“Many years ago I studied Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” for my English Literature exam. The figure of Scrooge, the main protagonist in Dickens’ novel, came to mind as I was reading the gospel of today. Scrooge is a cold-hearted miser whose unbridled love of money does not allow him to enjoy life, Christmas in particular. In a manner that only Dickens could master, we see how Scrooge’s greed has made a caricature of a man out of him: “The cold within him froze his old features, nipped his pointed nose, shrivelled his cheek, stiffened his gait; made his eyes red, his thin lips blue.”

Probably it would not be fair to compare the man in today’s gospel with Scrooge. After all, he is probably only seeking justice for what should be rightfully his. And Jesus does not call him a miser either for asking what he

asked. The truth however is that, the story is so real, even for us in our times, unfortunately, that what is often termed as “justice” in situations like this can easily turn a normally human being into a Scrooge-like character. This is a story which we probably can all relate to in one way or another. We all know families, sometimes even too close to us, in which members do not talk to each other because of an inheritance problem.

In situations like this it is good to ask ourselves: what is truly most important for me? I’ve often heard people in similar situations telling me (quite forcefully, I must add) that it is not a question of money, but of justice and principle. Like Jesus, I would not like to enter into the merits of such stories, or try to decide who is right or wrong. After all, my studies led me to become a priest, not a judge. But I always take the opportunity of these occasions to ask myself, as well as the other person who is with me: what is really most important for me in my life? What do I value most? In the gospel, Jesus tries to bring home the message to the man facing him by reminding him that he will take nothing with him beyond his death-bed. A fact that cannot be denied. So the logical conclusion would be to treasure that which really matters, that which will stays with me forever.

In today’s second reading, St Paul exhorts us to: “Seek things that are above …set your minds on things that are above.”

Neither Paul nor Jesus tell us that we should not be careful with our money or possessions. It is needed and without money life would become much harder to deal with. But, the moment I find that I am losing my peace because of money, or that earthly possessions are becoming more important than my blood-relations, I realize that there is something wrong. I cannot give money that power over my life. Because, as the English philosopher Francis Bacon rightly put it: Money is a great servant but a bad master.

Only love survives beyond death.

Fr Mario

Pastor’s thoughts ...

SHARE LIFE - THANK YOU

The total sum collected by our parish during this year’s Share Life Campaign is $5,685. On behalf of all agencies who would benefit from our contributions, a big thank you! May God bless your generosity.

CANADIAN MISSIONS WEEKEND

The annual Canadian Missions Collection will be taken up next weekend, August 10 and 11. Your financial assistance helps over 600 missions in 23 mission dioceses in our country. Information material and envelopes are available with the Bulletin.

This year, the collection weekend will be combined with the Day of Prayer for Canadian Home Missions, as we also need to help our fellow Canadian Catholics spiritually. Special prayer-cards for Canadian Missions will be available for everybody next week.

THANK YOU

When a loved one dies, sometimes relatives ask people to make donations for some good cause instead of buying flowers. Recently our parish has received a few such donations. This will be money which will definitely be used well, for the good of our parish community. Flowers wither and die.

Something to think about!

ANNUAL MASS FOR THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED

The Annual Mass for the Faithful Departed, organized by Catholic Cemeter-ies and Funeral Services of the Archdiocese of Toronto is being celebrated on Wednesday, August 14, at 7:00 p.m. The Mass at Assumption Cemetery is being celebrated by Most Rev. John A. Boissonneau. All are invited.

FAMILY DAY BBQ

The Daughters of St Paul are organizing a Family Day BBQ on the premises of their shop: Pauline Books and Media, on 3022 Dufferin Street. All are invited to drop in anytime, between 12:00 and 6:00 p.m.

GO GREEN!

Go Green … Save Paper … If you would like to start receiving the Bulletin every week in your email - especially for those who live far away and do not come to St Paul’s every week - you can go on https://www.saint-paul-maltese.com/the-parish-bulletin.html and click on the link provided to subscribe. We have, so far, about 180 people receiving the Bulletin regularly.
