The Magic of Christmas

Page 4: Kems christmas programme 7 december 2013

CHRISTMAS, the celebration of the birth of Christ, is a magical time of festivity, in bothsecular and religious traditions, in which music has a central role. Especially in our Northernclimes the singing of carols and the telling of fairy tales and magical fantasies alongside the

Christmas Story is all part of the familiar pattern, uplifting the spirits and warming the dark, coldevenings.

In our concert this evening we hope to strike a chord with a mix of carolling, singing, playingand seasonal musical delights from near and far to resonate the bells of memory and associationfor this Magical period of the year, lighting it up once again with melody, colour and sparkle.

CHOIr NOTES‘A Virgin unspotted’ is from the canon of American ‘shape-note’ singing and is written by WilliamBillings, himself thought to be the father of American choral music. As is common in this music,the tune is in the tenor and the harmonies seem strangely bare to our twenty-first century ears.

The rest of the choir programme continues an Anglo-American theme with both newcompositions and arrangements of traditional carols. The arrangement we are singing of ‘DingDong! merrily on high’ was first performed by King’s College Cambridge at the Festival of NineLessons and Carols in 2007 and can be heard again this Christmas Eve during the final of garethMalone’s Sing while you Work programme on BBC2.

We end with a gospel flavour, with three settings of traditional American carols.Ian Chesworth

OrCHESTrA NOTESMagic Flute Overture (Die Zauberflöte), K620 MOZArT

Mozart’s Fairy Tale Opera of 1791 was written in the last year of his life while he was alsocreating the Clarinet Concerto, the Opera Clemenza di Tito and the Requiem. It is a singspiel – anopera that uses spoken as well as sung dialogue.

The Overture is an introduction to the mood of what is to follow rather than its story,characters or themes. It opens with three grand ‘Masonic’ chords (listen for the trombones whosesonorous tones add considerable grandeur to these moments) that later interrupt the allegro - inturns expressive, joyous and playful - that pervades the piece.

So we hear the music expressing nobility of spirit and the innocence and simple enjoyment ofnature.Nutcracker Suite No.1, Op.71a TCHAIKOVSKY

Tchaikovsky’s evergreen Ballet is beloved by generations of children and their parents and apermanent part of the Christmas season. Its wonderful tunes and delectable orchestration showoff the instruments in one Magical vignette after another.Suite: The Snow Maiden rIMSKY-KOrSAKOV

Said to be the composer’s favourite work, the four act opera The Snow Maiden is based on aRussian fairy tale depicting the forces of nature and the interaction of mythical characters (Frost,Spring & Wood Sprite), real people and those in between (are they real or mythological - like TheSnow Maiden?).

The Suite starts with the Opera’s Prologue, an evocation of nature awakening complete withthe twittering of birds, and the popular Dance of the Tumblers brings the set to a mercurial andblazing conclusion.
