LEONOR ANTUNESBorn 1972, Lisbon, Portugal.Lives and works in Berlin and Lisbon.

Leonor Antunes understands her work as the hybridization of vernacular techniques and the cultural legacy of modernism. Leonor Antunes’s work refers to the legacy of modernism and its specific geometrical patterns, as well as forms and structures developed by architects and designers, mostly women, of early 20th century. Mathematics, measures, scales and the beauty of certain proportions fuel her practice. Her works enter a dialogue with the spaces they occupy, be it through the way they echo the architecture surrounding them, or by her use of the proportions as tools to develop each new installation.Charlotte 3 refers to Charlotte Perriand’s benches designed for Les Arcs.

THOMAS BAYRLEBorn 1937, Berlin, GermanyLives and works in Frankfurt.

Thomas Bayrle’s pioneering work is characterised by an obsessive preoccupation with repetition and grid structures, conceiving and representing the world around him as a multitude of social threads. Bayrle began his career as a designer and, after an apprenticeship within a textile factory, he became fascinated by mechanisation and its repetitive patterns and rhythms. From this experience, Bayrle’s work retained the motif of the human figure in the machine age and the structure of the grid. During a leisure trip to Roma, Thomas Bayrle have been very surprised by the tourists who only looked at the artworks through their iphones.

SADIE BENNINGBorn 1973, Madison, USALives and works in New York.

Sadie Benning started making experimental videos as a teenager in 1988. The low-fi black and white videos explored aspects of identity, language and memory. The form, content and poetics explored in these earlier video works has expanded over the past two decades, as the artist continues to wrestle with evolving, political, conceptual and material ques-tions. More recently, Benning has produced wall-mounted works that trouble the categories of painting, drawing and sculpture.

GUY DE COINTET1934 - 1983Moves to New York in 1965, and then to Los Angeles in 1968.

Born in Paris in 1934, Guy de Cointet migrated to New York in 1966 where he began working as an assistant for Larry Bell, who lured him to Los Angeles a year later. In the city’s passionately Minimalist context he built up a body of work based on another, theoretically simple form: language. Firstly using his mother tongue, French, in opposition to the language of the country he was living in, then the English. In 1971 he published his first work, ACRCIT: a veritable codex, a newspaper analysing verbal structures. The same year he made lots of drawings as he pursued his work on an alphabet at once innovative and imaginary, intermingling typefaces, sources and modes of presentation, and recreating sentences and grammatical and linguistic formulae. Equally influenced by Ferdinand de Saussure and Raymond Roussel, he developed systems in which language was both code and image.

ELIZA DOUGLASBorn 1984, USALives and works in Frankfurt, Germany

Eliza Douglas studied with Amy Sillman and Willem de Rooij at the Städelschule in Frankfurt. She only recently came to painting because « it felt like a region in which there would be no buffer, nothing to hide behind ». Strangely, the body is omnipresent yet absent of these works.

PIERRE JOSEPHBorn 1965, Caen, FranceLives and works in Paris

In the 1990s, Pierre Joseph has explored the potential of virtual fields, role-playing and re-enactment of art works and situations. He has introduced characters of contemporary pop culture, cartoons, cult films and comics into the “un-usual” world of contemporary art. This practice has led him to analyse the interaction of his works with the spectators, actors in spite of themselves. Since the end of the 90’s, he has focused on the handing down of knowledge by undertaking different positions. This photography is part of a new body of work which refers directly to Pierre Joseph Redouté, a renowned botanist from the XVIII century.

ADRIANA LARABorn 1978, Mexico City.Lives and works in Mexico City.

Working with multiple layered references, symbols, popular culture and on-going collaborations with other artists, Adriana Lara creates objects, installations, videos, performances and events where readability is split and representation therefore changes in direction. The formal cause in Adriana Lara’s work acts as an idea that rotates spirally between determination and space. Shapes in this manner suggest side views for a fragmented representation, where both conventions and possibilities coexist, adaptability of form surpassing its own logic.

INGRID LUCHEBorn 1971, Antibes, France.Lives and works in Paris.

Ingrid Luche develops a research on our sensitive perception of architecture and its return through photography and installation. Sometimes making play with persistence of vision relating to places she has known or simply fantasised, her intriguing pieces endlessly challenge our spatial perceptions, notably by generating a kind of intermediate time frame: a no longer extant present, a déjà vu future. Some imprints of the Villa Arson walls have been collected on clay then glazed and fired to create masks.

ROB PRUITTBorn 1964 , Washington DC.Lives and works in New York.

Playful critic of the art world structures, in the line of pop artists, the work of Rob Pruitt is declined through the organization of both sensational and simple actions. Pruitt reveals the creative potential that lies at the heart of our everyday life.

TORBJØRN RØDLANDBorn 1970, Stavanger, Norway.Lives and works in Los Angeles.

In the photographs of Torbjørn Rødland, reality is constantly questioned, renegotiated. At first sight mundane, situations put in place by Rødland appear strange, often deliciously acidic and offset. They explore a wide range of emotional possibilities. A form of psychological realism? These photographs are indeed before, behind, above and below any conceivable image-making possibilities.

BRUNO SERRALONGUEBorn 1968, Chatellerault, FranceLives and works in Paris.

The works of Bruno Serralongue explore the role of the photographer and its position vis-à-vis the subject. Often political, his photographs are involved in all aspects of the production of the image. Thus, his work is as much an investigation into the political moment as an investigation of the representation itself. Notre-Dame-des-Landes, which began in 2014 and is still in progress, deals with the site of the planned airport near the French city of Nantes, now occupied by a large number of people who oppose the project. Alternative ways of living are being promoted in what the campaigners have proclaimed a ZAD (zone à défendre, ‘zone to be defended’). Since then, naturalists are looking for protected species located on this area.

SHIMABUKUBorn 1969, Kobe, Japan. Lives and works in Okinawa.

Shimabuku homes in closely on the everyday objects, searching for differences between identical products, or what different objects have in common. This poetic observation of nature becomes an opportunity for life lessons, for reconsideration of rushed judgements. Reminiscent of Robert Filliou’s «bricolage» («…do something else…»), Shimabuku raises questions relating to timeless folk wisdom or even zen philosophy.

STURTEVANTLived and worked in Paris, France

Since the 1960s, Sturtevant began to “repeat” the works of some of the most iconic artists as John, Warhol, Duchamp, Beuys o Lichtenstein. A way of generating a difference, provocating a resistance and a critical approach to the art world and his mediatic sphere. Recognized nowadays as one of the leading artists of the twenty century, in 2011 she received the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale for her entire body of work. Since her show at Air de Paris in 1998, her work is leant on a repetition of the media images (advertisment, TV show, etc.). The Greening Of America, made in 2000, is a dark green haïku.

JEAN-LUC VERNABorn 1966 , Nice, FranceLives and works in Paris.

Draughtsman, writer, dancer, choreographer, director, actor – Jean-Luc Verna is a multidisciplinary artist who places the body at the centre of his work, in all its dimensions and moods: by turns glorious, wretched, taking pleasure, suffering, altered, struggling, alive. He uses drawing the way he uses his body and his skin, as a space to both deform and disguise as well as embellish, to be transformed as much as celebrated.
