Prelude Appalachian Consort Introit Heavenly Light A. Kopylow
Sent from heaven, thy rays were given on great and small to shine, O Light Divine! May each soul in sorrow's night see the heavenly light! Thou blessing to all creation, lead us to our salvation! All those whose feet may falter, lead unto the sacred altar! Oh, shine from above, Divine Light of love! Show us the way unto our God, we pray. Thou our beacon and guide shalt be! Light Divine, we praise Thee!
Lighting of the Christ Candle Litany of Incarnation (adapted from Isaiah 9) The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.
Wonderful Counselor! Those who lived in a land of deep darkness on them light has shined. Mighty God! For a child has been born for us. Everlasting Father! Authority rests upon his shoulders, and his authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace with justice and righteousness. Prince of Peace!
* Processional Hymn 133 O Come, All Ye Faithful ADESTE FIDELIS
O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant; O come ye; O come ye to Bethlehem! Come, and behold him, born the King of angels! REFRAIN: O come, let us adore him; O come, let us adore him; O come, let us adore him, Christ, the Lord!
Sing, choirs of angels; sing in exultation; sing, all ye citizens of heaven above! Glory to God, all glory in the highest! [Refrain] Yea, Lord, we greet thee, born this happy morning; Jesus, to thee be all glory given; Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing! [Refrain]
* Call to Reconciliation * Prayer of Confession
God Beyond and In the Midst, You come closer and closer to us, yet we persist in our distraction and our disbelief. We prefer to judge others and focus on how they should change. We feel comfortable with the status quo and avoid doing our own internal work. We create you in our own image and resist your Spirit's urging us to change the way we live. Help us find the courage to fully embrace your presence and your promise. Amen.
* Assurance of Forgiveness * Hymn of Response Good Christian Friends, Rejoice IN DULCI JUBILO
Good Christian friends, rejoice with heart and soul and voice; now ye hear of endless bliss: Jesus Christ was born for this! He has opened heaven’s door, and we are blest forevermore. Christ was born for this! Christ was born for this!
First Reading Luke 1:26-35 Hymn 121 O Little Town of Bethlehem ST. LOUIS/FOREST GREEN [Please remain seated and sing stanzas in bold as directed]
O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by. Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting light; the hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.
How silently, how silently, the wondrous gift is given! So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of His heaven. No ear may hear His coming, but in this world of sin, where meek souls will receive Him, still the dear Christ enters in.
O Holy child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray; cast out our sin and enter in, be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell; O come to us; abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel.
Second Reading Luke 2:1-7 Hymn 128 Infant Holy, Infant Lowly W ZLOBIE LEZY Infant holy, infant lowly, for his bed a cattle stall; oxen lowing, little knowing Christ the babe is Lord of all. Swift are winging, angels singing noels ringing, tidings bringing: Christ the babe is Lord of all! Christ the babe is Lord of all!
Flocks were sleeping; shepherds keeping vigil till the morning new saw the glory, heard the story, tidings of the gospel true.
Thus rejoicing, free from sorrow, praises voicing greet the morrow: Christ the babe was born for you! Christ the babe was born for you!
Third Reading Luke 2:8-20 Anthem Ding Dong! Merrily on High Caroline Jennings
Ding dong! Merrily on high In heav'n the bells are ringing. Ding dong! Verily the sky Is riv'n with angel singing. Gloria, Hosanna in excelsis! Gloria, Hosanna in excelsis!
E'en so here below, below, Let steeple bells be swungen, And "Io, io, io!" By priest and people sungen. Gloria, Hosanna in excelsis! Gloria, Hosanna in excelsis!
Pray you, dutifully prime Your matin chime, ye ringers. May you beautifully rime Your evetime song, ye singers. Gloria, Hosanna in excelsis! Gloria, Hosanna in excelsis!
Fourth Reading John 1:1-14 Homily Marcia Mount Shoop * Hymn 113 Angels We Have Heard on High GLORIA
Angels we have heard on high, sweetly singing o’er the plains, and the mountains in reply echoing their joyous strains. Gloria in excelsis Deo! Gloria in excelsis Deo!
Shepherds, why this jubilee? Why your joyous strains prolong? What the gladsome tidings be which inspire your heavenly song? Gloria in excelsis Deo! Gloria in excelsis Deo!
Come to Bethlehem and see him whose birth the angels sing; come, adore on bended knee Christ, the Lord, the new-born King. Gloria in excelsis Deo! Gloria in excelsis Deo!

Music during Communion Appalachian Consort Prayer after Communion Offering
Offertory Anthem Shepherd’s Pipe Carol John Rutter Going through the hills on a night all starry On the way to Bethlehem Far away I heard a shepherd boy piping On the way to Bethlehem
Angels in the sky brought this message nigh: "Dance and sing for joy that Christ the newborn King Is come to bring us peace on earth And He's lying cradled there at Bethlehem." "Tell me, shepherd boy piping tunes so merrily On the way to Bethlehem Who will hear your tunes on these hills so lonely On the way to Bethlehem?
Angels in the sky brought this message nigh: "Dance and sing for the joy that Christ the newborn King Is come to bring peace on earth And He's lying cradled there at Bethlehem."
"None may hear my pipes on these hills so lonely On the way to Bethlehem; But a King will hear me play sweet lullabies When I get to Bethlehem."
Angels in the sky came down from on high Hovered over the manger where the babe was lying Cradled in the arms of his mother Mary Sleeping now at Bethlehem
"Where is the new King, shepherd boy piping merrily Is He there at Bethlehem?" "I will find Him soon by the star shining brightly In the sky o'vr Bethlehem." Angels in the sky brought this message nigh: "Dance and sing for joy that Christ the king of Kings Is come to bring us peace on earth And He's lying cradled there at Bethlehem." "May I come with you, shepherd boy piping merrily Come with you to Bethlehem? Pay my homage too at the new King's cradle Is it far to Bethlehem?" Angels in the sky brought this message nigh: "Dance and sing for joy that Christ the newborn King Is born in the stable yonder, born for you and me."
Sung Prayer of Dedication
Charge Anthem Night of Silence Daniel Kantor
Cold are the people, winter of life, we tremble in shadows this cold endless night, frozen in the snow lie roses sleeping, flowers that will echo the sunrise, fire of hope is our only warmth, weary, it’s flame will be dying soon.
Voice in the distance, call in the night, on wind you enfold us, you speak of the light, gentle on the ear you whisper softly, rumors of a dawn so embracing, breathless love awaits darkened souls, soon will we know of the morning.
Silent night, holy night! All is calm, all is bright round yon virgin mother and child. Holy infant, so tender and mild, sleep in heavenly peace, sleep in heavenly peace.
Spirit among us, shine like the star, your light that guides shepherds and kings from afar, shimmer in the sky so empty, lonely, rising in the warmth of your Son’s love, star unknowing of night and day, Spirit we wait for your loving Son.
* Hymn Silent Night, Holy Night STILLE NACHT
(We will carry the light of Christ from the sanctuary to the courtyard as we sing Silent Night together. Our service will conclude outside.)
Silent night, holy night! All is calm, all is bright, Round yon virgin mother and child! Holy Infant, so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace, Sleep in heavenly peace.
Silent night, holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight, Glories stream from heaven afar, Heavenly hosts sing: "Alleluia; Christ the Savior is born, Christ the Savior is born."
Silent night, holy night! Son of God, love's pure light Radiant beams from Thy holy face, With the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth, Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth. Silent night, holy night! Wondrous star, lend thy light; With the angels let us sing, Alleluia to our King; Christ the Savior is born, Christ the Savior is born.
* Benediction * Hymn Joy to the World! ANTIOCH
Joy to the world! the Lord is come: Let earth receive her King; Let every heart prepare Him room, And heaven and nature sing, And heaven and nature sing, And heaven and heaven and nature sing. Joy to the world! the Savior reigns: Let us our songs employ; While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat, repeat the sounding joy.
He rules the world with truth and grace, And makes the nations prove The glories of His righteousness, And wonders of His love, And wonders of His love, And wonders, wonders of His love.
