The past six months have been an exciting time as I transition into the role of CEO of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation. I consider it an honour and a privilege to play a leadership role in the health and wellbeing of a community that I am passionate about. I’ve never been more proud to be a Cape Bretoner! As a donor community, we thank you for your extreme generosity. Please know, the priority needs list for the Cape Breton Regional Hospital continues to grow. Our Foundation will grow to meet that need and, ultimately, help more people get the care they need here at home in Cape Breton. I am optimistic that we are well positioned to meet that challenge, given the generosity of our community and our passion for caring for one another. The Cape Breton Regional Hospital and the Foundation is here for you. Whether in our everyday life, or in times of medical crisis, our health matters most. 2012 was a year full of success and gratitude. First, I would like to thank the generous and dedicated donors to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation. Your support was truly amazing. Your gifts to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation help purchase priority equipment and fund upgrades to ensure more Cape Bretoners can get the care they need. I would also like to acknowledge the devoted staff of the Foundation. Each member of the team played an important role ensuring a seamless transition in welcoming our new CEO, Brad Jacobs, to the helm of the Foundation team. On behalf of the Board, I extend a thank you to the former CEO, Barbara Stead-Coyle, for her commitment to the Foundation over the past five years and I would like to again welcome Brad, and his family, to Cape Breton. Daniel Daix holds his son, Tyler, in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Tyler was born premature and needed the specialized care offered in the NICU.

Hudson Thomas Gouthro was born happy and healthy in the Labour and Delivery Unit at the Regional Hospital.

Samantha St. Cyr received cancer treatment in the Pediatrics Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Samantha is now in full remission.

Nicole Purcell visits the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for Renal Dialysis treatment several times a week.

Lorne Serroul is currently battling cancer for the second time in three years at the Cape Breton Cancer Centre.

Each day, the Cape Breton Cancer Centre is able to treat 150 patients. In fact, 97% of Cape Bretoners who need radiation treatment are able to get the care they need at home. This is thanks to the generous support from our donors, like you.

One patient who has come to rely on the Cape Breton Cancer Centre for care, not once, but twice is Lorne Serroul from North Sydney.

“During my first battle with cancer, I saw how special and important the Cape Breton Cancer Centre is to patients and their families. That is why my wife, Linda, and I became donors to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation. Little did I know that I would once again come to rely on the care provided at the Cancer Centre. After my treatment at the cancer centre, I can go home to my own bed, spend time with my grandchildren or go ice fishing.”

With your support, thousands of patients, like Lorne, and their families can find comfort in knowing that the Cape Breton Cancer Centre will always be here for them.

“When receiving cancer treatment, two things can happen - your income decreases because you are too sick to work and your expenses rise because you now have unexpected medical costs. For some, their medical insurance won’t cover a prescription they need to get better. For others, who have to travel a few hours each day from the Highlands or Antigonish for treatment, the cost of traveling can be crippling to their budget. This is where the importance of the Cancer Patient Care Fund comes into play.” – Tom MacNeil, Social Worker, Cape Breton Cancer Centre.

When you support the Cancer Patient Care Fund, you provide financial assistance to hundreds of Cape Breton cancer patients who need to pay for their medications that aren’t fully covered by medical insurance, or who need to travel from across the Island to get the care they need.

Every month, more than 30 patients recieve funding from the Cancer Patient Care Fund. In 2012, more than $113,000 was raised in support of the Cancer Patient Care Fund.

Here for Super SamanthaAt five years old, little girls should be worried about ponies, dolls and playing with their friends. They should not have to worry about needles, chemotherapy and making sure they have a pretty hat on to cover up their bald head.

But this was Samantha St. Cyr’s reality in 2012. For one year, Samantha received cancer treatment in the Pediatrics Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for a rare form of cancer, called Wilms Tumors.

Each year, the Pediatrics Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital treats hundreds of children for everything from broken bones to serious illnesses, like cancer.

In November 2012, doctors gave Samantha and her family great news….she is now in full remission!

It is because of donors, like you, that Samantha and hundreds of other children can be at home near their family and friends while receiving treatment.

It has been clinically proven that the environment children receive care in has a direct impact on how they respond to treatment, and how fast they recover.

In 2012 the decision was made to renovate 13 patient rooms in the Pediatrics Unit, at a cost of $130,000 or $10,000 each. To date, generous donors have committed to renovating three rooms. Once these rooms are renovated, they will provide a more comforting, home-like and less clinical environment for children and their families, who need to visit and stay in the Pediatrics Unit. The room renovations will include fresh paint, themed and child friendly murals, new furniture and entertainment systems that include DVD players, televisions, Wii’s and games in every room.

Thanks to generous donors, three patient rooms in the Pediatrics Unit are getting a makeover.

Cape BretonersEach year, hundreds of expecting couples arrive at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital to welcome their new babies into the world.

More than 900 babies from across Cape Breton Island get their start to life in the Labour and Delivery Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital every year.

In 2012, Ashley and Greg Gouthro found out they were expecting their first child and that they would be relying on the Regional Hospital for care.

“I can’t explain the joy and excitement I felt when we first found out we were expecting, and that we would soon become first time parents,” said Ashley. “I couldn’t wait to hold and meet the new baby, and experience the unconditional love that comes with being a new mom.”

“When I heard Ashley was pregnant, I couldn’t stop thinking about the future….Christmas mornings, hockey games, driving lessons, and family vacations,” said Greg. “We were both comforted in knowing that the Regional Hospital would be here for us when the time came to welcome our new baby into the world.”

While You WaitWhether waiting for something to come in the mail, or waiting in line at the grocery store, waiting can be difficult for all of us.

But when you’re in pain, feeling sick, or you’re waiting with a loved one who is sick, it can be even harder. Thanks to one generous donor, your wait in the Harris Emergency Room at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital will be more comfortable and more efficient.

In 2012 Father Albert Maroun donated $50,000 to renovate the waiting room at the Harris Emergency Department. “During the Cape Breton Cares Capital Campaign, which raised more than $5.5 million for the Regional Hospital, I watched a close relative, Lou and Kathryn Maroun, donate funds to support the Cape Breton Cancer Centre. Then a year ago, they donated $50,000 to renovate the Diagnostic Imaging waiting room at the Regional,” says Father Maroun. “He made such a generous donation because he knew how many people it would help and because he could. I wanted to do my part.” Father Maroun is very active in his community. He is Past President of the Cedars Club of Sydney, a member of the Gaelic Choir, an avid tarbish player, member of the Nova Scotia Equalization Fairness Group and a member of the Golden K Kiwanis Club of Sydney. “Through my hobbies I have made many close friends in our community—many of whom have come to rely on the Harris Emergency Department at the Regional Hospital, myself included,” commented Father Maroun. “I am fortunate to be in a position where I am able to give back to my community. I know how long the waits can sometimes be in our ER waiting rooms and I wanted to make the waiting rooms more pleasant for Cape Bretoners.”

The renovations include new and more comfortable furniture that meets infection and prevention control regulations, along with the relocation of registration and triage areas to help increase patient flow in the Emergency Room.
