Proud to Continue

the 100-Year-Old Tradition of

World-Class Service in

Luxury Real Estate.

IN A period when we are witnessing thediminution and demise of scores of newspa-pers, it is refreshing to see the Carmel PineCone celebrating its hundredth birthday.

I am not a real newspaperman but I playone on this page. Yet I have been associatedwith newspapers from my earliest years.

I came to this column-writing thing latein life. However, I was fortunate to grow upin an age when we were more dependent onnewspapers for information than from anyother media source. My hometown, Buffalo,N.Y., supported two daily papers, theEvening News, and the morning Courier-

Express.I have an early memory of my father tak-

ing me to a coffee shop in downtown Buffalowhere several copies of the morning newspa-per were pinned to a corkboard. Patronsstood at high counters reading the paper. They moved to a different station to read adifferent section of the paper while theysipped their morning brew and engaged indark-roasted conversations with theircronies.

A paper route provided me with the work-ing capital that gave me spending at a timewhen children rarely got allowances fromtheir parents.

My paper route also made me the soleproprietor of my own business. I deliveredthe papers, collected the subscription fee,and paid the route manager for the papers.Collections were a time consuming process.I collected at dinnertime when most cus-tomers were home. After they paid me Ipunched the date indicated on the collectioncard, then punched the corresponding dateon my duplicate card.

A subscription cost 24 cents per week. Most people gave me 30 cents but few let mekeep the change. I had a coin changer that Iwore on my belt and a McGill Hand punchwith a clippings receptacle. Actually, I hadfour of them that punched heart, club, spades, and diamond shaped holes so thecustomers never knew which one I’d be

knowing that I am a part of it.The Pine Cone is small compared to large

metropolitan dailies. Yet, its voice is no lessauthoritative. When I open it my anticipationis as great as when I was reading the SanFrancisco Chronicle or the Los Angeles

Extra, extra read all about it – The Pine Cone turns 100using. Yes, some of the same people whowouldn’t tip me six cents were not beyondpunching their cards and telling me they hadalready paid.

Later on I hawked newspapers on streetcorners like those irrepressible kids in 1930sB movies. Papers were up to 7 cents then —more profit, as people gave me a dime andlet me keep the change, mostly because I wasmoving away from them as quickly as possi-ble.

So I suppose you can say newspaperswere in my blood at an early age. But therewas also a real thoroughbred bloodline con-

nection. My cousin, PhilRanallo, was a well knownsportswriter for the BuffaloCourier-Express. His column,“What’s New Harry,” waswidely read throughoutWestern New York. No onewrote better about the politics

and business aspects of sports than cousinPhil.

Later my older brother was a reporter forboth the Detroit News and the Detroit FreePress.

Newspapers remained part of my life nomatter where I lived. It was almost a ritualfor me to start the day with the newspaperand a cup of coffee. I looked at the dailypaper as a short textbook of history, updatedeveryday.

But it was far more than a history book. Itwas an entre into my community and to aworld way beyond it. Through syndication Iwas privy to the thoughts of great mindssuch as Lippman, Reston, Rosenthal, andBuckley. William Safire was myGrammarian. Red Smith and Jim Murraygave me insights to sports beyond our localarea. I laughed at the humor of Buchwaldand Bombeck, often winced at the satiricalcartoons of Herblock, while enjoying thefoibles of “They’ll Do It Every Time,” byJimmy Hatlo.

Sadly, for the first time in almost 70 yearsI am without a local daily newspaper. It wasgoing to be temporary while I moved, butafter a few days without it I realized it hadlost its relevancy as it slowly and inexplica-bly got rid of the things that made it relevant.

Now, each week, it is a good feeling to seehow quickly The Pine Cone disappears fromthe newspaper racks. It is a better feeling
