A British minister on Sun-day said it was clear that thecountry needed a tougher re -gulatory system for the Press, following an inquiry into theethics of the country's newspa-pers set up by Prime MinisterDavid Cameron.

British media reported thatmany journalists at The Sunwere furious over the so-called"witch-hunt", and at the factthat News Corp. had handedover the information to policethat led to the arrests.

The latest allegations, in-volving Sun journalists bribingpolice and public officials forinformation, are a new blowfor Murdoch's US-based NewsCorporation, which also ownsFox News and the Wall StreetJournal.

Murdoch will come to Lon-don "later in the week", a per-son familiar with the mattertold AFP. The person saidMurdoch's visit had alreadybeen planned before the arrestshappened.

(AFP) -- US scientists onWednesday reported a newadvance in using gene ther-apy to restore eyesight inpeople with a rare, inheritedform of blindness.

The therapy, which hadbeen previously tried in justone eye of 12 people, workedwell when injected into theother eye of three of the pa-tients, offering a sign that thetreatment is safe, effectiveand will not be rejected bythe body.

Despite the risks, threeadult patients from the initialstudy -- whose results werepublished in 2009 showingthat some level of vision hadbeen restored in all of themand six were no longer legallyblind -- agreed to try the ther-apy in their untreated eye.

The trio were all betterable to see in dim light after-ward, and two were able tonavigate obstacles in low-light situations. There wereno reports of ill side-effects.

The study appears in thejournal Science TranslationalMedicine.

(AFP) -- Astronomers inChile said this week they hadcreated the world's largestvirtual optical telescope byusing a special technique tocombine images from thefour most powerful devicesas if they were a single de-vice.

"This weekend we man-aged to finish the process (ofmerging the images) after al-most a year," said Jean-Philippe Berger, a scientist atthe European Southern Ob-servatory which operates theVery Large Telescope array(VLT) in Chile's high north-ern desert

"For the first time, we madescientific observations throughthis new instrument, and we

can say that it can be used."The VLT complex in

Paranal includes four large op-tical telescopes, each of whichare about 30 meters (100 feet)high and have mirrors eightmeters (25 feet) in diameter.

The astronomers broughttogether the signals receivedby the four telescopes thanksto a technique known as in-terferometry, which com-bines the images from thefour to achieve a higher reso-lution image.

This creates a virtual mir-ror which is the equivalent of130 meters (400 feet) in di-ameter and, according toBerger, improves the resolu-tion and the ability to "zoom"in on the cosmos.

"We see the surface ofstars, including objects thathave never been observed be-fore, such as some veryyoung stars or galaxies,"Berger explained.

"It is very difficult to buildlarge optical telescopes, sointerferometry was used," headded. "We have been work-ing on this for a long timeand are very excited to startdoing science" with it.

The complex is operatedby the ESO, created in 1962and which has support fromAustria, Belgium, Brazil,Britain, the Czech Republic,Denmark, Finland, France,Germany, Italy, the Nether-lands, Portugal, Spain, Swe-den and Switzerland.

(AFP) -- Brazil is on courseto dislodge the United Statesas the world's top producer ofbiotech crops in the comingyears, a leading promoter offarm biotechnology recentlysaid.

The US currently holdsthe lead with 69 millionhectares (170 million acres)under biocrop cultivation in2011, ahead of Brazil with30.3 million, Argentina with23.7 million and India with10.6 million, the Interna-tional Service for the Acqui-sition of Agri-biotechApplications (ISAAA) said.

Speaking in a teleconfer-ence from the Philippines,ISAAA President CliveJames said that while theUnited States was currentlywell ahead, "Brazil is closingthe gap very quickly" andbringing in new biocrops likesugar cane.

Brazil has eight millionhectares of sugar, the largesthectareage in the world, andis expected to increase it by50 percent in the next five

years for both ethanol andsugar production, he noted.

Biotech crops are geneti-cally modified to improve re-sistance to pests, diseases, drought and cold. They canalso be used to enhance thenutritional content of foods.

Proponents of biotechfarming say it can help ad-dress the challenges of feed-ing a growing worldpopulation by increasing cropyields in a sustainable way.

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Poplegend Whitney Houston, who died Saturday, inspired ageneration of music fans withher soaring voice describedby her contemporaries asnothing short of magical.

"She had that voice thatcould just turn a story, amelody into magical notes,"said singer Lionel Richie, acontemporary of Houston.

The 48-year-old Grammy-winner was a huge star in the1980s and 1990s, selling over170 million albums withworldwide hits including "IWill Always Love You," be-fore her career and personallife went off the rails as shedescended into a very publicbattle with substance abuse

"She was a legend. Thesepeople don't come aroundoften," British television hostand producer Simon Cowelltold CNN television. "No onecould sell a song like Whit-ney."

She was a trailblazer whoproved that a female artistcould dominate the pop mar-ket, Cowell said.

With a ferociously power-ful voice and a dazzlingrange, Houston achievedstardom as a pop-soul singer

known as "the Voice" and the"Queen of Pop".

Her fantastic success --and that of fellow pop iconMichael Jackson -- was pro-pelled by a brand new deviceat the time: the pop musicvideo.

Houston's trove of sixGrammy awards includedone for record of the year --for a soaring cover of DollyParton's "I Will Always LoveYou," and another for albumof the year for "The Body-guard."

She later parlayed her star-dom to acting success ap-pearing in hit movies like"Waiting to Exhale" and "TheBodyguard," co-starringKevin Costner.

Born on August 9, 1963 inNewark, New Jersey to a mu-sical family that includedmother Cissy Houston, agospel star, and Dionne War-wick, her cousin, she startedout as a teen model and thenmade a dazzling segue tomusic.

She was "discovered" byveteran producer CliveDavis, who oversaw each ofher hit records -- she was dueto attend his traditional pre-Grammys party on Saturday, when Houson was founddead in her hotel room.

Houston had 11 Billboardnumber one singles between1985 and 1995. Her hits in-cluded "How Will I Know,""Saving all My Love forYou," and "I Will AlwaysLove You," a Dolly Partoncover that Houston made herown megahit.

As a performer, Houstonearned a reputation as a regaldiva, but not without merit.

Grammys organizingchief Neil Portnow calledHouston "one of the world'sgreatest pop singers of alltime who leaves behind a ro-bust musical soundtrack

spanning the past threedecades.

Many stars took to Twitterto voice shock after Houstonwas found dead in the BeverlyHilton, hours before a tradi-tional pre-Grammys dinnerwhich she was due to attend.

"It's a tragedy. WhitneyHouston was the greatestsinger I've ever heard and shewill be truly missed," wroteveteran crooner Tony Ben-nett.

Houston also was a trail-blazing African-Americanbeauty, a teen model who be-came the first black cover girlon "Seventeen" magazine.

In recent years she hasbattled to revive her careerafter suffering a major careersetback after admitting druguse during an abusive rela-tionship with ex-husbandBobby Brown.

In a 2009 interview withOprah Winfrey, Houstonblamed an emotional abusiveand jealous Brown for manyof her problems, admittedthat she laced her marijuanawith rock cocaine, and re-vealed that she'd spent timein rehab.

The couple divorced in2007, with Houston gettingcustody of their daughter,

Bobbi Kristina.Her albums include: "Whit-

ney Houston" (1985), "Whit-ney" (1987), "I'm Your BabyTonight (1990), "My Love isYour Love (1998), "Just Whit-ney" (2002), "One Wish: TheHoliday Album" (2003)

After several years out ofthe spotlight, she returned tothe recording studio to makeher last album, "I Look toYou," released in 2009.

"I just took a break, whichsometimes you have to," saidHouston. "You have to knowwhen to slow that train downand kind of just sit back andrelax for a minute."
