CCN In the News: Love to Drive?

All of our offices throughout Northumberland County provide transportation to

seniors or adults with disabilities for medical, dialysis and doctor appointments as

well as for local shopping, banking and other activities for our client’s daily lives.

Our volunteer drivers directly help individuals by supplementing the driving of

friends and family or taking on transportation for those without the ability to

drive.

Do you have a few hours, a reliable vehicle and love to drive? We have demand

for reliable, caring drivers who are willing to transport our clients to these

appointments. Imagine if you or a loved one needed a ride and no one was there to assist. You can make a

difference.

Volunteers can choose to drive daily, weekly or monthly. If you are concerned about not being able to commit

because you go away or have an irregular schedule we will work with your schedules and commitments. It is often

said “many hands make light work”, this is true as the larger the pool of transportation volunteers the more

requests that can be filled.

We have both local and long distance destination requests, you as the volunteer can choose where you are

comfortable driving and how often you are available. If you are concerned about the cost of gas, mileage

expenses are provided. For local drives, there is a flat fee and long distance drives are based on .37 cents a

kilometre.

The drive is just one part of this volunteer service. Our drivers are often a friendly ear. If a client is worried about

a doctor’s appointment or hospital test, they are there to listen and the client doesn’t have to worry alone.

If you would like to become a volunteer driver, please contact your local Community Care Northumberland office:

Health & Safety Column—Safety Tips for Yardwork

Yard Chore Safety Tips

The following safety precautions and tips will help keep you safe and injury free while you are working in your

yard:

Take 5 to 10 minutes to warm up your muscles by doing light exercises or

stretching before starting your yard work.

Dress properly for working outside in the yard by wearing long pants, a long

sleeved shirt and sturdy comfortable shoes.

Keep children and pets away from the area when you are doing yard work.

Have the right tools for the job you are doing.

Rakes should be comfortable and the right size for your height and strength.

Wear gloves while you are doing any type of yard work to help prevent your hands from blistering.

Yard work such as raking involves repetitive motions. Changing your position often helps to prevent muscle

pains and cramps from occurring.

Always watch for low branches, large rocks and tree stumps.

Be aware of uneven ground surfaces and slopes.

When you pick up leaves, do not bend over from the waist. Bend from the knees.

Do not overfill leaf bags.

Do not carry full bags of leaves over your shoulder.

When you are weeding, a half kneeling position is safer than bending forward.

Wet leaves are very slippery. Make sure to wear boots or shoes with soles that are slip resistant

When you are using a ladder make certain it is firmly on the ground. Never climb to the top of a ladder.

When you are pruning hedges, hold the pruning shears close to your body.

Home First / Home At Last Program Update

HOME FIRST – Ed and June’s story

Ed (87) and his wife June (85) were living independently in their own home until Ed had a bad fall and was

admitted to hospital with a fractured pelvis in July. Ed has been in the rehab unit since August. As a result of the

fall Ed’s mobility has decreased a great deal. While in the hospital he has been using a wheelchair to get around

and needs assistance with most of his typical daily routines (eating, personal care, getting in and out of the chair/

bed etc). June has been very concerned about how they will manage when Ed is discharged from the hospital. She

worries that she will not be able to manage his feeding tubes and help with transfers in and out of his wheelchair.

During his hospitalization June made the difficult decision to move from their home into a retirement home which

can provide extra support for Ed.

A discharge support meeting is held with Northumberland Hills Hospital (NHH) staff, Community Care Access

Centre (CCAC), Community Care Northumberland (CCN), retirement home staff and Ed and June. During the

meeting June expresses her concerns. The CCAC was able to provide an Occupational Therapist to visit the home

prior to discharge to make recommendations for setting up Ed’s bedroom area. She recommended some

furniture placement and CCN was able to provide a Home Maintenance worker to assist with this. CCAC worked

with the retirement home staff to be sure that PSW assistance would be available several times a day to assist

with feeding and personal care. CCN’s Home at Last program was able to provide accessible transportation and a

CCN PSW to assist June with getting Ed home and settled in on the discharge day. The same CCN personal support

worker (PSW) will also visit with Ed and June daily for the first couple of weeks to provide some emotional support

and caregiver relief to June.
