Working with outstanding colleagues and students to build on the strong foundation and commitment to excellence in each of the six programs in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences is exhilarating. Enrollment in each program in the department continues to increase. The number of students selecting to study in the exciting fields of child and family studies, fashion design, fashion merchandising, general family and consumer sciences, interior design and nutrition sciences continues to increase. Each of the academic areas in the department seems to be on the cutting edge of societal needs and interests. Faculty are energized with such eager students and the environment is electric. A great place to be! If you have been on campus over the last year, you noticed that a lot of construction is underway. Across the street from the Mary Gibbs Jones Building is a new parking garage (hopefully, the parking woes will minimize) and just on the other side of the creek is the new Brooks Village Complex. Baylor University continues to expand and improve the facilities on campus. It is great to view such growth and progress. It will certainly be exciting when renovation and expansion of the facilities for the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences becomes a reality. Plan to come to campus and visit us during this upcoming year. We especially want to see you at Homecoming – November 2 – 3. The reception in your honor will be on Friday, November 2 from 5 – 6:30. Make your plans now to include FCS in your schedule! If you are not able to come then, come by another time and experience past memories and begin to form new ones!

Interior design students win national competionsThe 2006-2007 academic year was another one of outstanding accomplishments by both interior design students and alumni. In the fall, six interior design students placed in the ASID Student Day Design Competitions. The design team of seniors, Kate Lagoy, Megaan Pelaar, and Hung Cao, placed in the hospitality design category as a runner-up with their design of the

Boiler Room, a trendy restaurant concept. Also in the commercial arena, senior April Heflich received recognition with her children’s retail space, Quack and Oink. Junior Rebecca Taddia brought home first place with her design of a Kosher Kitchen.

The spring semester brought more award recognitions and outstanding activities. In January, April Heflich, senior and LEED AP (Leadership for Energy and Environmental Design—Accredited Professional), hosted a six week seminar for her peers entitled, Think Green. The seminar was sponsored by the ASID student chapter. She did an outstanding job and is truly an inspiration to her fellow design students. In February, seniors, Ashley Goad, April Heflich, Kate Lagoy, and Megaan Plelaar participated in the IIDA Student Day and Charette in Houston. The design charette is a team-based, time intensive, problem solving design experience. Each student was placed on a team with interior design students from other schools in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana. Ashley Goad represented the Baylor interior design team on the winning design concept. Two senior projects were submitted to the IDEC (Interior Design Educators Council) Student Competition. The project involved the design of a Battered Women’s Shelter in connections with the IDEC International Conference theme of Social Justice. Three projects were chosen from each regional area and then judged again at the national level.

The team entry of Ashley Goad and April Heflich and the entry of Megaan Pelaar and Kate Lagoy, placed at the Southwest Regional level. With great pride, the Baylor team of

Megaan Pelaar and Kate Lagoy took third place nationally, an outstanding accomplishment as these students competed with design students across the country.

Senior Laura Paulus, received the first BKM Architecture and Design Scholarship of $1000.

Dallas-based BKM Total Office of Texas is a office furniture company specializing in creative, comprehensive furniture solutions for higher education

The incoming 2007-2008 ASID Student Chapter President, Kristin Rose, was chosen by the ASID National Association to participate, all expenses paid, in the ASID Leadership Training Conference in Chicago in July. Kristin has attended two national ASID meetings as a student participant where her leadership skills have been recognized. She trained with student chapter leaders across the country.

Interior design Program welcomes Nikki Feilner, IIDA, IDECThe faculty, staff and students in the department are excited and pleased to welcome Nikki Feilner to the Interior Design Program at Baylor University. Ms. Feilner brings over fifteen years of professional experiences and fourteen years of university teaching experience to the program. She comes to Baylor University from Mississippi College in Clinton, Mississippi where she served as the interim program director for Interior Design and Assistant Professor. In addition, she has teaching experiences at the University of Memphis, Western Kentucky University and California Polytechnic State University. Ms. Feilner holds her B.S. and M.A. degrees in Interior Design from the University of Missouri. She brings experience with accreditation standards

Child and Family Studies Student does Practicum in GhanaSaskia Van Der Linden completed a practicum

experience this summer in Nkoranza, Ghana as a part of the annual Dutch Medical Ministry. For two months she lived in Nkoranza, Ghana and worked through the organization Operation Hand in Hand/ Peace of Christ.

Operation Hand in Hand functions as a community for children with disabilities, who were abandoned at very young ages with no place left to go. As a Child and Family Studies Premed student, she was specifically selected to work in the hospital

connected alongside the community. Saskia states “I have been given the opportunity of a lifetime and I am very excited for all the challenges that I will face.”

Kudos to the ‘06-’07 FCS AmbassadorsWhat a great job the 2006 -2007 ambassadors did at the Fall, Winter, and Spring Premiers. They represented the department and each program with skill and expertise! Visitors were pleased to have the opportunity to visit with ‘actual students’ in the sessions and asked very thoughtful questions. The Ambassadors were terrific at giving honest and sincere answers.

Piper Child Development CenterPiper is beginning our new school year with three new lead teachers. We are excited to find three very qualified teachers to add to our team. Teachers joining Erin Jacobus toddler lead teacher and Frances Koen Pre-K lead teacher are Candice Coulter, Krystle Warren and Chesley Barth

Maeyaert.

Candice is a Baylor grad ’03 in Secondary Ed and MS from U of North Texas ’06 in Human Development and Family Studies. Candice completed a Child Life Internship at

Children’s Medical Center in Dallas and mission work in Romania at an orphanage and in Africa. We welcome Candice to our infant classroom.

Krystle is a Mary Hardin-Baylor grad ’04 in EC-4. Krystle has taught Pre-K at Valley Mills Elementary for the last two years. She and her husband are the proud parents of a daughter, Paislee, fourteen months old. Krystle’s knowledge and energy make her the perfect fit for our twos class.

Chesley is a Baylor grad ’06 in Child and Family Studies. Chesley served an internship at Bluebonnet Youth Ranch and then was hired to work with the children there as a case manager. She brings to Piper her knowledge and experiences from being a lab student at Piper during her class work in Child and Family Studies. Her enthusiasm and energy are great for our three’s classroom.

We are continuing to work on our NAEYC self study and will submit for accreditation in fall of 08. With the new NAEYC accreditation criteria and our new teachers we feel we need additional time to adequately prepare for the final submission.

The Piper Child Development Center staff will attend the TAEYC conference in Ft. Worth in October. This will be the first time everyone will be able to go and experience a conference for early childhood development at this level. The conference will have three nationally know speakers in the field of early childhood education. We will be closing for one day for this special staff development.

Preparation for the upcoming school year is in full swing as we prepare for the lab students to come to Piper for hands on and practical experiences. Once again our classes are full for the 2007-08 school year. We continue to have a long waiting list for the coveted spots at Piper. We are increasing our infant classroom this fall to have eight babies. This will allow more observation and interaction with the infant stages for our students.
