I pledge...

The 4-H Policy committee in conjunction with the UCCE office has reviewed and revised the 4-H curriculum check out procedure. In an effort to make the curriculum more readily available to 4-H leaders and clubs, the following procedures will be in effect pending 4-H Council at large approval at the January council meeting: Curriculum (not including the 4-H Kits) may be checked out to currently enrolled 4-H Leaders

during regular office hours by the UCCE staff. Curriculum may be checked back in during regular office hours by the UCCE staff.

4-H ‘Kits’ may be checked out to currently enrolled 4-H Club or Project Leaders by UCCE staff. Leaders who check out a livestock ‘KIT’ must sign a check out contract (standard form) stating they are financially responsible for any missing or damaged parts upon return.

4-H ‘Kits’ may be returned to the UCCE Office, but are not considered checked in until the 4-H Librarian has personally checked them in and compared the parts of the kit to the parts list to verify all parts are there.

4-H Kits may not be checked out by another leader until the 4-H Librarian has checked them back in.

Curriculum items may be checked out for 30 days. The Librarian will contact a leader when an item is overdue.

It is recommended that leaders call the office to confirm the library is available for viewing (i.e. – there is not a meeting in the conference room).

Our club members worked together serving an annual Thanksgiving dinner to 65 mentally disabled adults within our community on November 22, 2012 at St. Joseph’s school gymnasium. Serving a fully cooked Thanksgiving meal which included turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes & gravy, corn, warm rolls with butter, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. This warm Thanksgiving meal was served by the children within the Swede Creek club. They really enjoy participating in this annual event because it makes a difference in the lives of the people they serve. The guests were very thankful for this Thanksgiving Feast and our club is honored to be able to give back to our community.

Because this show is growing too big for the old location at Shasta College, it is being held in conjunction with the 1st Annual NorCal Poultry Association Show at the Tehama County Fairgrounds in Red Bluff. We will still have showmanship, an avian bowl, a best dressed bird contest, and great awards for 4-H participants. Because this is 2 shows in one for 4-H members, their birds will be judged once in the 4-H show and again by a different judge in the open youth show. We expect competitors from all over California so this will be a great opportunity to compete against and see many more breeds of birds. There will be a sales area of show quality poultry, so even if you don’t show birds this will be a fun event to attend for anyone that likes poultry. An entry form and more information are on the NorCal Poultry website at www.norcalpoultryassoc.homestead.com and a show catalog will be coming soon.

S T A T E L E A D E R ' S F O R U M ! State Leaders Forum was exciting, entertaining and very motivating. We arrived at Asilomar at about 5 pm on Friday, found our room and went to dinner. At 7pm we went to the opening ceremony and listened to a good speaker who spoke about the public view of 4-H vs. our private view. She talked about ways to improve it and the biggest thing is we can't keep 4-H a secret! We need to show the world how 4-H has helped build the leaders and future leaders of this country and much more.

This year they had the workshops in tracks so if you were interested in healthy lifestyle, leadership, online training and new craft ideas, you could attend those classes and come home with lots of information! Dr. Barnett (4-H YDP Advisor), Sonja Armstrong (Cow Creek 4-H), Benita Moore (GIS/GPS, Jr. Master gardener) and I came home with all kinds of ideas, previews of new curriculum and projects. In 2013, there is new swine and sheep project books, new ideas and projects for gardening too. We went to a preview of iGrow which is directed at the primary members and it is going to be Fun Fun Fun!! Shasta County is a beta county for a new officer position called Healthy Officer. Sonja and I will be introducing it at the next county leaders meeting and scheduling training for those clubs that wish to participate. Saturday night we had fun. We watched section representatives play "Minute to Win It" games and had lots of laughs and met new people. They also honored all leaders and staff for their support of 4-H There was a husband and wife that were honored. They have been leaders for 50 years and have been married for 63 year. They were amazing to talk to and they are still leaders and a big part of their county. Sunday, we went to a few short classes and then closing ceremony. Next year, the SLF will be in Sacramento! It is much closer!! My hope is that we fundraise and send a large group there. The following year SLF will be up here!

Thank you for letting us go to this great event.

The Revolution of Responsibility The 4-H Revolution of Responsibility is a movement for positive change in every community across America. It is about young people taking personal responsibility for the health and well-being of themselves and their communities . . . and in so doing, creating powerful impacts right where they live.

The California Revolution: A Centennial Celebration

Service to community is a hallmark of the 4-H pledge and an integral part of the 4-H experience for youth. For the University of California 4-H Youth Development Program, the Revolution of Responsibility is a celebration of 100 years of 4-H youth connecting with their communities in new and innovative ways. It’s about the transformative power of 1,000 youth-led civic engagement projects that

collectively enhance the health and vibrancy of communities throughout California.

There is no better way to celebrate the California 4-H Centennial than by honoring the uncommon commitment of 32,009 4-H members across the state in creating change through 1,000 civic engagement projects.

Through the Revolution of Responsibility, 4-H youth are identifying needs in their communities, partnering with others to develop a solution and creating local change around vital issues affecting all Californians – issues such as childhood obesity, global climate change and the environment.

Your Revolution of Responsibility service-learning project will require careful planning – from the initial work to identify a compelling community issue to the final celebration of its completion. Use this Toolkit to help you carry out the important steps necessary to ensure success. Each section offers tips, templates, links to helpful resources, and suggested guidelines that will support your efforts. Your project has the potential to build strong community partnerships, leverage additional funding and donations of time and expertise, attract new volunteers and advocates, and create positive visibility for 4-H at the local and statewide level – use this Toolkit to help you navigate the process and achieve your goals!

Project Planning

There are many steps to consider when planning a successful service learning project – identifying an issue or community need, creating a plan to address that need, developing a timeline, budget, and assignments for your plan, and evaluating the impact of your project. The resources in this section provide the tools needed for 4-H members and adult volunteers to take a project from the idea stage to completion.

Marketing and Communication

It’s time to put your 4-H Revolution of Responsibility service learning project in the spotlight! Use these marketing strategies and sample materials to share your progress, celebrate your success, tell your story, and demonstrate your commitment to making a positive impact in your community. You’ll find helpful tips for working with the media, communicating your message clearly, implementing a social media strategy, and engaging your community in the Revolution of Responsibility.

Fundraising

When contemplating raising funds to support your 4-H Revolution of Responsibility project, knowing how and where to begin can seem daunting. This toolkit is designed to help you move to the next level in fundraising with helpful resources that will help you to identify potential donors, develop a funding request, hone your presentation skills when meeting with potential supporters, and more.

California 4-H $1,000 for 1,000 Service Learning Projects

The University of California 4-H Youth Development Program is dedicated to fostering an environment where youth and adults work together as equal partners to gain new skills and create positive community change. 4-H groups can apply for up to $1,000 to identify, plan, and carry out a service-learning project in their community. Projects will be focused on the three key content areas that form the core of all 4-H programs, Science, Healthy Living, and Citizenship. An open application process has review dates of January 15, 2013; April 15, 2013; and October 15, 2013. Call your local 4-H Office for more information.

The club worked diligently as we set up the tables, served passed out presents, and cleaned up after it was all over. They also raffled off bikes provided by the Shasta County Sheriff’s Department. Members were full of Christmas spirit as they put on elf hats and helped Santa pass out several presents to the kids. This year, 40 kids attended and out 4-H officers served a total of 73 meals. This annual dinner is one of the favorites of West Valley 4-Hers. We look forward to this chance every year and we do out best by unselfishly serving others.

For the 9th year in a row, Cow Creek 4-H supports the Salvation Army. December 2012 was the ninth year that Cow Creek 4H has helped The Salvation Army. We were bell ringers for them at least twice during the month of December. This year, Ciera Barry, Maxton LeRoy, Beau Armstrong, Brooklyn Armstrong and Nicole Zikan rang bells at Kent's Market on Airport Road in Redding and the Holiday Market in Palo Cedro. Plus, Ciera Barry and Adrienne LeRoy went and shopped for the Angel Tree. They spent $25 on a young boy and girl.

T W I N P A L M S 4 - H & S A L VA T I O N A R M Y B E L L R I N G I N G B Y S I E R R A W R I G H T On December 18th my 4H club, Twin Palms, participated in Salvation Army bell ringing in front of Raley’s on Lake Blvd for three hours. It was my first time bell ringing so it was new for me. This was a very fun community service that got everyone in the Christmas spirit. It was so fun to see little kids so excited to put coins in the kettle, and to see everyone smile when we wished them a Merry Christmas. During the first hour shift, the manager very generously treated us to hot chocolate. We also started caroling thanks to Calissa Thomas’ eagerness. We were all very surprised by how much people actually donated. Most people gave whole dollars instead of change. I guess people just feel more generous around Christmas time. This is one of the Salvation Army’s biggest fundraisers and they make a lot of money to help people in need. They are always looking for more bell ringers around Christmas time and it’s so easy to sign up and do. Just sign up for a time and location with the Salvation Army at their main office and they will provide the kettle and the bells. (An adult does need to fill out a small application and provide a copy of their driver’s license). This is such a fun way to get involved in your community; you can do this with your club, family, or friends.

Even though it was cold, we had a lot of fun doing good for our community.

SECTIONAL PRESENTATION DAY will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at Sequoia Middle School in Redding. Shasta and Trinity counties are hosting this year’s Far North Sectional event. Youth who received a gold or silver medal at County Presentation Day are eligible to enter Sectional Presentation Day. Since it is in Redding this year, this is a great opportunity to participate in a sectional 4-H event. Entry forms for Sectional Presentation Day will be posted on the Shasta and Trinity County Websites in February, and will be in the March TnT.

TIPS for advancing to sectional PD and having a successful experience include the following:

*Have a concluding statement at the end of your presentation so the judges are certain your

presentation is completed. Then, after a brief pause, ask if there are any questions from the

judges.

*When you think that the judges have finished asking all of their questions, say something like “if

there are no further questions from the judges, this concludes my presentation, thank for watching,

or listening”.

*Use foam board for the backing of your posters. They stand up much better in an easel and you can

use both sides of the foam board. You can also re-use the foam boards from year to year simply by

replacing what you have attached to them.

*Read the 4-H Presentation Manual for other tips. It is located on our county 4-H website, and on the

state 4-H website.
