Introduction

Hello and welcome to our latest issue of FARMSENSE Direct

FARMSENSEa family business from a farming background

Firstly a very happy and prosperousNew Year and in particular to all of ourcustomers.

To say it has been wet is anunderstatement and I don’t want todwell on this subject for too long. However, the state of some of ourstock, particularly sheep out in thefields, is probably pretty loweverywhere right now.

No one, not even animals as hardy assheep, can cope with the incessantrain without it having some effect andtherefore it is important we doeverything we can to help them. Notsurprisingly this month’s issue is full ofproducts than can improve health andsurvival and hopefully guarantee agood crop of lambs to sell in thespring.

Weather aside, 2012 has been a greatyear for lots of reasons not least theQueen’s Jubilee, the Olympics andother great events. As a sports fanaticI can’t think of any greater year and Iwas privileged to be in Paris whenBradley Wiggins won the Tour deFrance and on the 18th green inMedinah when Martin Kaymer, aGerman, sank the winning put for the

European Ryder Cup team. It doesn’tget much better than that.

This year we have lots to look forwardto and I am confident we will see theeconomy steadily continue to recover.Farming has and always will bring itsown challenges but it is a greatbusiness to be in and we are proud tobe playing our part.

Thank you for your continued support.

Farmsense Copper Products

What time of year poses the greatest risk ofcopper deficiency?

The greatest seasonal risk of copper deficiency occursduring the winter period and continues in to earlyspring.

Are my livestock at risk of copper deficiency?

There are many factors to consider when discussingcopper deficiency. The primary factor however issoil/forage copper levels.

Where soil copper is low, forage copper will also below and as a result your livestock may not be getting allthe copper that they need.

Is copper deficiency dangerous?

Copper has an important biological role in the bodyand is required for numerous biological functions. Amild copper deficiency in an adult sheep usually resultsin general ill-thrift and reduces coat quality.

A severe copper deficiency can be much moredetrimental to livestock health.

How does deficiency affect pregnancy?

Whilst copper deficiency poses a risk for adult sheep, deficiency in the pregnant ewe can be potentially fatalfor the prenatal lamb.

Copper deficiency for only a few days or weeks of thepregnancy can prevent correct development of thelamb’s central nervous system, leading to Swaybackand severely reducing the lamb’s chance of survival.

Is my forage satisfactory?

It is important to test forage copper levels during thewinter as levels can fluctuate throughout the year.Likewise with ewes, whilst they may not be deficient incopper during the summer months, this may not bethe case during winter.

What can be done to prevent deficiency?

Identify if your livestock are at risk of deficiency, if theanswer is yes, take action. Farmsense offers a range ofcopper products, from drenches to boluses, to meet avariety of needs.

Huw and Rhian Farm run 700 - 800 beef cattle as well as 400 breeding ewes, which lamb mid January tocatch the early lamb trade. Our cattle operation consists of 150 suckler cows – mainly Belgium Blue andLimousin cross, which we bull to Limousin or Charolais Bulls. We also buy in 150 Belgian Blue x Lim calvesa year for replacements, the surplus being sold as either In-Calf Heifers or Heifers with Calves at foot, aswell as for store cattle, which we take through to finishing.

On the Farm...with Huw & Rhian Leyshon

In general how do you feel about the future of LivestockFarmers in the UK?

The Beef trade looks positive at the moment with ten years of very little profit. Also, the Lamb trade is roughly 25% down on the previous 2 years.

With a poor season weather wise this year, what lambingadvice would you give for the year ahead?

Make sure that you have looked after your ewes leading intolambing. Well timed drenches of Wormer and TraceElements/Multi-vitamins play a large part. Poor Ewe condition inlate pregnancy could result in Twin Lamb Disease or Still borns.

Do you feel there is a definite benefit to using Trace Elementand Vitamin Drenches both pre-tupping and at pre-lambing?

Yes, especially as the weather over the last 3 years has been sopoor. It also ensures that you combat trace-element deficiency andlock ups with heavy metals.

Do you carry out a similar drench at pre-bulling and pre-calving?

We drench the Cows andHeifers with NutrimaxCattle before turn-outimproves their conditionscore at grass. Wehaven’t drenched prior tocalving in the past butthis is something that webe looking at movingforwards.

You held a very successful cattle sale on your own farmrecently, is this something that you would recommend toother livestock farmers?

Yes I will be doing it again – but every farmer has his own ideasabout selling livestock their own way. I found it a good route tomarket.

Which trace elements do you feel play the biggest part ingrowing livestock?

Definitely Cobalt and Selenium with Vitamin B12 – Copper isimportant in breeding cattle. Good levels of Zinc are alsoimportant.

You tend to buy Calf Colostrum fairly regularly – do you usethis on every calf born?

Yes – all calves are given Natures Miracle. You never know bymerely watching a calf suckle if they have received enoughcolostrum. I also give every calf a 15g shot of Rotaplus to furtheraid their immune system and help prevent scour.

Of all the Farmsense products that you have used whichones would you recommend to fellow livestock farmers ?

All the Farmsense products that I have used have done what Ineeded them to and so I would recommend them all to fellowfarmers.

If you could which one thing would you try and change inBritish Agriculture?

It would be nice to know the future of Beef and Lamb prices – this will be key to the UK farmer continuing and if I could changeanything to ensure better prices in the future then that would bewhat I would do.

Farmers Weekly reports that thisextremely wet year has had adetrimental effect on UKlivestock. Heavy rain has flushedtrace elements from our Britishsoil, leaving forage lacking inimportant minerals such as zinc, cobalt, iodine, copper and iron inmany areas of the UK.

Experts are reporting that as aresult of this year’s mineraldeficient forage, livestock traceelement deficiencies are going tobe a widespread problemthroughout next year.

A trace element deficiency cancause problems with immunity, metabolism, fertility andpregnancy. It is these problemsthat are thought to becontributing towards a highincidence of early lambing andcalf losses.

Signs that a trace element

deficiency may be present includegeneral unthrift or poor-lookingcoats. By sight alone, it can bequite difficult to pinpoint specificdeficiencies, as such it is highlyrecommended to take bloodsamples and test for traceelement deficiencies.

For example, the concentration ofvitamin D3 in forage around theUK is likely to be low, due to thepast year of wet weather.Although vitamin D3 can besynthesised naturally in the skin, winter daylight hours are unlikelyto allow for enough exposure tothe sunlight to allow for adequatevitamin D3 synthesis. Preventingvitamin D3 deficiency is vital, asdeficiency can lead to thedevelopment of osteodystrophicconditions.

Similarly, vitamin A content inforage will also be low as a resultof the wet weather. Vitamin A

deficiency in sheep can limit theeffectiveness of the immunesystem as well as cause growthand development problems.

All the Farmsense drenches, which include; Nutrimax®,Maxigro® and Coppavit®, containsufficient vitamin D3 and vitaminA to prevent deficienciesdeveloping, protecting your flock.

The Farmsense range of highspecification drenches, including;Nutrimax®, Maxigro® andCoppavit® are designed tobalance cattle and sheepnutritionaldeficiencies.

The widespread concern over the Schmallenburgvirus (SBV) continues to grow. Updatedepidemiological data from the European FoodSafety Authority (EFSA) details the spread of SBVthrough Europe, indicating the presence of thevirus in new countries including Denmark,Finland, Poland, Sweden and Switzerland.

The EFSA has reiterated that the prevalence ofSBV is still quite low compared to the totalnumber of herds. For example, the maximumproportion of confirmed sheep herds per regionwas 6.6% and only 4% for cattle.

The Animal Health Veterinary LaboratoriesAgency (AHVLA) is responsible for SBVsurveillance in Great Britain. The most recentupdate from the AHVLA (as of November 30th)indicates that in Britain there have now been 715premises with confirmed SBV cases.

With no cure currently availble, it is moreimportant than ever for farmers to protect theirnewborn livestock.

Reducing the risk of WhiteMuscle Disease withColostrum

A recent article from the Journal of SmallRuminant Research investigated the effects ofsupplementing pregnant ewes with vitamin E.Their work showed that supplementationincreases blood immunoglobulin content, inparticular IgG, the body’s major immunoglobulin.

Although this is beneficial for the pregnant ewe’simmune status, it is also beneficial for thepostnatal lamb. Intramuscular injection of vitaminE increases the concentration of α-tocopherol inthe ewe’s colostrum, a form of vitamin E that ispreferentially absorbed by the body.

Vitamin E is vital for the new born lamb as adeficiency can cause White Muscle Disease, apotentially life-threatening degenerative muscledisease.

Farmsense’s Ovicol® range of lamb colostrumcontains essential vitamin E, along with the energyand IgG needed by the vulnerable new born lamb.

Colostrum for Lambs

ResearchDevelopment

ColostrumSupplementationWhen preparing for lambing theimportance of good qualitycolostrum supplementation cannot be emphasised enough.Colostrum is like breast-milk for ahuman baby – and everyone knowsthe importance of this for infantdevelopment.

Similar principals surround thegiving of colostrum supplementsto our farm-yard babies; givingthem the best possible chance forsurvival in what are harshenvironments full of pathogenicbugs and often at lowtemperatures.

Last year we sponsored anindependent blinded study tohighlight the issue of quality. Thereare many products out in themarket place and we are veryproud that our colostrum came outon top during the study.

Colostrum is a natural product andas such is subject to naturalvariations. To this end it isimportant to understand thematerial inside out andfurthermore to understand thecustomer’s demands for a

colostrum supplement.

Farmsense has a long-standinglegacy of providing an easy mixproduct to help you give youranimals all they need to fight offdeadly pathogens and providethem with extra energy so they cansustain bodily warmth.

“Colostrum itself as araw material is aseasonal product whichundergoes variousrefining steps.”

One of the most important thingsis to ensure you only usecolostrum from the first milking asthe goodness gets more dilutedthe more colostrum is collected;i.e. the second and third milkingshave less of the componentsimportant for the immunity of thenew-born animals.

It’s All About the Facts

We like facts in the R&Ddepartment and we like to quantifyeverything with numbers. We work

closely with the colostrumproducer to ensure we have all thefacts and figures about the goodcomponents of the material.

We test every batch of colostrumthat enters our facility to makesure all the numbers match beforeusing it in our products.

Premium Quality is Key

Colostrum is not a cheapcommodity and the best qualitycolostrum is always at a premium.Like with most things in life youget what you pay for so it is key totrust that your colostrumsupplement has not only beenchecked for quality of ingredientsbut has been formulated to supplyoptimal benefits for the animalsyou are raising.

We are always keen to addresscustomers’ issues and likefeedback on the products as ithelps us with future products. Inthe next issue we hope to expandon this customer feedback sectionand learn more about what otherthings you need to help you raisehealthier and thriving livestock.

The Importance of Colostrum

Every year, 10-25% of lambs born in the UKwill die before they are weaned costing Britishfarmers an estimated £50 million. This raisesserious production and welfare issues that are, however, possible to overcome with effectivemanagement routines.

Because the ewe’s placenta does not allow thetransfer of maternal immunoglobulins (IgG) it isvital that new born lambs receive an adequatesupply of antibodies through their mothers“first milk”, known as colostrum.

It is vital that a new born lamb receives anadequate supply of colostrum as this ensuresthat they get the best start to life, giving themthe antibodies needed to help prevent disease.

Immunoglobulins (primarily IgG) are importantantibodies that transfer disease resistancefrom mother to young.

A new-born lamb has no resistance to infectionand can only develop resistance by receivingimmunoglobulins from colostrum.

In addition, colostrum provides essentialnutrients for growth, gut function, developmentand heat production.

Colostrum is also energy-rich, allowing thelamb to survive during it’s first few days of life, when energy demands are high.

It is crucial that lambs receive colostrum withinthe first 24 hours of life.

Independent Colostrum StudyAn independent study in to the IgG content ofvarious colostrum products found Ovicol® tocontain the highest concentration of IgG.Colostrum quality primarily depends on theamount of antibody (primarily IgG present).

The trial was conducted by Moredun Scientific,a research and testing services to the animalhealth, pharmaceutical industries supportingthe development, registration and manufactureof veterinary medicines.
