piatto dai cieli bassi sotto i quali i canali vanno a perdersi, come cantava Jacques Brel.

Who knows if Kees Popinga (Simenon’s cha-racter who “watched the trains go by”), to avoid being recognized as a very nervous man by the station employee at the Groningen sta-tion, would have taken a car, gotten on the E19 and headed for Paris? Traveling by night because “one who leaves in this way leaves forever”1, at around Nivelle, a large horizontal band of light might have con-vinced him to stop and take a break in his de-sperate attempt at flight. Amazed by those two 210-meter long Warren beams, by those sole supports some 70 meters apart that hold up the restaurant/bridge over the highway and protect fuelling stations, he could have eaten, watching the road traffic distractedly, lost himself in the crowd of a temporary exhibition, and, most im-portantly, scanned the surrounding landscape. A landscape that is already Belgium. It is funny to imagine him in a leveled landscape, tamed

boom economico2.

by the automobile, as seemingly banal as the plain of the Walloon Brabant, a flat land with skies so low the canals get lost, as Jacques Brel sang. In contrast, this service station is an in-teresting attempt to reconsider the insertion of travel hubs, and from the countryside, the roof is part of the same size scale as the hil-ls around it. By day, screening from the sun is provided by a kind of second skin, pressed sheet metal that gives the structure a dense, compact monolithic appearance in the day and a diaphanous, clear and transparent one by night. The impact on the area and sensi-tivity to protecting the environment remain essential for positively affecting a company’s total image. In this instance, the transparen-cy of the pressed sheet metal screens provi-des optimal integration with a surrounding of the dense roadways that cross the disordered collection of buildings. The experience of re-novating the facilities of the oil company Fina
Europe, in Wanlin, in Houten, as well as in the competition for the Froyennes service area. is the polar opposite of what was done in Italy in the years of the economic boom2. The rest stop restaurant-bridge type marked the entire highway system starting in the sixties; a single structure, visible from afar as an advertising icon, holding shops and restaurants, in addi-tion to automobile services3. The design of what Roy Lichtenstein called “commercial monuments, altars of consumer goods”, given over to the will of oil companies, was imprinted over the years with qualities of non-placeness and communicative redundan-cy. There is an adhesion between form and content that often uses the company brand as its glue. For example, there is the Esso station where Vittorio de Feo extruded the logo as a gas container that stops its progression to be-come a cantilever roof, restraining its dynamic quality in a final upswing.

Samyn’s project in Nivelle is not self-referential, and unlike the common rules of the road for such architecture, it is absolutely innovative. Literally spanning travel and consumption, it goes beyond the traditional dichotomy between connecting the two inescapably divided shores of the highway band and the speed spectacle of declared modernity. Though the materials are industrial, they avoid indulging in high-tech mannerisms. They are simple, but not humble. They are dry, clean-cut, fit in the context without losing their identity, softening the ed-ges as befits a nebulous place like this. These softened edges are like the curves of the ser-vice roads that induce drivers to adjust their speed, winding routes that suggest sequences of images related to the world of the automo-bile, fuelling, vehicle checks and rest stops. When dawn comes, perhaps the l’homme qui
regardait passer les voitures is still there, lost in the morning light.
