Ten years. Two hundred fifty area women. Donations totaling $450,000 to help women and girls in central Indiana. Now those are some impressive stats. It’s all about women owning their own businesses, learning how they can give back to their communities and then doing it!

You’re probably familiar with the Women’s Fund. If not, it was founded in 1996 and is a special interest fund of the Central Indiana Community Foundation. Its mission is threefold: one, to be the expert resource for researching, compiling and communicating issues impacting women and girls in central Indiana; two, to create options and opportunities for women and girls by awarding grants to organizations who serve them; and three, to engage and educate current and potential women donors.

That third mission is being accomplished, in a big way, through the Women’s Fund OPTIONS Program. OPTIONS is a philanthropic education program geared toward women ages 25 to 45 who want to find out more about the needs of area women and girls and then do their part to help. It’s a year-long program involving a class of 20 women who meet once a month. They participate in classroom sessions and site visits to organizations that serve women and girls. Each participant makes a contribution of at least $250, and at the end of the year, the group works together to distribute the funds as they see fit. But it doesn’t stop there. Each year means another group of 20 entrepreneurial and influential women sets out to give back to their communities in ways that meet area needs and mesh with individual passions.

Jennifer Pope Baker is director of the Women’s Fund of Central Indiana and is responsible for all aspects of the multi-million dollar endowment. She is also involved on a national level with planning and presentation for the Women’s Funding Network. She was named an Indianapolis Business Journal Forty Under 40 recipient in 2002.

“I think women are seeking ways to engage in their

communities in a thoughtful and meaningful way, and it’s clear our OPTIONS participants want to become strategic philanthropists,” Jennifer said. “I have been with the Women’s Fund for more than 12 years and I am thankful for the privilege of helping donors find joy in their giving.”

Jennifer says the program educates the class about current women’s issues and needs, as well as organizations that serve those needs, and then guides participants through the development of a strategic personal giving plan. She says there are significantly more women currently seeking to participate in OPTIONS than the program can accommodate,

a true sign of its success and the “high-quality experience our donors have with the Women’s Fund.”

“OPTIONS really opened my eyes to the needs of our community,” said Kari Strolberg, owner of Eventful Marketing Solutions. “It’s one thing to read about an organization or a particular issue affecting women and girls. It’s another

Story by Neal Moore | Photo by Brenda Staples Photography

At Purdue University he was an All America quarterback, Big Ten MVP, and a finalist for the Heisman Trophy. He played quarterback 11 years in the NFL, including two stints with the Indianapolis Colts, and earlier this year was enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame. Mark Herrmann knows a little something about physical fitness and success. “My whole life I’ve understood that it’s best to be in good physical shape, and to compete,” said the onetime Carmel High School quarterback. “That’s what I’ve tried to do since second grade.”

Today, he’s still on message, helping kids understand the importance of exercise and healthy eating. Herrmann, 51 and a consultant to St. Vincent Health, is responsible for promoting Project 18, a childhood obesity initiative aimed at students in grades 3-5 to educate them about risk factors associated with childhood obesity. “This is a critical age in the development of healthy eating habits,” explained Herrmann. “And, I want kids to pull away from sitting and watching TV and playing video games, and to understand that they don’t have to be a great athlete to be active.”

Oh, and Herrmann has a like-minded colleague you might be familiar with – a fellow named Peyton Manning. “Childhood obesity is a problem that Peyton is passionate about helping to solve,” said Herrmann, who accompanies the Indianapolis Colts star on classroom visits.

Project 18 is affiliated with Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital and was developed in association with Ball State University and Marsh Supermarkets. The program encourages holistic health and good eating habits. “Obviously Peyton’s name carries a lot of weight,” said Herrmann, no pun intended. “He really is passionate about kids making right choices to be healthy and active.”

The 18-week curriculum is a big hit, with more then 300 elementary schools across the state participating. Teachers receive binders filled with materials that they incorporate into classroom instruction. Kids are tested before instruction begins, and again afterward to determine measurable results. South Grove Intermediate School in Beech Grove was selected as Project 18’s first challenge winner, earning a $2,500 award and a school visit from Manning.

“Peyton’s been great to work with,” said Herrmann. “He obviously has a very busy schedule, but he makes the time. We’re trying to affect students, and in turn, their families by generating a tidal wave of good health habits.”

Herrmann understands that the program’s success will be judged on its outcome. “This fits right in with St. Vincent’s focus on preventative medicine, where the hope is that by making informed choices at a young age kids might just fend off health-related problems down the road.”

Schools and teachers interested in learning more about Project 18 should visit www.project18.stvincent.org, or call 317-338-KIDS (5437).

Ingredients:

1 can of Pillsbury Refrigerated Classic Pizza Dough

1 package of skinless turkey sausage (Eckrich Hardwood

Smoked)

Sauerkraut (either in jar or can; Bavarian style with caraway

seed used here)

1 package of reduced fat (2% milk) shredded cheddar

cheese

½ cup coarse ground mustard

¼ cup light mayonnaise

2 tablespoons honey

Olive oil blended with preferred seasonings (garlic salt and

Tuscan mill herbs used here)

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Spray cookie sheet with non-stick cooking spray. On a cutting board, cut sausage in half down the middle and

then in half again. Cut into about 3 inch segments. Next, open can of pizza dough and spread out onto large surface or cutting board. Cut

about a 3.5 × 3.5 inch piece of dough. Place individual piece of sausage near upper left hand corner of dough square. Add desired amount of

cheese and/or sauerkraut on top of sausage. If you prefer, make them with just sausage and dough. They are still great this way! Then wrap or

roll dough so that sausage stays in center, going from top left corner horizontally down to the other lower right hand corner.* Place completed

roll onto prepared cookie sheet. Bake for about 20 minutes and then pull out of oven. Brush tops with seasoned olive oil.

Return to oven for about 5 minutes or until golden brown.

Makes approximately 19 servings.

*Please Note: As you get toward the end of the dough, you may notice that it is more difficult to form 3.5 inch squares. That’s okay.

You can wrap any shape piece of dough around the sausage as long as it covers most of it.

Honey Mustard Dipping Sauce

In a small bowl, combine coarse ground mustard, light mayonnaise and honey. Mix well. Serve with a spoon on the side.

Makes about 6 to 8 servings.

Bethlehem Lutheran Church is a vibrant Christian fellowship located in the heart of Carmel. I recently had the opportunity to speak with the pastor of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Reverend George Ferch, about the history, mission, and heart of this Carmel church.

This congregation has been long time members of the community of Carmel. Pastor Ferch shares a bit of their history, “The congregation was named after the earlier name of Carmel. Ten families from the area wanted to reach out into rapidly growing Hamilton County. A recent graduate of the seminary arrived in the summer of 1991 and began worship services in the old Carmel Library.” He continues, “As the congregation grew the members moved into an industrial park near downtown and then to Smokey Row Elementary near the site of their recently purchased property.” Bethlehem Lutheran Church has a commitment to the community of Carmel and that is evident by their willingness to remain and stay connected to the community.

Bethlehem Lutheran Church is more than just a building. The staff and members of Bethlehem have a deep conviction to “reach out to the souls of Carmel and surrounding communities without diminishing what God’s Word says about sin, and not compromising the good news that Jesus Christ is the only way to heaven.” This mission is played out in many ways. Pastor Ferch explains, “Bethlehem seeks to be a good neighbor and active member of the community. We support organizations like the Carmel Chamber of Commerce. Our members gather food and toys annually for a local charity. The congregation makes our building available for medical services such a flu shots and testing for various conditions.” It’s obvious that this community of believers is making a difference in Carmel.

One of the unique ministries of Bethlehem Lutheran Church is the Little Town of Bethlehem Early Childhood Ministry (LTOB). Pastor Ferch explains, “The five day a week preschool for two to four year olds includes Bible stories and educational activities. LTOB has touched many children and families over the last ten years.” LTOB is unique compared to other preschools in the area in regard to its size. It is a smaller preschool with a limit of twelve children a day. This allows personal attention from their teacher and her assistants. It also encourages the children to have closer interaction with new friends. They have enjoyed working with children from a large variety of ethnic backgrounds, and also have welcomed children with hearing and speech needs who have been served by community educational professionals. This works well in the smaller setting. For more information about LTOB, please visit www.bethlehem-luth.org.

As the Holy Week approaches, Bethlehem Lutheran Church will be hosting Wednesday evening Lenten Worship at 7:00 p.m. for six weeks starting on March 9, Ash Wednesday. Bethlehem Lutheran Church invites individuals attending the service to a soup and salad supper at 6:15 p.m..

Pastor Ferch and the members of Bethlehem Lutheran Church are “ready to welcome you and your family with the love of Christ.” You can visit them online at www.bethlehem-luth.org or in person at 13225 Illinois Street in Carmel.
