He saved many infielders by making great catches at first. The GREATEST moment in Phil’s long career was in 1971 at the ASA National Tournament in Springfield, Missouri. Chuck’s Dairy was facing Bonny Jones, MVP Pitcher of the 1970 Nationals. Chuck’s trailed 3-0 in the bottom of the seventh; when they loaded the bases with two outs. Bryn attended a small elementary school and in 1966 she began playing outfield for the school’s “all boys” softball team. This usually led to controversy when her team would beat the other boy’s teams. Even with the limited opportunities for female athletes in those days, Bryn didn’t think twice that this was out of the norm. In 1965, at age 13, Bryn began playing fast pitch softball for the Tropic Bowl in the Roches-ter Women’s League. Although her teammates were much older, her coach Char Alexander gave her a chance. Alexander said “her speed, strength and natural athletic ability made her an obvious centerfielder, where she played her entire career. Even though the ages of the team ranged from 17-35, Susie fit in immediately.” Geerdes was an exceptional outfielder making shoe-string catches look routine. Her tremen-dous speed allowed her to catch balls that no one else could get to. She led the league in stolen bases. Her hitting prowess allowed her to lead the league in home runs and rank at the top in batting average. She was a very gifted athlete! Bryn finally got the opportunity to play in her first state tournament in 1968. Prior to this she was not been eligible to play because she was too young. As reported by the local paper: “The team was made up of veteran players including Grace Reichart with over 15 years playing ex-perience and 16 year old Susie Geerdes. Young Geerdes took full advantage of her first state tournament appearance by hitting 3 home runs in 3 games before her team elimi-nated. Two years later, in 1970, at the state tournament in Columbia Heights, she was named to the 12 player all state team. In one game she stole 2nd and 3rd on consecutive pitches. Until 1970, Bryn not only played softball, but was also highly accomplished in track and field. She had hopes of trying out for the Olym-pics. During one of her league games, a track meet was going on right next to the softball field. Between innings, her teammates remem-ber her changing from her softball cleats into her track shoes, going to the track, running and winning her event, then coming back to play softball. Bryn always struggled trying to decide between softball and track, and in the end she followed what she loved. While playing in Rochester, her teams had won 6 city titles and she had played in 8 consecu-tive state tournaments. In 1974 & 1975 she helped her team reach the championship game. The 1975 tournament was the most memorable. Bryn collected 9 hits, scored 9 runs, and drove in 8. Her team had its second runner up finish for the second consecutive year, which at that point, was the highest finish ever for a women’s team from Rochester. In 1976 Bryn moved to Minneapolis and was invited to try out for the Avantis. She made the team and was a mainstay in the outfield for 6

Team accomplishments while Dick was playing included: • State Champion in 1966, region runner-

up that year, state runner-up in ‘63, ‘68 and ‘69

• In 1970 before leaving for the service, he was MVP of the Hutchinson Tournament. During the championship game, play was stopped and Dick was asked to step on the field and received a standing ovation for being the finest player in Minnesota

• State champ in 1983, runner-up in ‘81, ‘82 and ‘86, region champ in ‘81, ‘82 and third place in ‘83 & ‘86 national tournaments

Individual accomplishments included: • While in the Army at West Point Dick

served as intramural sports director • He played shortstop for the Poughkeep-

sie, NY team in the Eastern Seaboard League. He played in the National AA tournament for them

• Most years that he played he was team MVP and Batting Champ

• He was All-State in ‘68 & ‘69 • Dick was All-American and Batting Cham-

pion in the ‘81 National Tournament • He coached women’s softball at Willmar

Junior College. The first year they were state champions.

Dick Bjur died in March of 2008. We welcome one of the best Minnesota fast-pitch players ever, to the Minnesota Hall of Fame this evening.

When Bryn started playing league softball, she was one of the most feared hitters in the women’s league-she was only 13 years old. Outfielders would back up to the fence hoping she would hit a long fly ball, but that was usu-ally not the case. Because of her tremendous speed, Bryn could turn a routine single into a double; and if she was held to a single, she would usually steal a base on the next pitch. Her first coach, Char Alexander (HOF 1997), considers Geerdes “the best women’s softball player to come out of Rochester.”

At the age of 8, Bryn started playing sandlot ball with the neighborhood boys. She loved the game! When teams were chosen, she was often chosen first, which caused a bit of friction between Bryn and her older brother. On sum-mer days she played until the sun went down. Once when she arrived home after dark her parents “grounded” her from playing softball for 3 days. “Those were the longest 3 days of my life,” she said “but I always made sure I got home before dark from that point on.”

years. In an interview with the Rochester Post Bulletin Hall of Fame, Coach Merlin Woods (Woody) stated: “Sue’s an added dimension to our team...that young lady has a wealth of tal-ent...but she has more than talent-she is also a fine person and a natural leader. While Bryn was with the Avantis, she contin-ued her long ball hitting. At the Adler’s Tourna-ment in 1976 she helped lead the Avantis to the championship with 2 home runs in the championship game. Bryn was named to sev-eral all tournament teams, played in 5 national tournaments and was named co-captain of the Avantis in 1979. In 1981 Bryn had to give up softball to pursue her professional career. But after 15 years of successfully playing the game she loved so much, she “knew” that dreams do come true! In 2003 we lost Joe Alexander unexpectedly. His untimely death claimed him far too soon and many were left to mourn a coach, a men-tor, a leader and friend. In 1976, Norton was instrumented in Todd Chevrolet’s championship run in the class A state championship in Faribault, after losing its first game on Friday night and then winning 11 straight games. The final two games on Sun-day were against the tough Sauk Rapids Braves and Todd prevailed by the unusual slowpitch scores of 4-1 and 4-0 to wrap up a long day. Norton was a third baseman who had power, speed and as a good a glove and arm as any third baseman in the state. Norton was also a very popular player who was well respected by teams throughout the state. From 1975-1978, Norton was also on the Lakeville Jaycees state championship team which won the national title in 1978. In 1978, Todd Chev became the Menasha Paper team and won another state class A championship. Norton also won another state tournament in 1983 while playing with Sam McGee’s out of the Lakeville league. In 1984 Norton went to play with Schweich’s. With Schweich’s of Lakeville, the team went on to win a state title in 1986. And, if they had an MVP award in slowpitch for Minnesota, Norton would have won it easily in 1986. In 1988, Nor-ton began playing with the “over 35” Miller Lite team from Lakeville that won the state tourna-ment in 1991. In 1994, Norton played for Lakeville’s Korba

JOE ALEXANDERJOE ALEXANDER RochesterRochester

Nominated by Gary Hasley

When Char Alexander was inducted into the Minnesota Softball Hall of Fame in 1997, her husband Joe was beside her as he had been for 39 years. For 35 of those 39 years, Char and Joe dedicated themselves to promoting amateur softball in the Rochester, Minnesota community. As pioneers and active advocates for women’s softball, Char states that every-thing she was able to accomplish for women’s softball was due to the partnership she and Joe had shared. The growing popularity of slow pitch softball prompted Joe and Char to initiate Adler’s slow-pitch tournament for women in 1967. Little did they know that their tournament would become a premier event in the state! Eight teams competed in the first tournament and it grew to 36 within 5 years. Hundreds of spectators were on hand to watch the champi-onship games at Rochester’s Soldiers Field: such teams as the Avantis, Spooks, Chuck-wagon and Patch of Blue competing for the prestigious championship trophy. Meanwhile, the Alexanders were involved with leadership in other softball endeavors. Earlier, in 1964, they teamed up to organize the Roch-ester Women’s Fast Pitch Softball Association. By 1967, the association had won a bid to host the 1969 women’s state tournament in Roch-ester, the first state tournament to be held in the city. Those state tournaments were played on fields scattered across the city. Joe’s ingenuity and experience in broadcast communications led him to enlist the help of a local ham radio club to relay the information between officials at the various fields. The first radio broadcast of a softball championship game originated from station KWEB at this time, with Joe Alex-ander behind the microphone doing the play by play. In 1974, mainly through Joe and Char’s inno-vation and persistence, the formation of Roch-ester’s first fast pitch softball league for girls in

JIM “CORKY” EBELINGJIM “CORKY” EBELING OwatonnaOwatonna

Corky Ebeling has been involved with softball his entire life. His dad, “Farmer”, played in Owatonna for many years and started taking Corky to the diamonds when he was just a little kid. Corky and his brother Dude started playing 4-H softball for the Meriden Meadowlarks and won the Steele County 4-H Championship six years in a row. The softball bug bit Corky at a young age and he has been hooked ever since. Corky played league softball in Owatonna for several years and then started umpiring, man-aging and coaching the JB Liquor softball team. After JB, Corky took over managing and coaching the Owatonna Eagles beginning in 1980. Corky managed and coached the Eagles team from 1980 to 1989. During that time they won numerous tournaments and also brought home a national championship in 1985. Corky also managed many other teams that included Coors/Steeles, Coors Extra Gold, Steele’s Hit-men, Grandpa Al’s, Bud Ice, Weber’s, Bud Lite, Bud Lite Webers and Owatonna Con-crete. Corky’s teams won numerous local and state championship titles along with a few na-tional tournament championships over the years. Corky has always been involved in managing and coaching ball teams that included base-ball, youth softball and women’s slow pitch. Corky served on the Minnesota Sports Federa-tion board of directors from 1985-1997 earning several Special Recognition Awards for Out-standing Leadership and Service. In 1988 he received the MSF Walt F. Feldbrugge Distin-guished Service Award. He also served as the ASA/USA Softball At-Large Player Represen-tative on the National Softball Council from 1986-1995 and was given an award for Out-standing Leadership and Service. Corky has managed and run many adult and youth softball tournaments that include the Schnowball Tournament, Corky’s Dog Days Classic, Corky and Julie’s Teen Classic and of

course the Earlybird. 29 years ago the Earlybird was run out of a little blue and white wooden shack that was located by diamond three. Corky and Julie, we suspect, sold hot dogs and brats on an electric fry pan and pop out of a cooler. As you know, the tournament has come a long way. Proceeds are donated to the Owatonna Park and Recreation Youth Scholarship Fund that is used to help get kids involved in sports.

Without question, there is no one in the state of Minnesota that has a bigger heart for, or dedica-tion to, the great game of softball than Jim “Corky” Ebeling. It is with great honor that we welcome Jim “Corky” Ebeling to the Minnesota Softball Hall of Fame this evening.

BOB SCZLUBEWSKIBOB SCZLUBEWSKI Little FallsLittle Falls

Nominated by Howard Kazeck

Bob Sczublewski is synonymous with Softball in Central Minnesota.

Bob began softball career in 1959 and played continuously until 1998. The majority of his ca-reer Bob pitched and very rarely missed a game. He played for various teams and won state championships in 1985 & 1995. In addition to winning those two state titles, Bob played on several league and district champions.

Bob’s total commitment to softball off the field is equally impressive. Bob served as league direc-tor for over 35 years in Little Falls. He also um-pired for over 20 years in various leagues and tournaments in central Minnesota. In addition, he managed softball teams for over 30 years.

Bob originally began as the league director with 12 teams and worked diligently to see it grow to 42 teams in the 1980’s. To enhance softball Bob started to keep stats of the league players; they were published in local papers and highlighted on the radio weekly. He established an annual banquet where all awards were presented. The event attracted great attention. Interest contin-ued to grow and with Bob’s devotion and dedica-tion, interest soon led to a game of the week on a local radio station.

With all his softball work and efforts Bob still re-mained a mainstay in other areas of the commu-nity. He is an active member of his local church parish having served on numerous city and church committees for varied events. Bob also served in the U.S. Army andMinnesota National Guard in excess of 20 years.

Personal moments he remembers is when he pitched a no hitter in slow pitch softball. Hitting five home runs in a game before hi-tech bats and balls and playing in a state tournament with three sons on a father-son team.

Clearly there are few people in central Minnesota who have dedicated 40 years plus to enhance softball. His efforts as a player/organizer and love of the sport make Bob Sczublewski a true softball Hall of Famer. We welcome him into the Minnesota Softball Hall of Fame this evening.

DICK HOLDORFDICK HOLDORF WinonaWinona

Nominated by Maynard Johnson / Winona Park & Recreation Department

Richard “Dick” Holdorf is a well known and re-spected, fast pitch and slow pitch umpire for both youth and adults in Winona and the surrounding area. Dick has been an ASA umpire in Winona since 1972 (38 years) minus 3 years (1995-1998) when he moved out of the state. Anyone in the Winona area involved in youth/adult fast pitch or slow pitch softball knows Dick. Dick will always be known for his unique, deep, rough voice when he gives you the “out” call.

The past 38 years Dick has umpired 2 nights a week in the Winona Park & Rec. Adult slow pitch leagues—men/women/co-rec. In 1974 Dick started the Mississippi Valley Umpire’s Associa-tion with over 24 umpires. This association pro-vided umpires for college teams like St. Theresa’s, St. Mary’s, Winona State and Luther in Decorah, Iowa. Dick worked 3 Division 3 Regional College Tournaments, being the Umpire-In-Chief for two of them. This association also provided umpires for various high schools: Cotter High, Winona Senior High, Lewiston, St. Chares, Dover-Eyota, Elgin, Wabasha and Austin. Dick was the president of this association through 1994 when he decided to turn over the reigns to another umpire.

Dick worked numerous MSHSL State Girls Fast Pitch Softball Tournaments. He has worked 2 ASA State/District tournaments per year in Winona as the Umpire In Chief or as an umpire. He also served as the Umpire In Chief or umpire in various sanctioned tournaments in the Winona area.

Dick has worked 5 National tournaments: Major Co-Rec, Men’s A Modified, Men’s Major Modified, Women’s Class A Fast Pitch, and Women’s Major Fast Pitch. In the 70’s-80’s and early 90’s, Dick averaged 250-300 games per season. Dick cur-rently works 2 Park & Rec. Nights and averages 180 weekend games per season.

Prior to umpiring in Winona Dick had plenty of experience both as a player and umpire; he joined the Navy in 1953 at the age of 16 where he played softball for his ship’s team. His first umpir-ing experience came in 1956 when Dick broke 2 fingers and couldn’t throw so his base coach had Dick umpire behind the plate. Dick continued to play and umpire while serving his country in the Navy. He played on various bases and ship’s teams. These teams were very successful. He played in Spain, France, Italy, Turkey, Greece, Ethiopia and Saudi Arabia. During Dick’s Navy career as a player, he broke his wrist and thumb and always went back to umpiring, generally at no pay or $1 per game. Dick is well known for his excellent officiating talents and love for the game of softball. As an aside, Dick has also been a High School and College certified official in other sports over the years: basketball, volleyball, baseball and football. His true love is softball. Dick is a retired postal worker. It will be a sad day when Dick de-cides to hang up his gear. Dick has been and con-tinues to be a true champion in the sport of soft-

Mervin Eischens of St. Leo, Minnesota has never been a quitter. He has been married to his wife Velma for 56 years. He had the same job as an insurance agent for Farmers Union Insur-ance for 57 years; he was mayor of St. Leo for a state record 41 years; he has been an active member of the Canby Rotary with over 30 years of perfect attendance; Mervin is a lifetime mem-ber of the St. Leo American Legion, and he has been serving as adjutant for 43 years with the exception of one year when he was Commander and he is a lifetime member of the Canby VFW. So it comes as no surprise that he showed the same dedication to the sport that he loves - soft-ball. When he served in the Korean War, he played softball while he was on active duty in Japan. He was unable to finish the season when his tour of duty ended, but his team won the championship just after he returned to the U.S. so they sent him the trophy. After he returned to the states he started playing fast pitch softball and then made the transition to slow pitch a few years later. He played, managed and sponsored several softball teams for over 50 years. He pitched until he was 70 years old and continued to manage and occasionally play until he was 75. One of the highlights of Mervin’s career was a year in the early 80’s in which his team won two league championships and several tourna-ments and on the year his teams won over 90 games, a number which was unheard of at that time. Mervin was the pitcher for those teams. Mervin has done much more than just play, manage and sponsor. As Mayor of St. Leo, he was the man responsible for getting approval to build a softball diamond and furnish it with lights so the town could have its own team. Over the years he has played with or coached several relatives, which includes managing and playing with five of his grandsons on the same team. Several players that he introduced to the game still play, as well as some of their children who also had the opportunity to play softball with Mervin. His teams have been fortunate enough to participate in Softball Night at the Dome 5 times. In those 5 trips his teams have raised over $4,000 of the $80,000 total that has bene-fited the Minnesota Special Olympics and Soft-ball Hall of Fame. Last year made their 6th trip in the 20 years of the event. Mervin Eischens is responsible for introducing softball to a community, his family and countless others. And because of his dedication to the sport, and his contributions that have touched so many lives, we welcome him to the Minne-sota Softball Hall of Fame this evening.

Bill Bieloh, friend of ASA Softball, passes

Bill Bieloh, 51, of Walker, Moondance Jam and Soft-ball Complex died unexpect-edly in his sleep on Friday, September 24, 2010. In 1992, Bill and wife Kathy, started the Moondance Jam rock festival which also in-cluded a softball complex that has hosted many ASA district and state softball

tournaments. The Moondance Jam has become the largest rock festival in Minnesota. Bill was a Walker icon. He loved his community and was always generous in his support and promotion of any and all events. He and wife, Kathy, were selected as community champions twice, both as a business and as promoters of Walker. Bill will be missed by the Walker softball community as well as by softball players from around the state.

Stillwell honored at banquet Minnesota ASA loses five Softball Hall of Famers Since the last issue of the ASR and last Hall of Fame Banquet in 2008, five Softball Hall of Famers have passed: Dan Marchio, St. Paul; Ben Binsfield, St. Cloud; Fran “Skinny” Morrisette, St. Paul; and Ralph Leistikow, St. Charles. Dan Marchio, inducted in 1988, played in the St. Paul Classic Leagues for over 26 years, com-peting in 18 state tour-naments. He was known as a great glove man with a very strong, accu-rate arm and great range as a centerfielder. Bill Mobeck, inducted in 1989, placed Harris fast-pitch on the map. He played in 22 state tour-naments, pitching 1,450 games and posting a .750 winning percent-age. He was the heart and soul of every team he played on. Ben Binsfield, inducted in 1987, was known as a goodwill ambassador for the game of softball in the St. Cloud area. He was elected as the first president of the St. Cloud Umpires Association and upon his retirement he became the chief groundskeeper at St. Cloud Whit-ney Fields. He dedicated 50 years to the sport he loved. Fran “Skinny” Morrisette, inducted in 1984 played on nine state championship teams, 10 regional tourna-ments and nine national tournaments. A lifetime .350 hitter, he once pitched 32 consecutive victories. Upon retirement from softball, Fran took up bowling where he is also in the Hall of Fame. Ralph Leistikow, inducted in 2008, was involved in softball for 50 years. He played for 27 years, managed for 11 years, was a league director for 13 years and an umpire for 24 years. In 1971 he organized the first fast-pitch team in St. Charles and now many years later St. Charles is home to a strong eight team men’s fastpitch league.

Don Stillwell, 1997 Hall of Fame inductee, from Austin, receives a Home Run Club plaque for his $500 dona-tion to the Minnesota Softball Hall of Fame from Becky Macken, Minnesota ASA President. Also receiving Home Run Club plaques at the 2010 banquet were Bob McMahon (1995) and Ray Sibley (1984).

MANAKATO — It was a weekend most teams dream of for Preston Merchants Men’s Fast Pitch. They played their best ball of the season and brought home the State “C” Fast Pitch Champion-ship Trophy. The 21 team double elimination tournament was played August 13-15 at the six-field Caswell Park

Complex in North Mankato, MN. The Preston Merchants won their first round game of the tournament shutting out Cold Springs Bank by a score of 5-0. Saturday morning’s game was an eleven inning, three hour battle against a tough Lester’s team. The score was tied 4-4 from the 4th inning until the top of the 11th when some hard luck on defense found the Merchants on the wrong end of a 9-4 score. It sent the team to the loser’s bracket leaving them to come back through the tournament the hard way. Saturday evening they tallied two more wins ver-sus the Gamecocks and RFG of Farmington. The Merchants threw their first pitch on Sunday morning at 9:45am and their last at 7:30pm playing six games in a row and never leaving the field the entire day. Wins were racked up against Gabes, Lester, Granite City and Morell’s to bring them to the championship game. As luck would have it, their opponent from the winner’s bracket was Harley Davidson from their own St. Charles league. The Preston Merchants dug deep and brought everything they had left, and shut out Harley 8-0 in six innings in the first game, then winning the final game of the day by a score of 4-2 to clinch the championship. The key to their success was the well balanced defense and offense played by the entire team. The defense played tight and tough, making out-standing plays and was nearly error-free, committing less than 10 errors in the tournament. On the offensive side, they played a lot of “small ball” working to get on base and move runners around into scoring position each inning. The team’s tournament batting average was .312. Also notable was that the team played the entire contest with just one pitcher, Ryan Scheevel and one catcher, Brett Scheevel. The fact that they are brothers makes that an even more exceptional occurrence. In a conversation with the umpiring team after the tournament, they commented that they didn’t think they had ever seen one pitcher-catcher battery work through an entire tournament like that before. For his gutsy performance, Ryan Scheevel was named State Tournament MVP. The team bestowed Honorary Team MVP to Joe Woellert for suc-cessfully calling 9 of 10 coin tosses for the weekend. The Preston Merchants Fast Pitch team is supported by Preston area business sponsors. Pictures and video of the state tournament action can be seen on the Preston Merchants Fast Pitch Facebook page.

MOUND — It is cliché, but true... it takes good pitching, defense and hitting to win champion-ships. During State Tournament Weekend, J&J Glass had the pitching led by pitchers Tyler Jerde and Robb Schaust, who rotated every other game. Stolen bases were abundant (18). The left side of the defense did not commit an error in seven games via Cory Dehn, Sean Hart-

neck and Tyler Jerde. As a team, J&J hit .457 highlighted by leadoff hitter Dusty Lit-tlefield with an incredible .737 average and 9th hitter Chad Erickson who hit .545. Chad was 4 for 4 in the championship game and Dustin Schaust hit a three run home run to place J&J as Tier II Champs.

MOUND— We played all of our games as a complete team. The girls hit the ball well, collecting 47 hits in four games. Their pitching and defense were the keys to success, nobody stole any bases on us and we only gave up six runs all weekend. The Wild played four tough games versus Springfield, Rochester Hurricanes, Rochester Heat, and in the finals the faced the Huskies of Jackson. The Wild only allowed six runs in four games. Congratulations to the Wild of St. Peter for a great state tournament!

BURNSVILLE — What a game! We could not have asked for a more competitive game with Elm Creek. Our defense was unbeatable and our hitting was strong. It is hard to talk about highlights because there were so many great plays. One bright spot was the 4 for 4 hitting and 5 RBI game Katie Budde had. The pitching of Felicia Le held the Elm Creek bats quiet. It was a total team effort as the girls were totally focused on bringing home the championship.

14A & 16B Northern Nationals, North Mankato, MN 14A & 16B Northern Nationals, North Mankato, MN The weekend of August 5-8 brought exciting competition to the City of North Mankato, MN. The Min-nesota ASA and the City of North Mankato were pleased to host 40 teams from around the northern region in both the 14-Under Class A and the 16-Under Class B divisions. The well-balanced draw of teams created a fun tournament in which teams got an opportunity to play multiple teams from differ-ent states and regions. Thursday, August 5 was the start of pool play. The fourteen 14-Under teams were split into pools of three and four and were able to draw into bracket play based on their final pool position. The 26 16-Under teams were also split into pools of three and four and their final pool standings after Thursday determined where they drew into Friday’s bracket play. Each team had two pool play games. The bracket and pool play were designed in such a way to try to avoid teams playing teams from the same state. Also on Thursday the ASA held opening ceremonies to honor the 40 participating teams, the umpire crew and the city staff. North Mankato Mayor Gary Zellmer spoke and also threw the first pitch. Friday, August 6 marked the start of bracket play. All 40 teams either played one or two games on Friday, which unfortunately left some teams going home Friday afternoon. The weather cooperated and all games were completed. The competition was tough as now teams had the championship title in sight. On Friday night the girls enjoyed an ice cream social and DJ dance party at Spring Lake Park in North Mankato. Thank you to the staff of North Mankato who helped make the event possi-ble. Saturday, August 7 heavy rain and thunderstorms postponed the 9AM start time to a little after the noon hour. Grounds crews worked quickly to get the first round of four fields in top playable condi-tion. The fields were under water only hours before the first round of games started. It turned into a long hot day of fastpitch but all games were completed and closer to naming a champion. Sunday, August 8 with only seven teams remaining in both the 14A and 16B divisions, the day started out hot and humid and ended hot and humid. In the 16B division the Fox River Rush played the St Croix Cougars in the undefeated bracket where Fox River Rush defeated the Cougars 5-4, ad-vancing to the championship game. In the one-loss bracket Central Iowa Impact defeated the IL Pa-triots, 9-5 and then the St Croix Cougars 5-4 to play Fox River Rush in the championship game. Cen-tral Iowa won 7-0 sending the tournament into the necessary “if” game. There Central Iowa won con-vincingly 12-3. Congratulations to the Central Iowa Impact. In the 14-Under division the Orland Park Sparks Red, IL and the MN Sting 96, MN played in the one-loss bracket to face the Originals who had yet to suffer a loss. In a close game the Sting 96 ad-vanced 1-0 to face the Originals of Kansas City, MO. After losing to the Originals earlier in bracket play 5-0, the Sting 96 played a tough championship game but ended up losing 0-1. Congratulations to the Originals of Missouri on a great tournament! Thank you to Steve Riswold, our UIC. Tim Luther, our Assistant UIC. Our dedicated ASA umpires. Lee Cohan, our tournament director. Steve Ketter, Perry Coonce and Tami Morrison from the MN ASA office, Lynette Peterson from North Mankato and Larissa Mrozek from Mankato on a wonderful tournament.

Is proud to be an Official Softball of MSF – ASA Softball

Kate Muehe recently shared her memories about a trip to ASA Nationals - The Big Dance. Here’s her story... On a miserably hot and dusty Sunday in Saint Paul, about ten years ago, my 12U team spent all day clawing our way up through the loser's bracket at the Regional tournament, facing some of the toughest teams in Minnesota and South Dakota for a chance to grab on to one of the two berths to the ASA National tournament in Fresno, Califor-nia. I was thirteen years old, pitching on a community team of talented ball players who have all grown up to be successful young women. We headed into a champion-ship series, needing to beat the opposing team twice to comply with double-elimination tournament standards. And we did. And I don't know that anyone except those 12 youthful hearts on the field really thought we were go-ing to pull it out. All the excitement of our hard-fought victory was tempered by the discussion that maybe we wouldn't go to Nationals. Not because we weren't qualified ball players or hadn't earned that spot, but because maybe some people "didn't want to." As a young adult, I now better understand some of the arguments against going to Nationals; it could be expensive, taking a week away from home is disruptive, and you might get there and not win a single game. But at that point in my life, I had never worked harder for some-thing or wanted something as badly as I wanted to go to ASA Nationals. I can remember as clear as any memory sitting with my teammates on a grassy hill that day, sun burnt faces and stinky feet, anxiously waiting for our par-ents' decision. Our season was about to end or get a whole lot cooler. Three weeks later we were a gaggle of smiles, braided hair, and girl magazines on a flight to California, thanks to a group of parents who respected what we wanted and knew that this was going to be an amazing experience. There are so many things I could write about; I can re-member almost everything about the week we were spent out there. I had a sinking suspicion that our team wasn't going to be real place contenders out there- facing elite club teams and athletes who played a lot more during longer seasons than our Minnesota weather allows, but opening ceremonies and the events that played out on this national stage made me so proud as a young athlete and like I was part of this very talented community of young women. We had some big wins and some big losses at ASA Na-tionals. We played 5 games and won 2 of them (one in pool play and one in a bracket). We played a winning night game under the brightest lights and cheered so loud we all lost our voices. We had a loss so brutal we were run-ruled by the third inning and as we struggled to just get out of the last inning the entire outfield and half the in-field players were in tears.

On about the third day we were out there, our car was broken into in the parking lot of our hotel and my glove, jersey, cleats, and pins were stolen. I was heartbroken. As a lefty, it is exceedingly difficult to find a glove to bor-row or a nice one to buy in Fresno. But a maintenance volunteer let me borrow his left-handed glove (which to this day may be the most beautiful and softest glove I have ever played a game in) and a girl from the Eagan 12U team (the only other MN team out there) let me bor-row her shoes until I could find new ones. But what I really had been most distraught about was all those pins I had collected during opening ceremonies and the early days from teams around the country that were totally lost. While I was playing the rest of our games, siblings of my teammates went out and collected pins and when other players heard what had happened, they were more than willing to help me rebuild my collection. Pins may sound kind of trivial to a lot of adults, and sometimes when I just think back about them now, they are just trinkets, but as I sort through and pack up my stuff as I embark on my first "real job" and getting my first "real place," I hold on to that book of pins and know I could never part with them. And I still have a framed photo of that team after our big win under the lights, cheesing for the camera. I have lost touch with most of those girls, save the occasional Facebook update, but on that night those were the best friends I could have had. I wasn't a bad ball-player and I went on to teams that placed at state and regionals and went to some of the other 'national' tournaments, which were really just larger regional tournaments. Did we typically place better in those tournaments? Absolutely. But for some reason, sharing 33rd place with 16 teams around the country in Fresno still means more and is more memorable than the 2nd’s and 3rd’s I took in Iowa and Wisconsin tourna-ments. It's undoubtedly about more than winning and losing at ASA Nationals. I never again played for a team that qualified for the ASA Nationals and thus am doubly grateful for the parents and coaches that chose to support us that year. It was our first and last chance at an experience of a lifetime. And even though we ended up on the bottom half of average, you couldn't have convinced a single one of us that we weren't great or didn't deserve to be out there. Some years later I went on to coach 12U fastpitch and my experience at ASA Nationals absolutely influenced how I viewed winning and losing when I was attempting to impart good sportsmanship and pride in a game well played (even if lost) on my girls. I have since traded my jersey for a button up and the field for a cubicle, although the years on those dusty fields never really leave you.

U.S. Olympic Committee recognizes USA Softball PrU.S. Olympic Committee recognizes USA Softball Proogramgram

333888 Summer/FallSummer/FallSummer/Fall

September 8, 2010 OKLAHOMA CITY —The USA Softball program continued an impressive streak of recognition from the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) with the 2010-11 USA Softball Junior Women’s National Team placing second in the August 2010 Team of the Month contest, the USOC announced today. The team’s third baseman Lauren Chamberlain (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) also placed third in the Female Athlete of the Month category. The August 2010 honors are in addition to USA Softball outfielder Alissa Haber (Newark, Calif.) winning the June 2010 Female Athlete of the Month award, the Women’s National Team winning the June 2010 Team of the Month award, shortstop Natasha Watley (Irvine, Calif.) winning the July 2010 Female Athlete of the Month award and the Women’s National Team placing third in the July 2010 Team of the Month voting. “The future of USA Softball has never been brighter than it is today. We are incredibly proud of everything that our program has done throughout the summer and congratulate our athletes for their accomplishments,” said Amateur Softball Association Executive Director Ron Radigonda. “In June, our Women’s National Team won an unprecedented ninth World Championship and took their fourth World Cup of Softball title in July. The 17 members of our Junior Women’s National Team, each wearing the uniform for the first time, continued that dis-play of excellence by going undefeated in the Junior Women’s World Championship Qualifier last month. Their victories along with the rec-ognition from the fans and the U.S. Olympic Committee proves that even without the Olympic Games, softball continues to be the marquee summer sport. We’re already looking forward to 2011.” The nominees from USA Softball were the only junior level athletes to place in the top three for the month. The USA Water Polo’s Women’s National Team took the top team honor by winning the 2010 FINA World Cup gold medal for the first time in 31 years with a 6-3 defeat of Australia. Chamberlain was topped by Paralympian Allison Jones (Colorado Springs, Colo.), who won the Para-Cycling World Champion-ship, and USA Water Polo’s goalkeeper Betsey Armstrong (Ann Arbor, Mich.), who had 58 saves at the World Cup. The Junior Women’s National Team went 9-0 at the III Pan American Championship (18-Under) in Bogota, Colombia. After waiting at the stadium through a rain delay of more than seven hours, the Americans topped Canada 3-1 in the Championship Game, earning the Gold Medal and a berth to the International Softball Federation (ISF) Junior Women’s World Championship, December 2011, in Cape Town, South Af-rica. Earlier on Championship Day, the team topped Puerto Rico 6-1 in the semifinals to advance. Overall, six of the nine games were run rule victories. Four victories were shutouts. Team USA outscored opponents 77-7, while outhitting competitors 91-19. The team, comprised of mostly high school seniors, combined for a .672 slugging percentage with 23 doubles, seven tri-ples and three home runs. The Red, White and Blue batters were walked 25 times while striking out only 21 times. The team was 38 for 43 in stolen bases, led by Madison Shipman (Valencia, Calif.) with nine. The five member pitching staff had a combined ERA of .73. Dallas Escobedo (Glendale, Ariz.) and Lauren Haeger (Phoenix, Ariz.) led in the circle, both reaching a 3-0 record. Escobedo struck out 23 and allowed five hits and a run in her 14.1 innings played across five games. Hae-ger, who had 20 of the team’s 71 strikeouts, pitched 18 innings in five games. She gave up nine hits and two earned runs. While a team effort led to Team USA's success in Bogota, Chamberlain was one of the standout players, earning USA Softball's nomination for Female Athlete of the Month. She played in each of the nine games, starting eight times at third base. In her first game wearing the Red, White and Blue, she a home run, laying the groundwork for an outstanding offensive performance in the tournament. “The game against Colombia was the first time it really hit me that I was wearing USA across my chest,” Chamberlain said. “Stepping on the field with all my friends that I've either played with or against was a feeling I can't really describe. We were no longer playing for ourselves. We were playing for something so much bigger. Winning the Gold Medal was something I've dreamed of since I was little. The medal I was wearing around my neck represented the millions of girls around the country. I had never felt so grateful.” She went 16 for 25 (.640) at the plate with 11 runs scored and 13 RBI. With her 11 extra base hits (seven doubles, two triples and two home runs), she accumulated a slugging percentage of 1.320, by far the highest in Bogota. She went a perfect 6 for 6 in stolen bases, tying Hallie Wilson (North Tustin, Calif.) for second most on the team. Members of the team are Ally Carda (Elk Grove, Calif.); Chamberlain; Cheyenne Cordes (Fairfield, Calif.); Escobedo; Amber Freeman (Lakewood, Calif.); Erin Gabriel (Poland, Ohio); Chelsea Goodacre (Temecula, Calif.); Haeger; Kylee Lahners (Laguna Hills, Calif.); Desti-nee Martinez (Corona, Calif.); Shelby Pendley (Albuquerque, N.M.); Kourtney Salvarola (Arnold, Md.); Shipman; Cheyanne Tarango (Anaheim Hills, Calif.); Nyree White (Eugene, Ore.); Wilson; and Chelsea Zgrabik (Nokomis, Fla.). “Congratulations to the Junior Women’s National Team, including Lauren Chamberlain, for being recognized by the U.S. Olympic Committee as some of the top athletes in the country. The honors are truly deserved,” coach Karen Johns (Starkville, Miss.). “I am excited to see what this team will accomplish next year at the Junior Women’s World Championship and beyond. They are incredible young women.” Suzy Brazney (Huntington Beach, Calif./head coach Golden West College), Stacy Iveson (Prescott, Ariz./head coach Yavapai College) and Pat Murphy (Northport, Ala./head coach Alabama) joined Johns in Colombia as assistant coaches. Joe Salvatore (Monroe Township, N.J./coach New Jersey Breakers) is the volunteer assistant coach for the Junior Women’s National Team.

2010 marked the 22nd Annual MSF Youth Baseball State Champion-ships and it was another successful year. It all took place over the weekend of July 23-25. Thousands of participants from teams across the state were able to see how they measured up against a competitive field. Congratula-tions and thank you to all players, coaches, and parents. A special thanks to the tournament hosts who made it all possible. State Tournament hosts included: Rosemount Traveling Baseball, Buffalo Baseball Association, Owatonna Huskie Bullpen, St. Cloud Travel Baseball, Marshall Youth Baseball Association, Austin Youth Baseball, and Burnsville Baseball Boosters. Another thanks to our umpires in chief who provided our tournaments with qualified um-pires: Tom Lattery, Dan Feigum, Mark Arjes, Tim Pratt, Jeff Moberg, Josh Kunze, and Gary Gibson. Enjoy your fall and winter seasons and we will see you next year! Check the web site this December for qualifier and state tournament host applications.
