READING IN EYFS and YEAR 1
Nursery • Children in our Nursery are read to daily by teachers and/or key
workers. This is to encourage them to take an interest in books anda wide range of quality fiction and non-fiction texts are used.
• Each nursery child takes a reading book home from the schoollibrary every week to encourage them to read at home and this isrecorded in their passports so that parents are informed and able toread with their children at home.
• Books linked to their current topics are also read to childrenregularly and a range of linked books are available and displayed inthe Nursery which children are able to read during child initiatedtime.
• Children are taught how to use and look after books (holding, turning pages, storing etc.) and this is modelled to them by staffthroughout their time in Nursery.
• Nursery children are taught phonics daily for at least 10 minutes atthe start of their session.
• Phase 1 and Phase 2 of ’Letters and Sounds’ are taught to ourNursery pupils. (Jolly Phonics resources are used.)
• Children are grouped for phonics sessions by age initially but veryquickly groupings become flexible and children move groupsaccording to their progress through the phonics scheme.
• Once children are working on Phase 2 (SATPIN) they start to takeletters/sounds home to practice with their parents. This is noted inpassports to communicate with parents as well as being recordedcontinuously in school.
• Induction meetings with parents include detailed advise aboutphonics and offer them support on how to work effectively withtheir children at home.

Reception and Year 1 • Ark Victoria Academy uses ‘Bug Club’ (Pearson Primary) as a reading
scheme. This scheme follows ‘Letters and Sounds’ (a phonics resource published in 2007 by the DFES.)
• ‘Bug Club’ consists of three strands of texts: ‘Phonics Bug’ (consisting of fiction, non-fiction and pattern and rhyme texts), ‘Comics for Phonics’ and ‘Bug Club’ (available in print and as an ‘e resource’) Initially Ark Victoria Academy is using ‘Phonics Bug’ and ‘Comics for Phonics.’(See Appendix 1.)
• Phase 1 of the scheme contains a range of picture books with no text.• Phase 2 follows Phase 2 of ‘Letters and Sounds’ when, after a wealth
of listening activities, songs and rhymes- i.e. revisiting Phase 1 - pupils are taught 19 letters and move on from oral blending and segmentation to blending and segmenting with letters.
• In Phase 2 of ‘Letters and Sounds’ there are 5 sets of letters to teach in a specific order. The reading scheme matches this with several books used to reinforce each set of letters. Within each set of books there is no particular order to follow; children may read that set in any order.
• Books will be given to children after they have been taught each set of letters, when the children are beginning to blend. Any children who are not yet secure with these sounds will be given a Phase 1 book to read, and will receive intervention to speed their progress. Some children will need to read the whole selection of books in each set; others may not need this and will continue onto the next set when appropriate.
• Each child will be heard read twice a week, one to one, by a teacher or teaching assistant. This will be recorded in their ‘Passport to Success’ (see Appendix 2) with comments and noted on a weekly log (see Appendix 3.)Their progression through the scheme will also be recorded on the ‘Phonics Bug Reading Record’ to show which books have been read.(See Appendix 4.)Children who need further support with reading will receive interventions in addition to this provision.

• As each new set of sounds/letters are taught children will havethose sounds/letters added to their sound pots alongside thosealready learned. The sound pots are taken home daily in book bagsfor children to practise with their parents/carers.
• High frequency ‘Tricky words’ (e.g. the, I, to, go, no in Phase 2) willbe taught alongside the sets of letters. These words are also addedinto the children’s sound pots once taught.
• By the end of Year 1 most pupils should be reading Phase 6 books.
• This process is repeated for each Phase of ‘Letters and Sounds’ untilthe children move onto free choice reading books.
