I know I say it often, but I can’t quite believe how quick this year is going.I sat filling out the application form for my littlest to start nursery this September and I thought to myself that I must make sure that I have lots of quality time with him before he dons the uniform and I wave him through the school gates.

There are so many great places that I can take him to locally that he hasn’t experienced yet and so I’m on a mission to try them all (well as many as I can fit into 28 Fridays anyway).

Happy Birthday to you!A soft play centre in Stone will be celebrating their 1st birthday this month and they have some exciting news to share with all their customers.

‘Come Into Play’, located on the Whitebridge Estate, Stone opened it’s doors on 25th March last year and since then they have gone from strength to strength, so much so that they have just extended their party area to try to accommodate the ever increasing number of party bookings.

In March they will also be launching their dedicated 0-2s room, featuring tactile walls, mirrors, rocking flowers and much more. The room has been expertly designed to meet all of the physical and sensory needs of the little ones, whilst also focussing on safety.

Do you need a ‘Big Cup’ full of kindness?

Newcastle based Family Support Group ‘Big Cup’ is now up and running in its new location at Cornerstones Community Centre.

Run by Alice Charity, from 30th January 2013 the group will meet each Wednesday from 11am-1pm (term time only) at Cornerstones Community Centre, High Street, Silverdale.

Big Cup is run in a similar way to most toddler groups as there are plenty of activities to keep the

children occupied including painting, musical time, play-doh, arts and crafts, as well as regular sessions from Jo Jingles. But the focus here isn’t just about the children, it’s about giving support to the adults, parent to parent.

Sometimes parenting can feel overwhelming, and without a good support network in place every day can feel like such a struggle. Sometimes all you need is a friendly face, a good chat and a cuppa with other mums and dads that see life just like you do. Meeting people in the same situation can really make a difference. So pop along and join them at one of their sessions. There’s no cost involved, as each session is funded by Alice Charity. The children will get to enjoy a snack and drink and there’s free tea and toast for the adults too!

Potter, Designer and Entrepreneur, Emma Bridgewater visited St Dominic’s Priory School in Stone this January to officially open their new Science and Art Block.

The development of the new Science Block, partially funded by our PFA, was at times reminiscent of the programme ‘Grand Designs’. The school’s PFA were invited as guests of honour, in acknowledgement of their hard work in raising money through a variety of events.

On arrival Emma donned a lab coat and formally opened the Science and Art Block. In attendance were the PFA, parents, staff and pupils. She then visited each classroom interacting with the pupils who enjoyed talking to her about their science curriculum.

Emma then gave an inspiring and interesting talk in our Priory Hall which was packed, staff and pupils wanted to thank everyone for battling through the adverse weather conditions! Emma discussed her designs, business and belief in British manufacturing. She engaged the pupils who asked lots of interesting questions and were truly motivated by her enthusiasm and ‘joie de vivre’.

Stoke kids wow the crowds in Stage Show

‘Olivia’ is the female adaptation of ‘Oliver’ with a mix of other well-loved characters, such as Fagin & Dodger, Sherlock Holmes & Dr Watson and Scrooge. It offers a splash of ‘Annie’, a sprinkling of ‘My Fair Lady’ and a slice of ‘Sweeney

Todd’. The script is both heart-warming and exceptionally funny with a score full of completely original, toe tapping tunes.

The talented cast of ‘Olivia’ ranged from as young as 6 up to 16 years. All the children successfully auditioned for parts back in October and had been tirelessly rehearsing their lines, songs and dance routines every weekend and during the week to make ‘Olivia’ a roaring success. The Musicals creative team were made up of local professionals; directed by Actress Victoria Gotham, Choreography by Laura-Ann Smith and Musical Direction by Ashley Mellor.

Laura-Ann who is principal of both defy Gravity studios and Stagecoach Stoke-on-Trent has already booked another week at Stoke Rep Theatre next year to put on a similar production. The cast of Olivia were drama students of either, Defy Gravity Studios, Tunstall or Stagecoach Stoke-on-Trent based in Trentham.

from Kate Beddow at Growing Spirit KidsI am a big fan of natural living and particularly natural parenting, so when I found a recipe online the other week for homemade toothpaste which I knew the kids could help make, we decided to have a go.

You will need:

a clean pot with a screw on lid

a tea spoon for stirring

a measuring teaspoon for measuring!

a small bowl

peppermint essential oil

(or another essence if you prefer -

Daniel used Bergamot and loves it!)

xylitol (a natural sugar substitute which comes from

birch trees, available at health food stores and online)

bicarbonate of soda

coconut oil (available in some supermarkets, health food stores

and online)

How to: Mix 2 teaspoons of coconut oil with

1 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda,

2 teaspoons of xylitol

& 6 drops of peppermint oil (or other ingestible

essential oil) until blended thoroughly and the

mixture forms a paste.

Pop it into your pot and use by dipping your toothbrush in to the

pot and getting a tiny amount.

So why make your own toothpaste? Well, it’s fun,

it’s cheap, it’s 100% natural,

it doesn’t have any fluoride (which research has

shown is very damaging to brain development),

it encourages the kids to use it,

it makes your teeth feel AMAZING!

But most importantly, wait for it, it can actually

reverse wear to enamel and even repair small

cavities over time.

Reflexology

involves the physical act of applying pressure to certain areas or zones on the feet, hands, or ears. It is based on the theory that these zones correspond to specific organs, glands, and other parts of the body. For example:

uses essential oils and other aromatic plant compounds which are aimed at improving a person’s health or mood. Aromatherapy is generally applied in one of three ways:

Aerial diffusion - the oils evaporate into the air. The aim is to give the air a specific fragrance or to disinfect it.

Direct inhalation - the person breaths the evaporating oils straight in. This is commonly used for respiratory disinfection, decongestion, as well as for psychological benefits.

Topical applications - applied onto the skin. Commonly used for massage, baths, and therapeutic skin care.

Reflexology is a therapy which can be received by anyone at any age, from newborn babies to those receiving end of life care, and everyone in between.

Easter Fun Facts!Easter was originally a pagan festival – the ancient Saxons celebrated spring with a party in honour of its goddess, Eastre.

The Easter bunny also originated with the pagan festival of Eastre, as she was worshipped by the

Anglo-Saxons through her earthly symbol, the rabbit.

The first documented use of the bunny as a symbol of Easter appears in Germany in the 1500s, and it was the Germans who made the first

edible Easter bunnies in the 1800s.

Where did you play as a child? What started your interest in the natural world?

Chances are you will have played in a place near to your home that was outside. So that’s exactly what Staffordshire Wildlife Trust is doing with Wildplay, giving children the chance to explore nature near their own front door.

Their sessions are designed so that children can explore the natural world through play with lots of exciting activities such as den building, fire lighting, scavenger hunts, orienteering, games, crafts and much much more. They have sessions taking place in all the holidays at venues across Staffordshire

including Stoke and Rugeley.

As well as having lots of holidays activities Staffordshire Wildlife Trust have lots more for children and families to get involved with. The Nature Tots sessions are aimed at under 5’s and are a fantastic way for young families to enjoy wildlife together with crafts, stories and outdoor exploration. They offer programmes for schools, wildlife watch groups which meet monthly and have a number of visitor centres and nature reserves to explore.Spring is a great time to get outdoors and explore wildlife, with lots of exciting things to see and do right on your doorstep.

To help you and your family on your way to become top wildlife detectives Staffordshire Wildlife Trust have launched a brand new webpage to help families discover wildlife and the outdoors independently. The new page will give families some great inspiration and ideas of things to do each month.

Coming up in March and April there will be scavenger hunts to discover and spot the first signs of spring as winter disappears, and we start to see new spring flowers and birds making nests. The March activity will include organising a Mad Hatters Tea Party

Picnic with a trip to see real Mad March Hares boxing in the fields. Don’t worry if you don’t know the difference between a hare and a rabbit the webpage will be

complete with information a fact sheet of common differences.

There are loads of events taking place across the country during Real Nappy Week, where you can

meet people who use Real Nappies, get great advice as well as get your hands on nappies to see

how they work.

Real Nappies…Real ChangeThis year’s Real Nappy Week takes place 15 to 21 April, with the theme of ‘Real Nappies...Real Change!’ to inspire a new generation of parents to make the change.

Get FIT with FitBack and BumpsFitBack and Bumps is an exciting, educational and fun way to exercise safely in pregnancy. Run by Chartered physiotherapists, this educational exercise programme teaches you to work the core stability muscles for improved posture and management of mild back and pelvic pain.

FitBack and Bumps consists of four one hour sessions run weekly. Each week has an educational discussion topic covering the changing body during pregnancy, safe exercise during pregnancy, the role of the pelvic floor and positions for labour. Each discussion is interactive and responds to group need so we have a chat about any concerns and try to explain why changes happen during pregnancy. Everyone receives an information pack with the weekly discussion topics and exercise cards for continuation at home.

The sessions are run in very small groups in a safe and friendly environment in Alsager and Crewe. Anyone interested should be between 12 and 30 weeks pregnant and will be asked to complete a screening questionnaire prior to joining the programme.

Miller & Carter Steakhouse is situated on the A34 Talke Road on the site of the former Harecastle Farm. Its stunning décor and and sophisticated ‘young diners menu’ offers an alternative family dining experience.

Too often I find that pubs and restaurants marketed as ‘Family Friend’ have a children’s menu that is made up with the idea in mind that children only like very basic food, namely something with chips. Sausage and chips, nuggets and chips, burger and chips, pizza and chips, chips, chips and more chips and although I

am sure that this may be the case for some, what happens if, like our children they prefer something a little more exciting?

Miller & Carter have answered our prayers and stepped out of the box. They have designed a ‘young diners menu’ that reflects the choices that are available in the main menu, with starters such as Crispy Dusted Calamari and Buffalo Chicken wings. The theme continues throughout

the menu with main courses like 4oz Rump Steak and Cherry Tomato Linguine and deserts such as Glazed Clotted Cream Rice Pudding or Winter Berry Eton Mess. The only thing that could be improved upon would be the availability of drinks suitable for the little ones, as my 2yr old was given a drink in a very large glass. So I would suggest that if you do have a young child you take your own beaker.

There is a small gated outdoor beer garden that although doesn’t have any play equipment, is a safe area for the children to run around in, enabling you to take advantage of the warmer weather. If you do choose to sit indoors there are plenty of high chairs and booster seats, but management did tell us that it is advisable to book if you are choosing to join them in the evening, otherwise there can be quite a wait for a table (which isn’t great with young children).

Lots of FUNdamentals at Stafford Gymnastics Centre

The programme has been specially designed by British Gymnastics and early years specialists to stimulate and engage

children from 18 months, and introduce them to physical activity. Emma Edensor is manager at Stafford Gymnastics Centre and runs the FUNdamentals programme;

“It’s such a unique opportunity for parents to really interact with their child, and do something that benefits them physically with the reassurance they’re in safe hands. We’re lucky to have a brand-new purpose build

facility, dedicated to FUNdamentals during the day, so children are safe and focused.”

Instructors are specially trained and tailor each 45-minute session to the development needs of the age group. By using soft-play and basic gymnastics equipment they help to develop essential coordination skills and build physical strength.

“During a class, I also work with parents to teach them how to take parts of the session home. I try to arm them with the knowledge and skills to bring physical movement into everyday life.”

However, it’s not just about getting active with your little one, FUNdamentals is a perfect opportunity for pre-schoolers to explore the world around them. The programme is made up of 16 themes, such

as weather, healthy eating and seaside, which change with each course. They will be tiptoeing along rainbows, jumping in puddles or going whenever else their imagination takes them.

Funky Cat is the central character of the programme and with the help of his friends he guides children on their journey. Springy, Steady, Speedy, Stretchy, Sporty and Swingy each have their own strong-point and help children to identify physical skills and pin-point their own strengths. Give a little respectRespecting each other is an issue that we hear echoed in the media, more recently through new equality laws, in schools and from us as parents when we are talking to our children. But do we talk about it too much so it becomes meaningless to our young people as they grow and develop?

I think not; as an educationalist, respect for others is the basis of good relationships. Babies and young children learn who they are and what they can do as they develop relationships. Not only this, but through friendships they learn to respect different viewpoints and customs and develop interpersonal skills. In any setting or at home this can only be done if they are in a happy, supportive and caring environment.

Our interactions as teachers, supervisors, nursery nurses or parents are reflected in our children’s actions as they use us as role models for behaviour and through this they learn to develop their knowledge and understanding to begin to respect the world around them.

It is important to find time to allow your child to socialise. Research suggests that friendships develop from as early as two years of age. This mutual respect and understanding therefore underpins their development so that friendships flourish. They can then go on to accomplish more as they receive positive reinforcement for their behaviour and the beginning of an understanding about their own unique characteristics.

As parents we can be proactive by sharing and talking as we read and discuss images that look at feelings. There are many feelings books that are available (see list below). Alternatively, just a simple heart to heart discussion to help our young people understand it’s alright to feel like that, so they grow to understand and respect their own feelings as well as those around them.
