Fiber Distributed Data Interface

1 Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) is a standard for data transmission in a local area network. It uses optical fiber as its standard underlying physical medium,

although it was also later specified to use copper cable, in which case it may be called CDDI (Copper Distributed Data Interface),

standardized as TP-PMD (Twisted-Pair Physical Medium-Dependent), also referred to as TP-DDI (Twisted-Pair Distributed Data

Interface).https://store.theartofservice.com/the-fiber-distributed-data-interface-toolkit.html

Computer network Common layouts

1 A ring network: each node is connected to its left and right

neighbour node, such that all nodes are connected and that each node

can reach each other node by traversing nodes left- or rightwards. The Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) made use of such a topology.

Internet exchange point - Operation

1 A typical IXP consists of one or more network switches, to which each of the participating ISPs connect. Prior

to the existence of switches, IXPs typically employed fiber-optic inter-repeater link (FOIRL) hubs or Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI)

rings, migrating to Ethernet and FDDI switches as those became available

in 1993 and 1994.https://store.theartofservice.com/the-fiber-distributed-data-interface-toolkit.html

EAP-TLS - IEEE 802.1X

1 The encapsulation of EAP over IEEE 802 is defined in IEEE 802.1X and known as EAP over LANs or

EAPOL.RFC 3748, § 3.3RFC 3748, § 7.12IEEE 802.1X-2001, § 7 EAPOL was originally designed for IEEE

802.3 ethernet in 802.1X-2001, but was clarified to suit other IEEE 802 LAN technologies such as IEEE

802.11 wireless and Fiber Distributed Data Interface (ISO 9314-2) in 802.1X-2004.IEEE 802.1X-2004, §

3.2.2 The EAPOL protocol was also modified for use with IEEE 802.1AE (MACsec) and

IEEE_802.1#802.1AR|IEEE 802.1AR (Initial Device Identity, IDevID) in 802.1X-2010.IEEE 802.1X-2010, §

EtherType

1 With the advent of the IEEE 802 suite of standards, a Subnetwork Access Protocol

(SNAP) header combined with an IEEE 802.2 Logical Link Control|LLC header is used to

transmit the EtherType of a payload for IEEE 802 networks other than Ethernet, as well as for non-IEEE networks that use the IEEE 802.2 LLC header, such as Fiber distributed data interface|FDDI. However, for Ethernet,

the Ethernet II header is still used.

Jumbo frame - Adoption

1 Token ring|802.5 Token Ring can use 4464-byte frames, Fiber Distributed Data Interface|FDDI can use 4352-byte, Asynchronous Transfer Mode|ATM can use 9180-byte frames and IEEE 802.11|802.11 can use 7935-

byte frames

IEEE 802.6

1 It is an improvement of an older standard (also created by ANSI)

which used the Fiber distributed data interface (FDDI) network structure

Windows 98 - Networking enhancements

1 Network Driver Interface Specification|NDIS 5.0 support means Windows 98 can support a wide

range of network media, including Ethernet, Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI), token ring, Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), wide area networks (WANs), ISDN, X.25, and Frame Relay. Additional features include NDIS power management, support for Quality of service|QoS, Windows Management Instrumentation|WMI and support for a single INF file|INF file

format across all Windows versions.

Promiscuous mode

1 In IEEE 802 networks such as Ethernet, token ring, and IEEE

802.11, and in Fiber distributed data interface|FDDI, each frame includes a destination Media Access Control

address (MAC address)

Promiscuous mode

1 A non-routing node (networking)|node in promiscuous mode can

generally only monitor traffic to and from other nodes within the same

broadcast domain (for Ethernet and IEEE 802.11) or ring (for token ring or Fiber distributed data interface|FDDI)

Gordon Stitt - Biography

1 Stitt co-founded Network Peripherals in 1989 and served first as its vice

president of marketing, and then as vice president and general manager of the OEM Business Unit. Network

Peripherals was the largest vendor of the Fiber Distributed Data Interface

(FDDI) technology while it was popular. Republished in White Papers

on: FDDI Over Copper Wire by Information Gatekeepers Inc.

the mid-1980s, and was later adopted by

MADI - Transmission format

1 MADI links use a transmission format similar to Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) networking (ISO 9314), which was popular in the

mid-'90s for backbone links between LAN segments. Since MADI is most

often transmitted on copper links via 75 ohm coaxial cables, it more closely compares to the FDDI

specification for copper-based links, called CDDI.
