MASS INTENTIONS August 22-30, 2020

Of the fifteen new parish names submitted to Bishop Zubik, and which were listed in former parish bulletins, four were not accepted. Diocesan officials were able to obtain permission for us to submit four additional names – ones that still had to be approved by Bishop David Zubik. Particularly since we had over two hundred submissions, I thought it was important we be able to list fifteen names. The new ones on the list either received substantial interest in the original list of
names, and/or in the deliberations of the advisory councils. One of the additional names we tried to submit after the original fifteen, St. Rita’s, was also not accepted by the Bishop. Sometimes, the Bishop does not accept a potential name because it is the name of an already existing parish church in the diocese or new parish in the diocese, or for a theological reason. In any case, the fifteen names which were approved, along with rationale for the names, are listed on pages 5 & 6 of this bulletin. Also included is your opportunity to select, in order of preference, your personal top five. This information will be in the bulletin for the next two weeks. The top five names will be submitted to the Bishop, who will then choose one as the name for our new parish in January of 2021.
As we continue to do our best in the midst of the current Covid 19 pandemic, I just want to give a simple reminder to everyone to please comply with the state and diocesan orders to wear a mask, one that covers both mouth and nose, and to sit at social distance during our services. We need to ensure we are all looking out for one another’s safety, and that everyone can be comfortable when they are in in church. Thank you for your cooperation!
It has been a great joy to perform all three of our parish grouping confirmations. What a wonderful privilege it was for me to administer the sacrament of Confirmation for these remarkable young people!
Gratefully in Christ,

PROPOSED NAMES & RATIONALE (1 OF 2)
Blessed Stanley Rother A 1963 graduate of Mount St. Mary's Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland, this priest of the diocese of Oklahoma City worked in the missions in Guatemala and was martyred in 1981. He is the first US-born citizen and priest to be
efforts, our dedication to faith formation and respect for the sacraments and vocations.
Christ the Bread of Life A reminder of what we celebrate at each and every Mass in Holy Communion and the Word of God. Our great love of Eucharist as "food" for our souls is central to our belief as Catholics in the true presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist. As a parish, we venerate the Eucharist through monthly Adoration services and annual 40 Hours celebration that brings hundreds of parishioners together.
Christ Our Light We are reminded at the Easter Vigil, when the Easter fire is kindled and the Paschal candle is blessed and then lit, Christ is Our Light. If we follow the Light, our hope is that when our time on earth is finished we will be united with Him. As we join together as one community in faith, we should remind ourselves through our name to follow the Light so we will be with Him for eternity.
Mary, Queen of Heaven Pope Pius XII asserts in his encyclical, Ad Caeli Reginam, that Mary deserves this title for several reasons. She is the Mother of God. She is closely associated as the New Eve with Jesus' redemptive work. Her preeminent perfection and intercessory power is instrumental in bringing people together and to her Son. Mary is a great inspiration to our parishioners long-standing Legion of Mary and St. Vincent de Paul groups.
Our Lady of Hope Mary had great hope for her Son when the Angel appeared to her. When Jesus was lost for days, Mary had hope to find him. She never gave up hope even at the end. We, too, should never give up hope. The Blessed Mother is our
to our Lord. Each of our four churches are strongly dedicated to Mary.
Our Lady of the Hills Because of our church communities' dedication to the Blessed Mother and our parish grouping being in the South Hills we feel this is a fitting name for our new parish. This is a time when our parish, our country, and the whole world needs to know Mary is there to be our intercessor to our Lord.
Saints Martha and Mary Martha and Mary witnessed one of our Lord's greatest miracles: the raising of their brother, Lazarus, which is recounted in John's gospel. These great saints not only knew our Lord on earth, but they symbolize the two dimensions of Church life: one of charity and service, the other of knowledge and contemplation. They also reflect the traditions of the churches in our grouping, with their long histories of liturgical celebration, education and service to others. Finally, we note that with the exception of parishes named for Our Lady, there are only three newly consolidated parishes commemorating holy women, who gave great examples of devotion and charity in Church history and in our diocese.
Saint Anthony of Padua St. Anthony of Padua's life is what every Christian's life is meant to be: a steady courage to face the ups and downs of life, the call to love and forgive, to be concerned for the needs of others, to deal with crises great and small, and to have our feet solidly on the ground of total trusting love and dependence on God. For many years, one of our four churches held an annual public novena to St. Anthony. St. Anthony wanted to share the good news of the Gospels to anyone who would listen. Our four churches have always been welcoming and want to share our faith with anyone whom our lives touch. Education and learning about our faith, important to St. Anthony, are also very important to the lives of the members of our Grouping.
Saint Faustina The Divine Mercy Chaplet is a very important and powerful prayer which unites our four churches, through our public recitation every Saturday morning. St. Faustina encourages us not to despair, but instead to place our trust in Jesus. and take on an attitude of mercy toward one's neighbor. What better representation to unite our parish in these difficult times! By taking her patronage for our parish, our focus on Divine mercy and extending mercy within our parish and into the community will build a parish community that is prayerful and whose lives will be changed. There is a strong Eastern European heritage throughout all four of our churches.

truly this in our faith community: “Make Me a Channel of Your Peace." We have strong ties to Franciscan principles and ongoing ties to the
Sisters of St. Francis in the development of all four of our churches: they were teachers
Gospel virtues St. John Paul II espoused through our spirit of sacrifice, prayer, respect, discipline, work, mutual
his intercession to resolve serious health issues (kidney transplant against disheartening odds). Our four churchesto Jesus, Mary and Joseph.
Also, we represent his obedience, morals, kindness and generosity, and his devotion

W e d d i n g C o o r d i n a t o r T e a m Our parish grouping is building a volunteer wedding coordinator team. The hope is to have a team of 10-12 volunteer wedding coordinators who will assist couples on their wedding day at any of our four worship sites. Mary Beth Green, pastoral associate, will coordinate this volunteer program.
We are looking for volunteers, 21 years of age or older, who are registered members of Nativity, St. Gabriel, St. Germaine and St. Valentine Churches and would be available for wedding rehearsals (usually Friday evenings) and wedding ceremonies (usually Saturday afternoons). Volunteers will be asked to secure clearances and necessary training for “Protecting God’s Children.”
Anyone interested in helping with this important ministry so as to better ensure a smooth and stress free wedding day for our brides and grooms, are
asked to contact Mary Beth by calling 412-833-0661 or [email protected].

Medjugorje Pilgrimage November 10-20, 2020
Spiritual Director: Fr. Tony Gargotta
Medjugorje is a town in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It’s been an unofficial place of Catholic pilgrimage since the Virgin Mary allegedly appeared on Apparition Hill in 1981. There is a “Queen of Peace” statue marking the site of the 1st apparition and one in front of the St. James Church. Liquid has been said to drip from the “Risen Christ” statue near the church. A concrete cross tops Cross Mountain, to the south.
$2,795 includes: roundtrip airfare from Pittsburgh; all transfers in luxury motor coach, breakfast and dinner while in Hotel Villa Grace in Medjugorje, overnight in Dubrovnik, all applicable taxes and English speaking guide. A $500 deposit is due before September 20, 2020.

Religious Education 2020-2021 Plan Plans for this year’s CCD have been formed with Governor Wolf’s Process to Reopen Pennsylvania and Bishop Zubik’s Moving Forward Together plans. Parish Grouping 218 will provide in-person Faith Formation classes and will also offer virtual sessions. Additionally, there will be a traditional homeschooling option for any family who has a child or children in grades 1-8. Of course, health data will be monitored to assess the implications to all Faith Formation programs; adjustments may need to be made throughout the year.
Members of the Faith Formation Health and Safety Development Team include: Fr. John Skirtich, Fr. John Hissrich, Carol Vater, Jeff Conklin and Maryann Wellinger. They have looked carefully at the Pennsylvania Department of Education and PA Department of Health documents to establish the following policies:
Faith Formation classrooms will only be used for CCD; rooms will be closed off to others.
Hand sanitizer pumps will be in each room and can be used throughout the CCD session.
Disinfectant wipes will be provided for each classroom for high touch surfaces.
When possible, classroom windows will be opened and where available ceiling fans will be turned on.
Water fountains will be covered.
Supplies will not be shared.
Both teachers and children will wear face coverings.
Desks will be spaced 6 feet apart and class size will be limited.
