Rankin to be judge for Hospice photography competitionSt Michael’s Hospice is launching an inspirational photography competition ‘Capture the Moment’, which is to be judged by world renowned photographer Rankin.

St Michael’s Hospice believes that it is the small, personal and individual things that matter most. It is the moments that occur in everyday life that stay with you for years to come, the cherished memories that form part of your character and stay dear to your heart.

This competition seeks to celebrate those moments special to you. The competition challenges people to take pictures of their extraordinary moment, whether that is the morning dew on a spider’s web, the first goal of the season or the smile on a child’s face on Christmas morning.

Celia Pyke-Lees, Chief Executive at the Hospice says: “We are delighted to launch this competition which reflects the ethos of the Hospice, in celebrating those special moments in life and we are thrilled that the world famous photographer Rankin is judging the competition for us.”

Winners will receive a fantasy photoshoot from Legend

Photography and their image will be displayed in a road show around the area in March next year.

Rankin said: “Photography has the power to captivate people, communities and nations. It captures moments in time like no other medium

and is used by charities across the UK to bring their cause to life and resonate with the general public. I am proud to be a judge for St Michael’s Hospice Capture the Moment photographic competition. The competition will provide a wonderful platform for local people to tell their stories and bring those extra special moments to life. I look forward to picking the winner in 2014 and receiving all the great entries.”

The competition which is open to everyone in the Hastings and Rother area launches on Monday 4th November and closes on Monday 20th January. So keep this in mind when you are snapping away over the festive season!

We at St Helen’s are committed to the Early Years Foundation Stage learning statutory requirements and the development matters in the Early Years Frame work.We believe that play is vital for children. Quite literally, it is through play that babies and young children learn, grow and have fun. It helps them understand the world and to develop socially and emotionally. Singing songs, reading together, playing games with letters, numbers and exploring the world around them, while having fun with friends gives them a head start. It also develops their confidence and helps them become independent. We provide a fun and stimulating environment which will positively influence your child‘s learning and development. To find out more why not come along and see for yourself.

The Playgroup is open Monday to Friday from 9:15-2:15, costs £4.50 per hour, and takes a maximum of 10 preschool children from ages 2-5. The small group size means the NVQ qualified staff are able to focus their attention on each child’s individual learning, helping them to develop at their own pace.

Children will learn, following the early years foundation stage. The principals of this ensures children are treated as unique, that they learn to build positive relationships, that the environment enables them to learn and that they are supported to learn through different ways and at different rates.

Motcombe Playgroup benefits from being able to offer swim sessions 3 days a week in Motcombe Pool. Swim days are held on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

The lovely people at Maverick publishing recently sent us some of their charming children's books for us to review, so we gathered together a

crack team of expert readers to give them a thorough perusal. First up is Jessica (aged 9) who read "The Black and White Club, written by Alice

Hemming and illustrated by Kimberley Scott."I thought that "The Black and White Club was a very nice read and different to

other stories. I thought it had a positive message about making friends. I think that ages 5-8 would really enjoy it but I'm nine and I still liked it" - Jessica

Next up was Lily (aged 7) who read "The Bunny that Couldn't be Found" written by Angela Mitchell and illustrated by Sarah Horne

"I enjoyed it but I thought it was a bit weird because it was about a dog and he was called Johnny Bunny, but I did like it." - Lily

Lastly, we gave "The Pet Itch" by Elli Woollard and Elina Ellis to Tabatha who is 9 years old.

"I liked the book, I thought it was funny and I think it's ideal for children aged about 8. I liked the time when they were supposed to eat the pet itch but didn't,

instead they taught him to bite." - TabathaWe also took a look at "Miss Dorothy-Jane was Ever So Vain" by Julia

Fulton and illustrated by Jona Jung. Here's my take on that one, I'm 43..."This book is written in rhyme and is packed with irreverent and cheeky humour.

It's beautifully, and brightly illustrated and I'm sure it will get kids demanding repeated readings and induce fits of giggles." - Jason

All of these books are very bright and colourful with enchanting illustrations filling each page. Each of them has been written with charm

and plenty of wit and they're bound to delight children again and again. Any or all of them would make perfect stocking fillers for Christmas. These titles are available from Waterstones bookstores or online from

Amazon. To find out more about the wide range of books available from Maverick, visit: www.maverickbooks.co.uk

If you're looking to plan a festive family day out, but don't want to travel all the way to Lapland, why not consider hopping on a London-bound train?

Tickets are now on sale for London’s spectacular Christmas destination – Hyde Park Winter Wonderland. Returning for six exciting weeks of winter festivities with FREE admission there will be even more entertainment and new attractions than before. PWR Events and The Royal Parks are thrilled to announce the main attractions that will be making a welcome return to the Capital’s most popular and dazzling winter event.

Following its sell-out success last year, The Magical Ice Kingdom will return and double in size with even more breathtaking snow and ice sculptures. The largest of its kind in the UK and created especially for Hyde Park Winter Wonderland, this awe-inspiring sub-zero experience will take you through a fantastical world of real ice and snow. This year there’s even more to explore. Take a stroll through the medieval village and enter the giants’ forest. As you walk through the trees beware of the ice trolls, then join the knights to slay the evil ogre. Follow your adventure into the ice castle, walk around inside and visit the scary dungeon… Back by popular demand is the castle’s ice slide, and new this year is the Ice Bar for a quick refreshment to help you on your way. As you continue through the Ice Kingdom take a seat in the ice swan, watch the frozen jumping fish and try your luck as you kiss the frog!

The UK’s largest outdoor Ice Rink stretching over 1,600 sq m will once again be located around the picturesque Victorian Bandstand, on which there will be live music played throughout the day and night

as skaters take to the ice for a spin. For those who want to gaze at the action from above, the iconic Giant Observation Wheel will illuminate the skyline.

Other favourite attractions making a welcome return include Santa Land, a haven for young visitors. Jump on board the LEGO DUPLO Santa Express, experience Santa’s workshop and visit Father Christmas, who will be there every day with a sack of free gifts. There will also be over 200 chalets in the beautiful Angels Christmas & Yuletide Markets offering unusual and handmade gifts and crafts, including ceramics, candles, jewellery, wooden toys, nativity scenes and Christmas decorations.

Following a sell-out run last year, the UK’s favourite circus, Zippos Circus will make a welcome return. Zippos will perform two different shows – the ever popular daytime show for all the family, Zippos Christmas Circus and an evening show for older thrill seekers, Zippos Cirque Berserk.

The ever-popular Bavarian Village will be ready to serve even more bratwurst and mulled wine whilst hosting live music throughout the day and evening. In addition to the many restaurants and bars there will be delicious food available throughout the attraction to help you warm up on a cold crisp winter’s day.

And for those thrill-seekers, there will be an array of traditional and high energy rides.

So book early for the Ice Skating, The Magical Ice Kingdom, Giant Observation Wheel and Zippos Circus to avoid disappointment and discover what 12 million visitors have already enjoyed.

Russian State Ballet and Opera House® presents "The Nutcracker"After last year’s success, The Russian State Ballet and Opera House is back in East Sussex with a new and vibrant Classical Ballet, The Nutcracker – a family orientated production with the Fairy Tale element and some added glitz from the beautiful costumes.

There will be no surprise to any that this production will be of the most delicate, intimate and powerful kind. This Company is known for its attention to details and, more particularly, for its dramatization in dance of the tragedy and beauty that this ballet is known for.

Accompanying this performance is its own, unique and enthusiastic large live Orchestra with over 30 musicians to maintain an exuberance of performance in this new production which will leave you astounded.

Alexej Ignatow the producer of Russian State Ballet & Opera House told us: “We often get asked how would you encourage people who have never seen a ballet before, to come and attend a ballet for the first time? And my instant reply is that you don’t need to be an expert in classical ballet or music. We ensure that the set and costumes make the production easy to follow. The music is beautiful and sometimes even if you are lost in the plot, just close your eyes to enjoy the music.”

The Nutcracker visits The White Rock Theatre, Hastings on 23rd November and the Congress Theatre in Eastbourne on the 2nd of December.

Call 01424 462288 for the White Rock or 01323 412000 for the Congress to book your tickets to see this fantastic, festive show.

Zindigo SingingI currently see pupils on a one to one basis, working at a local secondary school and privately, teaching singing and vocal technique. In my experience I have found that my pupils enjoy more of a contemporary approach, they choose the songs which I find ultimately makes their singing lesson more enjoyable. My first key is to promote confidence in pupils and making the lessons fun.I find extra-curricular activities to be vital in a child's development that reaps rewards. As a working single Mum of two I have found accessing such activities difficult mainly due to financial reasons. So I wanted Zindigo Singing to be accessible to all families, hence why my lessons are affordable and why I offer discounts to low income families. On a personal level working in such a field, my business reaps rewards for me also, to see a child's confidence grow, unlocking potential they never believed they had and also watching them become passionate about music as a whole. If you would like any further information about Zindigo Singing or to book a lesson - please contact 07889287892

Ask Alison...

Dear Alison,We are very lucky as our daughter is in a mainstream school with a fantastic class teacher who she enjoys working with very much. She has a range of problems including Speech and Language difficulties and Dyslexia. She has been on the Special Needs register ever since she was in Y3, she is now in Y6. The school SENCo has just explained that the system for statements is changing and that the help she was getting may not be available any more. We are hugely worried as you can imagine. Please can you help explain?

Thank you for your letter, many parents have emailed and phoned with very similar questions. Yes the statmenting procedure is in the process of changing. In East Sussex this has already happened. This is due to Government legislation on SEN. ‘Support and aspiration’ It is hoped that this will bring wide-ranging solutions in response to the difficulties facing children and young people, their families and the professionals who work with them. The green paper proposes a radically different system to support better life outcomes for young people, give parents confidence by giving them more control, and transfer power to professionals on the front line and to local communities.Instead of Statements a new Education Health and Care Plan will now take over. This will ensure that parents are far more involved in the process of identifying and supporting their children’s needs within school than ever before. Some funds are available to schools, in their budget, so that they can choose how to support children with Special Needs within their community. This may mean additional help in phonics, maths, reading or writing or support from Speech and Language specialists or Occupational Therapists. This is all very new and so as with everything new there is a transition period where all the creases have to be ironed out!!Children with SEN will still be helped and supported with their learning in a variety of ways and parents should be more involved and informed about how this will happen who will be supporting them and the aim of the support.

Dear Alison,My son is in Year 8 at secondary school and is really struggling with his work. He has just been referred onto a Learning Mentor within the school. What is a Learning Mentor? Are they qualified Teachers?

A Learning Mentors role can be slightly different within each school however their overall focus is the same. They are employed by the school to support individual children with their learning when it is felt that there is a problem or that the young person is not making the progress that teachers would expect. Learning mentors do not have to be qualified teachers however they are supported by teachers and other professionals. For many children and young people being able to work with an adult for a period of time on a one to one basis can be extremely beneficial. They are able to talk about the things that are causing them problems and then helped to deal with them. This might be difficulties with other children, managing vocabulary within Science or other subject areas, becoming highly anxious about exams, needing support to develop strategies to revise. Sometimes Learning Mentors are asked to work with children and young people so that more detailed assessments can be undertaken or to help manage behaviour and attendance. Each school has different criteria for referrals. When Learning Mentors become involved with children and young people they will contact families and share the focus of the work they have been asked to undertake. This ensures that a collaborative approach to supporting children is maintained.

Dear Alison,My daughter has just gone into Reception at our local Primary School. She has a range of special needs including Speech and Language, Dyspraxia and Sensory Processing. She doesn’t have a statement as it was felt that her needs were not severe enough and that her school would be able to meet her needs from their budget. Whilst she was in Nursery she had a 1:1 worker to support her. Now she is in Reception this isn’t available. The school says that they do not have the money to put this in place. She has

had a transition period where the Early Years team have been able to send in one of their staff to support 2 mornings a week but this is coming to an end. I am really worried that without this help things will go wrong and she will not get the support she needs.

Transitions for children and parents can be really difficult times. Schools are very aware of this and the majority of schools put a range of strategies and support in place to help children and their parents. I can understand your concerns and worries as a mum you want to ensure the best possible start within school for your daughter. You need reassurance from her school that the staff are aware of her needs and that they will be supporting her both academically and emotionally. It is really positive that the school have been able to acquire the additional support of the Early Years team. This is not just about supporting your daughter with professionals who know her and the support and strategies that have been successful in her nursery it is also about training the new staff in ways to support her when they leave. As your daughter has a range of diagnosed needs other teams will be involved in ensuring she gets the support she needs. The Speech and Language Therapy Team will be advising school on what work she needs to be doing and they will then supervise staff in school undertaking this. Her Sensory Processing needs and Dyspraxia will be met by the Occupational Therapy Team in a similar way. Before any of this work can really be done she needs to understand and explore her new environment and make relationships with the new staff within it as well as the new children. Most schools will encourage children and parents to get to know their new surroundings & staff, and then will set up meetings to help plan and support the needs of the child. You will be invited to meetings with her class teacher and or SENCo who will be able to explain what support they are putting in place, who will be delivering this and when. If you do not feel that you are being involved then I would suggest that you contact them and ask to meet.

What is Educational Psychotherapy? For parents whose children are struggling at school, stuck in their learning, anxious or depressed, who have stopped thriving or are acting out, life can become overwhelming, full of worry and confusion as they try to find help for their children. Educational Psychotherapy is a powerful approach to addressing these issues. It is a way of meeting the child’s individual learning needs, which in turn positively affects their ability to cope within the classroom.

Educational Psychotherapy is a way of working with children which combines teaching with therapeutic exploration of the emotional factors triggered by learning. It is recommended for children and young people who have become ‘stuck’ due to complex emotional barriers to learning and development.

Barriers to learning and development may manifest themselves as:• Poor attitudes to learning based on attachment

patterns, • Failure to learn, • Withdrawal, • Difficult behaviour, • Difficulty with social interactions and friendships, • Violence or aggressive outbursts, • Physical symptoms, • Anxiety, • Difficulties with transitions,

• Restlessness and an inability to focus,• An inability to make good use of the learning

environment or the teacher.

Educational Psychotherapy produces real benefits in children’s emotional well being and their capacity to learn and engage with schools. By helping children and young people overcome these emotional barriers to learning, their self esteem, resilience and skills for learning are strengthened and engagement, positive relationships and sense of well being are promoted.

With it's bright, stylishly retro interior and warm, informal welcome, entering the Car Wash Diner feels like a breath of fresh air in todays world of global restaurant chains. The custom-car style turquoise and white seating, the pool table, bar stools and quirky, stylish interior design touches all deliver that "wow" factor.

Spotlessly clean, funky decor is all very well, but a restaurant needs to have a good atmosphere too. The Car Wash Diner, certainly has that. When we visited late one Friday afternoon, we found the place buzzing with families having a good time. The staff were friendly and relaxed and all seemed to have time for a friendly chat and a bit of banter. This all combined to produce a very relaxed and child friendly environment.

In keeping with the decor, the menu offers a contemporary take on classic diner favourites, with juicy, home-made burgers, ribs, chilli, hot

dogs and if you still have room, some classic desserts to indulge in! Each plate arrives beautifully presented and generously filled. The Children's menu offers slightly smaller portions

of the same delicious food for smaller appetites and everything is very reasonably priced.

We found the Car Wash Diner to be a fantastic teatime treat for the kids, but they are also building a reputation for offering delicious breakfasts and putting on regular live music too! The stylish venue and delicious food make the Car Wash Diner an excellent venue for a special event or party. Based right on

the A21 with ample car parking, you'll find it a very convenient place to drop in.

So if you're looking for a little bit of 50's style and some fabulous home-cooked food, look no further than the Car Wash Diner!www.carwashdiner.co.uk
