It hardly seems like five minutes since I sat down to welcome you to Christmas in Ferndown last year. I hope you have had a good year and you are all well.

Last year we welcomed Richard Digance to switch on our lights and start Christmas in Ferndown. This year we welcome Radio Solent’s ‘Drive Time’ presenter Steve Harris to throw the switch and start Christmas. Steve will be supported by Dawn Egging from the Egging Trust.

There will be a variety of local charity and community groups with stalls and activities and in the lead up to the switch-on, some of the entrants from the Voice of Ferndown Talent Competition, and the U3A band with additional supporting entertainment, will be performing live. Please come and support them: Saturday, 30th November from 3pm in and around the clock tower with the switch on at 5pm followed by further entertainment from West End star Richard Sidaway and free mulled wine and mince pies in the Stone Lounge.

The businesses of the town thank you for your support this year and urge you to continue that support in 2014.

May I take this opportunity to wish you a great Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Shaun FlynnPresident Ferndown Chamber of Commerce.

Of course, the Hollyberry Fayre always has a visit from Santa who will be in his twinkly grotto before heading back to the polar regions to prepare toys.

The event is the largest indoor Christmas Fayre in Dorset with 65 stalls to kickstart your shopping

and make you come away with the feeling that the festive season is well underway. On stage you will be entertained by Ferndown First School and contestants from the recent talent show ‘The Voice of Ferndown’. Performers include Catherine Levi, Samantha, Joe Webster and Jake Thompson, Gareth Woodford and Nicole McNally. Rock’n’Roll enthusiasts will enjoy Born to Jive who will be steppin’ out to Christmas songs. Outside there will be Zumba demonstrations and Samba Panache to lift your Christmas spirits!

Ferndown Upper School art students have designed the unique poster which advertises the event, while catering students will be serving up delicious goodies and hot drinks.

The trust was set up in honour ofFlt Lt Jon Egging, who tragically lost his life on the 20 August 2011 whilst completing an air display at the Bournemouth Air Festival. He was coming to the end of his first year with the world famous Royal Air Force Red Arrows aerobatic team, flying in the Red 4 position.

Jon was passionate about inspiring young people through a love of flying and enthusiasm for teamwork. The Jon Egging Trust was set up to realise his dream by Jon’s wife, Dr Emma Egging, his mother Dawn Egging, childhood friend James Godley and Red Arrows’ pilot Ben Plank.

The trust has developed an exciting an unique youth engagement programme - Blue Skies - which provides new opportunities to help disadvantaged young people achieve their full

potential. The programme connects young people with inspirational individuals and environments connected to aviation. Through this partnership, they gain a unique opportunity to build confidence, self-esteem and achieve accredited training in work and life skills.

Following the huge success of a pilot scheme, in 2013 the Jon Egging Trust’s Blue Skies programme is now reaching out to Dorset, Lincolnshire and Norfolk, providing nearly 50 young people with new opportunities.

Jon Egging Trust is a new charity with big aspirations - with fundraising support, its aim is to continue to expand nationwide to reach as many young people who need the charity’s help as possible.
