterian

** Early Learning Center News ** Dear FPC Family, I hope that everyone had a blessed and wonderful Christmas and New Year. The Early Learning Center has had a fantastic 2012! I look back at all the amazing units of study, Bible verses, class presenta-tions, and even special events and additions to our school such as our Curriculum Night/Fall Festival and of course our Children’s Library. Our ELC has truly been blessed this year! We could not have better teachers, students, or parents. It takes every one of them, and a sup-portive church family, to make this the best little preschool in town! Thank you to all of you for your commitment and support of the ELC. This truly is “a great place to grow.”

As many of you know, we are busy planning our 6th annual “An Art Affair” to be held in April. I cannot express to you all how im-portant this event is to our school. This is our big fund raiser, and our school depends on the success of this event for many of our financial needs. It takes a village to help put together “An Art Affair” each year! We have a great committee that has been meeting since October to help to get things rolling. We are currently seeking donations of art items. Our biggest art need is old or new unfinished wooden furniture that the children can modify and change into mas-terpieces. So, if you have anything you’d like to donate, just drop it by my office, or call me, and we will make arrangements to pick up those items. In years past, we have also had families from the church make monetary donations to help with this event. This year, we hope to purchase three “hot ticket” items for our raffle that will not be able to be donated. We hope to purchase a Creative Kids’ Camp ticket from the Newton County Arts Association ($225), a family membership to Zoo Atlanta ($109), and a birthday party

package from Game Time ($150-$200). We could raise so much money for our school by having these three items in our raffle area. Please let me know if you are interested or able to help us to obtain these. January is a time of new beginnings, and the ELC students will begin studying a new theme that goes along with “An Art Affair.” We will be looking at and studying about Artists. With this theme, each class is going to select its favorite artist, and will create a replica of one of his/her famous work to be included in our event. This will be fun for everyone! Our January Bible verse is “O Lord, you are our Father; we are they clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand.” ~Isaiah 64:8. As always, thanks for all of your support and God Bless! ~Krissy

Singers Join Us for Worship The Oxford Youth Singers will be sharing their musical gifts with us during worship on Sunday, January 27th @ 11:00 am. The OYS is an auditioned youth choir for students in 8th-12th grades who rehearse in our church weekly during the school year. This choir enhances music skills and provides choral expe-rience and opportunities for musical theatre. Join us as we cele-brate God’s gifts of music and youth!
