A brace from Daniel McBreen

on his return from suspension secured the Central Coast Mariners with three vital Hyundai A-League points against Western Sydney Wanderers on Sunday, January 6.

McBreen netted in the 41st minute and again deep into added time nearing the end of the contest to ensure Graham Arnold’s men consolidated their place atop the A-League standings with a 2-0 triumph.

Parramatta Stadium was packed with 16,387 vociferous fans for the early evening kick-off and the two teams didn’t disappoint the masses, putting on a superb show of attacking and enterprising football despite the hot conditions.

The fi rst 45 provided enthralling action for the strong crowd to savour, with the fi rst shot of the game coming from the boot of Jason Trifi ro.

Trifi ro was later sent off for picking up two yellow cards.

McBreen and Pedj Bojic both missed the target with diffi cult chances soon after before Japanese creative Shinji Ono nearly crafted an opportunity for Joey Gibbs with an incisive pass from the right side.

Ono’s delightful delivery just missed the onrushing Gibbs in the Mariners’ penalty box.

Wearing the captain’s

armband for the second match in a row, Michael McGlinchey was looking dangerous for the yellow and navy and the New Zealand international midfi elder nearly handed his team the lead in the 37th minute.

After breaking down the right, McGlinchey cracked a shot from the edge of the area centimetres past Ante Covic’s right post.

Just four minutes later, the competition’s top goal-getter, McBreen, fi red home his 11th goal of the campaign.

Combining intelligently with Adam Kwasnik, McBreen weaved his way through the Wanderers’ defence before sending a clinical fi nish beyond Covic.

Tony Popovic’s team returned from the sheds after the interval clearly motivated to prove themselves against the A-League’s top-placed team and, to their credit, the home side managed to make a number of forays into the Mariners’ fi nal third.

Ono went close just fi ve minutes after the restart, his ferocious effort from close range blocked away by the perfectly position Bojic on the goal line.

But the men from ‘Wanderland’ were reduced to 10 in the 54th minute when referee Chris Beath sent Trifi ro for an early bath following a dangerous foul on Nick Montgomery, making their task of overturning the one-goal defi cit a more

The game was beginning to stretch considerably with Wanderers hunting for an equaliser and Arnold’s team seeking to punish the red and blacks for sending too many men forward.

Despite creating a series of half chances to restore parity to the clash, Popovic’s men couldn’t manage to

Demolition of houses in Ocean Beach Rd, Umina, has been completed in preparation for the construction of a fast food store.

The work follows consent granted by Gosford Council in November.

Construction of the new McDonald’s outlet is expected to begin in February and the store is expected to be operational mid-year.

“Whilst the development was the focus of much debate, the Chamber is of the view that national operators such as McDonald’s will bring substantial benefi ts to the Umina Beach retail centre including the creation of over 100 part time and casual jobs for young people and the injection of over $1 million in wages into the local economy,” said Peninsula Chamber of Commerce president Mr Matthew Wales.

“With over 35 per cent youth unemployment, these jobs are vitally important for our local young people.

“The construction process will also see over $3 million worth of capital investment with Central Coast fi rms gaining contracts during the build program.

“It is important to note that over the last few years nearly 350 local jobs have been created with the upgrading of the Coles Supermarket, the construction of the new Woolworths, the completion of the Aldi Supermarket, the looming opening of Bunnings on the corner of South St and McDonalds.

“These anchor businesses create foot traffi c, attract shoppers and create opportunities for small retailers to feed off the growing popularity of the Umina Beach retail centre,” said Mr Wales.

The incidence of crime on the Peninsula has fallen over the last year, the Peninsula Chamber of Commerce has been told.

Police Superintendent Danny Sullivan spoke of local crime statistics at a chamber meeting late last year.

Chamber president Mr Matthew Wales said: “In a

refreshing exchange of views, the superintendent has said that crime statistics across the board have been lower over the last 12 months and that he is very pleased with his policing numbers.

“Like the Chamber, he has acknowledged that the CCTV cameras in our town centres have made a big difference in reducing anti-social behaviour

and graffiti and boosted security.“He has also given a

firm commitment to greater interaction between his office and the local business community so we are looking forward to seeing more of Superintendent Sullivan and his officers in the New Year,” said Mr Wales.

The notion was put to Council at the meeting of Tuesday, December 11, by mayor Cr Lawrie McKinna to investigate options to identify the waterway as an integral feature of the City of Gosford.

“During 2012, the Central Coast Regional Development Corporation (CCRDC) has been working

with the State Government to deliver Stage One of The Landing at the Gosford Waterfront as a catalyst project for the revitalisation of the Gosford City Centre,” said Cr McKinna.

“This landmark development will showcase Gosford to national and international visitors, developers and potential

investors. “The current name of

the body of water directly adjacent to The Landing and surrounding areas does not uniquely identify our region and confuses many visitors due to its perceived association with the City of Brisbane in Queensland,” added Cr McKinna.

Cr McKinna said any

name change for Brisbane Water would involve broad consultation with community groups and stakeholders.

“At this stage, Council is just investigating the feasibility of a name change and will be seeking input when we know what our options are, however, the scale and signifi cance of a development such as The Landing should clearly articulate the attributes of our wonderful city and help to easily identify our

region by its unique natural features,” said Cr McKinna.

Cr Gabby Bowles commended the mayor on his “guts” and said the issue had the potential “to open a massive can of worms”.

“I’d be really keen to have a look at a name that better refl ects who we are and what we are about,” said Cr Bowles.

Cr Craig Doyle said the fi rst time he read the report he “thought somebody was pulling my leg”.

“But the more I refl ected

on this, the more I think it will be an interesting exercise.”

Cr Deanna Bocking was the only councillor to oppose the mayoral minute and said she was concerned with where the name changes would stop and the costs of the whole exercise.

“Do we have to change the name of Brisbane Water National Park too?”

Land at Bushells Ridge has been identifi ed as the potential site, and Council endorsed a revised map for the Draft LEP, indicating this strategic future location, at its Ordinary Council Meetingheld on Wednesday, December 12.

The map will be displayed for public comment along with the Draft LEP.

“What this is about, at this stage, is simply the need to identify an ideal site for a future airport in the Shire,” said Wyong mayor Cr Doug Eaton.

“In my view, any

proposed airport is at least 10 years away, but it will certainly be a major boost to the area.

“As the Central Coast population approaches 400,000 there is enough local demand in our own region for an airport.

“Our residents shouldn’t be required to

travel by car for hours to get to an airport and every other major region in Australia has one.

“We are simply being disadvantaged by not having this asset.

“We are only talking about smaller planes going to destinations such as Melbourne and Brisbane and that in itself will be an enormous boost for local businesses,” said mayor Cr Eaton.

A type three regional airport is defi ned as a limited service airport, with a single runway of up to 2600 metres

in length.Cr Eaton said an

airport such as this would provide the Central Coast with a signifi cant economic boost.

“And, obviously for this to happen, there would need to be a signifi cant amount

of money spent on infrastructure including upgrading road and rail links,” said Cr Eaton.

“When you add it all up with the amount of jobs created, the economic benefi ts and improvements to local infrastructure, there are very few negatives.”

Academy of Sport’s (CCAS) Inaugural Triathlon Program Athletes headed to Queensland over the weekend of December 15 and 16 to compete in Triathlon Australia’s Junior National Series.

Mikayla Martin competed in the Youth Category (13-15 year olds) and Mitch and Matt Baker both competed in the Junior Category (U19s).

Mikayla and Mitch, who were both racing for the fi rst time, did well to fi nish mid-fi eld with both athletes having enjoyed the experience and atmosphere.

CCAS Coach Keiran Barry said, “I was really impressed with their efforts, and it was great to see them race”.

With the team for the Australian Youth Olympics Festival being decided over the weekend, 75 of Australia’s fi nest junior male triathletes vied for a place

in a series of six events, ranging from individual swim, bike and run races and a variety of triathlons over different distances.

Matt Baker performed well all weekend and fi nished in second place overall.

Following the races, Matt was named in Australia’s four-man team to compete at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival.

The Youth Olympics runs from January 16-20 in Sydney, and has athletes from all over the world competing in a variety of events.

Matt will compete in the Triathlon on Friday, January 18, at the Nepean Regatta Centre and will then race again in the mixed teams relay on the 19th.

After hearing the news

Baker said, “I’m very excited and proud of being chosen to represent Australia at such a major event”.

Barry will also have strong involvement at the Youth Olympics being named the Men’s Coach of the Triathlon Team.

CCAS programs manager Sammy Armstrong said, “It’s great to see how our athletes are developing under the guidance of coaches Keiran (Barry) and Nicole (Hackett), and with Triathlon’s growing popularity, the program can only get stronger in the coming years”.

The CCAS’s Triathlon Program is supported by Triathlon Australia, Triathlon NSW, Central Coast Triathlon Club and 2XU.

The Central Coast Marlins

Baseball Team edged a step closer to a top four spot on the State League ladder after an extra inning victory against Manly Eagles at Baseball Park, Springfi eld, on the weekend of December 15 and 16.

In a game that saw the lead change several times, the Marlins fi nally edged out the Sydney side in the 10th inning.

Both teams were on their game offensively with a total of 36 hits in the game.

The scoring started in the bottom of the fi rst with the Marlins scoring two runs after three back-to-back two out hits and a double from returning Blue Sox ABL Player Boss Moanaroa.

The visitors hit back straight away scoring two runs of their own in the top half of the second.

The Marlins extended their lead in the third inning after a two-run home run from Dan Smith gave the home side a 5-2 lead.

The Marlins had extended the lead in the fourth and

were leading 7-4.The visitors didn’t give up

as they took advantage of poor defence from the home side and took the lead for the fi rst time 8-7.

The Marlins hit straight back scoring two runs in the bottom half of the inning taking back the lead.

The Marlins found themselves needing a run in the ninth as the visitors had regained the lead 11-10.

The Marlins then scored this on a sacrifi ce fl y to Pat Maat which took the game into extra innings.

The Marlins made a crucial defensive play in the top half of the 10th inning giving them a chance to win it in the bottom half of the inning.

Dan Smith led off the inning with a hit and Michael Ashton walked.

After a successful bunt from Chris Ings the Marlins had loaded bases with no one out, giving them three chances to score the winning run.

Jason Rees came to the plate with one out and loaded bases to drive in the winning run.

Pat Maat was once again a standout with the bat collecting fi ve hits and a sacrifi ce fl y on the day.

The Central Coast Academy of Sport

BBX Basketball Program travelled to Wollongong on Friday, December 14, to kick off a three-day camp at the home of Illawarra Basketball, the renowned ‘Snakepit’.

The current NSW Country U16 Men’s coach John Hargreaves was the guest coach to help the program staff set the tone for the three days.

In his opening address, Hargreaves spoke about his refl ections regarding the fi ne line between what sets team’s apart at National Championships.

“When you consider that very fi ne line between winning and losing at nationals, it often comes down to the ability to play with consistent effort, so today we will work on ensuring we do everything we can to make everyone in this squad better players’ by challenging each and every

player,” said Hargreaves. The court session on the

Friday was one of the most comprehensive undertaken with the Academy of Sport since basketball started in the Academy in 2004.

“It was great for the squad to hear a new voice

with a great deal of technical knowledge.

“The fact the squad can get away and learn to cooperate both on and off the court is also an invaluable learning experience,” said Central Coast Academy of Sport head coach Drew

Fenton.“It was an additional

benefi t for the group to be able to watch an NBL game live to reinforce a lot of things that were covered today.

“The Wollongong versus Perth game was a nice way to fi nish a very busy but productive day.

“The Central Coast Academy of Sport has made a considerable investment in using state of the art motion analysis and the involvement of video capture and analysis in the program today was another highlight of the camp at Wollongong,” said Fenton.

Central Coast Academy of Sport managing director Mr Ian Robilliard said, “I was delighted to see the squad really put through their paces today”.

“They certainly enjoyed the challenge and the work they were instructed to do.

“John was outstanding and what a coup to have John involved in such an active way, it was just outstanding,” said Mr Robilliard.

Mariners midfi elder Anthony Caceres has put pen to paper on a new two-season contract with the Club, ensuring he will remain in the yellow and navy until the end of the 2014-15 Hyundai A-League season.

One of the Mariners’ brightest young stars, 20 year old Caceres progressed through Central Coast’s National Youth League system before signing his fi rst professional deal with the Club ahead of the Group Stage of the 2012 AFC Champions League.

After impressing in pre-season this year, Caceres suffered a freak elbow injury which hampered his prospects of featuring in the early part of the current A-League campaign.

However, after a string of standout displays in the National Youth League competition and consistent efforts in training, the midfi eld conductor has been rewarded with an extended deal with the Hyundai A-League table-toppers.

“I feel very privileged to be at a Club where they give young players an opportunity,” Caceres said.

“I’m surrounded by good people and I couldn’t be happier.”

Caceres added that despite his pre-season injury holding his progress back slightly, he felt he was close to his best and could make the transition from NYL star to Hyundai A-League regular.

“We’ve got a bunch of great players both technically and physically, and they’re just good blokes all round,” he said.

“I’ve taken a lot away from the pre-season and the

fi rst few rounds. “I’ve been working on my

fi tness a fair bit and hitting the gym, trying to put on some size.

“In time, I think I can step up to A-League level.”

Central Coast Mariners boss Graham Arnold said he was confi dent that Caceres would be gracing the Hyundai A-League stage soon.

The Mariners boss was excited by the potential of the former Marconi Stallions man, and said he believed he could develop into a key player for the Club.

“He’s a player of the future of the Club and he’s got a big part to play in what we will be about in the future,” Arnold said.

“He’s a wonderful kid and it’s great that we were able to sign him so quickly, especially with other Clubs hovering around.

“They (rival Clubs) watch the Youth League games

and he’s the best player in the Youth League every week.

“I think you will see him in our fi rst team by the end of the season.

“Hopefully, we’ll be announcing some more signings in the next couple of weeks as well,” he said.

Moreover, Central Coast Mariners chairman Mr Peter Turnbull welcomed the news that Caceres would remain a Mariner until 2015.

“Anthony Caceres had a promising start to the season hampered by injury, but is now back in full training and is showing his class daily,” Turnbull said.

“He deserves this longer contract, and we expect him to develop in the same way the Club has developed previous youngsters such as Danny Vukovic, Mustafa Amini, Mathew Ryan, Tom Rogic, Trent Sainsbury, Bernie Ibini, and Mitchell Duke.”

More Australians than ever

before are watching the Hyundai A-League, based on the key audience measurements at the half-way point of the current 2012-13 season.

A snap shot of the key metrics reveals;

Average TV audiences at an all-time high of 82,886, a 26% lift on last season, average attendances at 12,925, a 23% jump on last season, club memberships at an all-time high of 70,000, a 12% rise on last season, digital audiences on the FFA network at an all-time high peak of 800,000 unique browsers per month, a 46% increase on last season and a social media community in FFA channels of 350,000, a 28% expansion on last season.

Football Federation Australia (FFA) CEO Mr David Gallop said the audience growth showed how the Hyundai A-League was now ingrained in Australia’s sporting landscape.

“Whether it’s on TV, online or at our venues, more Australians are engaged with the Hyundai A-League than any time in the competition’s eight-year history,” said Gallop.

“This growth story is a tribute to the 10 Hyundai A-League clubs, to the players and coaches who produce such entertaining football and especially to the Club Members and fans.

“The unique atmosphere at Hyundai A-League matches created by the passionate and committed fans sets the game apart

from all the other codes and the very powerful ‘We Are Football’ campaign has really captured the mood that the A-League’s time has come.”

Other major highlights from the fi rst half of the Hyundai 2012/13 season include;

The highest ever crowd aggregate for a Hyundai A-League regular season round of 93,500 in the opening round, the highest ever average TV audience of 164,376 the round two match between Sydney FC and Newcastle Jets, 20 matches so far this season that have averaged over 100,000 viewers, an all-time high, a record crowd for the Melbourne derby of 42,032 in round one and a record Sydney FC regular season home crowd of 35,419 in round two.

“Naturally, we are delighted with the strong audience growth this season because we are very confi dent that people who sample the Hyundai A-League will want to come back for more,” said Gallop.

“Looking ahead we have exciting developments for next season with the new broadcast arrangements that will see Fox Sports and SBS TV covering matches, which will extend our reach across Australia.

“In the digital space, we’ll have live streaming of Hyundai A-League matches for the fi rst time next season and which can only help boost the size of our online audiences.

“We have a great story to tell and we are developing new channels to deliver outstanding football content.”

Central Coast Mariners head

coach Graham Arnold said he believes his side has “achieved nothing” so far this Hyundai A-League season and has challenged his team to keep improving as the domestic campaign continues.

The Mariners consolidated

their place atop the Hyundai A-League standings with a 2-0 win over Melbourne Heart at Bluetongue Stadium on Friday, December 14, but following the game, Arnold told the media it was much too early to start labelling their 2012-13 A-League season a success.

“As I said to the boys yesterday and just now, we’ve achieved nothing,” said Arnold.

“We’ve put ourselves in

a great position to have a successful season but we’ve achieved nothing.

“They don’t hand trophies out in December, they hand them out at the end of March - April.

“There are still 16 games to go and the players have set their own standards in terms of performance.

“The players know exactly what I want, and I won’t let up on them.

“There will be no

complacency that will sneak into the dressing room.

“The players know that if they have one or two off games, there’s a good chance they won’t play next week,” said Arnold.

The festive period is full on for Arnold’s troops as they battle Wellington Phoenix (Away), Sydney FC (Away), Perth Glory (Home) and Western Sydney Wanderers (Away) in the space of just 16 summer days.

Mariners have achieved nothing, says Arnold

The East Gosford Football Club is

celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

Known in its early years as the Dinosaurs, the Rams have turned into one of the Central Coast’s largest football clubs.

“The club started with 20 players in 1963, to about 780 members today,” said senior vice president Stuart Wetherall.

“A reunion day is being organised for this year to coincide with the completion of renovations to the clubhouse.

“The clubhouse was relocated from the waterfront

to its current position where it was offi cially opened in September 1971.

“It’s had a few coats of paint over the years, but through fundraising and grants, it’s fi nally getting the makeover it needs to bring it up to modern standards.”

Former players and parents are also being asked to have a search for memorabilia and old team photos.

“We have received some amazing pictures of teams from the early 60s, 70s and 80s over the last couple of weeks, and thought this was a chance to collect and archive the clubs history for show on the reunion day,” said Mr Wetherall.

The Central Coast Mariners ended

2012 in fi ne fashion, defeating a 10-man Perth Glory outfi t 1-0 in the Hyundai A-League Round 14 clash at Bluetongue Stadium on New Year’s Eve.

A 68th minute goal from Bernie Ibini ensured Central Coast continued on its winning streak at Gosford and its dominant record over the purple-whites.

It was a cagey start to the encounter with relatively few clear-cut opportunities created by either side.

The fi rst opportunity of the match came in the 17th minute as Mariners’ right-back Pedj Bojic went on a marauding run down the right fl ank and delivered a dangerous cross to stand-in captain Michael McGlinchey.

McGlinchey couldn’t quite connect with Bojic’s ball, as former Mariners’ shot stopper Danny Vukovic raced off his line to claim possession.

Perth were handed an opportunity to break the deadlock just before the interval, as a left-footed cross from attacking midfi elder Steven McGarry found the usually clinical Shane Smeltz

who missed from close range.

Graham Arnold must have provided some sage words to his troops at the interval, as the hosts began the brighter of the two teams after the half-time break.

The yellow and navy managed to fi nd the back of the net soon after the restart.

Unfortunately for the partisan crowd of 14,591 at Bluetongue Stadium, Adam Kwasnik’s headed effort was ruled offside.

Central Coast had another opportunity to open their account shortly after with a Bojic free kick from outside the box.

Nevertheless, the defender’s effort from range sailed well over the woodwork.

In the 68th minute Arnold’s team found the decisive goal of the contest via the boot of substitute Ibini.

Oliver Bozanic provided a pinpoint pass to the attacking ace, who made no mistake in lifting his strike past Vukovic from close range.

Glory mentor Ian Ferguson decided it was time to make changes to his side in a bid to take something from the match, and subsequently introduced Billy Mehmet and Nick Ward

for Joshua Risdon and Travis Dodd.

However, things went from bad to worse for the visitors with van den Brink given his marching orders after receiving his second yellow card of the match for his foul on Mile Sterjovski.

Central Coast continued to dominate and came close to doubling their advantage with just over 10 minutes remaining.

A well-taken corner from Bojic found the head of Sainsbury, who was just unable to fi nd the back of the net.

Goal scorer Ibini was looking to add to the scoreboard in the dying stages of the match, but the young gun failed to test Vukovic as he fi red his shot high and wide.

Nevertheless Ibini’s third goal of the campaign proved to be enough for the yellow and navy to consolidate their place atop the Hyundai A-League ladder, and fi nish 2012 with an impressive home record at Bluetongue Stadium.

Central Coast Mariners travel

to Launceston, Tasmania, this week for their round 16 Hyundai A-League test against Ange P o s t e c o g l o u ’ s Melbourne Victory at Aurora Stadium on Saturday, January 12.

The Mariners and Victory last squared-off in round seven of this season’s A-League, playing out a pulsating 2-2 draw at a raucous Etihad Stadium.

Saturday’s meeting promises to be another entertaining affair, with two of the form teams and top coaches of the competition going head-to-head in front of what’s expected to be a strong Tasmanian attendance.

While every game in the Hyundai A-League is crucial, Saturday’s fi xture will take on extra meaning for the Mariners as a Club.

The yellow and navy will become the fi rst franchise to play 200 A-League matches.

Moreover, midfi eld whiz Michael McGlinchey, who

celebrated his 26th birthday on Monday, January 7, is set to make his 100th Hyundai A-League appearance for the Club.

The Mariners will present McGlinchey with a memento of this achievement prior to their next home game at Gosford’s Bluetongue Stadium against Newcastle Jets on Saturday, January 19.

Gun central defender Trent Sainsbury will miss the clash with Victory due to suspension after he picked up his fi fth yellow card of the campaign away to Western Sydney Wanderers on Sunday, January 6.

While the injury was minor, both Clubs agreed that it was in Ryan’s best interests to remain in Australia under

the care of the Mariners’ medical department for the foreseeable future.

It is envisaged that he will be available for selection for the Hyundai A-League round 16 fi xture against Melbourne Victory in Launceston on Saturday, January 12.

Ryan was due to depart Australia on Monday, January 7, bound for the United Kingdom where he was to spend 10 days training with Rangers Football Club.

“I was in Scotland over

Christmas and spoke with (Rangers manager) Ally McCoist about Mathew Ryan,” Central Coast Mariners General Manager of Football Mr Lawrie McKinna said.

“It is a credit to Mat and to our Club that Ally was well aware of Mat’s ability and potential and immediately offered for him to join Rangers for a training spell.”

An 89th minute goal from Qantas

Socceroo Brett Emerton earned Sydney FC a narrow 1-0 win over Central Coast Mariners at Allianz Stadium on Thursday, December 27.

In front of 16,887 fans, the Mariners created numerous chances to defeat the Sky Blues, however, couldn’t capitalise at Moore Park with a mixture of poor fi nishing and determined Sydney defending Central Coast’s best attacking efforts.

The Mariners lost their composure late on with captain John

Hutchinson sent off for his second bookable offence, before attacking midfi elder Tomas Rogic was shown a straight red in the fi fth minute of added time.

Earlier, striker Daniel McBreen picked up his fi fth yellow card of the season, earning an automatic one-match ban.

The ill-discipline shown by the Mariners forced Central Coast head coach Graham Arnold to make a number of changes to his side when the Club hosted Perth Glory at Bluetongue Stadium on New Year’s Eve.

Arnold admitted after the match that the cards collected by his men had left him disappointed.

“I thought we played well in patches and we defi nitely had the chances (to win the game),” Arnold said.

“I thought in the fi nal third we didn’t take enough responsibility to shoot.

“The performance was positive but the ill-discipline was the negative of the performance and I don’t like that type of thing at all.

“We’ve talked many times before about stupid yellow cards

and things like that and we’re going to be hurt now for the next game because McBreen’s out, and now Tommy as well as Hutchinson.”

Arnold also told the media that his team needed to get used to being targeted by opposition sides given their current place atop the Hyundai A-League ladder.

“We have to get used to the fact we are sitting up the top of the table and teams will lift against us,” he said.

“We’ve seen that two weeks in a row with Wellington and now Sydney.

Overall it was not a fl ash night.

“You saw tonight that they (Sydney) were prepared for the fi ght, and I think they were still hurting from the 7-2 loss up at Bluetongue and they wanted some revenge and they got it.”

Arnold added that important lessons would be learnt from the defeat, especially for his brigade of youngsters.

The former Socceroos boss praised defender Hayden Morton on his efforts at right back on debut.

“I thought Hayden Morton was fantastic in his debut,” he said.

“I thought he handled

everything that was thrown at him real well.

“The young boys will learn from it.”

The best of Central Coast’s opportunities to earn a point or better from the fi xture came via the boots of McBreen and Rogic.

The A-League’s top goalscorer, McBreen, skewed an effort just wide in the 13th minute after Sydney defender Adam Griffi ths had gifted the yellow and navy possession, and Bernie Ibini had slipped the former Scunthorpe United man in.

Midway through the second stanza, McBreen showed silky skills in the box before fi ring an effort at goal.

Sydney gloveman Vedran Janjetovic, however, pulled off a wonder save to deny the Mariners the lead.

Substitute Mitchell Duke laid on a great chance for Rogic in the 84th minute, however, the usually deadly attacker scooped his right foot shot over the bar from eight yards.

Sydney FC made the Mariners pay for not converting at least one of their opportunities in the 89th minute.

With the ball fl oated in by Ali Abbas from the left, Emerton leapt above Joshua Rose before steering his header beyond

Mariners custodian Mathew Ryan.

Emerton’s goal wasn’t to be the only late drama on display.

Hutchinson’s second yellow saw him dismissed from the fi eld, while deep into added time, Rogic was ordered from the pitch after he collided with Rhyan Grant.

Central Coast Mariners boss

Graham Arnold was upbeat following his side’s 1-1 draw with Wellington Phoenix in New Zealand on Saturday, December 22.

Speaking down the line from the land of the long white cloud, Arnold said he believed his team did a stellar job to draw with Ricki Herbert’s men at Westpac Stadium.

“We played against a very strong Phoenix team and if Wellington keep playing like

they did today for the rest of the season, there won’t be too many teams that come to Westpac Stadium and take home points,” Arnold said.

“We have played seven of our fi rst 12 matches away from home, two of those in New Zealand.

“From two matches against Wellington, we have claimed four points.

“There won’t be too many teams that will replicate our success here.”

Mariners’ striker Daniel McBreen scored his 10th goal of the campaign for the yellow and navy just

before half time, however, Wellington’s Spanish midfi elder Dani Sanchez restored parity to the contest in the 84th minute to ensure his side collected a point from the clash.

Meanwhile, Central Coast Mariners Youth consolidated their place atop the National Youth League ladder with a 3-1 win over the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra on Saturday afternoon.

Goals from Louis Bozanic, Daniel Bragg and Patrick Dixon trumped Joshua Barresi’s 23rd minute opener for AIS in the nation’s capital.

Tomas Rogic received a three

match suspension on Saturday December 29, following his 95th minute red card against Sydney FC on Thursday, December 27.

The independent Match Review Panel (MRP), consisting of Simon Micallef (chair), Alan Contini and

Alan Davidson, convened to consider the Hyundai A-League round 13 incident on Saturday afternoon.

Having been advised of the additional two match sanction to go with Rogic’s automatic one game ban for receiving a red card against the Sky Blues, Central Coast Mariners FC decided not to appeal the decision.

Rogic said he was disappointed by the

additional two match penalty, however, he and the Club accepted the decision of the MRP.

Rogic expressed remorse for his actions.

Rogic will next be available for selection when Central Coast Mariners host Newcastle Jets at Bluetongue Stadium in Hyundai A-League round 17 on Saturday, January 19.

attacking midfi elder Tomas Rogic will depart Australia on Thursday, January 10, to link with Scottish h e a v y w e i g h t s Glasgow Celtic at their mid-season training camp in Spain.

The ‘Bhoys’ are currently in Spain preparing for the second half of the Scottish Premier League season

as well as their UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie against Italian giants Juventus commencing in February.

Rogic will participate in training as well as sports science and fi tness testing with Celtic in Spain, however, the Mariners have confi rmed that no offer had been tabled for the recently capped Qantas Socceroo.

Central Coast Mariners General Manager of Football Lawrie McKinna said: “This is a great opportunity for Tomas

to train with Celtic’s fi rst team squad.”

“Celtic are in their mid-season break and are busy preparing for their Champions League matches against Juventus starting in February, so Tom will undoubtedly learn a lot from the experience.”

Rogic will rejoin his Mariners teammates on Thursday, January 17, two days before he will next be eligible to represent the yellow and navy against Newcastle Jets on Saturday, January 19, at Bluetongue Stadium.

Nine Peninsula Junior Touch

teams competed in the Peak Sports Central Coast Junior Touch Championships at EDSACC Oval on Sunday, December 16, which saw the U16 Boys’ team defeat Berkley Vale in the Grand Final.

The Club has participated

in the competition for seven years and, according to Peninsula Junior Touch representative coordinator Ms Maxine South, “greatly improved” its’ ranking this year.

“Teams from Sydney, Newcastle and the Upper Hunter region were also present this year which made the weekend very competitive,” said Ms South.

“We had both boys’ and girls’ teams from U10s to U18s play which

was excellent match practice leading up to the Peter Wilson Memorial Championships (Regionals) in Nelson Bay and Junior State Cup which will take place in Port Macquarie in February.

“All teams performed well under the hot conditions with two reaching the semi-fi nals.

“Overall it was a very successful weekend for all players, coaches and parents,” said Ms South.

Lisarow went down fi ghting in

the Sydney Cricket Ground Cup quarter fi nals, losing by 41 runs to a strong Combined Albury-Wodonga team on Thursday, December 27.

Lisarow did well to restrict their opponents to 8-221 off their 50 overs at Sohier Park but an unbroken ninth wicket partnership of 48 proved to be the difference.

Captain Chris Archer led the bowlers with 2-35 off 10 overs supported by Blair Lindsay with 2-35 off seven.

Lisarow-Ourimbah got off

to a bright start but everyone seemed to get out after getting started and failing to build their innings.

Ryan Fenning top-scored with 26 while Mitchell Coombs and Mitchell McBeath both got 24.

The total of 180, while respectable, just wasn’t enough against a well-drilled CAW side.

In other games, Merewether beat Dubbo and now play at Woongarrah Oval against Lake Illawarra who accounted for Tuggeranong while the other semi-fi nal sees Hamilton-Wickham, victors over Coffs harbour, playing CAW at Sohier Park.

Toukley District Cricket Club

held its annual Keith Roberts Futures Cup on Saturday, December 22.

Named after club patron and stalwart Keith Roberts, the Futures Cup sees two teams selected from junior teams and pitted against each other with a current premier league grade player thrown in to mentor.

This year saw Premier League captain Brett Lenton and James McCombie taking a team each.

Played on grass at Harry Moore OAM number one oval it was the fi rst opportunity for many of the younger player to play on this type of surface.

A slight change in format saw the match played at

twilight as a T20 affair.A crowd of over 100 club

and family members was on hand to cheer the teams on.

The Brent Lenton coached team batted fi rst and amassed 112 of their 20 overs with Conor and Deahn Wanstall top scoring with 37 and 25 respectively.

Damon Kellie was next best with a well-made 17.

The best of the bowlers for Team McCombie was Tyler Wood with 2-11 off his two overs including a hat trick.

Bailey King and Riley

O’Connell opened for Team McCombie and put on 34 for the fi rst wicket.

Zimamul Thanvi then combined for a partnership with Bailey to push the score to 53 before the next wicket fell.

It looked like Team McCombie was going to cruise to a win but some excellent bowling and fi elding from the likes of Ryan Sucking and Reece Dawson slowed the run rate.

The result came down to the last over with fi ve runs needed for the win.

Team Lenton held the batters to four resulting in a tie.

Each year Toukley District Cricket Club sends three players to the Bradman Foundation Residential Coaching Camp for a week long clinic.

At the conclusion of the match, it was announced that Riley O’Connell, Conor Wanstall and Davydd Smith were the three players selected to attend the clinic this month.

The Central Coast Marlins made

back-to-back wins after a 10-4 victory against the Manly eagles at Watanobbi Oval on Wednesday, December 12.

The scoring opened in the top of the fi rst with the

Manly side scoring a run to take the early advantage.

The Marlins hit back in the bottom half of the inning after a lead off hit from Michael Campbell, who advanced to third by Adam Howe.

Campbell scored after a single to Dan Smith to level the scores.

Pat Maat then homered to give the home side a 3-1 lead.

Manly chipped away at the Marlins lead scoring single runs in the third and fourth innings; levelling the scores at 3-3.

The Marlins took the lead scoring a run in the fi fth after a lead-off Triple to Scott Harrison, who was scored by an RBI single to Todd Bowden.

The scores became level at four apiece after the visitors scored in the top half of the sixth inning.

In the bottom half of the sixth inning, the Marlins busted the game open scoring six runs capped off Maat’s second home run of the game taking the score to 10-6 where the score remained.

Standouts with the bat were Michael Campbell and Scott Harrison who both collected three hits to go along with Maat’s two home runs.

The Marlins will hope to creep closer to the top four when they take on Manly, who currently occupy fourth spot on the State Baseball league ladder, this Sunday at Springfi eld Baseball Park.

Council in negotiations with developer over proposed $500M Chinese Theme Park

Wyong Council received an updated report on the status of the proposed site for a Chinese Cultural Theme Park on Warren Rd, Warnervale, at its ordinary meeting of Wednesday,

November 19.Chinese Theme

Park representative Ms Amanda Lee addressed the meeting and explained how the venue would provide jobs for residents of Wyong Shire and would be a boost for the local economy.

Ms Lee said while the majority of the revenue for the theme park would come from private proprietors, the Chinese Government was supportive of their plan to construct in Warnervale.

It was resolved at the meeting that the mayor and general manager urgently negotiate with Australia Theme Park Pty Ltd with the objective of achieving an agreement for sale of the proposed site where Council’s risks and liabilities would be minimised and where a satisfactory sale price was offered by the purchaser.

Council has received a number of visits and documents from Chinese delegates during the past two years, with many infl uential businessmen and Government offi cials indicating support for the project.

All support is dependent upon the issue of land tenure and zoning issues

being resolved between Council and Australia Theme Park Pty.

The site, at Lot 3 Warren Rd, Warnervale, has a total area of 179.277 Ha.

The site includes Warnervale Airport and a portion of Porters Creek wetland.

The village would be a working village with accommodation, shops, restaurants, galleries and tourist accommodation.

The proposal is expected to cost in the vicinity of $500 million making it one of the largest private sector developments in Wyong Shire and the Central Coast.

In March last year Council considered a Mayoral Minute in relation to the proposal from Australia China Cultural Foundation Incorporated (ACCFI) to develop a Chinese Theme Park on Council owned land at Warnervale.

Council resolved among others matters to enter into a co-operation agreement to continue to progress the project.

This agreement was formally entered into on Monday, August 15, 2011 with mayor Cr Doug Eaton and the President of ACCFI, Mr Bruce Zhong signing the

agreement.The terms of the

agreement identifi ed that Council grant ACCFI a non-exclusive licence to enter the land for the sole purpose of carrying out investigatory works to support the development of the project.

The period of the agreement was from Friday, July 1, 2011, to Thursday, June 30, 2012, with the agreement having now lapsed.

During the period of the agreement ACCFI engaged consultants Cardno to undertake a desktop review of environment, engineering and planning constraints with regard to the proposed development.

The review identifi ed that the current zoning of the property as Industrial would not permit all of their proposed uses, however, this matter could be addressed by making a submission to rezone the land to permit the proposed land use through the exhibition period of LEP 2012.

The cost of this review undertaken by Cardno is reported to be in the vicinity of $250,000.

At a councillor briefi ng session held in June of this year, an update of the current situation was presented

with particular emphasis being placed on the fi nancial models available to this project.

In August this year, an offer to purchase the site from Council was received from Mr Zhong, however, this offer was considered unacceptable to Council with a response being forwarded detailing Council's position in the matter.

In October, Council

received a conditional offer to purchase the site for $10 million from the Australia Theme Park Pty Ltd.

The conditions imposed inappropriate risk and obligations on Council and as such the offer was rejected and the Australia Theme Park Pty Ltd was advised accordingly.

Council staff are currently preparing a land economics report

on the site that will be used to guide future decision making on this site

The mayor and general manager of Council have been requested to report the outcomes of the negotiations at the next ordinary Council meeting on Wednesday, November 28.

Chinese Cultural Theme Park to be among the biggest tourist attractions in AustraliaAn agreement

was offi cially signed by

Wyong Council on Sunday, December 2, to sell land that will be developed into the Chinese Cultural Theme Park at Warnervale.

At its ordinary Council meeting on Wednesday, November 28, Council approved the sale of 15.7 hectares of land at Warnervale to the Australian Chinese Theme Park Pty Ltd (ACTP).

Council sold the land for $10 million for the purpose of constructing the $500 million Theme Park.

Wyong mayor Cr Doug Eaton signed the agreement to sell the land in front of the Director Consular who was representing the Chinese Consular General Mr Aimin Fu and representatives of the ACTP at the Shanghai Stories Chinese Restaurant in Chatswood.

Member for Wyong Mr Darren Webber was also in attendance.

“This is undoubtedly one of the most momentous occasions in the history of this Council, and the Central Coast,” mayor Cr Eaton said.

“What this proposal will do is turn the Wyong

Shire into a tourist mecca and bring millions of dollars’ worth of tourism into the area, which will have a fl ow on effect to the entire region’s economy.

“Outside the Opera House and Harbour Bridge, this has the potential to be among the biggest tourist attractions in the State.

“Council is genuinely excited by this project and personally, I cannot

wait for construction to offi cially start.

“By selling this land, we have not only made a signifi cant profi t, but we have set in place a unique and, in time, iconic tourist venture that will benefi t the entire Central Coast.

“This is indeed a very historic occasion and I congratulate the Council staff and councillors for their support and enthusiasm towards this

project.“I would also like to

thank the ACTP for their commitment towards getting this off the ground and realising Wyong Shire was the best area in the country to accommodate such a development.

“They are the ones investing the money, Council has merely supported them,” said mayor Cr Eaton.

It is anticipated that

construction on the Theme Park will start in 2015, and the whole project will be completed by 2020.

Upon completion, the Theme Park is expected to provide between 1500 and 2000 jobs.

The Park will have seven sections comprising China City Gate entrance, Tang and Song Academy, Water Towns in South China, Wyong Theatre, Panda Paradise, Royal

Villa and a Thanksgiving Temple

ACTP chairman Mr Bruce Zhong said he was delighted the land had been secured.

“This is just the beginning and we will now work hard to start detailed planning work,” said Mr Zhong.

“It is going to be a unique $500 million tourist attraction, employing more than a thousand people and bringing economic prosperity to Wyong Shire.

“We have received great support from the beginning from the Foreign Affairs Offi ce of the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government and Offi ce of Overseas Chinese Affairs of the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government.

“They twice sent a delegation to visit Wyong and the land.

“I would also like to extend my sincere thanks to Wyong Shire Council, mayor Doug Eaton, all the councillors and staff.

“Without Council’s great help and support, we wouldn’t have achieved this and I hope we can continue to work closely for the project and for Wyong Shire’s future prosperity,” said Mr Zhong.

The NSW Surf Life Saving

Championships will be held at Ocean Beach and Umina Beach from Friday, March 1, to Sunday, March 10.

It is anticipated that over 20,000 people will

visit the beach during the Championships.

The local organising committee is calling for tenders to provide coffee, tea and slushie-snow cone for sale to the general public during the Championships.

Tenders close on February 1.

A man in his 20s from Wamberal

has sustained injuries to his leg and hand after he was attacked by a shark at Diamond Head near Port Macquarie on Friday, December 28.

The Surf Emergency Response System was alerted and duty lifesavers and council lifeguards from Port Macquarie responded.

He was surfi ng on a stand up paddle board when the shark bit him on his left thigh. He also sustained injuries to his hand trying to force the shark away.

Ambulance offi cers treated the man at the scene and the Westpac Helicopter transported him in a conscious, stable condition

to Newcastle.The beach is an

unpatrolled location between Port Macquarie and Crowdy Head.

Surf Life Saving NSW lifesaving manager Dean Storey said he wanted to remind the public that the risk of shark attacks or encounters is always very low and that people were at far greater risk of drowning.

There have been fi ve coastal drownings in NSW this month.

“Holiday-makers who are concerned about sharks should stick to swimming at patrolled locations,” said Storey.

“That way, lifesavers and lifeguards can clear the water in the event of a shark sighting and fi rst aid support and equipment is immediately available.”
