    BUDGET-CONSCIOUS BRIDES TRIM BILL

    WITH DESTINATION WEDDINGS

(NewsUSA) - Tying the knot isnt what it used to be. The

wedding industry is as profitable as primetime football, elebrities compete for the shortest, most gimmickymarriages (72 days or less?) and the exotic appeal of aromantic getaway has led to the widespread popularity ofdestination weddings.

One in every 10 weddings features an exotic locale, ort least a location neither the bride nor groom calls home.hile theres no absolute explanation as to why destinationeddings have started a bridal takeover, the hefty price of

ypical weddings is reason enough for many -- especially ifDaddy isnt footing the bill.

If done correctly, destination weddings can be a cheaperalternative for everyone. Guests dont have to buy expensivegifts, just a ticket. All the money spent on the weddingparty, venues, refreshments, cake, reception and decor issignificantly reduced if not cut altogether, explains Nini Pardo, wedding planner at Stay in Costa Rica, an accommodationsand rental management company.

The author of Destination Weddings for Dummies, SusanBreslow Sardone, says the traditional American weddingcosts an average of $28,082, whereas destination weddingsaverage around $20,600.

Some of the cost difference is definitely a result ofresorts and hotels capitalizing on the trend. Many nowoffer the full wedding package with wedding planners, musicians, photographers, etc. We employ full-time weddingcoordinators, like myself, to craft intimate weddings at ourLos Suenos Resort, Pardo adds. Weve found it reallyappealing to budget-conscious brides.

Budget-conscious brides have become a trend as well, according to Patricia MacArthur, executive director ofWeddingStar.com -- a go-to authority on all things wedding-related. MacArthur says more brides are trimming expensesby taking the DIY route for guest favors and some decorativeelements.

For tropical weddings especially, many of the cheaper, DIYoptions are more easily packed into suitcases. For instance, colorful fabric is being used to replace flowers and nativedelicacies are replacing towering cakes.

An extra tip from the experts, when considering the perfectsetting to make your vows and possibly trash the dress: lookat locations that are one flight away from you and most ofyour guests. Direct flights tend to be cheaper and less hassle. To learn more about saying I do in Costa Rica, visit www.stayincostarica.com.

BRUSH UP ON DENTAL CARE FOR A

    TIMELESS SMILE

(NewsUSA) - It is well known that taking care of yourbody, including your teeth and gums, is an important partf healthy aging. Yet, despite recognizing the importancef oral health, many individuals are not taking the essentialteps to maintain their smile.

According to a 2008 study by the American Dentalssociation, Crest and Oral-B, The Public Speaks Up onral Health Care: An ADA and Crest/Oral-B Survey, more

han eight of 10 adults aged 50 to 64 believe maintainingealthy teeth and gums are essential to overall good health,et only a third say theyre taking the proper steps to do so.hats exactly the kind of statistic that has health expertsorried.

Many adults believe theyre doing everything they can torotect their mouth and dont realize that red gums or minorleeding during brushing or flossing can be a sign of gingivitis.ingivitis is caused by plaque bacteria at the gum line thatan cause gums to swell. If left untreated, it can progress tomore serious form of gum disease, known as periodontitis,

n infection that can be a major cause of tooth loss in adults, ays Ann Benson, RDH, Mobile Dentistry of Arizona. Someesearch suggests there may be a link between periodontitisnd other health problems, such as cardiovascular diseasend diabetes.

Now that you know more about gingivitis, here are someips to help you identify the symptoms and keep your timeless

    smile.

    * Know the signs. If your gums are swollen or bleed easilywhile brushing or flossing, you could be among the 50 percentof American adults estimated to have gingivitis.

    * Give your mouth the attention it deserves. Help preventgingivitis by brushing and flossing daily. When you brush, make sure it is for at least two minutes, including 30 secondsbrushing each section of your mouth (upper right, upper left, lower right and lower left), both morning and night.

    * Create a routine. A regular oral care routine usingproducts that protect against plaque and gingivitis isessential. I recommend that my patients use Crest Pro-Health Clinical Gum Protection toothpaste, says Benson. Itprovides Crests highest level of protection against plaquebacteria and is clinically proven to help reverse gingivitis infour weeks.

    * Eat wisely. Avoiding sugars and starches applies to adults

    and children.

    * Visit your dentist. Schedule dental appointments everysix months for a check-up and cleaning.

    A STRAINING ISSUE FOR

    POSTPARTUM MOMS

(NewsUSA) - New moms are often surprised when theyexperience a bout of constipation after giving birth, unawarethat this is actually a very common postpartum complaint.

Many women may experience constipation followingchildbirth, due to the slowdown of the digestive system

and temporary loss of muscle tone in the abdomen. Butthere are other explanations. Factors that may contributeto constipation include: medications administered forpostpartum pain, prenatal vitamins continued while breastfeeding and anesthesia administered during labor.

A fear of pushing can also cause a cycle of constipation.New moms may be hesitant to strain themselves becauseof post-childbirth tenderness, fear of tearing a stitch or painfrom hemorrhoids. C-sections can also contribute.

Mothers should know that this situation is very common. In one survey of about 1,000 new moms conducted byRussell Research in collaboration with Purdue Products, themakers of Colace Capsules, it was found that 47 percentof new moms experienced constipation or other digestive

issues after giving birth, and 89 percent of those mothersexperienced problems with bowel movements in the daysimmediately after childbirth.

There are many ways to combat this issue. While it may behard to get back into gear after the ordeal your body has justbeen through, it may help to exercise a little each day once youhave been told by your doctor that its okay. Adequate dailyfiber is also key to keeping away constipation. Eating branmuffins, high-fiber cereal and lots of fruits and vegetables isa great way to make sure youre getting your daily intake. It isalso important to drink plenty of fluids.

According to the survey, 77 percent of new mothers withconstipation took a stool softener, such as Colace Capsules.Since the active ingredient is docusate sodium, ColaceCapsules help avoid the painful straining associated with

occasional constipation. Colace Capsules is the leadingproduct recommended by doctors and pharmacists to providereliable relief. Of course, if you are pregnant or nursing, youshould consult with your doctor before use, and remember totell your doctor about any other medications you are taking.

The survey also revealed that a startling 67 percent ofnew moms were not warned about postpartum constipation. For more info, check out www.colacecapsules.com. Readthrough the prevention section to get tips on natural waysto combat postpartum constipation.

    WILL DAIRY BOOST YOUR WEIGHT-LOSS

RESOLUTION?(NewsUSA) - If weight loss and dieting are on your New

Years resolution agenda, an unlikely food group may be thehelp you need.

Consuming dairy products as part of your daily diet canhelp keep weight down, according to several studies.Findings in the Journal of Nutrition demonstrated that higherprotein, high-dairy diets shaved off belly fat and increasedlean muscle.

One hundred percent of the weight lost in the higherprotein, high-dairy group was fat. And the participants gainedmuscle mass, which is a major change in body composition, says Andrea Josse, lead author of the study and a graduatstudent in the Department of Kinesiology at McMasteUniversity.

In addition, a Harvard study, which suggests that thfood quality is more important than its calorie count, founthat eating specific high-quality foods was linked with lessweight gain over time. Its data showed that the more dailservings people ate of fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grainsand yogurt, the less weight they gained. In fact, the researcfound that each extra daily serving of yogurt prevented 0.8of a pound of weight gain.

The Nutrition and Metabolism journal reported a study iwhich participants who consumed three or more servings ofdairy a day after weight loss were able to eat more calorieswithout gaining weight than those who didnt consume dairy.

Milk is nutritionally unique in that it is a great source of nineessential nutrients: calcium, potassium, phosphorus, protein, vitamins A, D and B12, riboflavin and niacin. It provides threeof the five nutrients of concern that children do not getenough of: calcium, magnesium and potassium.

By combining a high intake of nutrient-rich dairy withregular physical activity, it wont even feel like youre tryingto lose weight.

However, as with any diet, you must be realistic. Resultstake time, so first commit to getting through January toestablish a real routine, says Alyssa Greenstein, a registereddietitian with the Dairy Council of Florida.

According to a National Health and Nutrition survey, 86percent of women and 76 percent of men fail to meet therecommended dairy intake of three servings each day. Thatmeans the majority of Americans dont have satisfactorlevels of essential nutrients like potassium, zinc, calcium andfolate. These levels plummet when dieters attempt to trimcalories by purging dairy.

    DONT TREAD LIGHTLY ON WINTER

TIRE SAFETY(NewsUSA) - With winter upon us, tire safety in cold

weather is something every car owner should be familiawith. Most drivers concentrate on tire safety in hot weatheto avoid blowouts, but the same precautions should beexercised in the winter. One of the most effective ways to bsafe on the road is to use a winter tire specially designed forcold weather.

Common all-season tires contain a tread compound thatgradually hardens when temperatures dip below 45 degrees, resulting in a decrease in traction. These tires also tendto collect winter road debris, like snow and ice, which canimpact a vehicles performance on wintry roads.

Mark Ballard, spokesman for Discount Tire Company,Americas largest independent tire and wheel retailer, advises motorists to replace all four tires with winter tires ifthey can expect to encounter snow and ice during the wintemonths. Its best to use winter tires, especially if you live inan area with extreme weather conditions where temperaturesare below 45 degrees on a consistent basis, he explains.Relying on an all-season tire to do the work of a winter tirecan be dangerous to you and other motorists.

In recent years, the Rubber Manufacturers Association(www.rma.org) developed new standards for winter traction, which led to technological advancements in the manufactureof winter tires. For example, a newer tread compoundfeaturing a higher sillica content retains tire flexibility even infreezing temperatures, allowing the tread to maintain its grip

with the highway. Also, tread block design has been greatly improved with

    BEYOND THE NUMBER: SIMPLE

    WAYS TO SAVE FOR RETIREMENT

(NewsUSA) - Remember when it was sortof fun to talk about The Number?

The Number refers to the amount ofmoney youd need to retire comfortably, andit was borrowed from the title of a 2006 bookby former Esquire editor Lee Eisenberg.Everywhere you went in those comparativelygiddy pre-crash days, it seemed, people

ere tossing around figures -- $1 million, $5illion - and often acting like itd be a cinch

o get there if they just gave up one GrandeCafe Vanilla Frappuccino a week.

possible, in the case of aging Baby Boomers- has only become more imperative.

One of the best pieces of advice we giveclients is to keep it simple, says Elaine

Smith, master tax advisor at H&R Block, the giant tax preparation firm (www.hrblock.com).

    How simple? Read on:

    * Make automatic contributions to 401(k)s. We now know what can happen if you letmarket fluctuations spook your use of thisconvenient savings vehicle. According to astudy by Fidelity Investments of millions oftheir accounts, investors who dumped alltheir allocations in stocks between October1, 2008, and March 31, 2009 (the marketcrash), and stayed out of stocks throughlast June 30, 2011 (a big upswing), saw an

average increase in account balances of only2 percent. That compares to an average 50percent increase for those who rode thingsout with a continuous allocation strategy thatincluded stocks.

    * Dont squander your raise. Consultingfirm Hay Group says the average raise lastyear was 2.8 percent. Say your salarys$50,000. Thats a $1,400 increase, or $26.92a week. If you put that money into an IRA, in10 years it wouldve grown to $3,108, basedon an 8 percent average annual return. Itsall about delaying immediate rewards onthings like your fifth pair of designer jeans, says Smith.

    * Take advantage of new fee disclosures.A new law is set to require much moretransparency in most 401(k) plans. But whywait? Financial websites let you compare

fund expense ratios, and the differencebetween an actively managed mutual fundcharging 1.75 percent and an index fundcharging only 0.07 percent -- especially if theformers performance is sub-par -- adds up.

    DRINKING WATER: AN INVALUABLE

    RESOURCE TAKEN FOR GRANTED

(NewsUSA) - You turn on the tap, andwater comes out. Period. Safe, plentifuland affordable drinking water is one ofour nations most precious resources andsomething most of us take for granted.

But what if you turned the tap and nothinghappened, or if the water you drank madeyou sick?

While pouring a glass of water may seemsimple, before it arrives at your tap thereis a complex process of collecting, storing, treating and distributing that helps ensureits availability and quality. In fact, waterutilities implement comprehensive watermanagement plans to ensure that adequateamounts of drinking water are available. These include conservation and reuse, reclamation and sourcing strategies.

Drinking water supplied by utilities is alwaystreated to remove contaminants and harmful

then delivered to residential and commercicustomers via an extensive pipe network.

Drinking water utilities are committto protecting public health and constan

monitoring and reassessing their methofor treating water to ensure its quality.part, this is due to changing governmeregulations, which periodically alter watquality standards. In addition, they mundertake other forms of treatment nexpressly required to comply with regulatioin order to ensure that drinking water meeand often exceeds the standards and neeof local communities.

For example, they may seek to remotrace compounds that are not currenregulated, and to enhance the aesthequality of the water.

Drinking water utilities carry out theservices while also managing costs aminimizing environmental impacts of thprocesses; they are committed to keepidrinking water affordable. Water utilities aother stakeholders invest more than $million each year in the Water ResearFoundation to sponsor research that enablwater utilities, public health agencies aother professionals to provide safe aaffordable drinking water to the public.

So the next time you pour a glasswater from the tap, take a moment to honthe commitment and significant investmemade to ensure the quality of that water.
