    NORTH AMERICAN

    PRECIS SYNDICATE

Winter weather depletes skin, but not merely because of low tem-peratures. Low humidity is equallyto blame, so be sure to protect andreplenish skin in the following ways:

nA drop in temperature and hu-midity can lead to depleted, chapped, even painfully sore skin.

nThe rst step: Visit a profession-al skin therapist for a personalizedbaseline assessment of the skinscondition and needs. A licensed skintherapist will examine the skin using

visual cues, under magnication andher ngertips, while asking questionsabout your lifestyle and product rou-tine, explains Annet King, directorof Global Education for The Inter-national Dermal Institute. Derm-alogicas system for this examinationand skin coaching session is calledFace Mapping and its offered at nocharge, at more than 7,000 locationsacross the U.S.A., with no obligation

to purchase products.nCleanse with tepid water anda creamy liquid cleanser. Skip hot

water and antibacterial soaps as theycan damage skin.

nBe aware that petroleum-basedproducts may exacerbate drynessand dont let skin breathe.

n While aggressive scrubs cancause microlacerations to the skin, resulting in more water loss, micro-ne powder exfoliants are safe foreven sensitive skin, gently looseningand lifting dulling cell debris fromthe surface without causing irrita-tion. After cleansing and microfoliat-ing, blot and pat skin to dry dont

    rub.

nArticial fragrances, especiallyin high-foaming bath and showerproducts and perfume-y body lo-tions, are drying and possibly sensi-tizing to the skin.

nHydrate in layers. Hyaluronicacid in serum form draws airbornemoisture to the skin. Use it to layer

beneath moisturizers to preventdehydration. After bathing, apply

body lotion to warm, damp, freshlycleansed skin. Add a few pumps of anaromatherapy massage oil to make

your body lotion extra soothing and

    comforting.nNourish and protect with bo-

tanicals. Bioactive moisturizing in-gredients, shea butter, cocoa seed

butter, avocado oil and vitamindeliver soothing and hydrating lipidsand hydrators to skin, even in ruggedconditions.

To nd a nearby licensed skitherapist and receive a complimen-tary Face Mapping skin analysisand other professional services, visi

    www.dermalogica.com or call (310900-4000.

Tips on protection against harsh weather

CARING: A professional skin therapist provides a client with a compli-mentary Face Mapping skin analysis. In addition to a consultation, a skihealth regimen should include reinforcing and replenishing the weakeneskin barrier function. (NAPSI Photo)

MONDAY,February13,2012PIONEEREASTNEWSSHOPPER 17Cancer Prevention Begins with Your Personal Choices

I have been trying to write a series on Head Problems, but keep getting side tracked by other good stuff. Thefollowing is information stolen from a column by Dr. Mercola. Cancer rates are increasing, in spite of great specialistsand much research. Even the conservative American Cancer Society states that one-third of cancer deaths are l inked topoor diet, physical inactivity, and carrying excess weight. So changing lifestyle can go a very long way toward becomingone less statistic as we aim toward perfect health:

Normalize your vitamin D3 levels with safe amounts of sun exposure and supplementation if needed. Ask your Dr.about testing your Vitamin D3 levels.

Control your insulin levels by limiting your intake of processed foods and sugars as much as possible. Avoid HighFructose Corn Syrup.

Get appropriate exercise. Exercise works because it drives insulin levels down.

Get appropriate amounts of plant based omega-3 fats. (See the Budwig Diet)

Eat according to your blood type and APO E genetic type. You will hear more about the APO E gene testing andnutrition in the near future.

Eat as many vegetables as you comfortably can. Ideally, they should be fresh, organic, raw, or steamed. Avoid deep

frying any foods. Cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, brussels sprouts, etc.) have been identified as potent anti-cancerpreventers. The brighter the color the better the vegetable is for you. Avoid White, Eat Bright.

Maintain an ideal body weight. Get enough high-quality sleep.

Reduce your exposure to environmental toxins like pesticides, household chemical cleaners, synthetic air fresheners, hand sanitizers, and air pollution.

Never start smoking, stop if you do smoke, and avoid second hand smoke.

Have tools to manage stress. Stress can activate a genetic predisposition to develop cancer. The CDC states that 85 percent of disease is caused by emotions. If this is true, then it is moreimportant than all the other physical things listed here. So make sure that stress management isaddressed. Relaxation, Meditation, Yoga, Tai Chi, Emotional Freedom Technique, the Silva Methodare some tools you can learn. A spiritual practice of your choice is extremely important.

The above are some ways to reduce your cancer risks. There are many more, but these will goa long way toward giving you a good, long healthy life.
