"TRUSTED ADVISER RELATIONSHIPS MAXIMIZE THE STRATEGIC VALUE OF

INTERNAL AUDIT"

 Dear Members,

I trust that all of you are enjoying the summer and getting some time off with family and friends. We completed a very successful 2016-17 year, culminating with our Annual General Meeting, dinner and awards night. Highlights of the year included:

    • Maintaining our status as a Platinum chapter under the IIA's Chapter Achievement Program     • Providing 188 hours of CPE training     • Recognizing 47 new Chapter members holding IIA designations     • Recognizing Chapter member, Sarah Gray, for winning the William S. Smith -- Gold Medal as the highest                       scoring candidate out of almost 50,000 writers of the 2016 Certified Internal Auditor examination     • Recognizing Chapter member, Kristine Tkachenko, for being honoured as one of the Top 15 Emerging                          Internal Audit Leaders under age 30     • Recognizing 244 long serving Chapter members, including Ron Dell'Agnese (40 years) and Leon Bloom (35                    years), for their years of service to the internal audit profession

These are exciting times for our profession, and, as professionals, it is our responsibility to develop trusted advisor relationships with our clients. These trusted advisor relationships maximize the strategic value of internal audit in assisting your organizations in developing world class governance, risk and control practices. The IIA's mission is to support our members through knowledge, tools, training and networking with peers. Our Chapter has a long and successful legacy of serving you, our members, and we will be building on that foundation to deliver on the IIA mission in 2017-18. Stay tuned for information about our 2017-18 calendar of activities and events.

As your President, I have one ask of you: Get Involved. The IIA is a volunteer organization, and we are only as strong our members. We have a committed and engaged Board, Executive Team, and Committee members. There are always volunteer opportunities available. I guarantee that you will find it both professionally and personally rewarding!

Finally, mark your calendar for our annual Hook 'n Slice Golf Tournament, which is set for September 12th. It's a great way to socialize with your fellow internal auditors!   Stay engaged. Stay connected.

Every year the candidate who scores the highest in the CIA exam receives the William S. Smith Award, named in honor of William S. Smith, CIA - the IIA's first chairman of the Board of Regents, a former IIA chairman of the board, and a driving force behind the development of the Certified Internal Auditor® (CIA®) program.

Awards are based on individual performance on the core CIA exam parts (parts 1, 2, and 3). With year-round testing, award recipients must pass each exam part on their first attempt within one year of taking the first exam part.

As the winner of this prestigious award, Sarah attended the IIA's 2017 International Conference held in Sydney, Australia. We caught up with Sarah to get to know a bit about her and her experience at the conference.

46,416 candidates took the CIA exam in 2016

Can you tell us a bit about your path to Manager in Audit Services at Manulife?

"I attained a Bachelor of Business Administration from Wilfrid Laurier University in October 2011. I started my professional career working at Deloitte as an external auditor and obtained my CPA, CA in January 2014. I obtainedmy CIA in June 2016."

Can you describe your experience at the International Conference in Australia?

"The conference was an amazing opportunity to meet with other internal audit professionals and share thoughts and ideas on the future of the profession and current best practices.  My favourite speakers were Chris Riddell, who spoke about the technology revolution, where we were headed and what we could do to start preparing, and Dr. Pippa Malmgren, who discussed various geopolitical risks and opportunities. Both speakers had a lot of energy and opened my eyes to new things."

Upcoming Personal Development - Breakfast Sessions

Have your say! As platinum sponsors of the IIA’s National Conference, MNP has

developed an Internal Audit Productivity Survey, to provide internal audit professionals with valuable insights on how they can effectively address

the key challenges and opportunities facing internal audit today. The survey is intended to provide professional auditors with benchmarking results on how other organizations across Canada leverage their limited

resources to address macro-economic challenges in an everchanging global climate of economic, regulatory, technological, geo-political, and environmental complexities; to, improve the productivity and scope of the internal audit function and provide opportunities to "raise the bar”.

Watch for more information from the IIA or check www.mnp.ca/ers after

September 14 for more details and to take part in the survey.  We will share results and analysis of the survey in upcoming newsletters.

MNP LLP (“MNP”) is the fifth largest full-service chartered professional                            accountancy firm within Canada providing tailored expertise in
