FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Today we celebrate Scholarship Sunday. It is a blessing to be a part of a congregation that recognizes the importance of encouraging and financially supporting youth who have made a conscious decision to better themselves. Our young people must recognize the value in attaining a good education. If you haven’t done so, please set aside a $100.00 contribution (or whatever God leads you to give…just give SOMETHING) for our Scholarship Endowment Fund. We have been able to support so many of our young people in their pursuit of higher education. Your giving makes a difference and we thank you! Special thanks to the Scholarship Ministry for their efforts as a Ministry and on today. Please don’t forget that many of our private HBCU’s were started from congregations and people of goodwill. Proverbs 22:6 states, “Train a child in the way he/she should go and when they are old they will not depart from it.” The truth of the matter is the best thing a parent can give to their child/children is Jesus and secondly a good education. Designer clothes, expensive tennis shoes and cell phones are great gifts but they don’t build character. We must encourage our children to watch television less and read more. We must encourage our children to play video games less and explore their surroundings more. We must encourage our children to be attached to their phones less and communicate with others more (adults, we need to do that one too ). One reason that I’ve always used UMI curriculum for our youth is because of their African American History emphasis every week in their Sunday School literature. My colleague in ministry, Dr. Harry White, Pastor of Watts Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, Raleigh, NC, has a book entitled, What’s Your African American Church IQ?: Test Your Knowledge of The History and Culture of The African American Church, and in it he writes this, “African American History is American history.” Sometime during this month and throughout the rest of the year let’s learn more about ourselves as a people of African descent. Find a subject matter that will help you heighten your view of yourself as an African American.

Oh yeah! Hear my heart……… I regret that more of our Married Couples are not interested in their churches’ Marriage Simulcast. Oh well, maybe it’s a sign that what the church offers is no longer valuable for the people in this church. I’m looking forward to the 20 plus who have said we are with the Ministry. Young Adults, get ready for the Young Adult Conference, February 16 – 22, 2020! Plan to be there and invite someone. On the Third Sunday, February 16th, Minister Treyvon Sinclair will preach for our Annual Young Adult Sunday. This will be a special week-long celebration with some good surprises, so come on out, and catch the “20/20 Vision”. Also coming, on February 22nd, First Calvary will serve as host for the General Baptist State Convention Ushers’ One Day Session. First Calvary, feel free to attend

this worship service and training. Oh, and Mature Adults, register and attend the Lunch and Learn…just for you on February 25th. Alright, let me try this one more time….on Sunday, February 23, 2020, WEAR SOME AFRICAN ATTIRE, SOMETHING OF AFRICAN ORIGIN, SOMETHING FROM OUR HISTORY AS AFRICAN AMERICANS…..OKAY? …AND BRING SOMEBODY THAT’S A DIFFERENT RACE WHO HAS NEVER BEEN TO A BLACK CHURCH! Remember always we are “AN EXCITING CHURCH EXCITED ABOUT ITS MISSION!”

THE DEACON’S MESSAGE

We feel like we have to justify everything we do. Think about the prevalence of updates that occur on FaceBook, Instagram, Google+, Pinterest, Twitter, or any other tools that we use for Social Media. We want people to know who we are, and why we are who we say we are… justification. It goes a little beyond that. If you walk into a room and you are absolutely beaming, and joyful, what happens? The first thing people want to know is, “What’s going on with you?” “Did you hit the lottery?” “Do you have a new man? “Do you have a new woman?” “Why are you so happy?” Do we really need to justify why we are happy? Well, we shouldn’t have to, but we feel like we do. Sadly, we try to plug everything we can in the happiness socket to get our lives to light up. Does it really take all that? Actually, no it doesn’t. Not if you have a thriving relationship with the Lord. Psalms 5:11-12 NLT, says this, “But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them sing joyful praises forever. Spread your protection over them, that all who love your name may be filled with joy.” If you take refuge in God, there is a reason to be happy. Last time I checked, joy and happiness were related. They are first cousins of praise. Are you happy?
