Dear Parents, A friend of mine once said, ‘My kids…they colour my world.’ Whilst our children undoubtedly enrich our world, they certainly bring lots of colour to it. Over the next couple of days, enjoy the artistic talents of your children as they share their creations with you. I hope you have the time to talk to them about not only the finished product, but the story that led to it’s creation and the process involved. Art is a brilliant medium for all of us, and especially

children to share their thinking and world with us…’Every Child is an Artist’! It is our creative staff who teach them the mediums to express themselves and I’m sure you’ll agree with me when you see the variety and presentations in our Art Show that we are so fortunate to have the very talented people on our staff who lead and offer the children such skills and directions. Accolades to all who have contributed to this celebration of learning, especially the Art committee, ably led by our Visual Arts teacher, Monica De Leo. Please be respectful of the artworks by not touching them (apart from the interactive area, which encourages everyone to contribute!) and keeping toddlers under control.

Parish News Parish Mission Thank you to all who supported our Parish Mission. We are very fortunate to be part of a vibrant Parish, who offers such enriching opportunities to actually take time to consider big picture questions, build our knowledge and consider our stance on various issues. Special thanks to Fr Mark and Maree O’Keefe and of course Fr Ray Sanchez.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS—RCIA The RCIA is a journey of faith—a journey of seeking, meeting new people and learning about the Catholic faith. St John’s RCIA team are inviting adults who are interested in asking questions about the Catholic faith—and about becoming Catholic to come and join us. Two information sessions have been planned:

Tuesday 6 September &

Tuesday 13 September 7.30pm in the Coghlan Centre at St John’s. (Both sessions are the same.) If you are a Catholic already—you might like to invite family members and friends who seem interested to come along—you may like to accompany them to the information meetings if asked. There is no obligation to continue if you come along. Enquiries: Maureen Campbell 0409 894 328 or Maree O’Keefe 9873 1341

Dinner for 8 If you’d like to be part of this Parish initiative, register your interest by emailing [email protected]

Fathers’ Day It was just brilliant to see so many dads enjoy breakfast with their children at school last week – and enjoy the treats they prepared and bought for them….all of this possible because of the commitment of so many. Special THANKS to Maria Abadilla, Kate Ryan and Michelle Hubbard and all who supported the children and our community - organising, preparing and serving breakfast, along with organising and preparing gifts. Thanks also to Suzie Mc Donald for sending in the photos on our front page, which I’m sure will be appreciated by many.

Parent Survey – School Strengths and Areas for Focus Insight SRC

Last week 90 families received a hard copy of a Parent Survey (via the eldest child). Your feedback is vitally important to us, so if you received a survey please complete it either online or in hard copy. If you complete a hard copy, there is a box for returns in the office. All surveys are confidential. If you received a survey and DO NOT wish to participate please return it to the office so we can distrube it to another family. Every year the school undertakes to survey ALL STAFF and a distribution of PARENTS AND

STUDENTS to ascertain the school strengths and areas for improvement. The surveys are designed by the Insight SRC and Catholic Education Melbourne office (CEM) and are completed anonymous ly and are confidential. These surveys aim to identify factors that contribute to the organizational health of our schoo l and provide valuab le information about future planning and ongoing improvement. The survey results provide key sign posts that can be used with other schoo l performance data to guide and inform conversations that are essential in reviewing our school and determining the best strategy for maintaining good practice and for bringing about improvement.

YOUR FEEDBACK AND SUPPORT IS APPRECIATED!!

Student Wellbeing News

Asking for Help is a Step Forward

Today we launched our new student online help tool, SJV HELP. This tool is accessible to students through the Student Landing Page. We encourage all students to first seek support for any issues of concern; be it the playground, classroom or online from teachers and parents. This tool is another way students can seek help when they feel in need of further support. Classroom teachers have familiarised students with this tool and we encourage all parents to also have a discussion about it.

FOOTY COLOURS DAY A great way to enjoy the footy season, especially with the Finals happening over the holidays. Everyone is invited to waer colours of their footy team next Thursday 15 September. Please leave football boots at home – too dangerous!

ICT UPDATE A FEW IMPORTANT REMINDERS…

1. School google accounts can be accessed by staff and the ICT leader for monitoring purposes.

2. Your child’s school google account is for educational purposes only and should not be used to

subscribe to sites such as…eBay, Pinterest, sporting clubs, etc. It is easy to set up a free

personal G-Mail account for these purposes. Any non-school subscriptions using the school

google account should be deleted immediately and a new account created with a personal email

account. The school will be blocking/deleting these subscriptions if necessary.

3. We continually urge parents to supervise children’s online activities. Check social media

accounts to make sure children are being safe, responsible and respectful. It is also wise to

check browsing history.

4. Our school filter system (provided by CEO) only works at school. At home, it is recommended

for parents to install their own filters to limit exposure to inappropriate material.

Education in Faith…From Carmel Foster (REC)

A LIFE OF SERVICE

No doubt you’ve heard about this one this week….

Pope Francis declared Mother Teresa as Saint Teresa of Calcutta.

Her legacy fits neatly with Pope Francis's vision of a church that strives

to serve the poor, and the ceremony was undoubtedly a highlight of his

Holy Year of Mercy, which runs until November 8.

The Missionaries of Charity and Mother Teresa, a Nobel Peace Prize

winner, are known for their commitment to caring for the dying, the

homeless and orphans gathered from the streets of India.

Kolkata Archbishop Thomas D'Souza acknowledged that Mother Teresa

was loved and respected by people of other faiths in India.

"Mother is certainly not a goddess to them," he said. "But she is deeply venerated and people -

cutting across caste, community and creed - are respectful to her work."

‘Let us imitate Mother Teresa who made works of mercy the guide of her life,' tweeted Pope Francis.

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace: where there is hatred, let me sow love;

where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith;

where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy.

IMPORTANT DATES FOR YOU…

• NO 9:15 PARISH MASS TOMORROW – Thursday 8th September • Saturday / Sunday 10, 11th September @ 6:00pm, 9:45am – Year 2 Level Masses

• No 9:30 Mass at St James

Loving God, with hope and faith we ask you to open our eyes, our hearts and minds to see first the needs of others. Help us to be models of compassion and mercy so that we, like Mother Teresa, may show

God’s tender love to all those we meet.

Amen

COMING?

P&F MEMBER SPOTLIGHTThere are just SO many inspiring people out there that are always actively contributing their time to the P&F and our school. We think it’s about time we introduce you to some of them. Each week you’ll get to meet and hear from some of these very generous parents.

WEBLINKS &EMAILS NOW CLICKABLE!

Name: Kate Ryan

Kids names: Declan Grade 6, Scarlett Grade 4 and Olivia Grade 1.

How long have your kids been at St James for? 6 years

P&F Role this year? Mothers Day stall and Fathers Day stall co-ordinator (Have been in this role about 3 years, possibly 4)

What sort of events and activities have you been involved in since joining the P&F? Um, lots??? Most of the Parent Nights, various BBQ’s, Disco, the list goes on.

Why did you choose to get involved in the P&F? I felt it was a good way to get to know other parents, as although I had established friendship groups at the school, I wanted to know the parents in my childs grade/year level.

What’s the best thing about being part of the P&F? It’d have to be the laughs we have getting things done! The other parents on the P&F who regularly help out are a hoot. The feeling of giving back to our awesome school is great too, I love St James!

What would you say to parents out there who are thinking about volunteering for the P&F? Do it! It’s fun, you meet people you wouldn’t necessarily if your child/ren are in different year levels and it is not a big time commitment. You can choose to be involved in an event or not and my kids love that I’m involved. It’s totally worth it just from that point of view!

Next Monday 12th September we will be having our last Morning Tea before the Term finishes. Please join us for a cuppa and a catch up! Jodie Benson one of our mums will be there introducing you to our P&F Tupperware Fundraiser that will be running for the next few weeks. See all the information for this fundraiser on the next two pages. Jodie will have a range of Tupperware items, order forms and catalogues for you to peruse through. Thanks to Nicole Spezza and Chrissy Lagos for co-ordinating this.

Holiday Clubs

Another term is almost over which means Holiday Club bookings are now open. There are heaps of fun things happening during these holiday clubs. Please log onto the holiday club webpage to find the program that is best suited to you.

The closest holiday club is Antonio Park in Mitcham. I have printed out the program so please come and grab one from our room if you are interest. I am not working over the holidays but Rose will be working a few shifts at Antonio Park. Please be sure to book your children in for care sooner rather than later to confirm their spot and to make sure we remain in ratio.

Preps

Over the rest of the term I will be encouraging the preps to begin to make their way to and from OSHC on their own to prepare them for next year. I will be following up and looking for them if they have not arrived within 5-10 mins. If you have any questions or concerns about this, please come and speak with me.

Hats!

With the start of term 4 approaching this means ALL children must wear hats at After School Care. Camp Australia follows the sun smart policy, which means all children need a hat and sunscreen to play outside. If your child attends OSHC on a regular basis, you can leave a hat in the OSHC room for them to use when attending.
