MATTHEW 5:1416As we read the Bib le we wil l note

^ ^ at least three expressions concerning the light of the world. Firstaud foreiuost we note t ha t Jesus isthe Jjight of Jbhe world. Secondly,wc note that "the Bible is the lightthat lights the paths of men."Thirdly, we see that Christians arca light in the world. I t is thisthird reference to the light withwhich we a re concerned in this a rt icle.Proverbs 4:19 tells us that spiritually the world is in darkness. Theworld is groping about trying to findits way. There is no light in thesinner's world, whether they live inAmerica, Japan or any other country. They are as the blind-always in thedark. Jesus came as a light lo shinein the darkness. As we witness forChrist our light is a reflected lightfor our power is not from ourselvesbut from Christ, the source of ourlight.

I f we do not burn oiir lights,Christ will hot have any witnesseshere on this ear th. I t does not matter what the station or position of aperson is for we are but as candlesticks. A candle will give off lightif it is setting in a small dish orin an elaborate can dle holder. Thestrength of the light is not determinedby the holder but by the potentialityof the light. I f one differs fromanother in radiance i t is bccause heis closer to the ChrlEft a nd th ere fo reis more brilliant. A poor man in asmall church may be shining brighter

July 1957. ' than his minfsjter or the mi'Wpnar-ies in far aW^y lands. One must constantly talve heed lest he bo as a. spindly candle in a fancy candelabra. There cf^u be notrue shining without burjiiiig. The caudle burns short

as the Jight . shines. Tlic stronger. the light the more the candle is con-; sumned. We can not expect to workI for God without expending effort. On the coast of Norway is a lignt-: house where a keeper lived with histwo children. One day he went tothe distant shore for provisions^ A: Storm arose, and he was unable to return, The time for lighting the lampcame, and Mary, the elder child, said to her little brother, "We mustlight the lamp, Willie." "How canwc?" asked Willie, "Wc aren't bigenough." But the two.children climl>-ed the long, narrow stairs, to the tower where, the lamp was kept. Marypulled Up a chair and tried to reachthe lamp in the great reflector; itwas too high. Groping down thestairs, she ascended again with asmall oil lamp in her hand. "I canhold this up," she said to her littlebrother. She cl imbed on the chairagain, but still the reflector wasjust beyoud her reach. "Get down."said Willie . " I know what we can do "She jumped down, and he stretchedhis little body across the chair. *'Standon me," he said. And she stood onthe little fellow as he lay acrossthe chair. She raised" the lamp high, and its light shone far out acrossthe water. Holding it first with one-hand and then with the other, to resther l it t le arms. She called down toher brother. "Does it hurt you, Willie?" "Of course, it hurts," "But keepthe light burning."Willie was willing to sacrifice tokeep the light burning. With millions

yet in darkness let us rally to meetthe hindrances with the same spirit aslittle Will i f r . - -Whether i t be sel f-prldo, time, talent 'or money are wewilling to give to keep the lightburning?

Acts 26Paul, at the time he wrote this wasin prison. He was waiting to be sent

to Rome where he would be able to 'be tried before Caesar. In the meantime, King Agrippa visited Felix andhearing of Paul, desired to hear wha t =Paul had to say. Therefore, Paul was 'given the opportunity to speak before 'the King. Paul must have been a goodspeaker,He told about hispreviouslifeas a persecutor, the appearance ofJesus to him and his life following theappearace. He closed his talk withthese words,"^'King Agrippa, believ-est thou the prophets? I know thatthou believeth." In answer to this theKing, perhaps with his head bowed 'and in a low voice, answered j "Almostthou persuadest me to be a Christ ian."

I doubt if there can be found in theEnglish language any sadder wordsthan those that the King spoke. ' 'Almost persuaded" is a very sad state for"-''one to be in. Here is a person whoknows that he should become a Christian but he does not. Surely he is in aprecarious position. That person isworse oft* now than he was before heever heard of the gospel of Christ. Hereis a person racing head long into thefu ture with no concern for the inevitable end. He may realize that thereis a place of punishment yet he rejectsthe only way that there is of escapingthis punishment. Putting aside the salvation that is in Christ is nothing morethan negligence. The girl wlio worksfor us, Miss Etsuko Onoda, has

September .I967been under conviction for some timeyet she will not make her stand forChrist Each tfme that salvation isdelayed it becomes harder to accept,lo say ''no" /time and time againmerely makes it easier to say ''no"all the time. Many think that thereare three choibcsas to salvation. Theseare ' yes," "no"and ''later." Certainlythere are the two choices, "Yes" and' but, as to the third, it is doutfulif it can be. said to be a choice."Later" is tantamount to saying "no.**It. is hard to, think of any reasonwhy one would put oft' salvation 01^reject salvation when he knows thatit is for his own good. One of thereasons for putting it ofF is that theyreceive pleasure from sin. They wouldrather enjoy the pleasures here todaythan they would eternity with God.During the meeting at Taisho, oneyoung man, after the services, said thathewas not interested inthepleasure ofthe future lifehe was interested inwhatwould make himhappywhile on

the earth. Here in Japan oppositionfrom friends, family, etc will tend tokeep people from stepping out forChris t .One man of some Christian background, who had attended servicesfor some time, caine late one evening requesting baptism.
