June is Seniors’ Month in Ontario.

2018 marks the 34th annual Seniors' Month in Ontario and Community Care Northumberland once again takes the

opportunity to celebrate seniors and all their contributions, skills, interests and impact to the quality of life in our

community.

The theme this year is; "Now's the time to start something new" highlighting how aging does not prevent any of us

from leading fulfilling lives. Seniors continue to contribute to our community and we can all benefit from their

wisdom, friendship, and experience.

Building on this theme we encourage all seniors to connect with a Community Care office to see how they can start

something new. Volunteer opportunities abound throughout our program areas. Have you ever thought of;

· Delivering meals on wheels to people in need of a nutritious noon time meal and visit?

· Making a quick telephone call to isolated individuals to check on their well-being?

· Driving individuals to appointments?

· Sitting by the side of a person supporting them with their diagnosis of a life limiting illness?

· Acting in a governance capacity to help guide an organization to meet its vision and mission?

These and other volunteer opportunities are all available through Community Care Northumberland and with a

quick visit to our website or a call to an office you can learn more and ‘start something new’.

To kick off Seniors’ Month celebration the Port Hope Community Care office hosting it’s “Gloria Payne” Annual

Seniors’ Picnic and Info/Health Fair at the Lion’s Centre in Port Hope on Friday, June 1st, 2018.

Calling All Volunteers — We need some volunteers to help monitor our Hole

in One Contests on June 6th at Timber Ridge in Brighton. We have one hour

shifts that we still need to cover. Enjoy some time out on the course and say hi

to our golfers — and you never know — you might witness an ace!

Call Alicia at the Admin office for more information—1-866-514-5774.

Driving safety tips are applicable all-year round, but in the summer there are some special safety issues that should be kept in mind.

Watch out for children and pedestrians on the road. With summer and holidays, more children will be playing in the streets, and people will be out cycling, skating or walking.

Pay attention to stress and fatigue. The additional heat in summer and traffic delays can make you feel more tired and less alert than usual.

Look out for road constructions and detours as most road constructions take place during the summer.

Get your car tuned and serviced. All fluids, such as coolant, brakes, power steering, windshield washer should be checked and topped off.

Change belts and hoses. Heat and humidity can deteriorate rubber. Optimize tire pressure. Be sure to check your car manual for optimum pressure level. Use seasonal

tires if possible. Keep drinks and health snacks in your car when going out on long drives or if you expect delays on the

road. If you are going on long-trips, take regular rest stops or take a break when you stop for fuel. Keep a first-aid safety kit in your car. Make sure the contents of the box have fresh supplies.

Brighton Office Update

Very soon most of the programs here in the Brighton office will break for the summer, such as our Men’s group,

Time for Us, The Buzz-Ladies Group, and our exercise groups and workshops, all of which will start back up in

September.

That is not the case for our core programs such as Transportation and Home Help. As some of our volunteers and

workers go away during the summer, we could always use more help in both of these programs either as a driver

or becoming a subsidized worker in our Home Help/Home Maintenance programs. If you have some spare time

and a desire to help others, please call our office and ask for Anne or Leiann at 613-475-4190, or call any of our

local office’s County wide. We look forward to hearing from you!
