PENR ITH PANTHERS VS BR ISBANE BRONCOS

KICKOFF: FRIDAY 7.30PM @ PENRITH STADIUM | REFEREES: GAVIN BADGER & LUKE PHILLIPS | VIDEO REFEREES: CHRIS WARD & LUKE PATTEN | TV: CHANNEL NINE 9.30PM | RADIO: N/A

BARELY 10 MINUTES HAD been played against the Warriors last weekend when it looked like Penrith’s season

was dead and buried.Thomas Leuluai and Panthers-bound

Elijah Taylor had scored the fi rst two tries, giving the Warriors a 12-0 lead and leaving Penrith huddled behind the goal posts facing a conundrum.

Do they give up now, and face 70 minutes of embarrassment?

Or do they do exemplify what I mentioned

last week – that real champions fi ght the pain and rise above adversity?

We know what happened next – the Panthers produced perhaps their most inspirational win of the season, beating the Warriors 28-24. It was a high quality game of football and one that tested Penrith’s resolve until the very last minute of play.

It was awe-inspiring stuff , and with heavily discounted tickets on off er for tonight’s clash with Brisbane (and no live TV coverage),

Penrith fans have no excuse – they must get out to Penrith Stadium and help keep the season alive for the boys.

The equation from here is pretty simple – the Panthers need to win every single one of their matches to make the fi nals. It’s no easy task as the Broncos will be tough competition and the season ends with away trips against Canterbury and Manly.

But Penrith has shown on many occasions this year that in the right frame of mind, they can beat anyone on their day.

One of the real tasks for coach Ivan Cleary this week will be ensuring his side has its head right for tonight’s game. He’s had a disrupted, limited preparation given the side played in New Zealand on Sunday, travelled back to Sydney on Monday and now play on Friday night (another quirk of the NRL’s embattled scheduling system).

Cleary must also ensure his side stays focused on the task at hand and doesn’t look too far ahead to the games against the

higher placed Bulldogs and Sea Eagles.Brisbane are no easybeats and could well

be the dark horse of the fi nals race – their season is on the line against Penrith, and they sit in 10th spot, one point clear of the Panthers. Victory would put them three points clear, give them a chance of being in the eight at the end of the weekend, and almost certainly end the hopes of the Panthers.

Brisbane were far from impressive against Parramatta last weekend, and prior to that

beat the Dragons by just two points and drew with Newcastle. They have been far from dominant and the Panthers have every chance to kill them off tonight.

Isaac John was back to his best last weekend, and must prove that he has the ability to be consistent by backing it up tonight. His partner in crime, Luke Walsh, was also good last weekend – he got his kicking game right in most cases and we need to see more of it tonight.

But where Penrith might win this game against Brisbane is out wide – on both sides of the park.

Josh Mansour and David Simmons were simply brilliant last weekend – particularly Mansour who after a season dogged by injury, has returned to the kind of form that made us all stand up and take notice last year.

Simmons is one of the really good stories out of the Penrith camp this year. Off ered a deal in England to fi nish his career, Simmons

stuck solid with Penrith and signed a new two-year deal despite there being no guarantees about his place in the fi rst grade side. Since then, he has only got better and now leads the NRL’s try scoring ranks.

Tonight’s game has the makings of a beauty – two desperate teams, very much fi ghting under the “do or die” banner.

My fearless prediction? Golden point could be in the offi ng. There’s way too much at stake for this to be a blowout.

Hope still lives at PanthersPREVIEW BYTROY DODDS

With three games to go, the Panthers have already bettered their eff orts of last year. In 2012 they secured eight wins for the year. Last week’s victory was their ninth for 2013.

INSPIRATIONAL PENRITH PROP SAM McKendry has revealed he felt no fear when he was delivered the awful diagnosis

by doctors that he had suff ered a broken neck.

“I wasn’t really scared at the time because I was still walking, it didn’t really bother me,” the 24-year-old told Extra Time.

“It is a bit scary though when I think about it now, but here I am playing again.”

McKendry’s return to rugby league earlier this month after suff ering a fractured C6 vertebrae against Parramatta on April 29 can only be described as one of the most inspirational comebacks rugby league has had in years.

“I had a positive attitude the whole time,” McKendry said.

“I wasn’t nervous before my fi rst game back, I was just happy to be playing again.”

During his four months out of the game, the Kiwi international said he didn’t have to alter too much of his lifestyle to coincide with his injury.

“Everything was pretty much normal,” he said.

“I just couldn’t do any weights because of my neck but once I got the all clear to start training, everything went back to normal.

“It was about six weeks before I could train again. It was a bit boring but it’s good to be back playing.”

Penrith have had a horrifi c year when it comes to serious injuries, so bad that another Panthers forward, fellow New

Zealander Matt Robinson, also suff ered a similar neck injury to McKendry last month.

McKendry said he’s been in touch with Robinson throughout his recovery.

“I spoke to him after he suff ered the injury and told him everything’s going to be alright,” he said.

“He’s been pretty positive, I talk to him quite a bit. Me coming back last weekend will give him some confi dence going forward I believe.”

With Penrith’s year just about over, McKendry hopes he can try and regain some of that devastating form before the end of year Rugby League World Cup.

THERE WERE THOSE WHO THOUGHT SAM MCKENDRY’S CAREER WAS OVER, BUT THE BIG FORWARD HAS PROVEN THE DOUBTERS WRONG WITH A SPECTACULAR COMEBACK FROM A BROKEN NECK...

IT IS A CLEAR fact that with Greg Inglis, John Sutton and Adam Reynolds on the fi eld that the Rabbits are strong contenders

for this year’s title. Their eff orts in running over the top of the Sea Eagles in Gosford was the sort of performance that wins the big games.

I wouldn’t rule out the Sea Eagles come the fi nals as I think that Geoff Toovey had some valid issues in his post match spray, unfortunately his communication was a little astray of what the NRL likes.

The Roosters and Melbourne also continue to stake their claims.

The Roosters were expected to win against the Tigers and showed their class by delivering and winning well.

Melbourne on the other hand went to a very hostile Newcastle and true to their championship credentials stuck in there and had Cameron Smith and Cooper Cronk deliver to lead them home. I think that they are going to take some beating to stop them being the fi rst side since Brisbane to go back to back premiers.

I am fairly confi dent that the premiers will not come from outside the top four.

Those sides fi ghting out for the fi nal two positions will have run their race by the time the fi nals start as none have shown any consistent form to justify going past the fi rst week of the semis.

While the Dogs and the Sharks should be in the top eight and can beat anyone

on their day they both need to show some improvement in their 80 minute performance to be a real threat.

On the Panthers, David Simmons (pictured) must be given a massive wrap as it has been some time since a Panther has been leading the top try scorers at this time of the season.

Watching some of his eff orts over the past few rounds he must certainly be counted as one of the top fi nishers in the game.

Let’s hope that over the fi nal few rounds that he is able to post a few more to claim the try scoring title.

Simmons recently re-signed with the Panthers and will be a valuable asset moving forward.

IT WAS GRITTY, IT was tough, it was downright nerve-racking but will Penrith’s four point win over the New Zealand

Warriors kick start a late fi nals push? Kevin Kingston seems to think so.

The newly re-signed Panthers captain put in an inspirational display last Sunday to guide his side to their fi rst win in what has been a tough month of football.

“It was an absolute relief, that win,” Kingston told Extra Time on Tuesday.

“The last couple of weeks we’ve defi nitely been trying hard but haven’t got the results. It was a monumental eff ort by all the boys and to fi nally get the two points is just a massive relief.”

Even though the Warriors kept coming back time and time again after each Penrith try, Kingston said he was confi dent his bruised and battered side could hold on.

“You could sort of see that at the end of the game with the decisions the guys made under pressure in such a hostile environment like New Zealand, it’s a real credit to them,” he said.

Kingston admitted the sudden turnaround after four big losses was because the side started focusing on playing attacking football, something they plan to continue doing for the remaining three games.

“I think we had more of an attacking mentality even though we were under the pump and the fl ow of the game was going against us… we still attacked them and came up with some big plays which we got a lot of energy from,” he said.

“It’s certainly an important win and a bit of a turning point as well just like that Melbourne game.

“Hopefully it will kick start us into a few more wins in a row.”

Five weeks ago Penrith were in the box seat to book themselves a place in this year’s fi nals series. However, some huge injuries to key players including Nigel Plum, Matt Robinson and Adam Docker saw the Panthers slide quickly out of the eight.

“It was very tough losing that many games in a row, it takes its toll on you both mentally and physically,” Kingston said.

“But the energy and vibe after getting that win on the weekend will bounce us into the next three weeks.”

It’s been a rollercoaster season for the Penrith captain.

He was told earlier in the year by Panthers bosses that his services wouldn’t be required next year, only to later be told his professionalism off the fi eld earned him one last year at Penrith.

Kingston said he’s enjoyed the ride this year and credited this year’s team as a “bunch of fi ghters”.

“When our backs are up against the wall we just keep fi ghting and working hard,” he said.

“I feel like we’ve earned a bit of respect this year after people wrote us off at the start of the year. That motivated us and we just kept fi ghting, winning some games and getting some respect.

“I feel like our loyal fans have been very happy with us.”

Kingston knows the season is on the line against the Broncos on Friday night.

The side has quickly moved on from the euphoria of last weekend’s win and is now totally focused on the Broncos.

PANTHERS HOLDEN CUP COACH Garth Brennan has labelled it “unfi nished business” after he returned to coach

the side following four months at the helm of the Windsor Wolves.

After a month of poor results from both the NYC and NSW Cup sides, Panthers bosses made the rather interesting call to revert back to the old coaching system that started the season with Brennan handling the 20’s and Guy Missio the Wolves.

“It’s exciting to be back,” Brennan told Extra Time.

“There was probably that little bit in me that felt there was some unfi nished business, so this gives me the chance to go back and fi nish the year strong with the 20’s guys.”

Brennan admitted the timing of the restructure to the coaching system did come as a surprise considering it was only back in April that he took over the Windsor coaching role six weeks into the season.

“It defi nitely came as a surprise but was probably something the club had been thinking about for a little while,” he said.

“Some of those young guys had been up

in NSW Cup for a while and were showing a bit of fatigue, so I think the club thought it was time for them to go back.

“I think the club achieved what it wanted to, they saw those players go up to NSW Cup and they handled it quite well.”

Brennan blooded a number of youngsters from the Holden Cup into the NSW Cup including Bryce Cartwright, George Jennings, Kieren Moss, Kierran Moseley and Daniel Foster – all of whom returned in brilliant fashion in Penrith’s big win against the Warriors last Sunday.

“I was quietly confi dent they would put in a good performance,” Brennan said.

“I still believe they are a little bit away from reaching their full potential but that hopefully will take place over the next three weeks, and come September we start to get near where we need to be.”

The Panthers sit in third position on the ladder, but just six points separates third and eighth, so a top four spot is not confi rmed.

The Panthers take on the Brisbane Broncos at Penrith Stadium tonight from 5.15pm.

THE PANTHERS WILL HOST perhaps the biggest bell ringing celebrity of the year tonight when former Test captain

Steve Waugh tackles the task ahead of the clash against Brisbane. Waugh is in Penrith for the launch of his book, ‘The Meaning of Luck’, and will be at Big W in Penrith on Saturday signing copies.

The Extra Time Cheerleader of the Year Grand Finalists will be decided today. Check out www.facebook.com/westernweekender for the offi cial announcement of the grand fi nalists at 4pm.

The National Rugby League and NSWRL will work with local leagues and the NSW Government to ensure that individuals or groups who disrupt junior football competitions are dealt with in the strongest possible manner. NSWRL Chief Executive, Dave Trodden, this week supported the strong stance taken by the Penrith club in addressing disturbing crowd behaviour issues at a junior game recently. Photographs from the game have been widely distributed in the media and are ugly indeed. “Penrith District Rugby League is dealing with what is an isolated issue, albeit a serious one, in

conjunction with the NSW Police and we are closely monitoring that situation,” Mr Trodden said. “Sadly, this case highlights the problems that all junior sports can face and we need to send a strong message. Leagues can and do take action against players and offi cials but it can be diffi cult to deal with spectators who do the wrong thing.”

I told you some weeks ago that Panthers had out-sourced some of their marketing and social media to Spark Communications. A little birdie (or two) tells me that the relationship isn’t going as well as planned. I’ve got to say, some of the stuff being put out there on social media is cringe-worthy to say the least.

Expect the Panthers to announce a new signing for 2014 next week.

A politician at the footy? It must be election time. We captured Liberal candidate Fiona Scott, Opposition Leader Tony Abbott and Panthers players Cameron Ciraldo, Nigel Plum and Tim Grant chatting away last week. Mr Abbott was in town to make a funding commitment to Panthers for its new community centre.

JUN IOR RUGBY LEAGUE W ITH YVONNE PURTELL

“PEOPLE DON’T SHARE FACTS, they share emotions.”

This quote comes from Oxford University research and typifi es the reactions of many people within junior sport. I believe that every Monday morning, following a weekend of sport, all administrators receive calls and emails from people full of emotion of what they perceive transpired on the weekend.

In today’s society this is highlighted even further with social media with people ‘posting’, ‘tweeting’, and using other forms of social media to share their emotions.

I read a quote the other day from an unknown author: “Why do people jump on social networking sites right when a horrible thing happens to someone? Grieve by yourself, don’t beg for attention.”

I believe that a person who hits social media when full of emotion, often has second thoughts about what they said and by this time it is too late. Remember: THINK before you POST.

I am full of quotes today as I read another good

one this week: “I don’t believe professional athletes should be role models. I believe parents should be role models… It’s not like it was when I was growing up. My mum and grandmother told me how it was going to be. If I didn’t like it, they said ‘Don’t let the door hit you in the ass on your way out’. Parents have to take better control.” – Charles Barkley.

I sit in my offi ce week in and week out whilst our volunteers are out there at the forefront each weekend bearing the brunt of emotional adults on the sidelines. Encouragement of our players is a wonderful thing but unfortunately many times what is said from the sidelines is far from encouragement. Last weekend I was the ground manager at one of our semi-fi nal venues and whilst I hear about what goes on and I see what goes on at diff erent grounds, I was actually the volunteer who endured what goes on. How do we keep our volunteers within the game?

Last weekend saw the season fi nish for our mini players while other age groups played in their semi-fi nals.

THE FOOTY SHOW INS IDER

SWOOPING INTO THIS WEEK’S column is long-time favourite of ‘The Footy Show’, Mario ‘The Falcon’ Fenech. The

Insider caught up with Mario as he refl ected on the 20 seasons of the show and the current state of rugby league.

Looking back on ‘The Footy Show’ and its stellar 20 years, Mario pinpointed the show’s infl uence on his life,

“Rugby league is such a hard game, and ‘The Footy Show’ gives us an opportunity to have fun from a rugby league perspective,”

he said. “However, if I was an animal the RSPCA

would be outraged at some of the things that have been done to me over the years.”

Always one to embrace the fun, Mario still has a lot of love for enduring host Paul ‘Fatty’ Vautin.

“He was a good player and a smart operator. He has always kept it simple and presented well … it isn’t rocket science,” Mario said.

A rugby league man to his core, Mario Fenech is passionate about spreading the wealth of the game to the community.

“I do a lot of work in western Sydney and it really is the soul of rugby league,” he said.

“So many kids aspire to play our game, when I was a kid I’d ask the question, could I do that?”

His passion exudes when asked about the state of play in 2013.

“I’m excited today. We have a great

opportunity to push rugby league as the number one sport in summer and winter. We have a new structure and have bound together, taking on the challenge from the AFL.”

With Channel Nine signing a new rights deal, Mario believes the NRL is in a very strong position.

“Our game translates better to television than the AFL,” he said.

Mario agrees that ‘The Footy Show’ has plenty more in store for viewer.

“We smile and have fun but always discuss serious issues. With past and current players on the panel, we tip into issues and say it how it is,” he said.

A prodigious ambassador of the game, Mario Fenech concludes: “The Falcon is The Falcon because of rugby league”.

Don’t miss ‘The Footy Show’ next Thursday at 8.30pm. How good is the new timeslot?

THE PENRITH PANTHERS ARE supporting Footy Colours Day, which raises much needed funds for young

people fi ghting cancer on behalf of the Fight Cancer Foundation.

At the Panthers’ last home game of the season against the Brisbane Broncos tonight, the club wants you to show your true

colours by wearing your Panther black and pink and making a donation to save the lives of youths battling cancer.

In addition to collection donations to aid the lives of kids with cancer at all entrances to Centerbet Stadium, Penrith is off ering free children’s tickets with the purchase of any adult general admission ticket.
