News from the Interact Club Interact has been hard at work once again this term with our fundraising efforts for Cambodia and other projects in the school and community. Our goal for fundraising for Cambodia is drawing nearer. In a couple of weeks we will be holding our next public barbeque, this will occur in Corbett Plaza, on the weekend of the 23rd and 24th of June. There will be a sausage sizzle as well as home baked cakes, with all profits going straight into our Cambodia savings. We would love to see everyone there.

Interact is also supporting the upcoming school musical, running the canteen and front of house. This is our service to the school. Interact loves supporting the performing arts at Bowral High and this musical is no exception.

In the wider community, Interact is planning a large event for August, so stay tuned for more news on this.

Interact meets every Monday and Friday at lunch in B03. All are welcome and we encourage anybody with any interest in sup-porting the community to come along and become a new member. Come along and support the club through the donation of your time and skills.

NAPLAN (online)

Another year has come and gone in regard to NAPLAN. Logisti-

cally, it was quite a large initiative to organise this year for our

year 7 and year 9 students. This was due to the added complexi-

ty of completing the tests online. A big thank you goes out to

Mrs Kelly and many other support staff, who contributed to the

meticulous running of NAPLAN in 2018.

Southern Highlands Science and Engineering Challenge – Bowral HS crowned champions! The Science and Engineering Challenge (SEC) is a nationwide STEM outreach program presented by the University of Newcastle in partnership with communities, Rotary clubs, universities and sponsors. A tremendous vote of thanks goes out to our two Science teachers Mrs Kowalcyzk and Miss Hook and their fabulous year 10 students on their famous victory! We wish them well as they progress to the “Super Challenge” at Newcastle University later this term.

Ration Challenge Bowral HS has taken up the Ration Challenge in 2018! A whole host of students and staff are partaking in this ‘act for peace’. The Ration Challenge has been designed to reflect, as closely as possible, what it’s like to eat rations as a Syrian refugee in Jor-dan. Currently the school has raised in excess of $3600! What a won-derful effort! Last week, the school received a personalised YouTube mes-sage from the founder of the Ration Challenge, an aid worker in Syria. The hyperlink is listed below:

A big thank you to Mr Staats and Ms Kaufline for the work they have done in organising this important fundraising initiative. Jason Conroy

Bowral matches NSW JCL record The BHS chess team travelled to Warrawong High School to com-pete in round 3 of the statewide secondary school tournament. The team also progressed to the third round in the previous year and were looking to break that record. Alexi Lawrence accepted the challenge of taking the black pieces on board 2 and looked to play a fast tempo game. However, such haste proved to be his undoing and Warrawong took an early 1-0 lead. Jack Fahey made his debut for the team and played a free flowing game where both players had opportunities, yet neither could launch a telling blow. Jack managed to claw his way back from a seemingly losing late position to salvage a stalemate.

Opening moves: On boards 1 to 4 (left to right); Matthew, Alexi, Bailey and Jack

Our team captain Matthew Sutcliffe was again tasked with the difficult assignment of taking on the best opposition player. After a tight opening and middle game, a telling knight fork proved enough for Warrawong to seal victory with an unassailable 2.5 - 0.5 lead. Bailey Whitton kept his composure to secure victory on board 3 with a patient forced mate, managing to overcome a well organised de-fence to boost team spirits. The teams enjoyed a few friendly games and outstanding hospitality from Warrawong HS, before wishing their team well for the rest of the competition. Warrawong HS 2.5 Bowral HS 1.5
