President’s Message By Estrella Alan-Stephens ‘61* Hello Fellow Alumni and Friends,

Hopefully, by the time you received this newsletter, you are all enjoying spring. Cali-fornia had a disastrous year due to northern

and southern wildfires. Then after these devastating wildfires, some residents experienced hail, some parts of snow, storms with gusty winds and heavy rain along with mudslides. But California residents who suffered from these calamities will continue to survive the pitfalls contributed by nature and so the grass will soon be greener again.

I am glad to announce that our fundraising event is back here in Fremont, California. We will have a Spring Dance on June 16, 2018, at the St. James Parish Hall. Those members who reside from out-of-town can be a part of this fundraising by helping us buy or sell raffle drawing tickets. The door tickets are $40 per person and the raffle tickets are $10 per booklet of 10 tickets.

Cash prizes are as follows: 1st prize - $500; 2nd prize - $300; 2 - 3rd prizes - $100 each; 10 Consolation prizes - $25 each. Raffle ticket holders need not be present to win. Door prizes will also be raffled off dur-ing the event. (See Page 7 for the sample of tickets) Payment and raffle ticket stubs must be received by May 26, 2018, oth-erwise before the drawing starts.

Now that Philippine government is offering free college tui-tion fees for state and local schools but our underprivileged students still need fund to purchase books, school supplies/projects and pocket money for transportation. We will solely depend on the sale of these tickets to support these students under our Financial Aid Program.

In addition to the Spring Dance program, a new set of direc-tors for 2018-2020 will have their oath taking. Service awards will be given to lifetime members with 20 years of service. We hope alumni especially from Southern California to join us for fun and fellowship.

Due to the increased of stamps and printing cost, we will start cost cutting on our July issue. We will send you the newslet-ter via email using your email address in our members’ direc-tory or you can print it from our website -www.rhsaana.org. We will send copies to those who requested to receive it by postal mail. Paid members, please send me your current email address at [email protected].

This is an election year. This newsletter includes an election ballot for paid members to vote a new set of Board of Direc-tors for 2018-2020. Please mail this ballot to Bel Raimundo at 33515 2nd St., Union City, CA 94587; it must be received on or before Saturday, May 26, 2018. Include your donation, ticket payment, ballot or raffle drawing stubs in the envelope provided. A member nominating a write-in candidate should get the written or verbal acceptance or agreement of the nominee to serve on the board prior to the counting of bal-lots.

What’s New With You Compiled by Estry Alan-Stephens

History and Travel By Dr. Priscilla M. Quinn ‘61* Looking back in the past while taking a tour in the present time gives me much pleasure. Visiting places, I have come across in stories and essays about the Filipino patriots before the turn of the century offers a glimpse on their lives and activities when they actively sought Philippine inde-pendence from Spain while living away from their homeland. Whether it is a short weekend getaway or a long trip of several days, a couple or three of the books written by Ambeth R. Ocampo, a historian of the Philippines in the post-EDSA period, are tucked in my luggage. Dr. Serafin Quiason, Jr. in his introduction of Ocampo’s third book published in 1993, described his essays as having “solid re-search, peppered with spicy historical tidbits and bristling with arresting details.”

The itinerary of the Western Mediterranean cruise that my hus-band and I recently took included ports of call in Olympia, Corfu, Crete and Athens in Greece, Marseilles in France, Genoa in Italy, Malta and a three day visit in Barcelona, Spain. As we walked along the Old Port in Marseille, the story of Juan Luna y Novicio (1857-1899), Filipino painter, sculptor and political activist of the Philippine Revolution during the late 19th century, came to mind as it was in the port of Marseilles where he boarded a French mail steamer on his journey home to the Philippines upon hearing the murder of his brother General Antonio Luna (1866-1899). Accord-ingly, he arrived in Hong Kong on December 4, 1899, but he felt ill and died three days later of an apparent heart attack. Some Filipino writers and historians have posed the question on Luna’s death; heart attack or poisoning? Some referred to emotional stress brought on by several deaths in his family; a sister and the assassination of his brother, General Antonio Luna which contrib-uted to Juan Luna’s death. On the other hand, there are references to revenge as a suspected motive because earlier on while living in Paris in 1892, Juan Luna, in a fit of jealousy, murdered his wife, Paz Pardo de Tavera and her mother Dona Juliana Goricho, and wounded Paz’ brother, Felix Pardo De Tavera. As there were trag-edies in Juan Luna’s life there were also times for celebration of his notable works as an artist such as Spoliarium which won the gold medal in the 1884 Madrid Exposition of Fine Arts and El Pacto De Sangre (The Blood Compact) which is now displayed in the Malacanang Palace.

While enjoying the sights and sounds, the vibrant life, and diverse cultures that are present in modern day Barcelona, my thoughts wander into the time when Marcelo Hilario Del Pilar (1850-1896), Filipino writer, lawyer and journalist was living in this city. M.H.Del Pilar, pen name Plaridel, along with Philippine National Hero, Jose Rizal, and Graciano Lopez-Jaena, became known as the leaders of the Reform Movement in Spain. In one of his essays Ambeth R. Ocampo reflects on the angst felt by Marcelo H. Del Pilar who, in 1888, had to leave his wife and children in his home-land to escape prosecution for his anti-friar writings. Ambeth Ocampo described Del Pilar’s letter dated February 4, 1890 to his family written in Tagalog as “heart-wrenching.” In the letter, Del

Pilar shared the sad situation of living in a house that did not have heating and the freezing temperature made the condition worse. He wrote how to keep himself from shivering in the cold winter weather while living in Barcelona, he would put on sever-al layers of clothes “waistcoat, morning coat, overcoat, shoes and cap then jumped back in bed wrapping myself with two blan-kets.” It was suggested that Del Pilar’s health deteriorated due to poor diet and freezing weather. The Filipino journalist, writer, and lawyer who succeeded Graciano Lopez-Jaena as editor of La Solidaridad in 1889 died penniless on July 4, 1896 and was bur-ied in a pauper’s grave. In 1920 the remains of Marcelo H. Del Pilar were returned to the Philippines. Somehow, when I relate past events and people to places my husband and I visit, travel experience becomes more meaningful and awakens in me a strong desire to learn more about the histo-ry of the Philippines and about the people that made history dec-ades before my time.

In February 26, 2018, I had a lunch blowout and bonding with my ‘57 batchmates to celebrate our 60th anniversary reunion at Gerry’s Grill in Metro Manila, Phil. Dr. Florencio Reyes (standing 3rd from left, Corazon Ramano (next to Dr. Reyes and Leonides Saguisag (sitting, 3rd from left).

My company, Narra Biosciences, LLC, (www.narrabio.com) named after the national tree of the Philip-pines - sturdy, resilient and ever growing, is in discussion with the company in Hanoi, Vietnam, in relation with a sublicensing (from the Tagalog word “lunas” for cure) - discovered in my laboratory at UC Berkeley. I will be spending a few weeks in Hanoi as a consultant for technology transfer.

We are also in the process of selecting a manufacturer of lu-nasin product (pills, cream, lotion) in the Philippines for the global market. The selection of the Philippine manufacturer hopefully, would create new jobs and contribute to the Phil-ippine economy.

Spring, Day One

You may not shine the brightest And the sky, not the bluest You may be cold and damp like winter But, still, nothing can be sweeter

When tulips and daffodils Are in the arms of rolling hills- My daily passage to solitude and peace Under, cherry blossom trees.
