SKI EQUIPMENT WINTER 12/13SKISSalomon Rocker2 90: The Rocker2 90 is set to become one of the success stories of 2012/13 as it attracts skiers buying theirfirst pair of wider skis. A rocker nose, wood core, partial sidewalls and a well thought-out shape all combine to create a go-toski for all mountain skiers wanting performance and usability. Ski price £390.00

K2 Bolt: The ISPO award winning Bolt blends a speed rocker with special reinforcements, creating a ski that is fluid and smooth, yet powerful and exceptionally grippy. ‘Torsional stability and control at high speed are the basis for superior performance’ saidthe judges on the award panel. This is the ultimate carving instrument. Ski and binding price £600.00

Atomic Alibi: Winner of the Fall-Line Ski of the Year award. A combination of features makes this an especially versatile ski, notleast the innovative Backbone technology. An ultra-lightweight titanium insert runs the length of the ski like a stabilizing backbone. As a result the Alibi runs smoothly on piste, allowing the skier to control the ski effortlessly and with precision. The Alibi is justas easy to control in powder with its 98 mm waist and All Mountain Rocker. Ski and binding price £540.00

Blizzard Black Pearl: If we’re going to mention the men’s Fall-Line winner we need to mention the women’s! The Black Pearluses Blizzard’s radical Flipcore technology to make an all-mountain ski that is incredibly stable in variable conditions and stillhave performance on hard snow and at speed. Flipcore inverts the wood core to create a ‘natural’ rocker profile, retaining theenergy of the core and still providing the suppleness required for soft snow. Ski price £440.00

Rossignol Pursuit 16 Ti: Rossignol’s Pursuit range of skis are new for 2012/13, designed for maximum fun on piste and theydon’t disappoint. The 16 Ti is the advanced/expert model, using a full wood core with titanal reinforcement for precision and en-ergy, and a Power Turn Rocker that delivers grip on piste and makes turn initiation easier. The Oversized Sidecut and Minicapconstruction provide power and control. Another award winner. Ski and binding price £525.00

Scott Jib TW: Tom Wallisch is freestyle skiing’s up and coming star and this is his pro-model, a good reason to buy the ski, butnot what makes it stand out. Herve, Scott’s genius ski designer, has developed a 3D sidecut that is comprised of a long radiusat the tip, a perfectly straight (yep – straight) section in the middle, and a short radius at the tail. The result is entirely predictablehandling, perfect stability and impressive response. Ski price £390.00

SKI BOOTSSalomon Max Series with Quest Max 120 and XMax 120: Themax series of boots represent a significant step forward for Sa-lomon boots. 3rd generation Custom Shell offers improved wrap-ping and adapted comfort through better moulding; Twin Frameprovides support, transmission and enhanced sensations; and,the Oversized Pivot reduces play for better precision. Put plainly, they fit really well and ski beautifully. Both £360.00

Atomic Tracker 130, Tracker 110W, Burner 110 and Medusa90: Sometimes it seems like advanced and expert level bootsare built for performance with comfort being a very distant con-sideration. The new Tracker, Burner and Medusa boots are ad-dressing that. They keep the hard plastic and the close fit you’dexpect for precision skiing but they add soft Live Fit zones thatconform to the foot’s shape in the area of the 5th metatarsalhead. £295.00 - £400.00

Lange RX 100LV RX110 and RX80W LV: Some of the most suc-cessful ideas are the simplest and the Lange RX range is proofof that. They’re true to what skiers actually need: good heel hold, decent toe space, impressive performance and overall comfort.Lange achieved this by relaxing the angles, changing the heelposition, using high quality plastics that fitters can effectivelyadjust, but most importantly offering the boots in different widthfittings. £265.00 - £320.00

SKI BINDINGSSalomon Guardian/Atomic Tracker: The Guardian and theTracker are the result of collaboration between Salomon andAtomic. They’re the latest free tour bindings, strong enoughfor even the best freeride skiers and also with the capability torelease the heel and set them in tour mode for walking to thevery best snow stashes and hard to reach areas. £320.00

Marker Duke EPF: The original Duke helped create the free tourcategory and after four seasons of taking skiers to new placesthis latest version improves what was already the marketleader. Binding widths have virtually not altered since the daysof 62mmm waist skis, but skis over 100mm in the waist arenow common place. By making the frame 28% wider, and shift-ing the mounting pattern, the Duke EPF isbetter suited than ever to cleanly drivewide skis. £340.00

SNOWBOARD BINDINGSNOW I.P.O: Snowboard binding design has not really changed much in the last 30 years. But out in the deepest backcountry recesses of Canada legendary snowboarder JFPelchat has for many years been secretly working away in his shed and is about to un-leash what could easily be described as the biggest evolutionary step in snow-board bindings since the highback. We could end the story there but wewon’t because like all the best stories this one takes a few more twists andturns. Once JF had his prototype built he took it around all the big snowboardbrands and door after door was shut in his face without them even looking at it.At this point JF gave up and stashed his revolutionary binding away. Now this is where our storytakes a strange turn. For years the binding sat there gathering dust until one day after a chanceconversation, JF’s prototype ended up on the feet of one of the world’s best and well known riders. This once abandoned dusty prototype suddenly became the most talked about innovation in snowboarding with everybody des-perate to ride it! Now at last after all the blood sweat and tears that went into its development Mr JF Pelchat presents the singularlargest step in the performance of a snowboard binding; the revolutionary NOW IPO. £250

SNOWBOARD BOOTSBurton Driver X: If you are looking for absolute performance and maximum support from yoursnowboard boots then the Driver X should be on the top of your list. For pretty much a decadethis boot has been the stiffest in Burton’s range and at home on the feet of the most experiencedand demanding free riders. With specific backcountry focused design and bomb proof con-struction the Driver X is the perfect choice for those riders who favour a hike, sled of split boardrather than a chair lift. £290

Nike Kaiju: The Nike Kaiju is technical freestyle at its finest. This mid flexing snowboard bootuses Nike Zoom Air cushioning in the sole for optimum dampening and shock absorption, per-fect for the most demanding freestyle riders. The liner features fully heat mouldable constructionand amazing levels of support that are enhanced with Outlast technology for optimum foot tem-perature control. Even the outsole is designed to offers maximum board feel and control to therider, now you can see why this is a Nike team favourite. £290

Switchback: This is the new binding brand from the creative ge-niuses at Bataleon. Never ones to follow convention they have rev-olutionised the way you buy bindings and, thanks to some greatinnovations, in the way you use bindings. Offering total flexibility, the Switchback binding quickly switches between a highback bind-ing for those days when you want a responsive ride and a high-back-free binding for when you want a looser and moresurf-inspired ride. You can also customise the way your bindinglooks. Select each element from loads of colourways then clipthem together tool-free to create your unique and individual set.£150/£180/£200

MOUNTAIN CLOTHING

mail order hotline 0844 372 1010

MOUNTAIN CLOTHING TECHNOLOGY 12/13Technical mountain clothing has to work... from UK mountain walkers on rain lashed ridges and alpine climbers on steep exposedfaces to those pushing their limits on the world’s 8,000m peaks... if mountain clothing fails in its intended function, lives can beat risk. For generations, mountaineers used various combinations of waxed cotton and coated nylon to keep the weather out. But whilstthe cotton solution gave some breathability, it leaked in heavy rain. Conversely coated nylon kept the weather out but sufferedbadly from condensation build up, saturating the user from within. As we know, GORE-TEX fabric came along and revolutionised mountain clothing, delivering durable fully waterproof protectionwith genuine breathability. GORE-TEX fabrics remain market leaders in mountain sports apparel but some interesting new de-velopements are coming to the market that could start to gain momentum.

GORE-TEX offer two leading-edge fabrics to today’s mountainsports enthusiast:PRO SHELL: GORE-TEX Pro Shell 3-layer fabric is extremelytough, highly breathable, durably waterproof and windproof.Garments engineered in Pro Shell fabric are designed for usein extended extreme conditions and are the first choice of ex-peditions and mountain professionals worldwide. ACTIVE SHELL: GORE-TEX Active Shell garments featurea lighter weight 3-layer construction resulting in maximumgarment weight of 400 grams. This completely new classof waterproof garment delivers extreme breathability(RET<3) and excellent next to skin comfort together withwaterproof and windproof protection. Ideal for fast forwardathletes seeking reliable protection and comfort duringhighly aerobic, done in a day activities such as fast alpineascents, trail running and mountain biking.

New to the market and getting rave reviews from users is Polartec NeoShell.Polartec looked hard at the shell garment options available to mountaineers. Withconventional microporous waterproof/breathable fabrics breathability is achievedthrough diffusion: moisture and heat create enough pressure inside the garmentenabling moisture vapor to passes through the fabric. Soft shell fabrics deliver in-creased breathability by making use of convection (a constant exchange of air allowsmore moisture vapor to escape) but trade waterproofness to achieve this greaterbreathability. Now, Polartec have launched NeoShell. This delivers the best of both worlds. Itsexclusive membrane allows air to pull moisture vapor out, even at extremely low lev-els of pressure. So it helps keep you drier during high-exertion activities whilst de-livering highly durable waterproof protection.
