Dear Readers,

10 years of ESMA : Assessmentand Future.

January 16, 2010 the Official Journal of theFrench Republic published the declarationmade on January 6 concerning the existenceof ESMA. The exhibition at the end of Ja-nuary 2020 at the City Hall of the V th arron-dissement of Paris celebrates ESMA’s foun-ding.

Le 16 Janvier 2010 parut au Journal Officielde la République française la déclarationfaite le 6 Janvier de l’existence de l’ESMA.L’exposition de fin Janvier 2020 à la Mairiedu V° arrondissement de Paris commémorecette naissance.

The reader can go to our sitehttp://www.math-art.eu/exhibitions.php#1to discover the content of this exhibition.Its preparation was not easy, due in partto the strike movements from October 2019until January 2020 in France. The invitationcards reviewed by the city hall arrived to ustoo late, and our poster was well modifiedto our disadvantage. Thus the publicitysurrounding the exhibition could hardly bedone.

That said, as in all previous exhibitions,all visitors really admired the content. Twopages in the guest book bear witness to this,for example.

Les cartonsd’invitation revus par la Mairie nous sontparvenus trop tard, l’affiche que nous avionsconçue a été modifiée à notre désagrément,la publicité faite autour de l’exposition n’apratiquement pu être faite.

Cela dit, comme dans toutes les pré-cédentes expositions d’ailleurs, tous lesvisiteurs en ont véritablement admiré lecontenu. Deux pages du livre d’or en portentpar exemple témoignage.

The exhibition included the screening of vi-deos chosen by Arend Smit. Some questionsraised by the production and the contentof the videos will be addressed in a newnewsletter. You will find in the postscript anexample of images from one of Arend’s pro-jections, which we can already marvel at.

L’exposition comprenait la projectionde vidéos choisies par Arend Smit. Quelquesquestions soulevées par la réalisation et lecontenu des vidéos seront abordées dans unenouvelle newsletter. On trouvera dans lepost-scriptum un exemple d’images prove-nant de l’une des projections de Arend, etsur lesquelles on peut déjà s’interroger.

A new exhibition of this scale would fo-cus most likely chiefly on the works of Ana-toly Fomenko, widely exhibited abroad butpractically unknown in France, and on theworks of Francesco de Comite. De Comite’svery beautiful and varied small computer-created sculptures could serve as a counter-part to the rich and expressive unretouchedtables.

Une nouvelle exposition de cette enver-gure serait probablement et principalementcentrée sur les œuvres d’Anatoly Fomenko,largement exposé à l’étranger mais pratique-ment inconnu en France, et sur les œuvres deFrancesco de Comite : les très belles et va-riées petites sculptures du second créées parordinateur feraient pendant aux riches et ex-pressifs tableaux exécutées sans retouche parle premier.

But it appears, however, that ESMA hasno more money except that that set aside toinsure the works for the next year. The prin-ting, framing, and transporting of the workshas therefore become beyond our current fi-nancial means.

Malheureusement il se trouve quel’ESMA n’a plus d’argent à ce jour, sinonpour assurer les œuvres pendant la prochaineannée 2021. Imprimer les œuvres, les enca-drer, les transporter est donc devenu hors denos moyens financiers actuels.

Several reasons have undoubtedly com-bined lead to create this situation. ESMAhas only been able to function thanks to thecontinued presence of Richard Denner, ourwebmaster, Sharon Giraud for translations,and myself. I have consistently exercised allthe initiative, administrative and financialfunctions resulting therefrom. I have so farnot been able to find a successor to continueESMA’s administrative, artistic, intellectual,and promotional activities.

Plusieurs raisons se sont sans douteconjuguées qui ont abouti à cette situation.L’ESMA n’a pu fonctionner que grâce à laprésence continue de Richard Denner, notrewebmaster, de Sharon Giraud pour les tra-ductions, et de moi-même. J’ai constammentexercé toutes les fonctions d’initiative, admi-nistratives et financières résultant. Je n’ai pujusqu’à présent trouver de successeur pourremplir les tâches précédentes.

None of the persons I know has anyinterest in any administrative function, totransform themselves for a moment into alobbyist capable of explaining and promotingthe content of our exhibitions, their intel-lectual and social interest, collecting fundsfrom various organizations, in addition tojudgments that are sometimes quick, evensuperficial. We have other fairly concernedconcerns and occupations.

Aucune des personnes que je connaisn’éprouve d’intérêt pour les fonctions ad-ministratives quelles qu’elles soient, pour setransformer un moment en lobbyiste à mêmed’expliquer et faire valoir le contenu de nosexpositions, leur intérêt intellectuel et so-cial, de recueillir des fonds auprès d’orga-nismes divers, par ailleurs aux jugementsparfois rapides, voire superficiels. Nous avonsd’autres préoccupations et occupations assezprenantes.

For my part, I have undertaken the wri-ting of works, memorial works but especiallythat, important in my mind, of a recastingand a broad enrichment of the first part of «Topology and Perception ». I would like todevote myself to these essays. The writing ofanother work would also be to format fromthe texts of the various presentations that Ihave made on the relations between mathe-matics and arts, most of which can be foundon our site.

I will post another of my concerns in thepostscript. Thus, the future newsletters willbe published less often, unless of course so-meone is willing to resume the course of wri-ting, or simply share their views from timeto time : this forum is open to all.

J’ai, pour ma part, depuis quelquetemps et entre autres, entrepris la rédactiond’ouvrages, ouvrages mémoriels mais surtoutcelui, dans mon esprit important, d’une re-fonte et d’un large enrichissement de la pre-mière partie de Topologie et Perception. Jesouhaiterais me consacrer à ces rédactions.Celle d’un autre ouvrage serait également àmettre en forme à partir des textes des diversexposés que j’ai été amené à faire sur les rela-tions entre mathématiques et arts ; la plupartd’entre eux sont accessibles sur notre site.

Je ferai part, en post-scriptum, d’uneautre de mes préoccupations. De la sorte, lesprochaines newsletters seront beaucoup plusrares, à moins bien sûr que quelqu’un veuillebien en reprendre le cours de la rédaction,ou simplement faire part à l’occasion de sonpoint de vue : cette tribune est ouverte àtous.

Perhaps the contacts made during thislast exhibition are the harbingers of a futuresuccession. Two young mathematicians, onefrom the École Normale, the second as post-doc, expressed their interest in mathematicsand esthetics. Discovering the works ofKozlov, a student from the National Schoolof Decorative Arts is undertaking work withour Russian colleague.

Peut-être les rencontres faites au coursde cette dernière exposition sont-elles lessignes avant-coureurs d’une relève future.Deux jeunes mathématiciens, l’un de l’EcoleNormale, le second en postdoc ont fait partde leur intérêt et pour les mathématiquesbien sûr et pour l’esthétique. Découvrantles œuvres de Kozlov, une élève de l’EcoleNationale Supérieure des Arts décoratifsentreprend un travail avec notre collèguerusse.

Today, it is difficult to expect serious pro-gress in the country without the foundationsof modern mathematics becoming clear tothe broadest strata of society.

The « Mathematical Park » project is an in-ternational cultural, educational, informatio-nal and educational initiative proposed by agroup of specialists under the auspices of theEuropean Society for Mathematics and Art(ESMA). The project involves the creation ofan architectural and landscaped complex often small pavilion structures, each of whichwith its shape and internal content will re-present a specific mathematical theme : thefield of mathematics, its section or its direc-tion.The objective of the project is to visua-lize fundamental mathematical ideas througharchitecture, sculpture, decorative art andgardening, thus making them accessible tothe general blic. The internal content of thepavilions will be designed for interactive in-teraction with visitors, which will allow themto see and understand the main characteris-tics of the main sections of mathematics.

Aujourd’hui, il est difficile de s’attendreà un progrès sérieux du pays sans que lesfondements des mathématiques modernes nedeviennent clairs pour les couches les pluslarges de la société.

Le projet «Parc Mathématique » est une ini-tiative culturelle, éducative, informationnelleet éducative internationale proposée par ungroupe de spécialistes sous les auspices dela Société Européenne de Mathématiques etd’Art (ESMA). Le projet implique la créa-tion d’un complexe architectural et paysagerde dix petites structures de pavillons, dontchacune avec sa forme et son contenu internereprésentera un thème mathématique spéci-fique : le domaine des mathématiques, sa sec-tion ou sa direction. L’objectif du projet estde visualiser des idées mathématiques fon-damentales au moyen de l’architecture, dela sculpture, de l’art décoratif et du jardi-nage, les rendant ainsi accessibles au grandpublic. Le contenu interne des pavillons seraconçu pour une interaction interactive avecles visiteurs, ce qui leur permettra de voiret de comprendre les principales caractéris-tiques des principales sections de mathéma-tiques.

In general, my opi-nion was positive : our project attracted in-terest of the public and established connec-tions with the Academy of Art ».

3) I mentioned in the previous pages andin the introductory note to my speech, oneof my concerns that has long occupied mymind, read on this subject Homage to Gro-thendieck HGC : it is today of the race bet-ween Nature and human society. It has notyet been won. If we lose it, the efforts made tocreate and maintain ARPAM and ESMA willhave been in vain. Human society can onlymaintain itself at the cost of major trans-formations, no doubt in its physiology, andimmediately in its clothing. We have in thevery far past compensated for the deficiencieslinked to the natural form of our nudity bythe invention of clothing allowing us to resistthe climatic variations of these eras. We arevery likely to experience, in ten years withoutdoubt, summers where the temperature willhappily exceed 60°C. It is important to qui-ckly create a company versed in the manufac-ture of coveralls, kinds of spacesuits protec-ting us from the ambient heat and its lethaleffects. So can we think of continuing ESMAactivities which are part of the intellectualand cultural development which accompaniesin its depth the evolution of humanity.

3) J’ai fait état dans les pages précédentes etdans la note préliminaire à mon allocution,de l’une de mes préoccupations qui, depuislongtemps, occupe mon esprit, lire à ce su-jet « Hommage à Grothendieck HGC » : ils’agit aujourd’hui de la course entre la Na-ture et la société humaine. Elle n’est pas en-core gagnée. Si nous la perdons, les effortsaccomplis par la création et le maintien del’ARPAM, de l’ESMA auront été vains. Lasociété humaine ne pourra se maintenir qu’auprix de larges transformations sans doutedans sa physiologie, et de manière immé-diate dans son vêtement. Nous avons dans lepassé très lointain compensé les déficiencesliées à la forme naturelle de notre nuditépar l’invention de vêtements nous permet-tant de résister aux variations climatiques deces époques. Nous allons très probablementconnaître, d’ici une dizaine d’années sansdoute, des étés où la température dépasseraallègrement les 60°C. Il importe de créer rapi-dement une société versée dans la fabricationde combinaisons, de sortes de scaphandresnous protégeant de la chaleur ambiante etde ses effets mortels. Alors pourra-t-on son-ger à poursuivre les activités de l’ESMA quis’inscrivent dans le cadre du développementintellectuel et culturel qui accompagne danssa profondeur l’évolution de l’humanité.

Let me pay tribute here to a winner of theGeneral Drawing Competition, he once sentme several of these cards :

Permettez-moi de rendre ici hommage à unlauréat du Concours Général de Dessin, ilm’a autrefois adressé plusieurs de ces cartes :

His name is Jean-Claude Pecker. He becameprofessor of astrophysics at the Collège deFrance. I learned of his disappearance by rea-ding the newspaper Le Monde, this Tuesday,March 3. The newspaper does not mentionhis activities within the Association for Aidto Refugee Scientists, founded by Nobel Prizelaureate Alfred Kastler. Jean-Claude Peckerwas the first treasurer. He lost his son Daniellast year to a long illness. Daniel, a mathe-matician at Paris 6 University, had becomea specialist in knots.

Son nom est Jean-Claude Pecker. Il de-vint professeur d’astrophysique au Collège deFrance. J’ai appris sa disparition par la lec-ture du journal Le Monde, ce mardi 3 Mars.Le journal ne mentionne pas ses activités ausein de l’Association d’Aide aux ScientifiquesRéfugiés, fondée par le prix Nobel de phy-sique Alfred Kastler. Jean-Claude Pecker enfut le premier trésorier. Il a perdu l’an der-nier son fils, Daniel, des suites d’une longuemaladie. Daniel, mathématicien à l’Univer-sité Paris 6, était devenu un spécialiste desnœuds.�
