The Allen ISD fine arts programs have brought national
attention to our community through competitions and per-
formances. We are extremely proud of theses stu-
dents and the faculty who direct these programs.
Beyond the recognition, participation in Fine Arts help
provide a well-rounded education through self-discipline
and teamwork. The fine arts experiences of our students
also foster an enjoyment of the arts that they will carry
with them for life. - Dr. Ken Helvey, Superintendent
Academics and music go hand-in-hand
The average SAT score in the State of
Texas in 2009 was 1473. The average
SAT score for members of the TMEA All-
State Bands, Orchestras, and Choirs was
1835.
―SAT scores of students who took part in
music instruction surpassed students with
no music training. Additionally, data
revealed that for every year a student
participated in music instruction, their SAT
scores improved.‖ - Profile of College
Bound Seniors , National Report for
2001, the College Board.
"For our society to move forward, for our
culture to survive, fine arts education must
remain strong. We already know that
kids who study music do better in physics
and math. Teaching the fine arts is a
rounding of the whole development of
the student."
-Representative Rob Eissler, Texas House
Public Education Committee Chair.
Critical thinking and problem-solving skills, teamwork,
creativity and innovation, professionalism and
mathematics are key components of the arts - and are
considered vital to competing in the global marketplace.
But nationally, only 20 percent of employers said their
employees possess these competencies, according to a
Society for Human Resource Management study, "The
Future of the Labor Force.".
―The term ‗core academic subjects‘ means English,
reading or language arts, mathematics, science, foreign
languages, civics and government, economics, arts,
history, and geography.‖ No Child Left Behind Act of
2002, Title IX, Part A
―The right brain is where artistry, empathy,
inventiveness happen and that is what matters most
to the 21st century economy. We‘re moving from a
left-brain world that values linear, logical thinking
and action to a world that values the ability to
recognize the big picture, empathize and to come
up with multiple solutions to complex problems. In
this world, according to Dan Pink, our kids will need
to be able to ―toggle‖ between both modes of
thinking. Pink concludes that students need to be in
arts classrooms where they can explore creative
thinking and not only problem-solving but also
identifying problems and multiple solutions. - 'A
Whole New Mind' meets Texas education -
Dan Pink, UIL Leaguer, 2009
