Joe WyseSuperintendent/President

Shasta College has a long and rich tradition in Intercollegiate Athletics. As a community college, we strive to foster a strong link between our athletes’ success in their chosen sport and in the classroom. We truly desire to help them become all that the term ‘student athlete’ infers. Shasta College is committed to the values of the California Community College Commission on Athletics: Student Health and Welfare, Academic Success, Ethical Conduct, Recognition of Excellence, Gender Equity, and Non-Discrimination.

I have enjoyed watching many of our student athletes over the past seven years as they demonstrated their abilities and showed a strong commitment to our college and the programs it offers. Our dedicat-ed coaches, faculty, staff and administration work tirelessly to provide many opportunities for our students to develop stronger character,

leadership and teamwork skills that will serve them in the many fields in which they will work upon transfer or graduation. All of us at Shasta College recognize and appreciate the tremendous community support of our athletic program and join you as you help our students gain the skills and abilities not only to succeed, but to thrive after college. I wish all the best to our athletes, teams, coaches and support staff. Go Knights!Joe Wyse, Superintendent/President

We are committed to seeing our student-athletes succeed on the field but, more importantly, in the classroom. I hope you enjoy watching our teams compete while also remembering the demands these student-athletes must balance with their respective sport and their academic responsibilities.

MEN’S SOCCER

Daniel ValdiviaMen’s Head Soccer Coach

Soccer has been a part of Daniel’s life since a very young age. Both of his parents were born in Jalisco, Mexico and soccer was always around Daniel’s fam-ily and home.

Daniel played recreational soccer from the age of 5 until the age of 19. He attended Enterprise High School in Redding, California and was captain of the varsity soccer team for both his junior and senior years. He was a Northern Athletic League (NAL) 1st Team All-League selection at the stop-per position. He played on a local U19 Division I team called Mavericks United after graduating from high school. Daniel completed his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Chico State and his Masters Degree in School Counseling from the University of La Verne.

Daniel has been coaching soccer since the age of 17. Daniel has been a head coach or assistant coach for various Redding Youth Soccer League teams (U6, U8, U10, U16, U19). In 2005, he helped coach a U19 Division 3 Redding boys team to a state championship final. He also coached for his former high school, Enterprise High School (boys and girls varsity and boys junior varsity). In 2004, he helped coach the Enterprise High School boys varsity team to their first section championship. Daniel has run or helped run various soccer camps in his com-munity and has multiple coaching licenses. Daniel Valdivia took over as head coach at Shasta College in 2012 and quickly turned the men’s soccer team into a playoff contending force. In his first two years coaching at Shasta College, the Knights equaled the number of wins they had over the four-year period prior to his start. Daniel was named GVC Coach of the Year after only his second year as head coach at Shasta College.

Growing up, Daniel was taught the value of a col-lege education. Although he is a Shasta College soc-cer coach, he is first and foremost a Shasta College counselor. Daniel’s desire is to not only assist his players in obtaining their athletic goals but also their educational goals. He feels fortunate to have

Shasta College in his community and takes great pride in working here as a coach and a counselor. Daniel expects his players to take both their educa-tion and participation in the soccer program seri-ously.

Daniel and his wife Katie have three children, (Taylor, Lillian, and Daniel Santiago). In Daniel’s spare time he enjoys spending time with his fam-ily, working in his yard and watching professional sports on television.

Jesse BandaAssistant Coach

Coach Jesse Banda was born and raised in Tampico, Tamaulipas Mexico. He played soccer every day as a youth, two to four hours each day. His

family did not have television, so soccer was his out-let. Even though his soccer field was just dirt and their goal posts were made of two branches with a rope holding them together, Jesse’s passion for the sport was strong, as his uncle played professionally and he often got to attend the pro games.

When Coach Banda came to the United States, it was the beginning of a completely new world for him. He attended James Lick High School where he joined the track, wrestling, boxing and karate teams. Unfortunately, soccer was not very popular and there were very few local teams.

While attending San Jose City College though, he was able to join a team and play recreationally. He then met the coach of a local soccer team who asked if he could help coach and it was at this time, aiding a youth team, that his coaching career began.

Through the years, Jesse Banda has coached vari-ous youth soccer teams. He was a coach at Central Valley High School for four years. He volunteered one year at Foothill High School and has coached at Shasta College since 2011, having served as an assistant coach and head coach. Presently, he is a volunteer coach for Enterprise High School and has been with them since 2010. He is looking forward to working with the Shasta College Men’s Soccer team this year and contributing his experience to the athletes.

Coach Banda graduated from Shasta College with an AA degree in Administration of Justice and works for Shasta County. He lives here in Redding with his family. His past time is coaching private soccer lessons to young soccer players and he is proud to say that he has his own soccer field at home made out of dirt with real goal posts!

Dan FultsHead Coach

Head Coach, Dan Fults, is a former collegiate soc-cer player with a passion for teaching. After grad-uating from Chico State, Dan earned his Master’s Degree in Education and became a teacher. He has coached soccer for 20 years and has also worked as a scuba instructor, a personal trainer and a CPR/First Aid instructor. One of the reasons Dan enjoys coaching and teaching so much is that he has to continue to learn himself in order to provide the highest level of education possible.

Coach Fults insists that coaching soccer is his fa-vorite endeavor. There is a sacrifice and effort that goes into soccer that is fulfilling. He says “Even if the results of a competition are that of a loss, fulfill-ment is attained through the knowledge that proper preparation was made and maximum effort was ex-pended.”

Dan’s family has a long history here in Shasta County. He lives in Redding with his wife, Cheerie, and son, Morgan. The family enjoys being out at the lake or on the river enjoying Northern California’s beautiful outdoors.

Roger HattonAssistant Coach

Assistant Coach Roger Hatton returns to help coach the Women’s soccer team at Shasta College. Hatton is no stranger to Knight’s Athletics. He has

been a part of Shasta’s football program for many years serving as the team’s manager.

Roger has coached for the Anderson Youth Soccer League for many years and has been an assistant for the West Valley High School soccer team. In 2005, Roger was selected as the Coach of the Year for District 9 youth soccer which covers the whole up-per North State. Roger and his wife, Charlene, have four daughters, three son-in-laws and seven beauti-ful grandchildren.

Steven HofferberAssistant Coach

Assistant Coach Steve Hofferber has been a student of the game his whole life. He has played for over twenty years, includ-ing being captain of his high

school varsity team his junior and senior years. Steve has played in college club leagues as well as on traveling adult teams. He is currently the head coach for a local competitive youth girls team and the coach for Sequoia Middle School. Teaching and sharing his passion for the game with the next gen-eration of soccer players is one of the things Steve loves most about coaching. Aside from playing and coaching, Steve is also a referee, licensed at the youth, high school, and collegiate levels. During his infrequent time away from the pitch, Steve enjoys traveling and experiencing new things.
