We are off to a stellar 40th Anniversary year! We know you enjoyed the wonderful 40th Anniversary party on the Plaza. Thank you to all who helped plan and attended our celebration toasting The Guilds’ 40 years. My theme this year is “Building Relationships for 40 Years” and we will continue building our relationships with the Center, our Chapters and our Community. We share a beautiful relationship with The Segerstrom Center for the Arts. The evolution of the Center from one building to an entire campus is inspirational. Our Community Engagement programs are impressive and varied. I just read that the Center presents more than 4,000 education events each year. Very impressive! The Guilds of Segerstrom Center for the Arts

Dear Friends,

What a great pleasure to start our 2018-2019 Season by congratulating you on the 40th anniversary of The Guilds of Segerstrom Center for the Arts. Every time I attend one of your fundraisers or see you at the Center, I am always so impressed by your warmth, enthusiasm and passionate support of Segerstrom Center.

The season has only just started. I know many of you attended its opening featuring the world premiere of Isadora. There is, of course, more great dance to come. Over the next few months we’ll have two beautiful ballets from American Ballet Theatre: our annual holiday treat, The Nutcracker, and the West Coast premiere of a spectacular new production of a ballet rarity, Harlequinade. And later in spring, thrilling productions from the Eifman Ballet of St. Petersburg and Mark Morris Dance Group will be showcased at the Center.

I shouldn’t have favorites, but I am especially looking forward to the Tony Award-winning show, Dear Evan Hansen. There’s a reason it won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and was hailed as “one of the most remarkable shows in musical theater history.” I look forward to sharing this very special show with you and the season’s many other award-winning Broadway productions.

I hope you’ll agree that the Center’s 2017-2018 season was pretty amazing. More than one million people attended performances, participated in our community engagement and education programs, and enjoyed free events on our new Julianne and George Argyros Plaza. I have seen Guilds members at nearly every Plaza event, and I thank you for becoming regulars and spreading the news about its entertaining presentations and welcoming environment with your families and friends.

Thank you for all you do on behalf of the Center and our community. Whether you are enjoying performances or raising money to support our community engagement and education programs or advocating for our ABT Gillespie School and School of Dance and Music for Children with Disabilities – you personify the wonderful spirit of the Center. And that is so appreciated, inspiring and encouraging to all of us.

Together, we will continue to expand and enhance what we present on our stages, the programs we take into schools and the initiatives we’ve launched to engage the County’s many diverse communities. Together, we are demonstrating that communities thrive when we work together and make the arts matter.

With all best regards,

Terrence W. Dwyer President

The Pas de Deux Chapter held a Family Membership Drive during the ABT William J. Gillespie School Parent Orientations in August. Parents received information about the activities and events of Pas de Deux and that we support the training and education of the students of the school.

In September, we held a communit y outreach event at the Williams Sonoma Home Store in the Crystal Cove Shopping Center where members and their families participated in heathy snack and meal preparation.

The Flying Dutchman Chapter had a most successful fundraiser on September 8th at the lovely home of Robert and Gail Sebring. Our theme was the movie “Grease” and everyone had fun in their costumes depicting Sandy, Danny and Elvis.

Jacki Wirta & Carryl Hytopoulos put the fun night together. Tim Nelson, music director at Huntington Beach High School, had his talented kids entertain and they were so professional. The food was catered by Bristol Farms and the delicious dessert was donated by Gelato Paradiso. Our new members are Frank and Jeanne Gibson.

It was great to see everyone at our September lunch. The speaker, at torney Raquel Cohen, gave an informative presentation on the work the California Innocence Project does in helping wrongfully convicted inmates to be exonerated.

We were fortunate to have Anne Marie Eckman, our South County Area Guild Chairman, attend our meeting. She stated that the purpose of Segerstrom Center for the Arts is to provide world class performing arts and arts education that reach more than 300,000 young people each year as well as community engagement programs.

As we ended last year, June was a very busy month. Mary Shebell presided over our chapter’s lovely installation and dinner at the Newport Harbor Yacht Club. Mary gave each officer a flower symbolic of the responsibilities and functions of their job on the board. It was a very enjoyable evening.

We also arranged for a docent-led tour of the Orange County Museum of Art on their closing day bringing some potential new chapter members to attend. Informally Yours provided us with a very entertaining evening while enjoying the wonderful buffet dinner and the Fresh Rhythm big band. And finally, at the Guilds Installation Luncheon, Center Stage was awarded The Guilds Best Programs award and won third place in The Guilds annual Marine Toy Drive for Toys for Tots.

Our kick-off fundraiser, Sun, Sand & Surf with The Beach Boys, was held at the home of our chapter chair, Margaret Ann Vincent in August. Guests included members from Carmen and Stage Door chapters as well as a number of potential new member guests. We were able to raise $1,250 in support of Segerstrom Center for the Arts.

There’s a lot going on within Carmen Chapter. In June, we installed an absolutely stellar roster of officers for 2018-19. Susan Kinkade & Eileen Cirillo, Co-chairs; Wendy Fink as 1st Vice Chair Membership; Laureen Smith, Recording Secretary; Lauren Bossart, Corresponding Secretary; Susan Kinkade, Treasurer (again and yes, she is also co-chair); Diana Hardy, Public Relations; Pat Faust, Newsletter Editor; and Jackie Olstad, Parliamentarian.

With such great leadership, our year started on a very positive note…our bus trip to the California Science Center to view the King Tut exhibit was an unqualified success!

Guest Speaker

Nicole Balsamo, Executive VP of External Affairs, Segerstrom Center

Nicole spoke to The Guilds board at their October meeting about elements of fundraising at the Center. She

began with a brief overview of the history, beginning with the fateful letter presented by Elaine Redfield to

Henry Segerstrom to ask the Segerstrom family for land to build a performing arts center. Mr. Segerstrom was

impressed with the level of community backing (the strength of The Guilds) which influenced the family’s decision

positively. Nicole noted that contrary to the ideas held by those not in the Center family, the Center is a not-for-

profit entity and relies on support from the entire community to be successful. These misconceptions show us that

we still need to educate the general public about who we are and what we do.

Our All Guilds Gala Fundraiser will be on Saturday March 16, 2019 from 11:00am—3:00pm

at the Balboa Bay Resort. Honorees: Dee and Larry Higby

Presentation of The Guilds Inspiration Award

The Support Groups’ portion of the Center Fund budget

is $1.3 million for this year, a significant and important

segment of the Fund. But Guilds’ members also

contribute to ticket sales, as well as other fundraising

segments through their donations to the Center through

Friends memberships, participation in the Center’s

events, underwriting and other contributions to special

campaigns.

Nicole thanked the membership of The Guilds’ for all

their efforts and accomplishments over the past 40 years

in not only all the very important fundraising activities

and for being ticket buyers, but also introducing new people to the Center and their continuing ambassadorship

in the community. She invited The Guilds’ membership to attend events on the Argyros Plaza and shared how

family-oriented those events are. The Plaza is a great place to enjoy a night of jazz or an afternoon with

your grandkids. She closed her talk by reinforcing how very important The Guilds members are as part of

the Center’s family. The Center appreciates the members’ feeling that this is their home. And on behalf of the

Center staff and board, we thank you wholeheartedly.

Nicole went on to discuss Center budgets and how the money is raised through:

• ticket sales

• rentals

• other earned income

• endowment

• fundraising
