Welcome to Bluffton.

You’ll find Bluffton offers many features of larger communities, but hasn’t lost its small-town charm. Use this guide as a road map to the pleasures of visiting, living and working in Bluffton.

Bluffton has grown steadily over the past 25 years. Our population reached 3,944 in 2008, according to the U.S. Census. Our borders have extended east into Hancock County, although the majority of residents live in Allen County.

Getting to and from Bluffton is easy. With our location on Interstate 75, visitors from Canada, Florida and parts in between find our town im-mediately at exits 140 and 142. Bluffton is also just five minutes from U.S. Route 30, and the historic Lincoln Highway, which reaches from the Atlantic to the Pacific.

Surrounded by thousands of acres of wheat, corn, soybeans and tomatoes, our community draws residents and visitors with its high quality resources. The historic downtown is packed with over 40 shopping and dining opportunities.

Bluffton University enrolls over 1,000 students and shares its many cultural programs. Bluffton Hospital has grown with the community: its departments range from emergency to obstetric services. And the Bluffton public schools are rated “Excellent” by the State of Ohio.

Other parts of Bluffton just have to be experi-enced to be appreciated, like tasting sweet corn fresh out of the field, being greeted by name at local shops or seeing the holiday “Blaze of Lights,” which dates from the advent of rural electrical service.

When you explore Bluffton, we’re sure you’ll be rewarded.

Sincerely,

Fred Steiner, CEOBluffton Area Chamber of Commerce

Dennis Gallant, Mayor, Village of Bluffton

A bit of historyBluffton celebrated its sesquicentennial (150th anniversary) in 2011. But our history as a com-munity goes back to the early 1830s, when Swiss immigrants moved to rural Richland Township and set up a large farming community known as “The Settlement.”

Other small groups of European immigrants moved to an area along Riley Creek. Several dozen families lived there by 1861. That unin-corporated community called itself Shannon, after Ohio governor Wilson Shannon. However, there was another Shannon in Ohio at the time. The United States Post Office required our Shannon to change its name.

Two theories exist about the naming of Bluffton. One explains that folks visited Bluffton, Indiana, thought that community was attractive, and suggested the name. The other version is that Riley Creek formed several bluffs on the eastern side of the village. Most of those bluffs are gone due to development that changed the landscape. No one knows the exact reasons, beyond the

fact that the Village of Bluffton was officially incorporated in 1861.

Famous residents and visitors Most communities boast of having famous residents and Bluffton has had its share. U.S. Senator Cyrus Locher, Democrat, served Ohio in the 1920s. His nephew, Ralph Locher, a Bluff-ton High School and Bluffton College graduate, became mayor of Cleveland and later a member of the Ohio Supreme Court.

Comedienne Phyllis Diller attended Bluff-ton College and married a Bluffton resident. Television journalist Hugh Downs, once called Bluffton’s most famous dropout, also attended Bluffton College. Elbert Dubenion, who played professional football with the Buffalo Bills, is a BC alum. Although never a resident, Bluffton’s most infamous visitor was John Dillinger. He robbed Citizens National Bank on August 14, 1933.

Old-style charm and modern conveniencesIn its third century, Bluffton is a peaceful, com-fortable place. Crossing town takes just minutes

by car and not much more when walking or biking. Most needs can be met right here, whether you’re looking for locally-grown produce, a birthday present or a major appliance. Bluffton also offers convenient medical services, is served by its own airport, supports its own recreation center and has a growing complement of parks and bike paths.

The heart of Bluffton is found downtown, where the summer of 2009 saw a $2 million transfor-mation of the retail district. This streetscape program introduced sidewalks with attractive brick inlays, new street lamps resembling the originals from the 1930s and more benches near stores.

Our three-story historic town hall, which had its own $2.5 million renovation completed in 2008, is our community’s most recognized feature and anchors the north end of the downtown

Bluffton Past & Present

Main St. looking South from City Hall

area. Built in 1887, the three-story brick edifice is still the pride of Bluffton. At the opposite end of the district you will find the Bluffton Public Library, the high school and post office.

Who lives here? The people of Bluffton demonstrate many dif-ferent passions. Examples are high school sports fever, the love of live music, social activism including mission trips and vigils protesting the death penalty, and an appreciation for traditions like the Trout Derby and homecoming parades.

The town also holds two special designations. In 2009, Bluffton became the first Fair Trade Town in Ohio and the 11th in the nation. This initiative supports selling and using Fair Trade products. As a Tree City USA, Bluffton has been highly reactive to the Emerald Ash borer threat, as guided by the tree commis-sion. In a nutshell, Bluffton residents, the oldest families and the newest, are invested in the community.

What to See & Do

BLUFFTON PUBLIC SCHOOLSAlthough Bluffton’s Victorian school house was razed in 1954, the original school bell stands in front of the middle school as a reminder of the educational history of the community.

BLUFFTON TOWN HALLIn 2005, Bluffton voters saved the iconic town hall from demolition. An income tax was passed to completely renovate the three-story brick building, which was built in 1887. It houses village offices, including the police department, and features a large public meeting room on the third floor.

DOWNTOWN RETAIL DISTRICTMany of the Main Street retail district buildings retain their appearance from 1933 when John Dillinger robbed Citizens National Bank.

LAKE ERIE AND WESTERN RAILWAY DEPOTPassenger trains no longer stop here, but the for-mer Lake Erie and Western Railway (later Nickel Plate Road) passenger depot is restored and is now located at the Buckeye park. It is owned by the Bluffton Sportsmen’s Club and is used for family reunions, graduation parties and wedding receptions.

MUSSELMAN LIBRARY AT BLUFFTON UNIVERSITY The Mennonite Historical Library in Musselman Library provides historical documents of the Swiss Mennonite settlers to our community.

SOUTH MAIN STREETSeveral South Main Street residences exhibit the charm of the oil boom era experienced in northwestern Ohio in the 1890s.

SWISS HOMESTEADThe house, originally built for Christian Schumacher, has been completely renovated and restored to its 1840s configuration. It is being outfitted and furnished with historical items to resemble a Swiss Settlement house of the period.

HISTORIC PLACES

Bluffton is blessed with art displayed throughout the village. John Klassen, a Russian Mennonite immigrant, sculpted many works on the Bluffton University campus, where he was an art instructor. Our post office lobby features the WPA mural “Joseph Deford and His Friends Building the First Cabin in Bluffton” (1941) by Sante Graziani. Oscar Velasquez, a contempo-rary mural painter, created the historical mural located north of the Presbyterian Church.

SAUDER VISUAL ART CENTER AT BLUFFTON UNIVERSITYPottery, sculpture, photography, watercolors, oil paintings, and drawings by professional artists are displayed throughout the academic year at the Grace Albrecht Gallery in Sauder Visual Art Center. All art exhibits are free and open to the public. REAM HOLIDAY FOLK ART DISPLAYThe Ream display was started in 1937 when electricity first came to rural Jenera. Dorothy and Harry Ream created painted plywood figures to display in their rural yard and, year by year, their creation grew and grew. The figures, which range from a nativity scene to local faces, were given to the community of Bluffton in 1983 and have been shown at Christmas time in the Bluffton Presbyterian Church lawn ever since.
