We are a team of mums and young people who are passionate about supporting families,
helping them to find everything they should need from things to do, places to visit, advice and support, education, childcare and clubs
& classes.
Our desire to create a product that made our lives easier as parents and young people has
started - we now have this magazine, website and a free app!
We are really proud to be reaching over 47,000 families per week in the South Staffordshire area along with distributing 20,000 copies of
our magazine into family homes.
The FYI Families magazine is our way of giving back to the community - we’d love to hear

In 1966, Diana Baumrind identified three parenting styles that most experts have broadly accepted ever since:
• Permissive: parents give lots of love and attention with few rules or constraints. Children are encouraged to explore freely without repercussions and to see their parents not as role models, but as a ‘resource’ for them to use as they wish.
• Authoritative: parents are highly supportive and highly demanding, offering a balance of rules and boundaries that are clearly explained, with plenty of opportunities to explore and develop.
• Authoritarian: parents focus on controlling the behaviour of their children and believe that they should always ‘do as they are told’.
In practice, most of us slide between these styles, depending on circumstances. But it probably won’t come as a surprise to learn that authoritative parenting is the one the experts believe works best. Research shows that parents who provide positive support and high expectations plus a lot of opportunities to try
things out are more likely to raise children who are confident and motivated, with good critical thinking skills. Providing firm and consistent limits and a reason for the rules promotes social responsibility and the right kind of assertiveness, and enables children to regulate their own behaviour.
Authoritative parents make demands that tally with their children’s ability to take responsibility for their behaviour - which makes children feel competent and self-reliant. This in turn helps to build self-esteem, cognitive development and emotional maturity.
Authoratitive parenting works in all contexts - so online, it enables children to behave sensibly when they are not being supervised and to identify (and minimise) risks.

FYI Families interview of local author
Julia Suzuki
The book is published by Dino (John Blake) and FYI Families have been given
a 10 % discount for all their readers.
FYI: Do you have must-have while you’re writing?
Julia: Coffee - caffeine gives me that extra buzz.
FYI: What do you consider the best part of being a writer?
Julia: I think writing is extremely relaxing, and takes you away from any negative worries. For me it is like
Synopsis: Dragor is a secret land where the remnants of the dragon clans have gathered to make a life, hiding from humanity, and hoping their other enemy, the dragsaurs, are truly extinct. They live their lives as their talents fade. Then a strange egg is laid and from it comes Yoshiko, a dragon with a unique desti-ny. Is he a cursed danger as some claim, or is he destined to return the missing magic to the clans?
FYI Families Review:The Gift of Charms is an enchanting novel that tells a story from the dragon’s point of view. It is written for an audience of the tween to young teen range, but older people will enjoy it as well. The dialogue is geared for a younger audience, but the story holds together, following a classic coming of age storyline, as Yoshiko decides to accept a challenge from an older, reclusive dragon that sets him on the trail of adventure. The book is bursting with positive messages and we highly recommend it for all!
going into another world – a better one!
FYI: Why did you decide to write a fiction/fantasy series?
Julia: I love adventure and fantasy is my favorite genre. I feel this genre is where I am meant to be as a writer.
FYI: Do you have a favorite character from your book?Julia: It changes sometimes
but Amlie always seems to be the one I mention most when asked. I like her qualities: de-termined, loyal, feisty and she punches above her weight.
FYI: Can you tell us anything about what are you working on?
Julia: I have just finished the next novel in the series.
Julia Suzuki, Fiction and Fantasy author, was kind enough to answer a few questions for us.
