    Strategy

    Atlas Copco has strong positions globally in most seg-

    ments where it oers products and solutions. The Group

    concentrates on strengthening its position within

    segments where it has core competence.

    To reach its vision First in MindFirst in Choice ,

    the Group has three overall strategic directions:

    Organic and acquired growth

    Growth should primarily be organic, supported by

    selected acquisitions. Growth can be achieved by:

    geographic expansion, by opening additional

    customer centers

    deeper market penetration, by intensied training

    or service and sales personnel

    increasing the scope of supply

    acquiring more channels to the market, for example

    more brands or more distributor channels

    continuously launching new products for existingapplications

    To be a market leader demands continuous substantial

    investment in research and development. Customers

    should be oered products and solutions that increase

    their productivity and reduce their cost. New products

    and solutions should provide extra benets for the

    customer compared to the existing products or to the

    competition.

    Strengthened aftermarket

    The atermarket comprises accessories, consumables,

    parts, service, maintenance and training. A strengthened

    atermarket oers the Group a stable revenue stream,

    high growth potential and optimized business processes.

    In addition, the product development organization gets

    a better understanding o the customers needs and

    preerences.

    Financial targetsAtlas Copco Group has dened nancial targets that will

    create and continuously increase shareholder value. The

    overall objective is to grow while achieving a return on

    capital employed that always exceeds the Groups average

    total cost o capital.

    Structure

    The Group is organized in three separate, ocused but still

    integrated business areas, each operating through divisions.

    The role othe business area is to develop, implement

    and ollow up the objectives and strategy within its business.

    The divisions are separate operational units, each

    responsible to deliver growth and prot in line with strate-

    gies and objectives set by the business area. The divisions

    generally conduct business through customer centers,

    distribution centers and product companies.

    Common service providers internal or external have

    been established with the mission to provide services

    aster, to a higher quality and at a lower cost, thus allow-

    ing the divisions to ocus on their core businesses.

    Processes

    Group-wide strategies, processes and shared best

    practices are collected in the database The Way We Do

    Things. The processes covered are nance, controlling and

    accounting, legal, people management, crisis management,

    insurance, communications and branding, inormation

    technology, Group standards, Business Code o Practice

    and environmental management. The inormation is stored

    electronically and is available to all employees. Although

    most of the documentation is self-explanatory, training on

    how to implement the processes is provided to managers on

    a regular basis. Wherever they are located, Atlas Copco

    employees are expected to operate in accordance with the

    principles and guidelines provided.

    People

    Atlas Copcos growth is closely related to how the Group

    succeeds in being a good employer, attracting, developing

    and keeping qualied and motivated people. With aglobal business conducted through numerous companies,

    Atlas Copco works with continuous competence develop-

    ment, knowledge sharing and in implementing the core

    The business Revenues and operating margin

    The Compressor Technique business areadevelops, manufactures, markets andservices oil-free and oil-injected stationaryair compressors, portable air compressors,oil and gas boosters, gas and process com-pressors, turbo expanders, generators, airtreatment equipment and air managementsystems. The business area has in-house

    resources for basic development in its coretechnologies and offers specialty rentalservices.

    Development, manufacturing andassembly are concentrated in Belgium,with other units situated in Brazil, China,France, Germany, Great Britain, India, Italy,the Netherlands, New Zealand and theUnited States.

    The Construction and Mining Techniquebusiness area develops, manufactures,markets and services rock drilling tools,

    underground rock drilling rigs for tunnelingand mining applications, surface drilling rigs,loading equipment, exploration drillingequipment, construction tools and roadconstruction equipment.

    The business area has its principalproduct development and manufacturingunits in Sweden, Germany and the UnitedStates, with other units in Australia, Austria,Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Finland,France, India, Japan and South Africa.

    The Industrial Technique business areadevelops, manufactures and markets high-quality industrial power tools, assemblysystems and aftermarket products andservices. It serves the needs of industrialmanufacturing, such as the automotiveand aerospace industries, general industrialmanufacturing, and maintenance andvehicle service.

    The business area has its productdevelopment and manufacturing units inSweden, China, France, Hungary, Italy

    and Japan. The business area also hasassembly system application centers inseveral markets.
