AT THE BEGINNING, THE MUSIC IS A SLOW DRAWL, TO EMPHASISE THAT SOMETHING IS GOING TO HAPPEN…

TOWARDS THE END, ESPECIALLY THROUGH THE FIGHT SEQUENCE, THE BEATS BECOME MORE FREQUENT AND HEAVY – CREATING A CLIMAX.

BECAUSE THE MUSIC WAS FAST-PACED, THE TRAILER HAD TO BE THE SAME. I USED ONLY THE KEY LINES OF DIALOGUE TO MAKE THE EDITING PRECISE AND ONLY LETTING THE AUDIENCE HEAR THE KEY DETAILS.

BLACK AND PURPLE, CORRESPONDS WITH E4 BRANDING.

THE AUDIENCE ALWAYS ASSUMES THAT CONFLICT WILL OCCUR IN SOAP OPERAS, SO THEY KNOW THAT THE THREE BOYS WILL FIGHT. I TRIED TO PUT ACROSS THE MORAL OF THE STORY: IF YOU FIGHT AND FALL, WHO WILL BE THERE TO PICK YOU BACK UP?

WE RELIED HEAVILY ON OUTSIDE NATURAL LIGHTING. EVEN THOUGH SOME OF THE ORIGINAL SCENES WERE MEANT TO BE IN THE DARK, THERE WAS NO WAY WE COULD GET GOOD ENOUGH FOOTAGE – WE RESORTED TO FILMING IN LATE AFTERNOON, SO IT STILL LOOKED LIKE IT WAS GOING DARK. WE ALSO CHOSE LOCATIONS THAT WERE INCONSPIUOUS, SO IT LOOKED LIKE IT WAS REAL LIFE.

WE USED HIGH AND LOW CAMERA ANGLES TO MAKE THE CHARACTER’S STATUS IN THE FIGHT SHOW. AGAIN THIS SCENE SHOULD’VE BEEN IN THE DARK, BUT BECAUSE THE CAR PARK WAS EMPTY, WE DECIDED THAT IT STILL LOOKED AS THOUGH A FIGHT WAS DESTINED TO OCCUR.

PROPSPREGNANCY TEST:A TYPICAL STORYLINE/SOCIAL THEME – SIMPLE BUT EFFECTIVE. TEENAGE PREGNANCY IS A GROWING MORAL PANIC AND THE FACT THAT BREE IS SAT IN THE COLLEGE TOILETS LETS THE AUDIENCE KNOW JUST HOW YOUNG SHE IS.

DRUGS:SALT IN A ZIPPER BAG ( THE MOST REALISTIC SUBSTITUTE) – RELATABLE AND SHOWS CHARACTERS TURNING TO BAD THINGS TO GET AWAY FROM THEIR LIVES. ANOTHER SOCIAL THEME; THERE IS A GROWING MORAL PANIC ABOUT TEENAGERS AND DRUG USE.

SINGLE ROSE:KATE HAS BEEN LEFT AT THE ALTER, SHE KNOWS MASON IS NOT GOING TO ARRIVE, THE FALLING ROSE SIGNIFIES HERSELF.

JOHNNY ALSO USES AN EMPTY PINT GLASS BEFORE HE IS CONFRONTED BY RAV, TO SHOW THAT HE HAS BEEN WAITING FOR RAV TO APPEAR – AS THOUGH THE FIGHT WAS PLANNED; WHICH IS CONFIRMED AT THE BEGINNING OF THE TRAILER.

TOILETS: BREE IS WAITING FOR RESULTS, THEY ARE BASED IN A COLLEGE, THE CHARACTERS ARE STILL YOUNG YET THERE ARE MANY THINGS THAT ARE HAPPENING TO THEM.DRESS: OFF-WHITE, NOT AS INNOCENT AS WE FIRST THOUGHT.

INSIDE THE PUB: DARK AND SHIFTY – CORRELATES WITH WHAT THE BOYS ARE TALKING ABOUT ; BEATING UP RAV. CASUAL: THE BOYS ARE DRESSED AS THOUGH THEY ARE ENJOYING A NIGHT OUT WITH ‘FRIENDS’.

BENCH OUTSIDE PUB: NEEDED TO BE BRIGHTER, BREE HAS FOUND A CONFIDENT IN RAV. BUT IT IS STILL DULL, IMPLYING THAT RAV WILL NOT REACT WELL TO BREE TELLING HIM.COATS: BLACK COATS SIGNIFIES THE DEATH OF SOMETHING; COULD MEAN THE DEATH OF A CHARACTER, OR HER RELATIONSHIP WITH RAV/JOHNNY? AN ENIGMA IS CREATED AS BREE HAS AN ACCIDENT LATER ON IN THE TRAILER. PLAY AREA/PARK: AT FIRST WE WERE NOT SURE WHETHER WE

WANTED A PLAY AREA, BUT WE REALISED THAT THE CHARACTERS COULD BE PORTRAYED AS STILL HAVING CHILDISH TENDENCIES. THEY MAY HAVE GROWN UP PLAYING IN THIS PARK, IT IS ANOTHER CENTRAL SOCIAL MEETING PLACE.COAT: HE IS WEARING A BLACK COAT, IN THIS SCENE IT MEANS DANGER, HE IS BACK IN TOWN BUT NO ONE KNOWS THE REAL REASON WHY. ALSO HE WAS OUTCAST IN THE FIRST PLACE, HE IS WEARING BLACK OT SIGNIFY HIS LONELINESS

STREET: VERY URBAN AREA, AUDIENCE CAN RELATE IF THEY ARE IN THE WORKING CLASS DEMOGRAPHIC. WE CHOSE A STREET FILLED WITH TERRACED HOUSES TO GIVE THE IMPRESSION THE CHARACTERS LIVED IN AN OVER-POPULATED TOWN.COAT: HE IS WEARING A BLACK COAT TO SIGNIFY THE DEATH OF KATE’S LOVE FOR HIM.

I MADE THE LAST SEQUENCE OF SHOTS SLOW-MOTION TO EMPHASISE THAT EACH AND EVERY ON OF THEM HAVE EQUAL IMPORTANCE IN THE SOAP. IT CREATES TENSION IN THE AUDIENCE BECAUSE THEY WANT TO FIND OUT EVERYTHING THAT WILL HAPPEN.

I PERIODICALLY PLACED SLOW-MOTION HEAD TURNS INTO MY TRAILER TO EMPHASISE WHO THE CLIPS AND DIALOGUE WERE REFERRING TO.

I FELT THAT IF THERE WERE MORE THAN ONE MAIN CHARACTER, EACH WITH THEIR OWN STORYLINE, RUNNING PARALLEL TO EACH OTHER, THE AUDEINCE WOULD BE MORE INTRIGUED. I ALSO FOUND THAT CORONATION STREET AND EASTENDERS DID THIS; THEY WOULD HAVE A NEW STORYLINE EACH WEEK, BUT ONLY ONE WOULD TAKE CENTRESTAGE – UNTIL IT WAS SOLVED.

THROUGH THE LAST SLOW-MOTION SHOTS, A ‘HASH-TAG’ LINK APPEARS. THIS ALLOWS FANS TO JOIN ON SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES AND BE UPDATED. THIS IS THE TECHNOLOGY PHENOMENON OF THE 21ST CENTURY – A SOCIAL NORM, EVERYONE KNOWS WHAT IT MEANS.
