SHASTA COUNTY 4-H HORSELESS HORSE PROJECT After a long year of 4-H project meetings, community events, and field trips, the Shasta County 4-H Horseless Horse Project celebrated the end of the year with a trip to Half Moon Bay for our annual trail ride. The members had a great time on the way as we passed over spectacular bridges, through dark and eerie tunnels and enjoyed the cool air and majestic views of the San Francisco skyline and the Coast. When we arrived, the members were excited to see the hotel and of course, the beach. The project checked into the Sea Horse Ranch and then had fast food on the beach. The members enjoyed the sand and swimming in the ocean but the highlight was the dolphins who chose to join us. The evening was filled with laughter and fun, and wonderful displays of the relationships that had been created over the year.

The next morning we ate a quick breakfast and hurried to the stables. The wranglers assigned horses and once everyone was saddled up we headed out. The ride was two hours of wooded trail, beach cliffs and of course, right down by the surf. When we got back to the stables everyone was smiling, complementing their horse and talking about the ride. The kids giggled and smiled over pictures of the ride and then headed back to the hotel for lunch. As the trip came to an end we went our separate ways. Some members ate on the beach, while others went for one last swim and some were even lucky enough to enjoy a drive through San Francisco and over the Golden Gate Bridge. It was definitely a trip to remember for the parents and leaders and especially, the members. We are looking forward to starting the new 4-H year and already have several events planned.

The Fall 2017 Paper Clover Campaign at Tractor Supply is scheduled for October 5th through 16th. As many of you may know, this semi-annual fundraiser goes a long way in supporting the 4-H Youth Development Program at the national, state, and county levels. The Spring 2017 campaign raised $64,828 in California alonell! At the local level, 60% of all funds raised are returned to the county where the store is located. These funds are handled by the University of California and are deposited into donor account that can be used at the discretion of county 4-H staff. In the past we have used these funds to offer camperships, purchase awards, pay rental fees for county 4-H events, and more. Want some more great news? Please contact the store nearest you to learn how you can help!

VOLUNTEERS UC ANR is aligning volunteer development requirements for all UC ANR programs statewide. Starting in 2017-18, volunteers in 4-H are required to complete between 1-3 hours of volunteer development courses annually which will be delivered online. Your UCCE 4-H Office will be sharing new enrollment procedures and training login information with you during the upcoming months, if they haven’t already. We hope you embrace this endeavor in the spirit in which it is intended: to instill a desire for life-long learning in youth. 4-H volunteers can best model life-long learning by continuing to gain new knowledge and insight themselves. Most importantly, 4-H volunteers should share their continuing education work with youth. Show them your certificates, talk about what you learned and how you hope to share that with them. In the coming months and years there will be many optional development opportunities for 4-H volunteers such as Club Leader Essentials, Chaperone training, Project Leader Essentials and much more.

2017 CALIFORNIA STATE 4-H & FFA LIVESTOCK QUIZ BOWL Grand National Livestock Exposition, Horse Show and Rodeo Saturday, October 14, 2017 The California State 4-H Office will be hosting the 2017 California State Livestock Quiz Bowl as part of the Grand National Livestock Exposition, Horse Show and Rodeo on October 14, 2017. This contest is open to both FFA and4-H members. The top 4-H team and the top FFA team at this contest will be eligible to compete at the Western National Round Up in Denver, Colorado in January.

For more information, please click here.

4-H MINDFULNESS RETREAT November 3, 2017– November 5, 2017 Registration is now open and the deadline is October 1st! Teens ages 13-19 and adults are welcome to spend the weekend at beautiful Camp Ocean Pines developing their health and well being. Click on the Flyer for more details.

MARATHON KIDS AND CA 4-H PARTNERSHIP! Up for a fun challenge? California 4-H is teaming up with Marathon Kids to help you start a 4-H Running project or take your Color Me Green project to the next level this year. The Marathon Kids program aligns perfectly to the goals of4-H and CMG, and we're confident you won't want to miss out on this opportunity! How does it work? Marathon Kids clubs set mileage goals, run or walk throughout the season, track their progress and earn exclusive Nike rewards for every milestone they complete. This easily fits into the CMG structure, giving you an extra tool to ensure your participants stick to their physical activity training plan over the course of the project. The best part: the team at Marathon Kids will provide Project Leaders with all the tools, training and resources you want or need to be successful. They'll even help you customize the program to fit your CMG project's needs. How to get started: As an exclusive offer to California 4-H clubs, Marathon Kids is offering a 5% registration discount. Just follow these instructions to register your CMG project as a Marathon Kids club to receive your exclusive discount. The offer is good through Nov. 15, 2017 to give you plenty of time to get organized.

Questions? Contact Anne Iaccopucci at [email protected]. Let's show the country that California 4-H is leading the way on youth physical activity!

NATIONAL 4-H SERVICE PROJECT Na onal 4‐H Service Project ‐ WW1 Memorial

The National Junior Master Gardener 4-H program has partnered with the WW1 Memorial Commission on a national service project for 4-H youth to be involved with building the WW1 Memorial. We are promoting through all of our JMG groups and state partners, but this is open for any and all 4-H groups. It is a great opportunity for youth to learn more about WW1, while also being a part of a national service project. Groups can start now, but the big push is between Sept. 5 and October 20th. Representatives from 4 winning groups will be invited to experience an expense paid trip to the groundbreaking of the National WW1 Memorial in Washington DC in November.

Groups can make a donation of $64.99 and receive 60 poppy seed packets from the WW1 Memorial Commission. They can then sell the seeds to support their program. The recommended selling price is $2 per seed packet which would generate $120. Basically the first dollar goes to fund the National WW1 memorial and the second dollar stays local for the 4-H club, school group, etc. to support their activities/programs.

Support 4-H Camp and Leadership Conferences with Tractor Supply The spring 2017 campaign raised $64,824 for California 4-H, allowing 763 youth to experience 4-H camps and leadership events such as California Focus, State Leadership Conference, and other leadership conferences.

The Fall 2017 Tractor Supply fundraising campaign is from October 4th - 15th. Updated graphics for use on your newsletters, social media and websites are available on the state 4-H website.

VOLUNTEERS ORB Support Website- is filled with both written instructions and “How To” Videos to help you navigate using the CA 4-H Online Record Book (ORB).

ORB Internet Café Training Online- Want to learn how to better use the CA 4-H Online Record Book? We will be hosting 2 online opportunities to learn ORB for staff, volunteers and youth members. This is the same training that we were offering live in counties over the past few years but now you can access from the comfort of your own home! Unable to attend either date? Not a problem, the training will be posted on our 4-H Youtube page following each training.

The live virtual trainings will take place on: Saturday, October 14, 2017 from 9am-noon Saturday, January 13, 2018 from 9am-noon Pre-registration is not necessary! Check out the flyer here for login instructions.

UCCE - S H A S TA C O U N T Y P RO G R A M N E W S Bark Beetles….. Is My Forest at Risk?

Despite the record rainfall this year, cumulative effects from drought still linger and we must stay vigilant about bark beetle epidemics. In normal years, a healthy tree fights off bark beetles by “pitching out”. Much like our own blood system, the tree floods the infection site with pitch to push out the beetle and seal the wound from secondary fungal infection. Because many trees are still stressed from the long drought, they are not as successful in producing the pitch needed to fight off these pests. Furthermore, once infected, a tree becomes an incubator for more beetles that can quickly overwhelm what little defense remains in its drought-stressed neighbors.

To identify whether or not your forest is impacted by bark beetles, look for signs!

So You Have Bark Beetles, Now What?

Remove, Enhance, Prevent. Remove infected trees to limit procreation sites and the number of potential attackers on healthy trees. Removal of infected trees also frees up light and water resources for the remaining trees, increasing vigor and improving their ability to fight off infection. When removing material, it is important to do so in a way that prevents further infestation: Bark beetles disperse and breed during the summer months. Limit spread of infection by minimizing the amount of exposed wood. Sterilize removed material by chipping or solarizing woody material. Solarize cut wood by wrapping small piles in thick (10 mil) clear plastic and leaving them in the sun. This will trap existing beetles in the firewood, prevent new beetles from colonizing your firewood, and kill existing beetles. After the dispersal period has ended in late August, solarized material may be unwrapped and burned. UCCE - S H A S TA C O U N T Y P RO G R A M N E W S OPPORTUNITIES FOR FINANCING FOR LIVESTOCK PROJECTS 2017

FSA YOUTH LOANS The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) makes operating loans of up to $5,000 to eligible individual rural youths age 10 through 20 to finance income-producing, agriculture-related projects. The project must be of modest size, educational, and initiated, developed and carried out by rural youths participating in 4-H clubs, FFA, or a similar organization. The project must be an organized and supervised program of work. It must be planned and operated with the assistance of the organization advisor, produce sufficient income to repay the loan, and provide the youth with practical business and educational experience in agriculture-related skills. Who May Borrow To qualify for a loan, the applicant must: comply with FSA’s general eligibility requirements; conduct a modest income-producing project in a supervised program of work. These loans can finance many kinds of income‐producing agricultural projects. The loan fund may be used to: buy livestock, seed, equipment and supplies; buy, rent or repair needed tools and equipment; and pay operating expenses for the project. Please contact Sandy Davidson, Farm Loan Officer at 530‐226‐2566 or email at [email protected].

STEVE MOLLER MEMORIAL BEEF PROJECT REVOLVING FUND Steve Moller was a long time member and leader of Shasta County Cattlemen’s Association and 4H Beef Leader in Contra Costa County. If ever there was a youth member interested in raising a steer for the local fair he would sell them a steer for market price and deferred payment on the steer until it was sold at the Jr. Livestock auction. In his memory a fund has been established to help youth purchase beef project animals (steers or bred heifers) that would be exhibited and sold at Shasta District Fair. Process and Procedures: 1. The funds and application process handled by Shasta Co. Cattlemen’s Association 2. The upper limit on the funds provided not exceed the market value (average price at Shasta Livestock

Auction Yard) of an 800-900 lb. commercial feeder steer in the fall plus $200 (recognizing that sometimes breeders need to charge a little more for selling project animals to youth). This no-interest loan would be repaid to Association when they receive their check from the Jr. Livestock Auction.

3. Open only to applicants qualified to exhibit at Shasta District Fair. 4. Applications will be sent to appropriate 4-H, Vocational Agriculture Instructors and Grange Leaders in

Sept. to be reviewed and decisions made by mid-October. 5. Applications will be reviewed and recipient(s) determined by a committee of two appointed by the

Shasta Co. Cattlemen’s Association Board of Directors and Karen Moller or her designee. For information associated with this revolving fund, please contact Larry Forero at 530-224-4900 or email [email protected].
