According to recent findings, “perfect absolute pitch,” which is defined as the ability to name or reproduce a tone without reference to an external standard, appears to be inherited, only to be lost if not reinforced by lessons before the age of six. Even if the child has inherited the gene for perfect absolute pitch, they will not be able to develop the ability if they have not started studying a musical instrument at a young enough age. Those who do start lessons before age six can actually hear the notes and identify them as they are heard, much as most people see and identify colors when they are seen. After age six, the ability to develop “perfect absolute pitch” decreases exponentially until 75-95% of the ability is lost and cannot be recovered.

How Do I Know if My Child Has the Potential for Musical Ability?

If you are wondering whether your child may have the genetic signs of musical talent, look over these indicators to see if you can identify any of them in your child:

Does your child:

• Sing or hum continually? • Remember and sing full songs or “on pitch” at a very young age? • Notice sounds everywhere? • Copy/make their own sounds or “sound effects”? • Figure out tunes “by ear”? • Ask to play an instrument? • Listen to the same song over and over and over… • Put on “performances” for you? • Have a relative that plays “by ear” or sings?

If you have identified three or more of the signs above in your child, then he or she should be evaluated for Musical Aptitudes before the age of six, if possible. If your child is older than six, get in right away as every single year counts!

By Bonnie Jantina teVelde

Current research tells us that music may be as much in the genes as it is in the soul.

When Was Ice cream Invented?

Many legends exist, with credit going to the Roman

Empire in the 1st Century, ancient China and Marco Polo

during the 13th Century, and a chef of King George I of

England during the 16th Century. One thing is for sure,

we’re glad someone invented it!

Ice creamThe InsIde scoop

hoW much Ice cream do We eat?

The average American consumes about 21 quarts a year,

with over 90% of households eating ice cream. That

adds up to more than 1.5 billion gallons of ice cream

made in America each year.

What Flavors do We love most?

Vanilla is king, accounting for 3 of every 10 scoops

consumed. Following that are chocolate (10%), butter

pecan (4%), strawberry (3.7%) and mint chocolate

chip (3.2%).

When Was the Ice cream cone Invented?

At the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, Ernest A. Hamwi

helped out a neighboring ice cream vendor who ran

out of bowls by rolling his crisp, waffle-like pastries

called “zalabis” into a cone shape. Today ice cream

parlors still hand-roll a fresh waffle cone in about 60

seconds in the same fashion as Ernest, while modern

machines produce about 150,000 cones a day.

by Greg Steinberger, FounderDoc Burnstein’s Ice Cream Lab

hoW dId the sundae get Its name?

Ice cream sodas became popular in the 1800s with the rise in soda fountains. When religious

leaders encouraged their congregations to avoid the “sinfully rich” ice cream sodas on

Sundays, merchants left out the soda water and created the “Sunday” dessert, which was

eventually changed to “sundae“.

What causes braIn Freeze?

When something very cold touches the roof of your mouth, nerves can cause blood vessels

in your head to swell causing the pounding pain known as “brain freeze”. It usually only last

about a minute, and is not dangerous. To stop the pain, try rubbing your tongue on the roof

of your mouth. Or try eating more slowly, (duh).

What Is the dIFFerence betWeen Ice cream and the other Frozen desserts?

• Ice Cream is a mixture of cream, milk, sweetener and flavorings, with 10-16%

milkfat from cream. Ice Cream accounts for over 60% of the frozen dessert

market.

• Gelato is similar to ice cream, with a more dense texture and more milk than cream,

(typically 5-8% milkfat). Gelato is Italian for ice cream, and currently has no minimum

milkfat standards.

• Frozen Yogurt contains milk and non-fat milk that have been cultured, plus sweeteners.

• Frozen Dairy Products/Ice Milk are frozen products containing less than 10% milkfat.

• Sorbet/Water Ice/Italian Ice contains no dairy ingredients. These frozen desserts have

fruit juices, water, sweetener, and stabilizers. Emperor Nero made sorbets over 2,000

years ago with honey and fruit juice mixed with snow and shaved ice from the

mountaintops.

• Sherbet is similar to Sorbets, but with a small amount of milkfat (less than 2%) added

for a smoother texture.

Page 18: Family Life Central Coast

Like most couples with young children, my husband and I occasionally call a sitter and head out for an enjoyable evening with no better excuse than to rediscover the joy of uninterrupted conversation.

Date night

I was officially on the hunt for a great restaurant. While

San Luis Obispo County boasts many truly outstanding

restaurants, I was intrigued with one that a friend had

suggested… “Et Voila! – the food is crazy good”, she

said, “I’m surprised you’ve never heard of it.”

Tucked away in the most unlikely of places in a clean

but unassuming strip mall just off Los Osos Valley Road

in San Luis Obispo near the auto dealerships this little

restaurant may just be one of the best-kept secrets on

the Central Coast.

As my husband, Tom, and I entered the building we

were struck by the soft light, the prominence of the

open kitchen, and the full length mural on the wall

featuring seven different French landscapes. Our

waitress, an exceptionally well-informed woman with

a beautiful French accent, seated us right away. She

walked us through the myriad of local wines on the

menu and also recommended a few of her favorite

items.

We decided to start with a soup, which was a creamy

roasted red pepper with corn concoction - it was

divine. Along with our soup, we dined on the delicious

French bread, different than anything I had ever had.

Our waitress described it as “the rustic French version

of Ciabatta baked fresh daily with garlic, rosemary, and

olive oil.” Seriously, I would have been completely satisfied with a second bowl of soup,

some more bread, and another glass of wine. At this point it was clear to both of us that this

exceptional meal would not soon be forgotten.

Next, our main courses arrived piping hot. I went with the special, a roasted duck and

braised fennel with a fresh blackberry gastrique (a fancy word for a thick, fruity sauce).

It was cooked perfectly and literally melted in my mouth. The combination of flavors was

heavenly and the recommended wine was an exceptional pair. Tom had the scallops and he

clearly made a great choice. They came with a surprisingly delicate herb risotto with saffron

sauce (a house specialty we were told) and a combination of fresh roasted baby vegetables.

My husband and I happily traded a few bites, and I can honestly say I would have been just

as delighted with his meal as I was with my own.

As were finishing our main course, the owner and head chef, Jose’ (pronounced “joe-

say”) Daban, made an appearance. He seemed to know everyone in the dining room and it

was obvious that he had a big fan club. When he stopped by our table to inquire about our

experience we both wanted to know his secret. “That’s simple,” he said, “fresh ingredients

and I cook it all myself… if I am not cooking the restaurant is not open.” He went on to tell

us that he had been cooking in San Luis Obispo for ten years, and prior to moving here had

a restaurant called J’Adore in Palos Verdes (it was no surprise when we learned later that

it was very highly rated by tough and respected food critics). It was fun to compare notes

with him as he is also married with two young children. We all agreed that date nights were

a good thing, but far too infrequent for busy parents.

Chef Daban won us over with his charming restaurant and we were ready to join the fan club.

What a truly great evening out. And, in case you were wondering about dessert… the lemon

and ginger crème brulée is to die for.

HypnoBirtHing® witH Laura SancHezHypnoBirthing® is as much a philosophy of birth as it is a technique for achieving a satisfying, relaxing, and stress free method of birthing. HypnoBirthing® teaches you and your birthing companion the art and joy of experiencing birth in a more comfortable manner. You will learn to call upon you body’s own natural anesthesia and thus lessen or eliminate discomfort and the need for medication. When a woman is properly prepared for childbirth and when mind and body are in harmony, nature is free to function in the same well-designed manner that it does with all other creatures.
