SAINT OF THE WEEK SAINT JOSÉ SÁNCHEZ DEL RIO

Martyred in 1928, he would not live to see his fifteenth birthday. José Luis Sánchez del Rio was born on March 28, 1913 in Sahuayo, Michoacán, Mexico and educated in his home town as well as in the city of Guadalajara. He grew up during a time when the Mexican government was persecuting the Catholic Church, a policy that led eventually to the Cristero movement and war between the Cristeros and the government. José’s brothers joined the rebellion, but his mother thought José was too young to fight. General Prudencio Mendoza also thought the boy too young, but José persisted and was finally allowed to carry the flag for the rebels. When a rebel general’s horse was killed, José gave him his own horse. In due time, José was captured and imprisoned in the sacristy of a nearby church. Two of his childhood friends were present at his martyrdom. The government troops ordered José to renounce his faith in Jesus Christ, but he refused. They made him watch the execution of another Cristero, yet José remained true to his faith. Finally, on February 10, 1928, his captors cut José’s feet, forced him to walk through the town, and cut him with a machete. The government troops promised not to kill him if he would only shout, “Death to Christ the King!” José responded, “I will never give in. Viva Cristo Rey!”—long live Christ the King. Finally, the soldiers stabbed the young boy with bayonets, and the commander shot him. Just before he died, José slowly made a cross in the dirt with his finger and kissed it.

José Sánchez del Rio was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI on November 20, 2005 and canonized on October 16, 2016 by Pope Francis. In 2012 For Greater Glory, an inspiring film about this martyr and the Cristero movement, opened in theaters around the world. The film takes some liberties with historical fact but is well worth viewing. We celebrate the feast of Saint José Sánchez del Rio on February 10. Viva Cristo Rey!

THE CATHOLIC EXPONENT From the prophet Isaiah, whom we encounter in the first reading today, we learn of Isaiah’s overwhelming vision of God in His glory, surrounded by the angels. As he feels his unworthiness, Isaiah sees one of the angels coming to him to cleanse him. Then God speaks directly to Isaiah. "Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?" "Here I am," Isaiah, responds, "Send me!" All of us who have been baptized in the life of Jesus have been cleansed and prepared to be sent by God into the world, bringing His word, the Good News that He gave us. To help us carry that word, we need guidance about what we will face, what the world needs, and how to best proclaim that Good News. That is one of the many reasons for reading the Catholic Exponent, your diocesan newspaper. The news, commentary, Scripture reflection, and adult faith formation found in the pages of the Exponent remind us that we have been sent and Who has sent us and help guide us in carrying out the mission to our families, friends, co-workers, and others we encounter in our everyday lives. Subscribe or renew your subscription today by dropping “The Catholic Exponent” envelope from your parish packet into the collection basket. Or call 330-744-5251 or email us at [email protected] to request subscription information. Carry forth God’s word. Read and support the Catholic Exponent.

MISS BEHAVIOR

Dear Miss Behavior: Last week you started talking about the seven deadly sins and mentioned pride as the most important one. What's next? Sincerely,

Justa Parishioner Dear JP: Next in the order I learned (remember pewlags?) is envy. Envy involves being unhappy at the fact that other people are more successful or richer or more attractive or whatever than we are. Envy suggests that we feel sorry for ourselves because we don't have what someone else has. Envy is a never-ending spiral to unhappiness, because there will always be people richer and smarter and more attractive than we are. It's best not to be envious, and also wise not to engage in schadenfreude, which is related, I believe, to envy. Schadenfreude derives from two German words that mean damage and joy. One who engages in schadenfreude is pleased when someone else--preferably someone famous or rich or successful--encounters problems and faces a downfall of some sorts. Ironically, envy may give us momentary pleasure but ultimately is unsatisfying. Schadenfreude also gives momentary pleasure, but for how long can--or should--we revel in the pains of others? So let us avoid both envy and schadenfreude, its relative. Until next time,

Miss Behavior

Depart St. Nicholas Church at 5:30 a.m. by motorcoach to Greensburg where you board Amtrak’s “Pennsylvanian” for an exciting and scenic train ride to Altoona. Celebrate Mass in what is now the lovely Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel. Visit Prince Gallitzin’s Chapel House which was the residence and private chapel of Father Gallitzin. Enjoy a bountiful lunch at Saint Francis University, the oldest Franciscan college in the United States and one of the first Catholic colleges established in this country.
