TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION As the Roman Empire shattered and collapsed, the bishops were the people best equipped to catch the falling stones. In the West (that’s us), they sought to stabilize society by weaving a structure of laws and courts to uphold the rights and dignity of married couples in a chaotic world. The bishops in the East had a different approach, even allowing the dissolu-tion of marriages in certain cases. To an extent, the bishops took a measure of control away from the fathers of families in order to provide pastoral care for those who suffered most in the social collapse: women and children. In the West, much of the marriage law was contained in the “penitential books” the bishops devised to regulate the lives of public sinners. In the seventh century, Theodore of Canterbury’s penitential book said that he had the power to give consent to remarriage in the case of a poor fellow whose wife had been carried off by the Vikings. If the Vikings subsequently brought her back, she could remarry, too! No bishop ever made peace with divorce, but there was never a time when the pastoral concern of the church was not struggling with how to care for people in unhappy situations.—Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

mission of spreading the Word of our Lord. May God bless you all. —Fr. Paul, Pastor

What we know and understand as Church more or less begins with today’s Gospel reading from St. Luke. Jesus calls His first disciples — His first Apostles. Luke tells us of the miracle that occurred for St. Peter and the others in their fishing boat. At the Lord’s command, they cast their nets after a time of catching nothing, and “they caught a great number of fish.” Note Peter’s reaction, however. He falls to his knees and

implores Jesus, “Depart from me Lord, for I am sinful man.” St. Peter is astonished and amazed, and he is, quite frankly, afraid of what he has just experienced. We may sometimes react to the Lord’s calling in a similar way. It is a bit overwhelm-ing and frightening to come to the realization that we, too, are called, and that the Lord has expectations of us. Yet, this is how what we know as the Church began. It commenced with Jesus calling simple fishermen according to our Gospel. These, of course, then devel-oped into twelve, then hundreds, then thousands, and now millions upon millions of those called to be disciples. We are among that throng. When Luke speaks of “following,” he is talking about discipleship. We are called to be stewards and disciples, but are we willing to “leave everything and follow Him?”

THE ANNUAL MINISTRIES APPEAL

The AMA is upon us. Next weekend at all Masses there will be information on the 2016 campaign and the many ministries the AMA supports across the diocese. Thank you for your continued support.

Carmel Mission Book Club News The Book Club is reading and discussing The Betrothed, considered Italy’s greatest novel and a masterpiece of world literature, as well as a favor-ite of Pope Francis. Set in Lombardy (now Tuscany in northern Italy) in the 1600’s, and recently retrans-lated to modern English. The novel weaves issues of faith, justice, power, and truth into a powerful clas-sic. This is a masterwork by Alessandro Manzoni. The Book Club meets each Saturday at 2pm in MacMahon. All are welcome to attend and join in the discussion. It isn’t necessary to attend every session. Call Deacon Bill at 646-0358 for more information.

DOCENT CORNER Ever wonder who these saints are in some of these 200+ year old paintings? There is a painting located in the right rear of the church with a female saint floating on a cloud. This is St. Vibiana, a 3rd Century Roman virgin and martyr. For nearly 120 years her name was attached to the Catholic cathedral in Los Angeles, and today her tomb is in the crypt of the new Cathedral in Los Angeles. But all we really know about her is that she was a Roman martyr. Early in 1851, workmen found an extensive network of unexplored catacombs near the Appian Way and discovered a sepulcher of a certain "Vibiana”. They uncovered the skeleton of a young woman, appar-ently put to death in a violent fashion as well as some religious articles. There is no record of her life and martyrdom in the book of martyrs. The Pope had her proclaimed a saint and gave her relics to the newly consecrated Bishop of Monterey-Los Angeles, Thaddeus Amat y Brusi, with the express stipulation that a cathedral be erected in her honor. The newly discovered remains of St. Vibiana were removed from the Catacombs of Rome and, after temporarily reposing in a church in Santa Barbara, were moved to a gilt and plate glass sarcophagus located in a niche in the newly constructed Cathedral of St. Vibiana in Los Angeles (1876). The bishop had numerous paintings made of St. Vibiana by an unknown 19th century artist and distributed them to churches throughout the diocese. Our painting is one of those so it is not a mission era painting, however, an identical copy also hangs in Mission Santa Ines in Solvang and at Mission San Luis Obispo. In earthquake spelled the end for the Cathedral. The diocese built a new Cathedral and in 2002, the stained glass and sarcophagus from the old St. Vibiana's were placed in the mausoleum crypt of the new Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. St. Vibiana is the patroness of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles where she is honored with a memorial feast on September 1st. One of her relics is entombed in the sepulchral cavity of both the main altar and the Lady of Bethlehem altar at the Mission.

An organ concert is scheduled for Thursday, February 25, 2016, in the Basilica at 6:00 p.m. Sponsored by the Monterey chapter of the California So-ciety of Professional Engineers, this is a

fundraising event for the repair and restoration of the basilica organ. The concert also features Dr. Laura Anderson, soprano and Owen Miyoshi, trumpet. A short talk will be made regarding phase 2 of the Mission’s restoration and seismic retrofit program. There is no charge for the event; donations are accepted at the door. Please join us for this evening of wonderful music.

HAVING A HEART FOR MERCY: Thoughts from JSS in response to Pope Francis

As part of our Schoolwide curriculum this year, students have spent a little time thinking and writ-ing about what it means to be merciful. Here are some ”elementary” examples of living mercy; there are applications for all of us as well. Perhaps these brief thoughts will make a timely medi-tation as we enter the holy season of Lent this week.

To me mercy means showing forgiveness to those who have hurt you and your feelings. Sometimes you have to pray to God and ask him for help. They may not deserve it, but it’s always good to forgive.

To me mercy means to give undeserved forgiveness toward someone when you have the power and choice to punish them.

One way to show mercy is to help people in need and help your family by doing what you are told.

To me mercy means to forgive like Jesus forgave us, to be loving and caring, to treat others the way you would like to be treated.

Mercy means we show forgiveness to others when they have hurt our feelings or not been kind. Jesus always taught people to show mercy.

One way to show mercy to others is to forgive people with whom you are angry. You can also show mercy by accepting someone’s apology. When you forgive someone, you can show an act of kindness like making a card. We JSS students are encouraged to show mercy every-day just like Jesus would want.

Pope Francis' Prayer for the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy

Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: "If you knew the gift of God!" You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed en-thusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the op-pressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy, you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. —Amen
