Freud • Ini:ally, tried to “eliminate” transference
• Later, transference became the primary focus of his work
©Advanced-Trainings.com/abmb11e/
Jung • Countertransference: The prac::oner’s transferred feelings and reac:ons influence therapeu:c outcomes, as well as the pa:ent’s.
©Advanced-Trainings.com/abmb11e/
Reich • The body’s physical tension reflects psychological and energe:c “blockage.”

Transference
• Func:on: • An unconscious a_empt to understand the present rela:onship in terms of past rela:onships, roles, or archetypes
• Always present, in every rela:onship • Mostly unconscious and irra:onal • Not necessarily a problem

Countertransference
• The prac::oner’s version of transference.
• Crucial part of the job: seeing our own “stuff.”
• Where we learn and grow.
©Advanced-Trainings.com/abmb11e/
The Five Hindrances
1. A_rac:on 2. Aversion 3. Restlessness 4. Doubt 5. Sloth and Torpor
©Advanced-Trainings.com/abmb11e/
Dealing with Countertransference
• Litmus test: “Can I drop it?” • If “no,” there is some work to be done: • Supervision, feedback, reflec:on, etc.
©Advanced-Trainings.com/abmb11e/
Projec:ve Iden:fica:on and Dreaming Up
• Classic defini:on: • Unconscious coopera:on with another’s transference.
• Is it all “theirs”? • "There is no immaculate percep:on." (Seymour Carter)
• And, there is some truth in every projec:on.

Transference and Needs
• Troublesome transference (and C.T.) is an a_empt to sa:sfy an unmet need in an ill-‐suited arena.
©Advanced-Trainings.com/abmb11e/
Prac::oners’ Needs • We all have basic human needs (M. Rosenburg).

Exercise: Ring of Needs • List 10 of your own needs. Be honest. • On new paper, draw a large circle, as wide as the whole page. • Fill it with several concentric rings, with last one in center:
• Needs from my clients • Needs from my prac:ce • Needs from my community, friends, family, partner, dog, etc. • Needs from myself • Center: your choice
• Place your needs on the target where they’re most likely to: • Be fulfilled sa:sfactorily, and • Be of benefit to others (including your clients).

Clients’ Needs
• All client needs are valid (though may not all belong in the client/prac::oner rela:onship).
• It may be difficult for clients to sort out which needs belongs where.
• By having clear boundaries, prac::oners can help clients iden:fy and meet their own needs in effec:ve ways.

Summary
• There is always transference, like there is always weather.
• Steady boundaries are usually the most effec:ve response.
• Our own a_rac:on, aversion, restlessness, laziness, and doubt is ours to deal with.
• Needs are valid; they are more likely to be fulfilled in the right place.

Homework (op:onal): Countertransference/Needs Exercise 1. Briefly, think of a recent client with whom you
noMced one of the 5 hindrances (AXracMon, Aversion, Restlessness, Doubt, Sloth) in yourself.
2. What “underwater” or unconscious needs of your own might you have been trying to fulfill?
3. Where on your “Ring of Needs” would you rather place the fulfillment of that need?
• In other words, where in your circles of support could you appropriately look for that need to be fulfilled?
4. OpMonally, share on course’s FaceBook page.
©Advanced-Trainings.com/abmb11e/
Homework (op:onal) 1. Briefly describe an area where boundaries can be
challenging to you as a pracMMoner. (I.e., where you can be either too diffuse or too rigid.)
2. Imagining that, describe specific body responses you might have at the moment you’re facing that challenge.
3. What could you do with your body instead, that would allow more of the needed style (more openness or more firmness)?
4. OpMonally, Share on course Facebook page.
