McLellan was the standout performer at the 2011 Honda/Tumut Motorcycle A c c e s s o r i e s A u s t r a l i a n Junior Dirt Track C h a m p i o n s h i p s meeting staged at Somersby on the weekend of October 30 – 31, winning all three of his classes of racing.

Ten other riders claimed an individual victory at the end of a weekend of high-quality racing action, four of them adding minor placings to their victory, but none got close to matching the efforts of McLellan.

For a number of riders, the championship marked the end of their junior racing days and none signed off in a more stunning manner than McLellan who will focus on speedway racing from later this month.

It was not all plain sailing for McLellan, who top scored in the heats in one class, he was second in the others and had to work hard and have some luck go his way in the fi nals.

But he was good enough and close enough to take advantage of the breaks that came his way.

In the fi nal of the MX

and slider class, there were two restarts before Queenslander Zachary Levy fell leaving McLellan in front, in the 100 -150cc 2 stroke class McLellan was supreme, winning all his heats and the fi nal, while in the 200 – 250cc 4-stroke class, it took McLellan half of the 6 lap fi nal to overtake West Wyalong rider Hunter Anderson who had top scored in the heat races of two classes.

While Anderson will get another crack at the juniors next year, Tumut based rider Brayden Elliott also signed off from the juniors with deserved rostrum places in two of the classes.

There were also some farewells in the girl’s classes, as several will now move into senior competition.

Mackenzie Tricker, an accomplished motocrosser, again got rewarded for an infrequent outing on the dirt

tracks with an unbeaten run to take out the 4-stroke class ahead of Sally Smith, the latter also fi nishing runner-up to Tayla Jones in the other girl’s class.

Tricker was also delighted with her effort in the MX and Slider class where she won the repechage race and then fi nished a creditable fi fth in the fi nal behind McLellan.

Besides the two girl’s classes, three of the open classes were also decided

over fi ve rounds, but none of the winners could match Tricker’s clean-sweep.

Caleb Clifton emerged on top in the 65cc 7 – U9 years class when Caleb Porter fell in the last round and was relegated to third overall, while the victories by Max Whale (85cc 4-str. Modifi ed 7 – U10 years class) and Max Croker (85cc 4-str. Modifi ed 10– U14 years class) were both only resolved in the fi nal round.

Mitchell Cluff (85cc 2 str. / 150cc 4-str. Std. Wheel 9 – U / 11 years class), Zaine Kennedy (85cc 2-str. / 150cc 4-str. Big Wheel 11 – U/13 yrs class) and Ben Cook (85cc 2-str. / 150cc 4-str. Std. & Big Wheel 13 – U/16 years class) all won fi nals after having been top scorers in the heats.

The closest points battle after the heats was in the 65cc 9 – U13 years class and fi ttingly it produced a close fi nal with Broc Pearson triumphant.

Remy Gardner showed that he had not forgotten how to ride the dirt and proved that standings after the heats can be inconsequential as he was only the fi fth top scorer, but won the fi nal of the 85cc 2-str./ 150cc 4-str. Std. Wheel 11 – U13yrs class ahead of the two riders who had been equal top scorers.

As another rider who has performed with great distinction in European road racing these past two years, Matthew Davies also looked set for a successful return to the dirt before a fall sidelined him with an ankle injury.

Unfortunately that was one of several incidents where riders were injured chasing national championship glory, but hopefully all will be back in action soon.

The theme for the camp is ‘Learning & Preparing to

Compete’.All the activities at the

camp will be focused around the detail of preparing, competing and recovering from performance.

There will be three offi cial matches against a New Zealand U18 team between 16 and 19 December.

Identifi cation for the

camp was determined by National Junior Coach Paul Gaudoin in consultation with feedback from the National Training Centre Coach’s network.

Inclusion was based on performance at National U18 & U21 Championships.

On Sunday October 23rd,

Stirling Young [10] and Sean Keogh [8] members of Woy Woy Judo Club, attended an invitation Judo Tournament at Blacktown PCYC.

This was Stirling’s fi rst competition and Sean’s second since recently being graded to Yellow Belt [Novice].

Sean took home the Gold & Bronze trophies from his fi rst competition in August at the Budokan Judo Club, Castle Hill.

The PCYC competition drew entrants from seven clubs with a total of sixty nine entrants aged from fi ve to twelve years old.

Sean’s division was Boys under 9 years under 31kg.

Sean had two bouts against players from the same club, Tiger do.

His fi rst, against Beau Holder, he won in 40 seconds with a clean osoto gari [outer reap] of his opponents leg.

The second bout against Jad Lee Reda went the full three minutes.

Jad was a point up and Sean was terrifi c in his attacks to try and take the lead.

They went to the ground in the fi nal 60 seconds, with Jad pinning Sean down.

Despite his efforts to escape, Sean ran out of time [20 second hold down time for juniors].

Sean was awarded the Silver Medal, which means he has added this to his Gold & Bronze to make the trifecta.

Stirling’s division was

Boys under 12 under 42kg. The opponents were from

Vineyard & Tiger-do. His fi rst bout was against

a much taller opponent but this did not stop his persistence to attack.

His opponents attempt to hook Stirlings leg, made an opening for Stirling to repeatedly apply his techniques, taking his opponent off balance until the fi nal throw of Ippon Seonage [shoulder throw] that saw Stirling win.

The organizers stated that, had there been a throw of the day, it would have been awarded to Stirling.

Stirling’s confi dence was on a high and although his next bout was more rigorous, he acheived the same result with him winning.

placed 3rd in the AMF Australian Masters women’s tournament after facing the world’s top tenpin bowlers at Rooty Hill.

Ms Nicoll lost fi rst place to Shannon Pkuhowsky of the US, who stepped in at the last minute to replace injured bowler Lynda Barnes, also of US.

Placing second in the tournament was Sandra Andersson of Sweden.

“Lexi played superbly throughout the AMF Australian Masters Tournament in the face of fi erce international competition” said CEO of AMF Bowling, Jordan Rodgers.

“This event is an important opportunity for our local bowlers to compete on a global stage and to raise the prestige of tenpin bowling as a competitive sport,” said Mr Rodgers.

The fi nals marked the end of a tournament that offered over $100,000 in prize

money and has been named as one of only eight major international tenpin bowling tournaments globally to form the World Bowling Tour for 2011 – and is attracting elite athletes from around the world to Australian shores.

were defeated by Blacktown in disappointing fashion in the Sydney Major League contest, losing 5-0 on Sunday October 23.

Marlins had an outstanding performance from starting pitcher Jarrett Commane, who gave up just one run over his fi rst seven innings whilst striking out eight; however, it went to waste as the Marlins’ bats failed to fi re.

Blacktown take a 1-0 lead and this seemed to spark the Marlins offence into action, Central Coast threatened to score in the 4th and 5th innings, but failed to get the big hit and bring a runner home.

Blacktown’s pitching limited Marlins to just fi ve hits as a team and Blacktowns’ defence held strong throughout the match, frustrating the Marlins.

Finally, the pressure translated into the defensive section of the Marlins’ 8th inning, when Commane fi nally tired and gave up some runs.

Kurt Eden relieved Commane of the pitching

duties and battled to get out of the inning, but not after the damage was done, with the Marlins heading into the fi nal inning trailing 5-0.

Tom O’Gorman was the pick of Marlins batters collecting two hits.

Central Coast Marlins will travel to Blacktown Internation Sportspark on Wednesday night, to take on the Blacktown Workers in the second match of this series.

2nd Grade charged home but fell just short, losing 6-5.

3rd Grade lead early but lost 9-3.

U18s continued their unbeaten start to the season, winning 7-3.

Central Coast Marlins defeated

Manly 9-1 in an historic Sydney Major League match at Watanobbi Oval, Wyong, on Wednesday night, October 26.

The match was the fi rst midweek home game for the Marlins in its fi ve years of existence.

The Marlins did the best they could to set up the platform for the Wyong venue to be a midweek fortress for travelling Sydney teams.

The Marlins offence exploded for fourteen hits - with six players collecting multiple hits.

The early innings saw a tight pitching duel between the Manly starter and Marlins’ Craig Anderson.

Anderson hurled three scoreless innings, striking out two, before the Marlins piled on the runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning.

Mick Ashton - who had three hits on the night - Moco Moanaroa, Tom O’Gorman, Damian Rutherford, Michael Campbell and Todd Bowden all hit safely in the inning, with the Marlins scoring 7 runs.

The scoring continued in the 4th and 5th innings for

the Marlins, taking the lead out to 9-0.

In the meantime, the Marlins relief pitchers had taken over, as Paul Anderson, Aidan Francis and Kurt Eden combined to

throw fi ve innings for just the one run.

The large home crowd was treated to some great defensive plays, in particular by 17 year old Marlins short stop Danny Smith.

the Canterbury Vikings, 10-6, in the Sydney Major League contest at Chipping Norton on Sunday October 30.

The Marlins offense exploded for a team total of fi fteen hits, with Tim Joughin the standout, collecting four.

Canterbury were the fi rst to score, plating a run in the bottom of the 2nd inning off Marlins starting pitcher Paul

Anderson. Marlins replied

immediately though, scoring three runs of their own in the top of the 3rd inning and further went ahead to a 6-1 lead in the top of the 4th inning, after consecutive hits to Kurt Eden, Josh Brierley, Joughin and Michael Campbell.

Marlins’ Anderson had settled into his pitching duties by now and it was only a single run being scored with 2 outs in the bottom of the 6th that

brought Canterbury back to 6-2 down.

Anderson completed 7 innings of work, allowing just the two runs whilst striking out fi ve Vikings batters along the way.

Then in the top of the 8th inning, Central Coast broke the game wide open, plating four runs - three scoring off a Joughin double - to take a 10-2 lead.

Relief pitcher Geoff Brotherton came on to close the game out, throwing the remaining two innings.

around the Central Coast took part in a 5-a-side football clinic held at Wadalba Sports Complex, Kanwal.

Students from St Mary’s, Toukley, Wadalba Community School, Wyong Creek Public School, Tuggerawong Public School, Jilliby Public School, North Lakes Public School and Blue Haven Public

School participated in the day, practising their skills in a relaxed and supportive environment.

Since 5-a-side was launched in 2009, over 25,000 children have been involved in the full day program incorporating numerous drills and skills.

Administered by Football Federation Australia (FFA), 5-a-side aims to provide an extra avenue for players to enjoy the round ball game.

At the end of the event, each child received a

show bag packed full of information, courtesy of Cottee’s.

A school attending a 5-a-side plays a minimum of fi ve games in a round robin format.

The simplifi ed rules make the main focus of the day all about participation and enjoyment.

This ensures that boys and girls of any ability are able to be included in teams and able to enjoy a day of football.

Holger Osieck and Qantas Australian U23s Head Coach Aurelio Vidmar have selected fi ve Central Coast Mariners players for a joint two-day training camp in Sydney.

2010/11 Mariners’ medallist Joshua Rose, as well as Rostyn Griffi ths, Mathew Ryan, Brad McDonald and Sam

Gallagher joined another 26 players from rival Hyundai A-League clubs at the camp in a bid to impress the National Team selectors.

Rose, Griffi ths, Ryan, McDonald and Gallagher linked up with their peers in Sydney following the F3 Derby clash with Newcastle Jets at Ausgrid Stadium.

The purpose of the camp is for both Osieck and Vidmar to have a fi rsthand look at players who have the potential to play for the Qantas Socceroos and

Qantas Australian U23s in the future.

In a similar vein to the training camp that was held in Germany earlier this year, Osieck was excited about the prospect of working with Australian-based players who may be in line for future selection as part of the Qantas Socceroos.

“The main aim of this camp is to have a closer look at the players that we have been monitoring from within the Hyundai A-League,” Osieck said.

“It is important for us to have a personal look at these players to see if they are potential candidates to join the Qantas Socceroos for our qualifi cation campaign.

“With such a long campaign, we are always looking for more depth to our squad and it’s logical to see if these players from the Hyundai A-League can provide that depth.

“We held a similar camp in Duisburg earlier this year which was very benefi cial and we will be looking to

have similar camps in the future,” he said.

With the next AFC Asian Qualifi ers for the 2012 London Olympic Games against Iraq and Uzbekistan in late November, Aurelio Vidmar will also be using this opportunity to assess potential additions to his squad.

“We have added a number of players in this camp who are eligible for the Olympic qualifi ers that have not been involved in our campaign so far.

“This camp is a good opportunity for us to work with those players to see if they can offer anything different to the current group of players,” Vidmar said.

The Qantas Australian U23s will travel to Qatar in November to face Iraq in the third round of the 2012 London Olympic Games Asian Qualifi ers on the 23rd November.

They will then travel back to Australia to face Uzbekistan four days later at Parramatta Stadium.

was the difference between Manly Vale and Gosford in a tight and highly contested fi nal in the Champion of Champions competition held at NSW Football headquarters at Parklea.

Manly Vale has managed to spoil Gosford Womens Premier League girls in their undefeated run by taking out the silverware with a one nil win.

According to coach Mark Yule, it was another tough game played in hot and humid conditions, where the Gosford girls struggled to maintain consistency with controlled possession and the tempo of the game.

Gosford had the early running and could have taken the lead in the 14th minute, after Peta O’Loughlin’s initial shot was parried by Manly Vales keeper Suerry Hodues and Annika Van Lierop put wide a rebound 6 yards out.

Gosford’s Nat Dawson drew the best from Hodues on 33 minutes with her turn and shoot attempt, which was

from midfi elders Jo Greco and Amanda Thompson who were valiant in tracking back from midfi eld and defending Gosford’s attack.

The fi rst half saw Gosford generally create the better opportunities, with the Manly Vale keeper having to make several desperate saves after some good build up play.

Although Manly failed to create any clear shots on goal in the period, they were frequently able to create pressure on Gosford’s defence forcing more than their fair share of corners, this being a key tactical element in their game.

At the break, scores were locked scoreless and Gosford’s rotation of players to maintain energy levels had become a big factor, as had conceding corners.

The second forty fi ve minutes continued much the same as fi rst, with an arm wrestle mainly played out in midfi eld and few chances created.

Ange Beattie had the best of them in the 60th minute, when she managed to get on the end of a through ball and squeeze off a strong shot

that could only fi nd the side netting.

It was not until the 75th minute, as energy levels continued to wane, Gosford conceded yet another corner where they struggled to clear effectively and with the ball bobbing around in the 18 yard box it was Manly Vale’s Striker Eliza Ashcroft, who managed to toe poke the ball into the top right corner of Gosford’s net giving Gosford’s keeper Catherine Thuaux no chance.

During the dying minutes of the game, Gosford continued to give it everything, with Megan Sullivan creating a lot of pressure on the Manly Vale defense; however, Manly held on strongly to eventually take the win and the title, for the fi rst time in their history in any grade.

“I was very proud of the team’s effort and particularly their commitment over the season to make the fi nal of Champion of Champions,” said Gosford coach Mark Yule.

“We have won 24 games in succession through 2011 to make it that far and be runners up in the state after a game that could have gone either way, is no small achievement.”

Central Coast Mariners have

been defeated 1-nil by Newcastle Jets in round 3 of the Hyundai A-League played at Ausgrid Stadium, Broadmeadow on Sunday October 23.

Jeremy Brockie’s 25th minute strike for the Jets was all that separated the two sides, with the home team enjoying the better of the play in the opening stanza while the Mariners responded with a more purposeful effort in the second 45.

Mariners Head Coach Graham Arnold was understandably disappointed with the outcome of the match, however stressed that his team needed to keep focused on the “big picture” that is the 2011/12 Hyundai A-League season.

“We didn’t turn up at the start of the game, but you make your own luck and that starts with a lot of hard work on the training fi eld,” Arnold said.

“Tomorrow, we’ll do recovery, Tuesday is off and we’ll start again Wednesday.”

“In the second half, I thought we created enough chances to win it.”

Despite the expectation leading into the F3 Derby, the game began at a relatively insipid pace.

Michael McGlinchey’s strong 7th minute strike was the fi rst and only real action of the opening 15 minutes of play.

On 18 minutes, the Jets

found space and broke purposefully through Labinot Haliti. Haliti hit a low drive at Mariners shot stopper Mathew Ryan, with the 19-year-old responding sharply to block the ball away.

Just fi ve minutes later, the Mariners had one of their best chances of the opening stanza.

A curling free kick from Oliver Bozanic sent Ben Kennedy sprawling to his right, with the Newcastle custodian just able to palm the accurate in-swinger to safety.

Two minutes later, the Jets would take the lead.

Picking up the ball in the fi nal third, Brockie showed good ability to weave his way through the Mariners defence before sending a precise chip into the back of the net.

On 34 minutes, the Yellow and Navy almost had the equaliser their travelling support craved.

Tarek Elrich’s error inside the box fell to Daniel McBreen, whose shot on the turn just whisked past Kennedy’s left post.

Shortly after the interval, Arnold opted to introduce Bernie Ibini to the game and the attackers pace visibly lifted the Mariners side.

Indeed, it was Ibini who helped spark a number of Mariners chances in the second stanza, with McBreen, Matt Simon and the 2011 Qantas Young Socceroo himself all testing the Newcastle number one as the clock wound down.

Arnold reserved special praise for the speedy youngster.

“Bernie did exceptionally well when he came on,” he said.

“Today we got a good 45 minutes out of him.”

Unfortunately for Central Coast, however, their vastly improved second half performance was not being rewarded with an equaliser at Ausgrid Stadium.

Mariners suffer narrow defeat

Central Coast Mariners have

thrown their support behind CanTeen’s National Bandanna Day initiative, held on October 28.

CanTeen is the Australian organisation for young people living with cancer.

The Mariners supported National Bandanna Day in a variety of ways, including a player appearance at Erina Fair on Thursday 27 October.

Four Mariners stars – Qantas Australian U23s captain Oliver Bozanic, New Zealand international Michael McGlinchey, Qantas Young Socceroo Trent Sainsbury and Mariners’ all time top goal-scorer Adam Kwasnik – sold bandannas at Erina Fair Shopping Centre.

Canteen Division Manager, Simon Cavaliere, said his organisation was thrilled with the Mariners’ help in promoting the cause.

“It is fantastic to see the most loved team on the Central Coast showing solidarity to donate time to support this great cause,” Mr Cavaliere said.

“The Hunter and Northern NSW Division of CanTeen supports over 100 young people from the Central Coast, including cancer patients, siblings of cancer patients and young people with a parent or primary care giver suffering from cancer,”

he said.Additionally, the Mariners

sported bandannas at the end of today’s training session, with key local media on hand to fi lm and photograph players, coaching and support staff in the distinctive yellow bandannas.

Mariners’ Head Coach Graham Arnold said: “With players under the age of 24 making up a signifi cant percentage of our team, we are happy to donate our time supporting this great cause.”

Moreover, the club has connected with the Yellow Army Supporter Group, providing 30 individually signed, yellow bandannas for Yellow Army to sell among the Bluetongue Stadium crowd this Saturday night.

Yellow Army spokesperson, Simon Fisher, said this was a benefi cial way to add colour to the crowd, offer a unique

piece of memorabilia to Mariners supporters and, most importantly, raise funds for the CanTeen cause.

“All the money we raise by selling the bandannas on Saturday night will be donated back to CanTeen via the Central Coast Mariners,” Fisher said.

Yellow Army will be selling the bandannas at the base of Bay 16 from 4pm on Saturday.

The additional colour will undoubtedly help boost the Yellow Army’s distinctive appearance and also create further awareness of the CanTeen cause.

In 2011, CanTeen will provide three overnight programs on the Central Coast and numerous recreational events, giving local members a chance to escape their daily cancer experience, build relationships, share knowledge and have some fun.

The Central Coast Mariners

overcame a resolute Perth Glory 2-1 in their Hyundai A-League Week 4 clash at Bluetongue Stadium on Saturday, October 29, after two powerful fi nishes from strikers Matt Simon and Bernie Ibini.

In sweltering conditions, the home side clawed their way from behind to record their fi rst victory this campaign.

Graham Arnold rang in the changes for the game, going into the match with the knowledge that a much-improved performance was needed to erase the frustration of a last-up loss to bitter rivals Newcastle Jets.

Bernie Ibini was handed his fi rst start for the club, Daniel McBreen shifted to the point of the diamond, while both Mustafa Amini and Alex Wilkinson came through the week’s training sessions unscathed to take their place in the match day squad for the fi rst time this term.

The match started brightly enough for the home side with an early touch from Ibini putting Matt Simon through a gap in the Perth defence.

Unfortunately for the hosts, Simon was a fraction offside as the ball was played.

It takes time for a new partnership to form between strikers, but it was a positive start.

Just as it seemed that the Mariners would begin to attack freely, the visitors stole momentum with an early opening goal.

Scott Neville delivered a fl ighted cross and the Mariners’ defenders committed the cardinal sin of not tracking a drifting runner.

Travis Dodd made them pay for the mistake, as he casually turned a glancing header past a stranded Mathew Ryan to open his account for his new club in the sixth minute.

Stunned and frustrated by conceding an early goal, the Mariners’ tried everything within their power to try and get back into the match.

The visitors have never won at Bluetongue Stadium and were clearly bent on ending that streak.

Rather than dropping

players behind the ball after scoring an early goal on the road, the Glory took the game to the Yellow and Navy and really didn’t give them a chance to get any sort of rhythm going.

Perth had a chance to double their lead in the 15th minute when Billy Mehmet’s strike cannoned off the post.

It was a warning to the home side that the visitors from the West Australian capital were here to continue their positive start to the season.

Shane Smeltz could have infl icted more pain on the Mariners’ and capitalised on what was a lopsided possession count, but Ryan was more than up to the task as he palmed the stinging shot away.

Ryan’s efforts and Ibini’s ability to bring the crowd to their feet every time he touched the ball fi nally seemed to awaken the hosts from their slumber.

Buoyed by the enthusiasm of their teenage teammates, it was the efforts of three senior players who contributed to the equaliser.

McBreen playing in midfi eld showed his true class with some delightful touches and energetic defence in the torrid opening quarter of the match, but it was his pass to Pedj Bojic that created the team’s fi rst goal.

As the Mariners slowly clawed their way back into the contest, Bojic and Rose began to push forward on the type of runs that made them two of the more dynamic wingbacks in the competition.

In the 27th minute Bojic timed his cross to Simon with precision and the 2010/11 Mariners’ Golden Boot Winner controlled the ball perfectly with his left foot, teeing the ball up for his right foot to slot the ball home.

It was sublime play from the marksman and

the relief of opening his account for the campaign was clearly evident.

Now back on level terms, the Mariners’ were beginning to play the free-fl owing style of football that the Bluetongue faithful know they are capable of.

Shortly after the half hour mark, Oliver Bozanic tested current Glory custodian and former Mariners’ shot-stopper Danny Vukovic with a long range effort.

The Qantas U23s Australian captain and Avoca Beach junior copped a hard knock to his ankle for his troubles, as Glory defender Seb Van Den Brink closed in.

With the shadows of halftime looming over Bluetongue, there was a sense that something was about to happen.

After dominating the match for the majority of the half, the visitors were getting frustrated that they had let the Mariners back into the match.

In stoppage time, they allowed Rostyn Griffi ths to make a long break through the heart of their defence.

For a split second, it had seemed that the midfi elder had delayed his pass to Simon for too long.

Using his striker’s instinct, Simon cut-back inside and unleashed a curling shot towards Vukovic’s goal, but the Perth shot-stopper pulled off a stunning save to deny Simon his second of the match.

Vukovic may have stopped Simon from scoring, but he and his defenders had not reckoned on there being a second threat there, ready to pounce on any opportunity.

Bernie Ibini, in his fi rst senior start, had ghosted in for just such a chance and when the ball bounced towards him off the palm of Vukovic he had no hesitation.

The Qantas Young Socceroos’ striker powered his shot into the back of the net with such velocity that the ball thundered back out.

Ibini celebrated leaping high into the dusk sky and the Mariners had taken an unlikely lead.

It was a lead that they would never relinquish.

The fi rst half battle seemed to have taken the sting out of both side’s attack, as both were content to try and control possession and territory in the second half.

The Mariners were looking more composed than they have previously and their midfi eld began to string passes together.

Captain Wilkinson may have been short of a gallop, but he and the experienced Zwaanswijk calmly played the ball out from the back to begin most of the home side’s attacking raids.

There were no real clear-cut chances in the fi rst fi fteen minutes of the second half, but the Mariners did fashion several half chances from the boot of Ibini.

In the fi rst instance, the youngster dragged his shot wide of the near post, before a fl ying Scott Neville challenge stopped him in his tracks minutes later as he looked to beat the Glory cover defence.

It was an impressive starting debut from Ibini, with plenty of encouraging signs for the future.

Mindful of not over-exerting his young charge, Arnold substituted him shortly afterwards to a standing ovation from the Bluetongue faithful, as another member of the club’s impressive roster of youth took his place on the pitch.

The famous afro may have been trimmed, but Mustafa Amini showed that he still had an ability to time a pass in a 25 minute cameo.

Perth should have had an equaliser in the 73rd minute; in fact, it was probably the best chance of the match.

Liam Miller delivered a pass to Adam Hughes, who skewed his resulting shot wide with the goal at his mercy.

The home side can consider themselves fortunate that the ball didn’t go one player further wide, as it is doubtful that Smeltz would have missed such a golden chance.

Keen to captalise on their good fortune, the Mariners continued to push forward in search of an elusive goal to close out the match.

They couldn’t manufacture a chance, but by then, it didn’t matter; the target was simply to get the three points.

To their credit, Perth threw everything at the home side in a tough fi nal few minutes of stoppage time.

Even Danny Vukovic travelled the length of the fi eld to get involved in one last desperate attack.

For a brief moment, the Mariners must have had visions of shooting a 50 metre screamer from the half-way line to end the match, but the players who had fought hard to come from behind didn’t want to the give the visitors easy ball and thought better of it.

The home side managed to hang on for a very valuable victory.

After the match, Mariners coach Graham Arnold said it was vital his players won their individual battles against the Glory.

“We had to win the battle fi rst and foremost, so I challenged the boys before the game for seven or eight of us to win our battles and then I thought our football ability would take over,” he said.

“When you’re scrapping for points, you’ve got to get in their face and I think we

did that. “We should, that we

wouldn’t be intimidated by them and physically, we won most of our battles, so it was good.”

Despite the win, Arnold reiterated that his side would need to take their game to another level to compete with the competition’s heavyweights.

“We’ve still got to do better and we can do better,” he said.

Munmorah Ladies recently attended Veterans Day at The Green’s at the Entrance where two of representatives were presented with a potted begonia to celebrate one being the oldest veteran there and the other the youngest.

These ladies were Ivy Miller (oldest) and Robyn Pierce(the youngest).

Ivy has just turned 96 and still puts an occasional bowl down.

A friendly game of bowls was a great way to start proceedings with Doyalson President Mark O’Sullivan as skip on one rink leading his team of Graeme Reed (3rd), Norm Radford (2nd) and Pat Lysaught (L) against the composite team of Doug Rose (skip) representing Royal, Jim Turner (3rd) on loan from Doyalson, Bob Bourke (2nd) Zone 15 Vice-President & Publicity Offi cer and Alan Pollock (L) also representing Royal.

Despite a lot of good

natured “stirring” and “tom foolery”, we somehow managed to get through 21 ends of most enjoyable bowls in company with some of the friendliest bowlers you will fi nd anywhere.

All credit must go to Alan Pollock for playing the full 21 ends since coming back to bowls from a four month absence due to a broken arm.

After the game, a roast dinner was served in the club’s Wentworth room and various awards presented by Doug Rose, Mark O’Sullivan, Don Bridges (Zone 15 Vice-President) and Bob Bourke to 2011 Triples Champions Greg Bulmer, Wayne Lloyd and Jim Turner with runners-up Carl Dawson, Pat Lysaught and Mark O’Sullivan, 2011 Pairs Champions John Kochel and Wayne Lloyd with runners-up

A name bar was presented to hard working club member Grahame Breed V.P. and a ladies brooch was presented to another hard worker Maureen Turner.

An example of the friendliness of this club was demonstrated when two passing bowlers, Barry Gibson and Jack Lundberg, from North Ryde RSL Bowling Club dropped in to see if they could get a game and club President Mark said, “even though this is Presentation Day and not normal social bowls, I don’t like to turn anyone away, so we will fi t you in.”

Aron Sherriff left the best to last

and capped off a full-on week of bowls at the NSW State C h a m p i o n s h i p s at Soldiers Point by winning the prestigious blue ribbon Singles titles from Eric Johannes (Zone 16) of Oaks Flat 31-23.

It was a marathon week of bowls for Sherriff, who was the only player to contest all four disciplines of Fours, Triples, Pairs and Singles played over eight days.

The only event he failed to reach the fi nal in was the Fours.

Teamed with Harley McDonald, Lee Trethowan and John Roberts in the Fours, they were beaten in the second round by the Roselands combination of Ashley Mitchell, Alex Lee, Cameron Curtis and Carl Healey, who went on to take out the title.

In the Triples, Harley Mc Donald, John Roberts and Aron Sherriff combined well to reach the fi nal for a rematch against the Roselands team of Alex Lee, Cameron Curtis and Carl Healey who had brought them undone in the Fours.

They were a strong combination and Cameron

Curtis, Aron Sherriff’s former Australian Team Coach took great delight in showing his ex pupil he hadn’t lost his touch in capturing their second consecutive championship title 26-17.

In the Pairs, Aron Sherriff teamed with Tony Laguzza and some would say they played their fi nal in the second round against the Raymond Terrace pair of Jamie Lee and Clay Parker.

In strong blustering winds and a green that was playing tricks on both hands, they trailed 10-1 and had to play catch up for the rest of the

game. They went into the last

end trailing 18-17, but a heart stopping two shots was enough to snare victory 19 -18.

Having got out of goal, there was an air of expectation amongst the Ettalong supporters that this was going to be their title.

They progressed to the fi nal against the Cabramatta pair of Michael Clarke and former international David Holt who had played a marathon semi-fi nal against Ballina to also win on the last end.

The fi nal was a great contest between two Internationals who went head to head for most of the game, with Holt constantly saving and converting.

The Cabramatta pair wore down the Ettalong boys and skipped away over the closing ends to capture the title 19 -10.

For Aron Sherriff, the Singles’ title was something special and he was determined to fi nish the week on a high note.

He took to the task in awesome style, dispatching North Sydney’s Kenta Treacher (Zone 9) 31-12 in the fi rst round in just on an hour and Merryland’s Zel Trbara (Zone 10) 31-24 in the quarter fi nal.

He then accounted for the 2010 NSW Singles Champion and Bowler of the

Year Alexandria Erskenville’s Ray Pearse (Zone 11) 31-13 with an outstanding display of precision draw bowling in the semi-fi nal.

Aron was in top form and led Oaks Flat Eric Johannes (Zone 16) 17- 4 in the fi nal and it looked like another early fi nish.

To Eric’s credit, he fought back strongly to win a number of ends on end to get within reach at 27 – 23, but Sherriff closed the gate with a match winning four for game, set and title.

It was an outstanding week of bowls, with Sherriff playing in 12 of the 14

games and playing-off in three of the four fi nals.

Good spectator crowds were in attendance throughout the week and an appreciative group of Ettalong supporters were always on hand to share in their local champion’s success.

The Central Coast Over 60s cricket

team has just returned from the annual Tamworth Carnival, a warm-up for the National Competitions to be held in Armidale from November 20.

The ‘boys’ played against teams from Tamworth, Quirindi, Sydney and Hastings.

Although the team only won one match, fi ne individual performances from Central Coast members were: Bill Moffatt with 32 and 30 runs, Gordon Ives with 26 and 30 runs, John Pymm

with 28 and Jack Woodger took 5 wickets for 19.

Final preparations for the Nationals took place on October 26 against Southern Highlands at Mittagong.

Best Central Coast efforts in that rain-shortened game came from Howard Reay 27, Bob Tranter 22 and skipper Gordon Ives who took 3/13.

Round 3 of the Central

Coast Divisional Competition fi nished on October 29, with some sensational i n d i v i d u a l p e r f o r m a n c e s backing up a number of good all-round team efforts.

In the fi rst week of the round, Simon Blake from Mountains gave his old club-mates at Umina a torrid time as he blazed his way to 165, leading his team to 7/372.

In reply, Umina avoided the outright with some solid 2nd innings batting, and despite Chris Johnston’s match fi gures of 9/96.

At Baker Park, Wyong, Dave Eddy (80) and Tim Boyd (47) put on a 100 run partnership for the 8th wicket, which helped Woy Woy get to 263.

Wyong batted for 25 overs on the fi rst day, going into the week’s break at 3/73.

The not out batsmen Tony Cornwall and Kris Clouten returned on day 2 determined to get the required runs, but Tim Boyd (6/44) and Dave Eddy (3/44) saw Wyong bowled out for 130.

The Entrance batted fi rst at Erina oval against Kincumber, and thanks to tight bowling from Mark Robertson (3/47) and Jamie Rowe (2/45) and with 3 run outs, were dismissed for 144.

Kincumber ended day one having secured fi rst innings points, and with 5 wickets in hand and a lead of 7, set about trying to secure the outright victory.

After being dismissed for 188, Kincumber tried to put pressure on The Entrance, but the Seagulls responded with 170 and the game ended with a fi rst innings win to Kincumber.

After bowling Lisarow out for 212 and being 1/41 overnight, Terrigal gave themselves a great chance of knocking over the defending champions at Sohier Park.

Alex Patterson continued his fi ne form with bowling fi gures of 5/56, while Lisarow captain Darren Bates maintained his form with 70.

Unfortunately an error, in the use of the sprinkler system on Friday meant the wicket was fl ooded and unplayable on the second day leaving the result a disappointing draw.

Andy Ryan of Narara led from the front with 4/26 as his team dismissed Toukley for 87.

Toukley captain Dave Molan responded by taking 5 wickets as Narara reached 202 and the Lions started day two at 0/9 chasing outright points.

A sensational batting performance from Troy Marchant (108 n.o.) and Dane Hokin (72 n.o.) saw Narara declare their second innings at 1/203.

Toukley fought hard but were dismissed in the dying overs for 133, giving Narara an outright victory.

In Division 1, Doyalson belted Gosford’s bowlers around Fagans Park to declare at 7/457.

Chistian West fi nished with 186, and then Doyalson had Gosford reeling at 4/23 at the end of day 1.

On the second day, it didn’t take long for Gosford to be dismissed for 97, but they put up stiff resistance in their second innings to fi nish on 7/205, thanks to 94 not out from Andrew Irving.

The other highlight of division 1 games was Blake Iddles of Lisarow’s 175 against Terrigal.

In the Suburban One Day Limited Over (ODLO) Grade 1 competition, Round 3, Terrigal scored 344 off their 40 overs, then bowled Toukley out in 28 overs for 166.

Matthew Bates of Terrigal came in at 1st wicket down and scored 168 not out.

Jason McKay took 5 Toukley wickets for 32 off his allowed 8 overs.

In other ODLO Grade 1 Round 3 games, there were victories for Wyong, The Entrance and Woy Woy.

In Round 4, the highlights were 139 for Matthew Day of Terrigal and 102 to Brad Deitz of Woy Woy with victories to Kincumber, Narara, The Entrance and Woy Woy.

Federation (CCSF) is delighted to announce that they are holding their annual awards night at Mingara Recreation Club on November 19 to recognise the outstanding

a c h i e v e m e n t s of Central Coast athletes, coaches, teams and administrators.

The awards acknowledge people who have succeeded on various levels ranging from International achievements right through to local level.

Last year, CCSF held the same event at Mingara with enormous success.

Awards were handed out to the following people and associations for their contributions to sport on the Central Coast: Paul Stone was awarded the Communities NSW Sport and Recreation Coach of the Year for Surf Life Saving; Central Coast Junior Rugby League took out the Dewars Cabinets Club/Association of the Year award; Surf

Life Saver Paul Lemmon was awarded the Mingara One Master Sportsperson of the Year; Central Coast Volunteer of the Year was Gary Kavanagh for his exceptional contributions to cricket; Golfer Steve Robson won the Life Without Barriers Sportsperson with a Disability Award; and volunteers Colin Laing, William Hammond and Alan Pollock were all

recognised for their ongoing contributions to sport on the Central Coast.

The event promises to be fun and rewarding for all and if nothing else, it will at least show the athletes, coaches and administrators that their hard work has not gone un-recognised.

Steve Allan, from 2GO’s The Locker Room, will host the Awards and all are

encouraged to come along to Mingara Recreation Club and celebrate with our local sporting stars.

This year, the federation received a record number of nominations, with many exceptional athletes and contributions to sport to be recognised and rewarded.

Kincumber Colts Junior Rugby

League won an impressive 6 awards at the Central Coast Division of Junior Rugby League presentation night.

Kincumber was named the “Most Successful Club” for 2011.

This was achieved with 12 from 17 competitive sides making the semi fi nals, 7 of those then made the Grand Final and 3 were victorious.

The other 4 side lost in narrow defeats.

Kincumber 11/1 side also won Best Defensive Record Mod Football and Best Attacking Record Mod

Football. The 12/2 won Best

Defensive Team Mod football 2nd or 3rd division.

The 13/1 side won Most Improved Side and Connor Watson won Best Back in the Under 15 Rep side.

Club president Scott Jackson said, “Hopefully the foundations that have been laid in the past few years will continue to reap benefi ts for the local kids.

“I would like to thank the hard working dedicated committee and volunteers in our club, the Colts truly have a great club spirit and are a club that I am honoured to be a part of.”

Kincumber Colts JRLFC started the year with an

increase in players number, due in part to their off season marketing.

A marketing pamphlet was letterbox dropped throughout the area and they attended some local fairs and markets to help increase the profi le of Rugby League on the coast.

Armed with stats from Sports Medicine Australia that shows Rugby League is one of the safest sports from an injury point of view, the Colts took to the streets to show Mum’s and Dad’s that their kids would be safe as well as have fun and make lifelong friendships.

The results speak for themselves.

Kincumber named most successful club

The end has come to yet another

footy year for the 258 registered Woy Woy Junior Roosters with our Club Presentation Day being held at Woy Woy Leagues Club Sunday October 16, with Mini and Mod early in the day and the International players and coaching staff enjoying dinner later in the afternoon.

Sunday’s presentation was preceded by a number of the Juniors committee and supporters attending the Sportsman’s Dinner held on Saturday night at the Club with guest speakers Daryll Brohman and Laurie Daley.

This was organised by the Seniors who graciously allowed some framed signed jerseys that had been donated to the Juniors, to be auctioned off.

One in particular; a signed St George Illawarra 2010 Premiership winning jersey, kindly donated by Lachlan Kirk, 10/1’s coach, sold for $1000.

In the 2011 season, the

Roosters fi elded 19 teams in total, eight Mini teams, one U6, three U7s, two U8s and two U9s.

In the competitive competitions, we had a team in each age group; in 1st division 10/1’s, 11/1’s, 12/1’s, 13/1’s, 14/1’s, 15/1’s and 16/1’s, there were two teams in 2nd division the 11/2’s and 14/2’s, as well as two teams in the 3rd division the 10/3’s and 12/3’s.

The 12/1’s and 14/1’s both fi nished in the top 4 and our 10/1’s were unlucky, missing out on a semi fi nal spot after fi nishing in equal 4th position on points for and against.

Both the 12/1’s and 14/’s made it through the semis and into the fi nals, the 12/1’s being beaten and fi nishing 3rd and the 14/1’s making it through to the grand fi nal where they were beaten on the day by Toukley.

Other highlights included: retaining the Joey Johns Wombat Shield after travelling up to Cessnock to play against the Goannas in the annual trial match; the inaugural “Rite of Passage” evening held for all International players; the 2 State of Origin Nights held at the Leagues Club which

had a good following; the continued success of the Rooster Round-Ups; the Trivia / Karaoke night; our Development Day attended by over 150 children from across the coast; Scott Jones being named in the top 10 nominations for CRL Volunteer of the year; the number of players reaching 100 games; including two players Aaron Redhead 15/1’s and Luke Moore 12/1’s reaching 150 games, Luke being the youngest player on record for Woy Woy to do so.

More highlights included: the success of the Grand Final canteen at Morrie; the number of players selected in the train on squads for the Division Rep teams; selection of former Rooster Akuila Uate in the N.S.W State of Origin team as well as the 24 man Kangaroo Squad for the Tri Nations Series; the Presentation Day held at Woy Woy Leagues Club and lastly but by no means the least, the effort put in by all the players and coaching staff at training and on game days and the standard of footy and sportsmanship displayed.

victorious over all clubs in the Central Coast Branch at the recent Mingara Pool Challenge, despite fi elding a decidedly youthful team.

Success was always a possibility, considering the team comprised of Indigo Verhoeven (U15), a recent selection and youngest member in the State Senior High Performance squad, Teigan Miller and Helen Krucler (Under 17) – selected in the Central Coast High Performance Squad.

Other team members were James Johnson and Claire Gaffney (Under 14) and Mick Magurran (Masters and Club Head Coach).

The fi ve youngsters are also medallists from the very successful team that competed at the recent NSW State Pool Rescue Championships.

The Pool Challenge comprised 8 individual and team events with an emphasis on participation

and enjoyment, but that still could not dampen the competitive drive of many attendees.

Most events involve either obstacles to swim under, or manikins (fi berglass ‘dummies’ fi lled with water) to “rescue”, tow with a rescue tube, or relay along the pool between members.

The Umina team members placed in the top 2 in their heats in 6 of the 8

events so a great result was always likely.

In the end, they triumphed over other powerhouse clubs from the Central Coast Branch such as Avoca and Terrigal.

The ongoing strong performances and results have been supported by recent sponsorship from Life Members Jan and Phill Harding and patrol captain and masters competitor

Paul Byrd, donating race fi ns specifi cally used in a nd benefi cial for, such competitions.

The Club is again not only proud of the team’s achievements but satisfi ed with its indication to members of the public the local beach is clearly patrolled by lifesavers with a demonstrable capability specifi cally in rescue scenarios.

NSW’s best surf sports

competitors battled it out for the title as NSW’s number one endurance athlete at the 2011 NSW Endurance Championships, held at Ocean Beach on Saturday, October 29.

Conditions were ideal for the Endurance Championships at Ocean Beach with a calm ocean and great weather throughout the event.

For many, this was the fi rst event of the season and provided athletes from all over NSW with a personal challenge as well as an opportunity to test their fi tness in their chosen discipline against the leading competitors in NSW from U15s to over 50s.

This year the Championships attracted a record number of participants with over 400

entries received. The event was well

supported by the master’s competitors and also attracted some of Australia’s leading ironman and women including Kellogg’s Nutri-grain competitors, Tom Atkinson, Trent Martin, Tara Coleman and Amy Nurthen.

“The event was a huge success, with excellent entry numbers and some very close competition across the board,” said SLSNSW Surf Sports Manager Chris Parker.

“It was amazing to see how close some of the races were over the extended endurance courses.”

Amy Nurthen (Terrigal) was victorious in the women’s Ironwoman event beating Tara Coleman (Maroubra) in a sprint to the fi nish while in the men’s Ironman event, Tom Atkinson (Queenscliff) started his year well winning the event ahead of Trent Martin (Avoca) in second place.

The Central Coast Academy of

Sport Speed Skating squad has continued their habit of creating headlines on the National speed skating circuit.

At the recent National championships, held for the fi rst time at the Melbourne Dockland’s IceHouse Skating Arena, Central Coast skaters turned in solid performances in the senior men’s competition, along with promising results in both the junior ladies and sub-junior men’s competitions.

The highlight of the senior men’s results was Noah Essaghir’s third placing overall, which included a time of 43.89sec for the 500m, the fastest time so far over the half-kilometer distance for the Australian season.

Nate Henry will return to the IceHouse arena in February after qualifying for the World Junior Championships.

It will be the fi rst time that an Australian venue hosts the prestigious event, where skaters from over thirty-fi ve countries will be competing for international gold medals.

Henry qualifi ed for

selection on the Australian team after he achieved sixth place in the senior men’s national competition, with personal best times in both the 500m and 1500m races.

Other notable performances from the senior men’s competition were Grant Hester (7th),

Joshua Raines (14th) and Luke Cullen (15th).

In the junior categories, Central Coast Academy of Sport skaters also featured well.

Sam Henry gained seventh place overall in his sub-junior men’s category, while Taryn Henry

was good enough to take out the overall Australian championship in the junior ladies competition.

The World Junior Championships will be held in Melbourne from February 24-26, 2012.

Four Central Coast residents have

received a total of $2500 in sponsorship from the Central Coast Regional Organisation of Councils (CCROC) to participate at both national and international sporting events.

A joint initiative of Gosford City and Wyong Shire Councils, CCROC provides sponsorship to residents who have been selected by a national, state or regional body to participate in a recognised sporting or cultural event.

In return for sponsorship, the recipients promote the Central Coast in the local, interstate and international arenas.

Jasmine Dillon of Ourimbah was awarded $250 to participate in the NSW Primary Schools Sports Association Touch Football National Championships to be held 23-28 October 2011 in Coffs Harbour.

Jasmine was selected for the NSW Team after exceptional performances during regional competition.

Terrigal resident Elyssia Gasparotto was awarded

$1000 and represented Australia in the U19 Australian Pool Rescue Team at the 2011 New Zealand Pool Rescue Championships held in New Zealand from October 25 - 31.

She had been selected for the Australian team based on outstanding performances throughout the 2010 and 2011 NSW State and Queensland State Pool Rescue Championships.

Jasmine Fischbeck of Mannering Park has received $250 to attend the 2011 National Gymnastics Club Championships be held in Canberra on 19 November 2011.

Jasmine qualifi ed after an outstanding all-round performance at the NSW Open Gymnastics Championships held at Homebush earlier this year.

Kincumber resident Jack Booker will receive $1000 to attend the NSW Country Junior Rugby Union U18 Tour which will be held in Spain from 24 November 2011.

Jack’s commendable performance at the Country Championships has seen him selected as captain of the team.

Umina has again triumphed at the

2011 Professionals Weekend of Surf for the fourth year in a row.

Umina placed with 420 points, Shelly Beach 231 points and Terrigal 182 points.

There were over 40 Clubs competing on the weekend with 202 competitors for Saturdays Ironman Event and 330 competitors for Sunday.

Saturday saw a tough Iron person course set to test all competitors in this early season hit out.

Competition was fi erce in age groups from U10 up to the Masters in the over 50s.

Umina had over 20 competitors compete in the Iron person event.

The water temperature was measured at a cool 16 degrees, which made the event even harder than normal.

Umina is very proud to say that all our competitors completed the course, nearly all fi nishing in the top ten.

Sunday was the Carnival Day, with the Umina team being made up of 50 competitors, ranging in ages from U10s to over 50s.

The rain pelted down and the cold wind blew all day to make conditions very diffi cult for all competitors.

Water temperature was once again “freezing”, but once again, Umina dominated in all age groups with Black, White and Blue caps seen all over the beach.

represented the

Central Coast at the NSW Primary Schools Sports

Association (PSSA) Touch Finals Day in Coffs Harbour on

October 31. In a competition that

started with 667 schools, Warnervale Public School made it into the fi nal 8 stage (Quarter Finals) of the Girls Knockout Competition.

To reach this stage, they defeated Kanwal PS, Wadalba PS, Budgewoi PS and Brooke Ave PS and were then subsequently named Central Coast Champions for 2011, the fi rst team from Warnervale PS to achieve so highly in a Knockout Competition.

All students in the team travelled with their parents to Coffs Harbour, looking forward to the experience of playing at BCU International Stadium.

Although they were defeated in both their games (Centaur PS 12-3 and Dubbo Sth PS 7-5), all the girls represented their school, families and the Central Coast with exemplary sportsmanship. All parents and teachers were extremely proud of their efforts.
