1.0 Introduction
Vibration & Sound Services & Sales Pte Ltd was engaged by Mitsui Phenol Singapore Pte Ltd to
perform piping ODS exploratory study for PD 7067.
The job was performed on the 5th May 2008 and was witnessed by Mr Henry Choy, Mechanical
Engineer of Mitsui Phenol Singapore Pte Ltd.
2.0 Instrumentation
The following instrumentation were used to perform the vibration measurement:-
• Vibration Machinery Analyzer s/n 2680D
• Vibration Transducer ICP Accelerometer 500mV/g
• Impact Hammer 5000lbs
• Related cables & Magnetic Base
• Analysis software
3.0 RBTS_ODS Analysis Procedures
Low frequency accelerometers were installed on the measurement point as shown on the following
drawings). Data acquisition parameters were setup for each individual channel. Raw data in
acceleration unit and Fmax up to 200 Hz were selected. Data for each channel was recorded for
200 seconds.
Based on the piping isometrics a model was reconstructed on the software and the measured
vibration data was allocated to the measurement points on the model. This was used to create an
Operation Deflection Shape Analysis of the model.
Also the data was post processed to generate velocity and displacement spectrums for assessment
of the severity levels of the vibration.
The table and figures below show the location of measurement points, see Diagram 1.

Pipe vibration correction will involve re-tuning the pipe system to a different frequency. This may
be accomplished by re-locating the pipe supports, installing different supports, isolating the pipe
from its hangers or joints, or installing expansion joints in the pipe.
Before any modification is undertaken another pipe analysis should be carried out to determine
that the modification does not violate other design parameters such as machine coupling
momentum or connection stresses.
Vibration data will be compared with allowable piping vibration in displacement, mm/sec units. An FFT
using double integration was carried out on the raw data (time waveform) to produce Spectrums in mm/sec.

7.0 Discussion & Analysis
Stress per deflection calculation below was based on the advanced analysis that inlet pipe was
performing like a cantilever with one end was fixed and other end was free. The maximum
deflection of the cantilever was measured with fixed end as reference or zero deflection. Obtain
more nearer to the analysis, it was necessary to calculate the deflection of free end point relative to
the fix point. Cross-Phase spectrums in figure 1 to 6 shows their phase difference plotted against
frequency.
Vibration forces exerted by rigid coupling differ from those with flexible ones. Flexible coupling
will exhibit multiples at 2x of the pump running speed. Flexible coupling is deemed more
forgiving should there be a misalignment in between two shafts. This pump is fixed coupled (rigid
type), and any misalignment in between shafts will not generate any 2x vibration signature. What
will be shown on vibration spectrum would either be harmonics of equipment running speed from
the effects of ‘rub’ in between shaft to sleeve bearing, axial forces as a result from roller bearing
with defects, or a 1x running speed component due to the exerting force from a bent shaft.
In this survey, we were not certain on whether the misalignment phenomenon has caused a defect
due to ‘sudden’ movement of the equipment train or vice-versa. It would logically require a
tremendous force to misalign such a massive pipeline. Fatigue damage accumulation is associated
to the total history of the cyclic wave bending moment rather than just the extreme value of the
moment per se; thus the random nature of this history needs to be considered.
The buckling failure of lower or upper structures is more complex. Lower and upper structures are
generally grillages stiffened longitudinally and tranversely, but still presenting transverse
structures, named frames, so that different buckling or clamping modes can occur : failure of
piping between stiffeners, inter-frame flexural buckling of the stiffeners, inter-frame tripping of
the stiffeners, inter-frame buckling of the panel and overall grillage failure, usually between lower
inlet pipe flanges, involving deflection of both longitudinal and transverse stiffeners.
Vibration forces from the piping, with combinations of the natural frequency encouraged
resonance to occur, and thus contributed to a slow but further cyclic deterioration of the structures.
Despite the vibration level being acceptable as compared against the Piping Stress Allowable, the
undesirable effect of resonance will be detrimental over a long period, should the owner decides to
operate its loading and operation at or near resonance condition.
8.0 Conclusion & Recommendations
a. Deflection at free end point horizontal direction 1(H) of Inlet Pipe to Pressure Vessel
exceeds the allowable deflection based on the allowable stress suggested by API 618
b. The amplitude at symmetrical locations on dissimilar loading stricture differs due to
variation in excitation magnitudes as well as possible difference in stiffness and damping
properties. Also we have seen that the quality of weld joint plays a very important role in
the strength and stress concentration factor at the weld joint
Data acquisition and calculation have been conducted with utmost care so that we arrive at an
acceptable result and minimize the inaccuracy. However, accuracy might be compromised due to
the factors below :-
a. Assumption on weight. The pipe and flange weight used for the calculation based on the
information of new pipe and flange. During operation time, the weight could alter because
of worn out, deposit, corrosion, etc.
b. Accuracy on the measurement of pipe and dimension
c. Selection of correction factor
Although such factors could contribute to a certain degree of erroneousness, we believe that it
would be still within engineering tolerance.
Recommendation to avert catastrophe would be :-
a. There is a need to reduce deflection to reduce the dynamic stress at inlet pipe, see Diagram
below.
b. Reinforcement pad at the branch connection will provide additional strength and reduce the
probability of joint failure.
In addition to reinforcement pad additional gusset support in the horizontal direction should not only reduce
deflection but also need to shift the resonance frequency higher (more stiffness)

27.64 mm/sec at 131.4º in which allocated at 1 metre away from the Pressure Vessel inlet pipe.
